DIEP 2014

LOL, Teacher. It is so true. I am vertically challenged too, and after my bmx things were not easy to reach. At first I was using the barbeque tongs to reach things in the bottom of the washer, and the pantry, then my son bought me one of these. I will post a pic. I still use it even now that I am healed. I will need it again for my diep, and I am glad to have it!!! I bet they are cheap, or he wouldn't have gotten it for me.
I bet you can find one on Amazon, or ebay cheap.
-
brendarj, you will do wonderfully. I have my moments but then I realize this is just a blip and I choose to see my life as fun and fabulous and fighting the indignities tossed my way.
Waiting a call for dr about skin peeled off by tape. Is this normal?
-
Thanks, Goldie4040. I will get one.
-
Dyvgrl, Goldie, MartyJ and BDavis thanks for the info on recovery time. I think I will go into this believing I will be superwoman with no complications and quick recovery (ha, I am knocking on wood as I type that!) No, really I will definitely have a back-up plan for work, I think I can get someone else to assist me if needed, would have to share the pay, but better than no pay, right? I know I will have to be off, or close to off, pain meds to work, totally forgot about the drains, bathing, hair washing! Don't want to scare off the clients Better to have this done now and take care of my health first. Recovery will be whatever it will be, I'll try to be prepared for a longer one.
J1971, K79 and Teacher - you all sound like you are doing well with your recoveries, yay!
Teacher I love your attitude and sense of humor.
What is the best way to "hang up" the drains? I was offered a discount through insurance for mastectomy bras that have pockets hanging off them to hold drains, but I think I've read some people use pins, lanyards or belts to hold them?
-
when I had my MX I attached them to my camisole with safety pins and tucked them in my pants when out in public or around people. You couldnt even see them. I know the DIEP drains are in the lower nether regions sometimes so not sure how you deal with drain "balls" but I'm guessing you could tuck those somewhere too lol.
-
For you new DIEPer's (and soon to be's)....."Sock Humor"........
-
Sunone - for DIEP I was given a belt type thing that went around my waist that the drains clipped onto. For going in public, I had a cross body soft purse that I tucked them into or pinned to clothing. After 1st revision (Stage 2), at a different hospital, they gave me 2 vests with pockets. Don't worry too much about the drains - the hospital will give you something. It is always helpful to have some big safety pins (quilt pins) just in case you need to clip to clothing. A strong word about clipping to clothing - just be sure that you pin lower drains to clothing that doesn't get yanked down to go to the bathroom. It can be a bit painful and you can yank the drain out. Just a bit of caution!
-
Well I have decided if I am nervous on the big day I am going to think of- Wilbur, socks, power tools to shave with, drain balls ( I especially like that one) and pants falling down.. I am sure to be smiling. And knowing all of you have empowered me to be brave, that brings a tear of joy to my eye!
Teacher- I am so impressed on how you are doing!!
-
Marty...I swear, everytime I envision the "pulling the drains down with the pants" my eyes start to water, my toes curl up in spasm and my eyes roll back to my brain....eeeeuuuuuwwwwwwww!
No surgeries this week??? teacher....you're doing great....hope everyone else is moving down the healing road too.
goldie....did you get in touch with kuka????
-
I'm having surgery on Thursday. I messaged to the person it said to at the top of the board but it never got added. I'm having BMX with DIEP flaps. I'm getting more nervous by the day but I am so ready to get past the surgery.
Everyone's posts are so helpful. Thank you guys!
-
well then Wynne50.....in your pockets...I'm sure you're in the "crazy mode", but you will do fine. Are you having your surgery there in Texas?
I'm sure jmb will get you added in time. Speaking from experience, it can be a challenge to keep the list updated, especially during your own surgery time and recovery. H,mmmm.....actually, she might be on vacation too...and taking a break for a bit.
-
aw, Wynne, Thanks for speaking up. All will be well and we'll see you on the other side!
-
Thinking of you, Wynne! You got this and we're with you all the way!
-
Wynne, we're with you! The anticipating is the worst. Just show up and let the docs and nurses take care of everything.
-
Wynne - sending positive vibes for Thursday. If you are like me, you will feel so much better when you wake up after surgery is over. Probably a combination of good drugs and knowing I made it to the other side!
-
I'm almost two weeks out after left DIEP flap, trying to transition to Aleve from oxycodone but have lots of pain in the evening that Aleve can't fix. Anyone else have discomfort under the armpit? I don't know if it's from the sentinel node biopsy but it's so irritated it feels like there's an incision there. Baby powder helps a bit. It's actually more painful than the new swollen breast.
-
drains. Ugh. I made the mistake of pinning them to my sweat pants once. Yanked my pants down in a hurry to go pee. Holy crap I dropped to my knees after ripping the stitch out 90% of the way. Don't ever make that mistake. Oy!!!
-
Comet - I think the sentinel node biopsy is often painful from what I have read on the boards. There will be internal incisions where the nodes are removed, and my surgeon explained that they often have to move the nerves out of the way, resulting in temporary numbness and some pain in your arm that seems far away from any incisions. Have you called your surgeon to ask? Hope you feel better soon.
-
Wynne, we'll be thinking of you and sending out positive thoughts to you on Thursday.
Drains.....so I will definitely remember not to pin them to pants, yikes, that sounds painful -after surgery, will be looking forward to drains coming out, but not that way!
-
Comet, the node biopsy left me with pain and a weird sensation under my arms like I was chaffed, and my skin was kind of burning. I also tried topical stuff, but it's from the inside, not the outside, so nothing really helped but time, and healing. Now, I can practically feel the razor when I shave. Hang in there. This two shall pass.
I loved my drain belt. I don't know if it will have enough loops for my diep. I am hoping all my drains are out before I need to go anywhere except the PS office for a follow up visit, and drain pull.
Nihani, no...I haven't written Kuka yet. I will. She is so busy during the week. She is full time now, and she has taken on a lot of new duties since they added another PS to the practice. In the evening she is so busy with her kids, and I hate to bother her. I will write her on Friday. I talked to her through her whole recovery, and I don't remember her mentioning a binder. I do know she had compression after her lipo, but that was stage 2.
-
Wynne, wishing you the very best and speedy recovery!
Comet, I have the underarm pain too. 3 weeks out. It is getting better but slowly. I think it will take a while. Regular pain meds don't seem to help but I haven't found it bad enough to ask for gabapentin. I might if it's still like this when I go back to work.
-
I had all of my drains for a couple of weeks. I found it easier to pin all 4 of them to a long ribbon. That way I could change clothes, take shower, pull down pants, etc without pulling the drains. As far as clothes are concerned, I wore a hospital gown the entire time I was there. I wore large button down shirts and scrub pants or soft pull string pjs at home. I had no bandages or binders. I did not worry about shaving anothing because I was still recovering from 6 months of chemo. Actually, I was so used to being bald everywhere that I did not notice when it slowly started growning.
Lemon and Sunone - relax, you will do just fine.
Teacher and Katski - I am glad that you are both recovering nicely.
Rosebud - I also had major skin irritation between the boobs. I starting using Aveeno cream. The cream seemed to help a little.
Wynne- Good luck on Thursday.
-
Wynne, all the best for Thursday!
Teacher, a lot of us developed a reaction to the tape and it can start pulling skin off. The paper tape is usually tolerated better than the heavy surgical tape - hopefully your PS will be able to give you something that works for you.
-
Wynne, sending positive, healing energy your way. We are here for you. Check in when you feel up to it and let us know how you are doing.
-
Once again, I am way behind on reading the board, but I did update the surgery list, including Wynne50 who is scheduled in TWO days, and etoile and sunone who are scheduled for April.
-
hi folks,
I used this wallet/belt for my drains for all of my surgeries and it work find.
-
Wynne50, I just read your post about people seeing your breasts when they use the Doppler. I showed all the women that came to visit. Lol! Mostly relatives, a few friends. Totally the morphine and Percocet talking! One of my pastors came to visit and no one else was in the room at the time. Thankfully I didn't try to show him my new boobs, but I vaguely remember running my mouth about the surgery and he was so uncomfortable. He only stayed about 5 minutes. Hahaha!!
Sunone, I just pinned my drains to my clothes because I didn't want to spend the money on a special bra. All 4 of mine came out on day 11, so it was no big deal to pin them. I never left the house during that time either. For showering, I used the nylon bag that my Q-ball pain pump was in. It had a strap that I put around my neck.
Comet08, I was worried about being on Percocet for too long and getting addicted. I tried to go off before week 2 was over and I felt like crap. My BS lectured me about staying on it, so I did for 4 weeks. I had no trouble going off and switching to ibuprofen, which I only used for about a week.
-
I will have my stage 2 in May. My PS told me that she will lipo near my knees, inner and outer thigh and love handles. She said I will feel lousy for about a week and then will need to wear compression on those areas for several weeks, maybe months, and will have swelling. I'm not thrilled about compression down to my knees in the summer. Any thought on that? For those who have had the fat grafting, what was the recovery like? I'm nervous about the lipo. I also wondered how the PS makes the nipple. Believe it or not, I haven't asked any questions or read anything about that yet.
-
Also curious to know about fat grafting, which I will also need. My PS said she will take it from "wherever I like it the least" so I am thinking saddlebags.
A darker concern that I also want to bring up with her (but not dwell on) is what if I need to do the other side at some point (Please no). What is the next best flap to take, and avoid lipoing that area.
-
annajo....not a question anyone with a uni wants to ask of their surgeon....but truly, a very courageous and smart topic for you to discuss. Good for you to be as informed as you can be. It seems like everything else surrounding flap surgery, many different surgeons result in many different protocols.
I'll be discussing fat grafting/lipo with my PS in early April. I have no idea at this point what his plan or protocol is....I'll post the details when I get them for me. There are, though, lots of 2013 gals who have gotten through the lipo/fat graft stage and I'm sure they'll be popping in to comment.
