A BIG thank you to all the role models here.  You have helped me achieved something I didn't think I could do!

I only started running about a year and a half ago after finishing treatment and despite a number of set backs and new starts I ran in a couple of 4K events.  I then decided to complete in the Sydney 9K bridge run on Sept 21.  Training was progressing well and I had run 7K in training but then about a month out I got sick and had to stop training for 2 weeks.  I got back into training but not to my pre sickness level. My run plan was to try to complete 7K which was just before a grinding final hill which I would walk.

Race day was cool so I thought I had a good chance.  The run starts across the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and on the way I passed young people still walking the previous short 3.5K fun run with walking frames.  The crowd was clapping them and cheering them on and I felt inspired by people's drive to overcome adversity.  I was pumped.

I got to the uphill section which I thought was 7K to find it was only 6.5K. So, I ran on up the hill.  At 7K it flattened a little so I kept running.  I got to 8K and hey I was almost done, so I kept on running.

So, here I am running to the finish in 1 hr 2 mins!  Thanks to you!

Tammy_M43, that is so good! Good for you!!! That is so great that you dug deep to just bulldoze through that last couple of km! That's how we roll here, isn't it? That was great to read! I ran this morning (currently in metro Phoenix AZ) but now I want to run tomorrow afternoon!

Tammy, your picture made me choke up!  Your expression and the way you have your arms up just perfectly capture the feeling of triumph from pushing yourself and from laughing back at BC.

HockeyCat, rooting for you to get through these last two chemos with relative smoothness and then get back into hockey and running.

CeciliaVera, I agree with the advice to listen to your body and your surgeon. On the other hand, some surgeons are running-friendly and others are decidedly not. I have a colleague who is an absolutely gonzo runner (50 miles/week + 50 miles walking/week) and has run all the way through WEEKLY chemo--she did a 1:49 half after 9 infusions!  (Really, that is not a standard to which anyone else should compare themselves.) She found doctors who are marathoners and triathletes and they get her obsession. Recently they did tell her to take a few days off due to some heart issues from chemo, and she knew they weren't just being meanies.  As much as we want to think science is speaking with one voice, this is another way in which it isn't.  I would ask the surgeon but also give some walking a try, and then maybe some gentle jogging, very short distances, when you feel ready.  Since you didn't have reconstruction, there's less of a jiggle worry.  Good luck and it would be great if you would let us know what you hear and do, for the benefit of us and future readers.

Thank you RunFree16. I'm still sad about not being able to run Nike Women's Half today, but there will be another races for me. I walked a half hour yesterday. It was hard with bone pains but I'll keep walking, and soon running (hopefully)

Tammy, thank you for sharing your picture. You are my inspiration.

Hi. I would like to join in here.

I am a new runner. Just started running this summer using the Couch to 5k app. I am a slower runner. I average about 13.5 min miles but I am up to running 4.5 miles.  I run 3-4 times a week.

I am always interested in tips to stay motivated and uninjured.

Hi Ginger!  How great that you've started running and gotten yourself all the way up to 4.5 miles.  Motivation is a big challenge for me too.  I really need some running buddies but don't quite have the right resources in that department, in my very small town.  Signing up for races is a good motivator though.  Also sometimes I play little games with myself like, In 12 more runs, I can buy a new tech shirt.  For a while, I was in a Facebook group that was a great motivator.  It was started by Coach Jenny Hadfield (do you know the books Running for Mortals and Marathoning for Mortals? I love them).  It was originally a Holiday Challenge, post your workouts from Thanksgiving to New Year's last year.  Then a lot of people were finding it so helpful that they stayed with it. It just took too much time to keep up with and just after New Year's I stepped out of it, not without some sadness.

Just curious, what made you decide to do the BRCA test?  I didn't do it and my cancer profile is about like yours.

    Welcome Ginger48!

Wow, runfree16, you went 12 runs between tech-shirt purchases? My husband used to say every time I went out for a run, it cost me $100 at Lululemon! I guess I just discovered that runners use the things they use because they work, and it took a while to accumulate the gear for the different temperatures and so on. I hardly spend anything now (new shoes last week, though - super lightweight, mint colour Adidas Adios) but treating myself with equipment was a great motivator.

Hockeycat, hope your pain tapers off and you can get out for some runs soon.

RunFree16- I was BRCA tested because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer just 3 weeks before me. I had never even heard of BRCA before that. They wanted to test my mom but the lab where she lives had a delay so my dr ordered the test on me. I had already had a lumpectomy and was supposed to do radiation. When I tested positive, my treatment plan changed to mastectomy. It turned out to be a good thing as they found precancerous tissue in my other breast. The strange thing is that my mom's test came back negative. It is from my dad's side. He died of prostate cancer in 2009. We have since learned that his side is riddled with breast cancer but it was kept very hush hush.

Tammy- I started the couch to 5k app at the beginning of the summer when I was training for a sprint triathlon and wanted to be able to run at least part of the 5k segment.  My goal was to be able to run the whole 5k by November at a race in honor of a coworker's baby who lost her battle to cancer at the age of 6 months. I have always walked at it but this year I wanted to run it.

I completed the triathlon in August (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike) and was able to run the whole 5k segment. Then I  ran a 5k race in Sept  and 2 5k races in October.

Jamie's Run is on November 2nd. I may officially be addicted...

It's been quite some time since I've been on the thread, but you're all as lovely and inspirational as always!

I ran the Lake Placid half in early June and beat my time by 1 min.  I was thrilled, esp. since my training time had been greatly reduced because of my surgical biopsy.  I just ran the Mohawk-Hudson half two weekends ago, and a 10k last Sat.  I don't have anything else scheduled but am seriously thinking about doing a full marathon next fall (my first).

YAY!  Did my marathon on Sunday.  So glad it's done. Never again (I don't think) . . .

ChristyJ, go for it!  My last marathon was 18 years ago, Boston back in the 1990's!!!  Saw my youngest son do it this past April and it sparked me again. He graciously agreed to do Baystate with me.  It sure wasn't easy, but the payoff is so worth it.  My goal was to finish. My 2nd goal was to break 5 hrs, but I didn't quite make it: 5:13.

I do like the half-marathon distance much better, don't we all?  I will stick to that.  I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get a sub 2:00 for a half - the one I did last spring was 2:06 which ain't too shabby for a 61 year old!!

Stick with it, kids, it's the fountain of youth!

LuLu - wooooooohooooooo!!! Nope, not shabby at all.  Way to go!!

Congrats too Christy.  If you want to do a full, I say go for it.  You've got plenty of time to train and gear up for it.

LuvLuLu, congrats on finishing a marathon! Well done!

Goldlining, thank you! I walked every day since my last chemo on Wednesday. Today I felt well enough to jog for 2 miles, that makes me so happy! One more chemo to go in 2 weeks then I'll start radiation a few weeks after. I'm hoping I can run through radiation and be ready for 5k in December, and the Tinker Bell in May next year!

Hockeycat.. heads up for Tink 2015.. its already sold out  --Tink May 5-8th 2016 will be on sale Aug 11th 2015 :( they tend to sell out 9 months in advance. stalk the RunDisney fb page and Happiest Runners on Earth fb page. they will have the relevant run disney updates. BUT.. charities should still have spots open for 2015. Such as,  American Foundation for Suicide Prevention .. they have the lowest amount of funds to raise . I ran for them for Tink and found it surprisingly easy to get the funds. You will LOVE the disney runs :)

Hello everyone. Haven't posted in a long time ... still running :-) Firstcall and I were in the same chemo group on BCO and he started the running thread back then.

    Question. Ganglion cyst?

Does anyone have any experience with this? I had a lump pop up during my run this evening. It wasn't there when I put my shoes on & after my run, voila! It was there when I took my shoe off. No pain - just a round lump. Not squishy. More pronounced when my foot is flexed.

It's on my left foot just about where the shin bone meets the ankle. I googled and found similar lumps on podiatry websites and descriptions on Mayo Clinic. So right now this is purely speculation on my part.

    Anyone ?

HockeyCat - wow, that's fantastic. And one more chemo to go - woooo!!!!!  What's your 5K - I'll add it to the list.

Welcome back dltnhm.  Only know of ganglion cysts b/c a friend had one on her wrist.  Wish that were more helpful.  A podiatrist could confirm and treat it I would think (I think the "old school" method was to smash it with a large, heavy book, but I don't recommend that!)

    Happy running all.
