LOL Tina!  He was just sleeping on them :)   I am slowly training hubby to keep his boots picked up, and training the puppy to leave them alone with the hubster forgets!

Chele - I love him!  I had a 1/2 purebred championship border collie and "big yellow dog that jumped the fence" cross when I was growing up.  I still miss her and she passed away when she was 19 and I was in my late 20s.  He'll be wonderful once he gets past the bratty baby stage!

Leah - happy belated Independence Day!

Glenna - sounds like a blast!

My hubby and I are going to an astrophotography class tomorrow afternoon/evening.  Hoping for clear skies.

Just popping in real quick to share that I snorkeled at Lady Elliot Island, the southern part of the The Great Barrier Reef today!  It was an amazing experience! Loving my time in Australia so far!

Thanks Mompsych!  He's so funny.  He literally zooms until he drops instantly asleep.

Wow Kiwi!  That's great she made it to 19!!!!

nbnotes I'm so jealous!  I keep threatening that I'm going to go to the airport and jump on the first plane leaving to anywhere with a beach.  I'd love to go to Australia and snorkel.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL !

Whether you are a mother to children of any age, fur babies or plants, here's to the nurturing side of women.

    Caryn

PS: Not to be a bummer (I know you'll understand) but as my students were wrapping Mother's Day gifts and making cards, I realized that this is the first time since I was in kindergarten, 50+ years ago, that I did not make/buy/send a Mother's Day card. I didn't  think it would be this hard, but it is.

Caryn, I complain about my mom but KNOW how lucky I am to still have her here.  Being able to pick up the phone anytime and hear her voice is a blessing.  So sorry for your loss and your sadness!  And for all others who have lost their moms!

Nancy - I had a blonde moment!  Now I remember that you're headed to NZ!  You'll have a blast. Hope the weather is good for you.  The area you're going to has the best weather in NZ.   Still likely chillier than Florida, but absolutely beautiful.  The only problem with the area is that once you go, you may not want to leave.

One word of warning  (somewhat tongue in cheek) - don't order things with a high mayonaise content.  The mayo here is quite sweet.  I had some friends from the US visit and they toured around the country.  We met up at the end of their trip and the first question was "What the hell did they do to the mayo here?"  :)

Hope you have a fantastic trip!  Want to hear all about it!!

Weddings, puppies & snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef!  I've found a good place to lift my spirits! I'm new to this conversation but not BCO.

My current fun is in learning new things...we recently moved to our Dream./Retirement home. I've taken up bird watching which is such fun I can't believe it. I've also been taking oil painting lessons. I really love it, it's like meditation for me. My mind and body are focused on one thing. One day maybe I'll share a painting. I'm also learning to crochet.

Can't wait to share more fun with y'all!

Confessions of a cruise addict... Yup, I just booked another one. Going to Alaska in June 2015. How's that for an optimist's view of stage IV?

    Caryn

PS: yes, I got trip insurance that covers pre-existing medical conditions. I am optimistic not foolish!

Oh Caryn! That's fantastic!  If I could do one cruise, it would be Alaska.  And no reason not to be optimistic!

You're so welcome nbnotes!   I hope you have an absolute blast.

My hubby and I are into astronomy (he more than me, but I like it too).  So we've signed up for two astrocamps this winter.  One at the end of July, which is just a weekend thing that we've done before, and it's fun and close to home.  The other one is on the South Island in the middle of nowhere.  We're staying at a boy scout camp in bunk beds in a shared room for 2 nights, but they are beaming in speakers from the US to give talks.  So, that part is ok, but...wait...there's more!  I am trying to figure it out, but we plan to do an overnight cruise in Doubtful Sound.  Then we'll go to Dunedin, where my husband went to high school (and helped build the observatory) and catch up with friends, then drive up the coast of the South Island and take the ferry back home to Wellington.  Probably a week-long trip.  Hoping to fit in a whale watching cruise in Kaikora as well.

I also am doing a fair amount of business travel to Christchurch.  There's a nature reserve/park there and they have 6 month old cheetahs that you can have an encounter with, so that's also on the list.  Just need a bit more annual leave!

I'd love to take an Alaskan cruise, enjoy!  I've been doing a little reading with my spare time.  Finished Into the Wild this past week.  It taps into that side of some of us that need that feeling of freedom from all the things and people that weigh us down, as well as the need to take risks and have an adventure.

Then, I had the tv on, half watching, mostly not, but a commercial for a new movie came on.  The Fault in our Stars.  I decided to grab the Kindle version on Amazon....24 hours later, I'm done reading it and I highly recommend.  A thoughtful, intelligent book that questions why we are here.  Both main characters have cancer, and the author seems to get it.  Some places made me laugh how spot on and sometimes sarcastic they were.  Others actually made me cry.

Any recommendations for my next read?  I may go back to a few of the classics that I haven't read in many many years.....

I don't get to travel much. Stay pretty close to home.DD and I had an appointment with a florist yesterday, for the wedding flowers. On our way there we passed by Madison Square and found a food festival going on. All sorts of interesting stuff. Didn't eat anything (appetite isn't what it used to be) so I took a couple of pics.

    image

There was a booth with Chinese food, but what caught my eye were the "chorus line" of golden kitchen gods waving

    image

There was also brick oven pizza which one vendor brought along a brick oven.

Romansma - thanks for the recommendation!  I'll definitely get it for the Kindle.  I'd give you recommendations, but by and large, I read absolute crap these days, and deliberately so.  I was raised by librarians and had read most of the classics by the time I was 12.  And I re-read them.  And love Greek mythology.  However, between the stress of the job and cancer, I want pure escapism these days. I commute on the train an hour each way to work and read trashy murder mysteries.  Total escape.  But I do get into the mood for something which requires a bit of thought from time to time, and your recommendation sounds like it fits the bill.
NYC - fantastic pics!  Thanks for sharing - made me feel like I was there.

Last week, my husband, son and I flew to Atlanta, Georgia for my niece's wedding.  We spent three days there, enjoying lots of extended family activities and squeezing in some sight-seeing along the way.  We toured CNN studios, the Coca Cola Museum and visited the Jimmy Carter Library & Museum, which we might have loved the best.  Atlanta, tho such a large city, has such beautiful southern grace & charm.

Last summer, my sisters, a family friend and I went to Atlanta to help my niece pick out her gown...she tried on 10 gowns, and when that 10th one went on, all of us said, "That's it."  It was a magical experience, and the wedding was such a special, memorable occasion. Here's a photo of us gals at the reception.  I am on the far left in polka dots.  My three sisters are on the right, with the family friend standing next to me.

it's nice to talk about fun things, interest in events makes us feel that we are still young at heart. My DD and I took off for a little "girl time" last week, and being with her makes me forget that I have scans, blood work, onc visit next week. She helps me stay "balanced" and has been my rock through this.  We are fun and silly, and have Dairy Queen Peanutbutter Parfait for lunch if we want.

I am leaving on vacation on wed to San Diego.  I am excited we are going to have so much fun and I am not thinking of cancer.  I will act normal like nothing is wrong for a whole week.  We have so much plans like legoland, San Diego zoo, sea world and hopefully some whale watching.  I really need this just to get away from normal day problems.  It seems like cancer is everywhere I go so this is a nice break.
