I'm glad to find this topic. Yesterday I was able to run for the first time after my surgery! Only 2 miles but it felt so good. I was going to run Nike Women's Half Marathon in San Francisco in October. Ironically I got the acceptance email (this race is lottery only) from Nike on the same day I was diagnosed with BC. I was still hoping to run/walk this race. But a few weeks ago I found that I need chemo. Though my onc encourages me to continue exercising, but said no to half marathon during chemo. I'm so bummed...

HockeyCat, welcome! But the advice you received is sad. To the best of my recollection, our 2013 running thread moderator, firstcall, ran through his chemo. As a physician, he had an inside track on straight talk, perhaps. I did not have chemo, but I can imagine how disappointed I would be to be directed not to even walk it, especially if I felt I could, and needed to do it! Suggest you go peruse last year's thread for some comfort--or tales from experience, at least.
I'm all prepared for the trip to Disneyland, packing-wise, except the stupid running glasses have not come in from the lab yet. They were supposed to be in the end of LAST week, and I was counting on that to have time to re-make them if I couldn't tolerate the progressive multifocal in the curved frames. I had that happen with sunglasses before, and had to remake them as single vision. My regular glasses are so large that they're heavy and I was *really* looking forward to having these light running glasses. There's one last chance they will come in tomorrow, but I take off at dawn Friday.
I've been carb loading like crazy anticipating the two runs back to back, even though I did the same runs at WDW in January and it was not a problem. I guess I am just hoping to stack the deck for time improvement. Loving the race shirts especially the Dumbo shirt.
panthrah, you can think of me when you pass the interpreter at the starting line. It seems DL always has terps (at the expo too) and WDW never does. I was in a meeting with the people who know these things, and they said he was there because someone asked. So now I must ask for one in Florida!

goldlining, thank you for the warm welcome. Good luck on the Disneyland Half! That was my first half marathon several years ago, and I ran two more time. Love that race, it was a great & fun race! Since I won't be able to run Nike, I signed up for Tinker Bell Half next year. After chemo, I still have to do radiation for 6 weeks. But I think I can run by next May. I wanted to have something to look forward to, and a goal to keep me motivated to run.

Panthrah - you asked earlier this week if it was too early to pack. I know I'm a little late to the conversation but my first thought was that "You are leaving in less than a week and haven't started packing yet!". I'm a bit of a planner and I usually start packing for important trips about two weeks ahead. Let's not forget about the lists that I make. Good luck at Disney this weekend.
Goldlining and Donnabelle - good luck to you too this weekend. Goldlining, I saw the shirts on Facebook, I agree they are pretty nice.
NatsFan - reading about your group workouts makes me want to find a training group again, they really sound fun.
HockeyCat - welcome! Did your oncologist give you a reason for not doing a half marathon? Is it just because he doesn't expect you have the energy for it or some other reason? I ran through part of my chemo and I ran by feel and listened to my body. I ended up stopping about half way through since I kept getting colds (back to back to back for about 6-8 weeks) and just could not breathe, not because I was too tired. Had I not gotten those colds I would have kept running. I think I could have run/walked a half during chemo depending on when it would have been in my chemo cycle. Running through radiation is very doable. If you look at the start of this thread you will see some posts about me running through radiation.
My 16k last weekend was interesting. I walked about half of it because it was so hot. So I've acknowledged that my race next month will be what it will be, I will get it done but not sure how pretty it's going to be! At least the weather has cooled down a bit, should be a good run today!

HockeyCat, what kind of chemo will you be getting? That may make a difference in what you'll feel up to doing. My MO encouraged exercise during chemo, though I wasn't running back then. That said, she never told me there was anything I couldn't do, but to listen to my body and stay as active as possible. I exercised more through my first batch of chemo, which I tolerated really well, but less through my second batch, which made me more tired.

Hockey - I did the DC Nike Half last year and I love my Tiffany necklace - I wear it on days when I'm feeling blah and need a boost. If you're an experienced runner you may be able to complete the half, at least with a run/walk. But remember, everyone is different. I was extremely active before dx, but I'm one of those that chemo really knocked for a loop. There were days when I'd get home from work and collapse on the couch, and it would be all I could do for the rest of the evening to walk from my couch to the bedroom to go to bed. I did 6*TAC and I worked full time through chemo, so with all that I just had no energy left for exercise. Not everyone can run or do hard exercise through chemo - there's no shame if you can't do it - chemo just hits some people harder than others.
Talk with your onc again - he may not understand that you're an experienced runner, and that you're willing to walk/run it. My onc placed no exercise restrictions on me whatsoever as long as I promised to listen to my body and stop when I needed to. If I were you, I'd keep the plans to attempt the Nike Half for now and see how you react to chemo. You may feel up to attempting it, or you may have no choice but to drop out. If that happens, I'd definitely contact the Nike race people and explain why you need to drop out - perhaps they could work out something where you'd have a guaranteed slot in next year's race and not worry about winning the entry lottery again.

hi everyone
I'm an active runner and it didn't even occur to me that I couldn't run during chemo. Since I'm cold capping, I figured that I would just wet my head prior to running. I'm doing taxol herceptin weekly. Is running a complete no or it's just more likely that you won't be able to do it? Thanks and good luck to all.

My running glasses came in in the nick of time. Mr goldlining has been calling them daily, no joy, but finally they called 20 minutes before the shop closed and I live 25 to 30 minutes away, but managed to get there in time! They're really nice - the progressive multifocal actually works, despite the curvature of the frame. I think Oakley actually does it all with complex computer calculations in their lab. The weight difference compared with my regular glasses is a lot. Looking forward to wearing them this weekend! Counting down to bedtime and predawn trip to the airport. Next stop, runDisney Expo!

I just learned that the organizers for the Glow Run in Vegas cancelled the event this year. This is the one the September 2013 Chemo Group was doing as part of our meet up in Vegas to celebrate being done with treatment. We are all really disappointed. No explanation of why they cancelled it. We are still getting together, we just won't be doing the run. Oh well. Maybe next year.
Hi, DaniellaD! I wish you the best of luck as you start chemo. I found Taxol to be very tolerable. I had a little bit of neuropathy during treatment, but otherwise didn't have any major problems. I hope you find it easy too, and if you do, I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to continue running. I did not have Herceptin, so I don't know how people do on that.

Just finished the cold bath after the 10K. Got back to hotel sort of disappointed with the time, until I realized I had done the math wrong and was actually a minute faster than my previous best 10K time two weeks ago (the 10K split in the 15K). So I'm pretty pleased so far. Now for the delicate balance of protein for recovery and carbs for tomorrow!
I should edit to describe the course - first couple of miles out through the adjacent area, around the convention centre, but the rest was in the parks and backstage. Lots of Cast Members to applaud and very smoothly run. Only grievance was with fellow runners walking two or three across and passing other groups that were two or three across, and walking. How did they get start corrals in front of me, is what I would like to know. (I passed a hobbling, arthritic lady at mile 5.5. Like what the hell? But the race booklet has etiquette guidance that some people clearly need to read. On looking at my stats, though, I ran an efficient path, not much over 10K, so the congestion really just made me cranky; didn't cost me anything.
Gorgeous temperatures here. Sorry people back east are having rain etc.

Oncearunner, my onc said running and playing hockey when I feel well is fine, but running a half would be too taxing to my body. Also she brought up a concern of getting sick. I'll listen to my body and see if I can keep running and playing.
BetterDay, I'm getting Taxotere & Cytoxan every 3 weeks fo 4-6 times. My onc said I should be feeling well enough on the second and third week of the cycle to exercise. I'm starting chemo this Wednesday...
NatsFan, I contacted Nike to explain my situation. They said they cannot transfer my entry to the next year as they have the strict no refund no transfer policy to be fair for all the runners... But also told me to contact them if I can run next year. They may give me a slot, I hope!

this is an unusual post. I had my preop thurs.. got mcds happy meal for breakfast/lunch..went up to disney for packet pick up.. got jamba juice ..went into disneyland.. shopped.. went bk to room to nap.. woke up and headed back to california adventure for pasta.. then.... i noticed my tongue felt funny.. went to restroom its totally swollen and im slurring. off to first aid. got benadryl .. chatted about racing.. swelling went down..ate went to bed. Lined up in the morning for my 5k.. found a newbie ..adopted her.. we did the 5k took a pick and went on our way. went to mcds for breakfast..napped..went to park ate my fav salad for lunch.. ping ponged both parks.. sat and ate blueberry crisp things that came in after race bag (they have then at trader joes, they are yummy) on the last bite.. my lip started swelling.. now at disney first aid, handed me more benadryl .. noticed it wasnt getting worse..saved the meds back to room to nap.. woke up....lip triple in size, i almost have no voice, and i have knots all over my forehead. Disney people had given me a list of local ers, urgent cares.. called hubby.. took off to urgent care.. shot on benadryl, shot of steroids, and prednisone. even by the time i was checking out i sounded better and my lip didnt feel as tight. NO idea what caused this.. the joke is im allergic to mickey mouse :P i had no tinging, itching, hives. BUT heres the kicker.. I have my lx scheduled for tues ... with a random allergic reaction im worried the will push this off. The race was great the medal is way adorable they played hawaiian music thru the area (being a Lilo and Stitch race) the outfits were awesome, the little kids were adorable. but maybe next disney trip (prolly soon) ill just bring the whole box of benadryl with me
My next race is next sun .. an Aloha 5k Race hehe so ill wear the same thing :P

so yeah I kind of looked like A. permanent duck face , B. husband said Homer Simpson C. Too much collagen.and being a holiday weekend im sure my crew wont be there. tues morning Ill let them know of course. check in is 8am.. surgery isnt till 1145.
Dr Google ( and peoples stories ) have informed me that yes this can be stressed induced. which as odd as it sounds.. makes me feel better

I have not had a melt down over this yet and I do feel like Im reaching a tipping point. something lame will push me over the edge.. like a sappy commercial hehe. I thought the 5k would help .. it didnt.. maybe I need to go back to roller derby to get my stress out (kind of took the summer off) stress i can manage.. unknown allergy is hard to manage. now back to your regularly scheduled race planning

Weekend race report here.... I live in a town that has an incredible running community and every year there is an all women's race to support the breast care program at one of our health systems. It's the facility where I received my treatment. 3500 runners and walkers from age 7 to 86. I always eat mcds- its my go to quick food. i thought maybe blueberrys , but then the other common thread was apples. BUT i ate apples last night and no issues *shrug*

Oh panthrah! Sorry to read that! I had allergic reaction to the cupcake I carb loaded on yesterday at the Jolly Holiday Bakery -- it was very good, but my nose began to run, and considered taking a Benadryl but decided to try to ride it out. When I woke up in the middle of the night to get ready for the Half, my digestive system was on red alert. Had to deal with it and did not get to the start as early as I had hoped, but when the distress tapered off, I took three Imodiums and was able to run without ill effect. Just drank more water and Gatorade to counteract the dehydrating effect. I used to be able to eat baked goods with egg in them, just not actual eggs, quiche etc. but lately pancakes and waffles have triggered it, and now, ta-da, a delicious cupcake with hidden raspberries and mousse under the massive mound of icing.
I've been told apples sometimes provoke allergy because of pesticides in the peel. However, I had apple slices at McD on Harbor yesterday and there were no peels. Hardly any damned apples either. I complained to McD corporate. In Canada, we have twice as much apples per serving as they gave me. I wondered about those almond/blueberry things and the almond roca in the snack box. The box is gluten free, but I feel for the people with nut issues.
After my first Half, the Princess in 2010, I woke up in the middle of the night to find the pillow covered in drool and half my face tingling. I had developed Bell's Palsy. That is viral but without stress, you can fight off that kind of virus. So I do give some credibility to the stress factor. Even if the emotional stress is zero (which it wasn't for me then, as I had the mammogram callback come in just before the trip), endurance running is a hard thing to do, physically. I was already on Valtrex, so the symptoms were not as bad as they could have been, and I did a short course of pred along with extra Valtrex and only my dermatologist and I notice that the affected side is droopier when I am tired. The neurologist in the facial clinic was all "just smile and nobody will notice". You have to tell the anaesthesiologist and surgeon about the mysterious allergic reaction and the medication (especially the steroids), but if it goes down by then, they may not be too worried as long as they know. Steroids do something related to healing, don't they? Like delay wound healing? May not be a deal breaker, but they might need to factor it in.
So, my race report. Thanks to the digestive drama, I arrived later than intended, and did that Candy Crush gambit of weaving through the crowd to get myself to the front of H corral. Again watched people file into the G corral with such high BMI or obvious arthritis in their lower extremities that I wonder who I have to pay off to get a better corral. I passed a bunch of those people before mile 2, you know? Don't make me waste energy having to weave around slow moving people. That is the whole point of corrals! Nothing wrong with walking a Half. Just start behind the people who are running! Alongside me at the front of H was the pacer holding a 2:45 balloon. Not my target time. I need the peer pressure to perform. In a free-corral system, I like to start with the 2:15 pacer and do a good first half and then an adequate second half. I am not good enough to have a negative split, and if I ran a slow first half, it would be game over.
I was kind of sore from yesterday, in the hip extensors, so it was a little challenging but oddly beneficial. Later in the race when my pace was tapering off, I told myself that rather than walking with a long stride, I should do slow, short running steps, spreading the work around to ankles and knees and not inflaming the hips. My time was 11 minutes faster than my Half in January! I am now officially, finally, faster than I was pre-BC. That 2010 Princess Half was 2:43, but I killed my IT band doing that time. From there, I was being hacked and whittled on a regular basis through the past five years, and all of my times were slower, as slow as 3:06. Today, I finished in 2:37. So topping a personal best in yesterday's 10K is another personal best in the Half. (Funny - my Garmin has a recovery check feature. Usually, at 1km, it buzzes and says "Recovery: Good". The Garmin boards have many comments like "why even have it if it always says "Good". Today, I got to 1km, and it buzzes and says "Recovery: Fair". Sort of, "you did not wait the suggested number of hours after that last run". However, on completing the half, it says I can run again in 63 hours, less than 3 days. I don't think I will, though!
Hustling to the front of my corral and then catching up to the G runners was a good move. Most of the people around me throughout the race were running, not walking. That motivated me to keep up the running stride with just brief walking stints.
There was a lot of fun on the course, including great costumes, and some wacky runners, and fun signs. At just at the right time, there was a girl on the sidelines holding up "you feel like crap but you look amazing". Much appreciated! Team MousePlanet also had made a sign for me with a fingerspelled message. Seeing "my" sign at the halfway point was a real shot in the arm. I had started to walk a bit more leading up to that, but just like it always does, it makes me run more for the next couple of miles.
I ate a whole Clif Shot Blox pack and a couple of red vines from those wonderful people along the side. That really helped - I was pleased with how I timed the snacking because I never felt "wiped", just that I was working hard. After finishing the whole snack box (minus the soy-filled Clif bar) before the medal engraver was done, I came back to the hotel to eat some granola bars and chocolate milk while I soaked in the cold tub. Now, I need to fuel. It was cloudy during the run which kept us comfortable but right now it is the bluest sky you ever saw - just a gorgeous day.

Ill only have one pill left of the pred the day of surgery . I will most def let everyone know. swelling is gone and things are back to normal-ish . i kept thinking i was getting bit by something this week.. few red bumps then nothing.. well.. they are hives *face palm* Im not doing to well with this stress thing right now. so im deep cleaning the house hehe I am very happy you had a successful race. I love disney races.. I really do.. I high five every one.. the signs make me cry, the red hat ladies make me cry, i yell good morning to all staff and cops. im full smile and giggles the whole race and limp and glow for the rest of the day , then carry the medal with me for weeks

I had hives pre DIEP too. I will never know if I am allergic to contrast media (from the CT scan) or if it was just stress. Be good to yourself this week!

Great race report goldlining and panthrah. Sorry you both seemed to have a reaction to something during your trip. Hopefully the reactions are clearing nicely.
Panthrah - I hope your unknown reaction does not cause any surgery delays, wishing you the best for this week.
goldlining - I too have the same pet peeve with corals and people who don't line up based on their pace. I've started favouring smaller races to avoid that issue but I do make exceptions. I realize I may have made similar faux pas when I started running and races, but as you said a lot of these things are explained in the race guides.
I managed to get in 18k yesterday and it was brutal. It was just so humid and not, good thing it was overcast with some wind. I'm still having that weird heart rate thing and it took me forever to catch my breath after my run yesterday. I'm things are going to get better as I up my training and end my Herceptin treatments. At least I got it done and I'm on pace to not be picked up by the Disney bus with a bit of time to spare!
