Visiting in Cincinnati this weekend for a Ladies Weekend and had the most wonderful run this morning! Beautiful scenery with the trees blooming and perfect, sunny day. It was one of those runs that gives you that feeling of such well-being afterwards.
Warrior, I know how you feel and you CAN work your way back.
Fairy, it's hard to get back to running and then have to give it up again.
I have had to do this twice, after chemo then after a surgery, and now am scheduling another reconstruction surgery where I will have to take 6 weeks off
-
So glad I found this thread! I'm registered for the Susan koman 5 k in Philadelphia on Mother's Day , my daughter will be running with me. Is any one else registering? I agree with maria11 running keeps me grounded. Taking almost a year off due to treatments and surgery was tough. My next goal is 1/2 marathon I'm Disney this November.
-
Welcome jeepster1! Are you registered for the November runDisney event? Which one/date? lovestorun will pin you down on the calendar to keep you honest
I could not believe how fast the Avengers run sold out. Two hours! Now I am stalking the registration for the Marathon weekend, opens to passholders this Wednesday, and probably the general public the following week. (Following runDisney on Twitter or FB will track it.) This time, I will just sign up for the Half. Seems weird to have four future races registered, but with runDisney, you can't take time to decide. It's good for my motivation to have to commit!
Thanks everyone for your updates so I can run vicariously while I am off! I am just a couple of weeks away from running again. I've booked a week in Orlando in early May and looking forward to some runs there. I am using my Garmin vivófit wristband to track my steps in the mean time, trying to at least walk as much as I can, with the energy (and workload) that I have. It's kind of cool, tracking not just walking but also how restful my sleep was. Very cool. Love the gadgets!
Have some good runs on Sunday, everyone!
-
Absolutely beautiful weather today for my first 5k run with obstacles. The obstacles were challenging but tons of fun. Everyone was cheering each other on and it was a great group of people.. Unfortunately it didn't feel like a run event as the obstacles broke up the runs but it was really fun. Will look for a regular 5k to run and plan to do the fitathon again next year!
Tomorrow will likely be a leisurely walk to ward off any stiffness. Have a great Sunday everyone.......
-
OMG, just checked the wine and dine 1/2 marathon for November is sold out already😢. Just finished last procedure on Friday two weeks off from running, then game on!
-
jeepster, they're all selling out same-day now, but you can sometimes find places through running clubs and charities that have bought blocks. And the January weekend goes on sale soon!

Ran my 12 mile training run yesterday. Thankfully I found a port-a-let at grammar school at mile 9. I wouldn't have been able to run anymore without an accident (I drink a lot of water while taking Tamoxifen and still feel thirsty even when I am not running). My legs felt heavy after the stop, but I kept reminding myself that the farthest I had run since my treatment was 10 miles. That kept me going through the last few miles. I was able to hover just above or just below my 11 minute mile pace for all 12 miles, so that made me very happy. Tough night of sleep though. I find that happens after a tough run now.
lovestorun - I will be running the Ion Bank half marathon in Cheshire, CT on 4/27

StillRunningNLM, Re: the possible "accident", I saw a funny shirt from One More Mile: "What happens on the long run stays on the long run"...

Hi ladies!
I couldn't sleep last night and stumbled across this thread. I read the first seven pages before finally falling asleep. So encouraging!
I'll tell you my running story later
but I have two quick comments:
1) Thank you for the encouragement of walking/running
I got re-injured about a year ago because I started doing longer runs. I saw a PT who broke up some scar tissue in my left knee and I'm back at it now, although cautiously. I saved up and bought a pair of Newton running shoes and have been slowly breaking them in. Last week I did two miles on a track … running the straight aways and walking the curves. Felt like, "this is so small, I'll never really run again." Appreciate the encouragement of the walk/run … that is likely what I'm going to have to do from now on.
2) Someone mentioned aways back CW-X tights. Do they really work? I went to their website last night and looked around … but all I could find were men's tights and now women's.
Appreciate any feedback on them … they do look quite interesting.
-
Welcome Dawne-Hope!
I love the CW-X. I have the 3/4 and the full tights. All of mine are from the Stabilyx line. They keep my jiggle still and all the energy goes forward instead of up, down, and all around. I feel they are supportive around the knee as well. I feel like they are pushing me forward, which is nice!
It is a full workout to get into them. They look like they fit a 7 year old. But the compression is the point. This is the latest pair I bought. So pretty. My favourite combination is to wear with a periwinkle blue running dress (nobody needs to see my butt). Looks lovely with my purple shoes!
Your link took me to a site that showed women's. If you hover over "Explore Products", it changes to "Mens / Womens" and you can click on Womens to get to women's stuff.
http://cw-x.com/ExploreProducts.aspx?gender=womens...
They are spendy, but I gave away all my other running pants and only use these. I survived fine with just one pair of the 3/4 but eventually it was good to have the full lengths too. It was also nice to have one clean if the other was in the wash.
-
goldlining - Awesome! Thank you!
The nearest stores that carry them are in the St. Louis area so next time I'm up there I'm going to try on a pair … which sounds like an adventure.
Thanks again!
-
Goldlining - I love the quote
Ran an easy 2 miles yesterday. Didn't use a watch, just went by feel. It felt pretty bad at the beginning because I was tired and stiff from Sunday's run, but it loosened up as I went. I am glad today is a day off because the weather is rainy and windy here
Have a great day!
-
Gold - I've seen those tights and they look great for knee support, but from what you said it seems that they're tight around the waist and lower belly. Unfortunately, I have truncal lymphedema and have found that I can't wear any compression lower body garments as they prevent lymphatic fluid from moving from my trunk down to the inguinal nodes (located in the crease of the leg where it meets the body). I have to wear loose fitting shorts or capri pants or my truncal LE really flares. Just a FYI for those who may have a bit of truncal LE.
Just registered for a 10K on April 27th - it's called the Pike's Peek 10K in Rockville, MD. No, we don't climb any mountains during this run! The main commercial drag is called Rockville Pike, and this is a 10K straight down the Pike. It's a gradual downhill just about all the way, so it's my kind of race - no hills!!
-
So glad I found this thread! Can you add me to the calendar? I just found out that I made it into the Chicago Marathon (10/12). My bmx was 3/31 and I'm definitely ready to get back to training (slowly...).
-
My truncal LE is in the upper quadrant and don't seem to have it in the lower trunk. However I have swelling in my legs ever since my C section. I do find the compression on the legs helps to cut it back, like wearing airplane socks, and the fabric is almost like a constant massage on the surface of my calves and thighs (and tummy and behind). In my experience, I don't find the inguinal crease to be constricted. It actually seems to bridge over that area because the fabric will take the shortest path between two points. However, good observation that it's something to be cautious about.
-
welcome cocourt!
So nice for you to have the Chicago Marathon to pull you along the rehab journey!
-
I can't wait to be a part of this group! I'm planning to run Ragnar McDowell Mt. Campout , AZ, Nov 7/8th, 2014!
Before my diagnosis I was just getting into trail running and got up to a 15 miler. Now I'm at about 3 at a walk/run pace. It is frustrating.... but rewarding.
-
Thanks Natsfan and Goldlining for sharing your experiences with truncal LE and CW-x tights. I guess I'll have to try them and see what happens. I love my tights but I haven't worn them since last year. I'm about 10 lbs too big to fit into the ones I have at home and there is no way I'm going to buy a larger size! I tend to only wear them for my long runs and I have found that they help tremendously with the jiggle as well as keeping my IT band happy. I started wearing them when I was rehabbing the ITB and found they made a difference then and just kept wearing them. A word of warning on their "winter" ones, not really all that warm for winter in most of Canada, maybe suitable if you live in Vancouver... I tend to buy mine at race expos where they tend to be cheaper. Luckily one of the local stores that carries them always has a booth at the Ottawa Race Weeekend expo and they usually have a 20% off sale at the expo and their stores that weekend. That's when I buy mine, and I wear them until they are falling apart.
Congrats on getting into Chicago, cocort!
-
Welcome cocourt and livinin. Cocourt congrats on getting into Chicago! Livinin - I was part of a Ragnar team (road not trail) a few years ago. If this is your groups first, pm me if you want some tips. We learned some lessons the hard way : )
Have been thinking of those of you who ran Boston last year, and those who will be there on Monday. Go get em!
-
Lovetorun, please add me to the calendar for the Lovejoy Country Run 5K on May 17.
At the age of 58, this will be my first organized run of any kind. I am really a newbie and had set a very modest goal of running a 5K before the end of the year. So far I've only worked up to a very slow 1.5 miles, but my daughter is doing this run and invited her dad to do it with her since we'll be staying with her that weekend anyway for our granddaughter's piano recital. "Excuse me?" I said, "but I might just join you." She was thrilled and, like her dad, is very encouraging. So now the pressure's on. I've registered and I have a month to double my distance.
-
Annie - you'll love it. We're the same age, and I did my first organized run just 3 years ago and had a great time. If you can do 1.5 now, you'll be able to do the full 5K in a month. Don't worry about speed - just have fun. There is nothing like being at that starting line, surrounded by runners of all shapes and sizes, waiting for the starting gun or horn to sound. And you get to wear a bib with a number (just like a real runner) and usually they throw in a t-shirt. What can be better?? Good for you for deciding to take on this challenge - I bet you'll become addicted.
I bet half the fun of it was shocking your daughter when you casually mentioned that you'd like to run too!
-
AnnieLane, good for you! Your ace in the hole is that if you can run 1.5miles, finishing will be no problem. When you run out of running, you got walking! Go for it!
For the calendar (rolling over into 2015), I've registered for the WDW Half Marathon (Donald Duck medal) for 10 January 2015.
The general registration for the 5K, 10K, Half, and Full (including the Goofy and Dopey combinations) at the WDW Marathon weekend opens on Tuesday at noon Eastern time for those who are interested!
-
Ladies, you are the greatest! Thanks for the encouragement!
-
Goldlining- you are serious about those Disney races! Maybe after I experience the Wine and Dine in November, I'll understand why:)
Princessrn-good luck this weekend! Groovygirls- have fun in Boston! So awesome:)
I've been getting in lots of 3 mile runs and did 5 miles last sunday, so feeling good about the recovery process. My exciting news is that I got in the pool today and swam laps for the first time since the whole BC journey began last July. 30 minutes of freestyle, back, and breast. I was even able to get out of the pool my usually way of lifting myself out at the end of the lane and not taking the stairs. Here is to progress!
Hope everyone has a great weekend!
-
Yay Aloha! Funny how something like getting out of the pool the way you used to is such a great milestone today, huh? So glad for that bit of return to normalcy for you!
-
Lovestorun,
Thanks for the welcome! I've done one other Ragnar just before my BC diagnosis. Since this one is a campout out I'm looking forward to actually being able to spend time with the other "vans". I'm with an expereinced Ragnar group that has been to a couple different states running them. They have tons of info! But thanks for anything you want to share!
I love the encouragement of this group.
-
Annie Lane - you will make it!
Aloha - congrats on bit or normalcy you reclaimed. It must have felt awesome!
Ran 3 miles today. I have decided to taper a little early so I am well-rested for my half marathon on 4/27. I will have to start looking for my next "goal race". I should be cleared to get back into a pool on 5/5, so maybe I will look for a Sprint Tri that my DH can do the bike leg of. I am hoping to be back to full strength by the end of summer and tackle all 3 legs of a Sprint Tri myself, but I am working on returning in baby-steps so I don't over do it. Such as strange thing for me, but I just keep telling myself that every old thing I do now is a first since my journey began.
Have a great weekend!!!!!
-
Well, it wasn't pretty but I ran the Bunny Rock 5K. I made it to the start and to the finish. You got a nice shirt, bunny ears and sun glasses. It started and finished in Grant Park in Chicago. It was a beautiful day and the race was to support homeless animals in the city. My sister and niece ran with me so that was great. I had to run walk and was slow but I know I can do it again once this is all over.
-
princessrn - YOU FINISHED! You finished! Congratulations! Love and hugs to you!
