Do you avoid parabens, etc.?

I've used Tom's deodorant since my diagnosis in order to avoid aluminum. It works for me, so why not.

I've noticed that so many beauty products contain parabens, and to my knowledge they are estrogenic. I'm aware of the (at your own risk, not definitive) paraben studies thus far and that more studies need to be done, but I check all ingredient lists to avoid parabens as well. The fact they were found in breast tissue is alarming.

I'm asking this question here because I thought if I asked it on a holistic forum, they'd say definitely no to any chemical like parabens.

I almost bought a beautiful Lorac eyeshadow palette the other day and was surprised it contained parabens. Some higher end products do contain them, some lower end products don't. I always have to check.

If you avoided parabens elsewhere, would you avoid an eyeshadow palette, or am I being overly cautious?

I avoid parabens and scents where ever possible, especially lavender.  No one can tell you for sure what is risk or not, there just isn't enough study.  But my feeling is, I will do what I can within my power, and this an easy one. There are so many non-paraben options out there, just find another brand.

i do pay attention to stuff like this - environmental working group has a great series of pages on a wide variety of products....  skin deep -- it's called.  you can look up a bunch of ingredients for suspected endocrine disruption or carcinogenicity.... or what have you.

we definitely stay away from parabens... and many other similar types of chemicals.

Yes I stay away from parabens and from sun tan lotions too as they have loads of toxic stuff in them..........I changed all my make up, skin care, shower gels, shampoos, and especially lipsticks as we lick those all the time without knowing so ingest a lot of them!

Yes, I've made the switch too. Why take a chance?  In addition to the EWG, the Breast Cancer Fund has ways to reduce your risk:

    No, not really....

But after a year and a half on Arimidex, then Femara, I have stopped the AIs completely (with my MO's blessing) and will now have to rethink my role in keeping  recurrence at bay.

My diet is pretty healthy, I've lost weight and started exercising again, so I do see changes in my future.

Just not sure how stringent I will be with every single product I use, especially if it's not on a regular basis.

I really try to stay away from parabens

Where do u find lipstick without it?

    And what's the brand?

    I changed everything but that.

Absolutely -- parabens and just about every other chemical ingredient.  There are plenty of wonderful, natural options out there, and the concern is the amount of cumulative exposure we get from applying multiple products per day.

For lipstick and foundation, I use Bobbi Brown.  It may not be 100% natural, but it's botannically based and paraben free.

Here's a list I just pulled up that might be helpful if you're searching for options:  http://bcaction.org/our-take-on-breast-cancer/environment/safe-cosmetics/paraben-free-cosmetics/  And there are several natural cosmetics bloggers -- including a makeup artist whose name escapes me at the moment, but I'll try to think of and add  -- who also have lists with recommendations.       Deanna

Re: lipsticks, not sure how much color you like but I've switch to Alba Botanica Lip Tint. It also has some mineral based sunscreen protection (SPF 8? 15?) which is great (a friend's dad in LA got skin cancer on his lips).  Since there's a color, I can see when my sun protection has worn off. It was less than $5 at the health food store and I think it came in 4 colors? (I bought two different shades).

since I stopped wearin make up I do wear a dark color lipstick

I only put it on once a day but I would like to get the natural ones

Lip tint would never show up on my skin

    I need the real thing

I used to wear the mood lipstick, that stayed on all day

Gotta check out Bobbi Brown products

    Thanks

Firecracker, be careful about the darker lipstick colors.  Some tend to have the most amount of lead in them, which some people feel is worrisome -- although probably not a specific bc risk:

    http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/08/16/is-there-danger-lurking-in-your-lipstick/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

By the way, Bobbi Brown lip colors don't last very well on me.  I find I need to re-apply frequently, but that could just be me.  I also use fairly neutral colors most of the time.

    thanks Deanna

I have thought about what u said and I have decided since I now live in the country I am not gonna wear even lipstick every day....if I go even to the store I put it on but now I'm ok without if

I have come to the point in my life where it doesn't matter

I wore makeup since I was about 13 yrs old,all different kinds and lots of it

I'm 73 now...as long as my hair is still on my head the rest doesn't matter

    Am I makin any sense?

Carol, a good quality lipstick or lip gloss will protect and moisturize your lips, and I personally feel like I need that touch of color to brighten my face and skin. But I know what you mean about getting along with less than we may have thought was necessary in the past.

I have stopped using most products - I use coconut oil for moisturizing.   Amazingly, when I had radiation they told me not to use deodorant, and when I didn't use it I discovered that I no longer have armpit odor!  Must be the menopause?  I would have kept using deodorant had I not been told that I couldn't use it for a while.....  no make up, no hair products, no hair dye, no nail polish.  but then I never did much of that stuff anyway.....

    I use coconut oil too

On my face and body,in my hair, even on my lips

But I have to use deodorant not under the arm where I had the nodes removed but the other one

Under the bad arm I use corn starchAnd if it hurts I use castor oil and put the corn starch on top of it

I don't miss all the fuss with all the makeup

Two new paraben-free makeup/skincare companies I've found. Yay!!

    1. It Cosmetics (sold only at Ulta and QVC for now)

    2. Tarte (sold at Ulta, Sephora, QVC, etc.)

I was introduced to It Cosmetics at Ulta a few months ago when they applied one of their fabulous liquid foundations called "Your Skin but Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50+" quickly with a brush; so easy! After 40+ years, it's miraculous this foundation covers my facial redness and makes my skin look dewy and flawless without being heavy (it can also be layered, but I need only apply one quick brushing & done! It has also improved my skin, as it has anti-aging beneficial ingredients. It does not sink into my pores or wrinkles, requirement for any foundation reaching "Holy Grail" status for me!. My college daughter bought it immediately, and we both say (for the first time!) it is our "Holy Grail" of foundations. I love my skin (hate foundation I can feel or that shows) and it feels so good and lasts! "Holy Grail" status from my college daughter is something I never thought I'd hear. I have other products of theirs, another favorite being their "Bye a Bye Pores HD Finishing Powder" which I use only in T-zone; it's like Bare Minerals or Nars but lighter by far. The owner used to be a TV anchor with rosacea (still has redness) and knows about the need for beautiful skin and no-show makeup.

I haven't used Tarte yet, but plan to if they carry a product I like and need. Anyone use Tarte and have a favorite there?

Kudos to these environmentally conscious companies! They care about more health dangers than just parabens!

P.S. I've been told by Olay that their Regenerist Eye Lifting Serum (really acts as an eye cream) has a new formulation with no parabens. The style of the bottle and packaging also changed. Old bottles did contain parabens. I love this new formulation because I've used it in the past with noticeable results. It's received a lot of beauty awards, so I'm glad it's apparently paraben free. The packaging, however, does not confirm this, so I'm relying on ingredient list check of the new formulation and Olay's customer service word. Skin Deep app does not reflect the new formulation or packaging.

I like Korres cheek butter blush and lip gloss. I tried the Tarte eyeliner gel but found it dried out too fast. I also like Josie Maran makeup - particularly the tinted moisturizer and under eye concealer stick and gel blush and also the mascara - her get one give one (GOGO) program gifts a mascara to a cancer patient at the City of Hope hospital in California when you purchase one. I also like Boscia skin products. All of this is available from Sephora.

    Hi SpecialK,

My daughter uses Boscia for cleansing, and we both use Korres Greek Yoghurt Face Cream. I use Korres Milk Protein cleanser for now. The Korres yoghurt face cream works fantastic for both of us, but next time I might try something with more anti-aging properties. Daughter brought home a sample of Korres' new Black Pine Eye Cream for me yesterday; how sweet of her.

I haven't tried any Jose Maran products yet, but now have an added incentive with their charitable program for cancer. I wasn't aware Korres had a makeup line. Thanks!

I only posted this question in this particular forum because I don't want to be taking hormonal therapy and then reversing it in a sense by taking in chemicals (like parabens) that mimic estrogen.

I do think there is a better place to post questions such as this, as they relate to our health and as we move on after our treatment.

Do you or a moderator here know of any such forum here better suited?

SpecialK -- Thanks for the link to the charitable (cancer) GOGO program!

Please see my post directly above, too, if you have time.

I think that this is a great topic!  Having said that it is just about impossible to avoid parabens....  I have to take a stool softener and there are 2 different kinds of parabens in there!

Aldo trying to find cosmetic and skin care companies in canada without parabens. Ugh!!
