Hi, I was dx'd on in May 2014 and had dm ... uh ... last week. That is to say, Oct 2014. My mind is sometimes a blob, sometimes a whirlwind. And I used to be able to think straight.

Why they dope me up in the hospital and then give me important instructions and explanations is beyond me. I should carry some kind of CIA recording device.

They had me stay an extra night so they could give me a transfusion in my left hand. I don't know why; something about Potassium.

During that night they came in with another treatment - a huge 3" needle into my right hand - something to do with Magnesium. They taped that there but it didn't stay as long as the transfusion. I was totally doped up. It was very painful but immediately I noticed warmth in my feet, which have been icy for a couple of years. Since then it seems to me that my body temperature has evened out, which is a huge difference.

Part of my post-op meds at home is a bottle of Magnesium, 30ml twice daily for 3 days.

Can anybody tell me anything about Magnesium and/or Potassium and what's going on and why?

Thank you!

K (potassium), Mg (magnesium)and Zn (zinc)  that are minerals that vitally important at the right levels, and in correct ratios, for physical and mental health.   Too low or too bigh can cause serious health and mental issues.  For me, I have had to take mega doses of K daily to keep it up in the 'normal' area since 1/2 way through 12 Taxol TXs.  For some unknown reason, I dont retain K so have to take it in large doses - much larger than should be taken without it being recommended by 'your' Dr but it's what I need.  Even with all I take, I have to occasionally take some more but thankfully my body 'tells' me before the K drops too low so I can immediately take care of it.

For me, I've never had any issues with Mg and/or Zn levels as are always in the 'normal' range.  My only experiences with low Mg and/or Zn has been with horses.  Low Mg/Zn can present as nervousness, hyper-activity, depression or occasionally aggression.

There are many minerals (and vitamins) that are very necessary for the body to function as it should.  Unfortunately, when one/some 'get out of kilter', it can cause so many issues.  Often, until an issue presents,  they are all not always tested for in usual blood work.

If it were me, I'd be questioning the Dr about suspected causes and follow up testing and TX.  You might also want to ask about your Vit D level as it is often low in women and also has many effects on overall health.  Vit B complex is also a good one to check in it's variuos forms.  Depending on what meds you take, your activity level, diet, season, etc., levels of many minerals and vitamins can be effected which, inturn, effects QOL (Quality Of Life).

    Just my thoughts!
