edited June 2014 in Stage I Breast Cancer

Hi All,

I need some advice I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer and had a double mastectomy 1 year ago this January.  They just ran an MRI which is showing a lot of breast tissue left behind.  Why would my breast surgeon say she performed a double mastectomy and didn't. Just when I've been feeling 100% I get this thrown at me.  I opt out of radiation when getting my mastectomy.  Now I have to go through another surgery.  Not fair.

Alicia - it is definitely not fair. Is it time for a second opinion on the MRI? Honestly this is the first time I've heard of this. Any chance they mixed up the MRI's? So sorry.

Alicia, I agree with FarmerLucy, that's so, not fair, and I have never heard of it either. I know they can't get every bit of tissue, but a lot left behind?

I'd be wanting an explanation, or a second opinion. I hope you get it sorted out and that it's been a mistake. I wish you all the very best, and really feel for you having to go through this.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Hi Alicia.

We're sorry about all you're going through... If you decide to pursue a second opinion, here's more information on how
to do that, from the main Breastcancer.org site (just click the link)

    Best wishes,

Thank you all, no definitely not a misreading will take your advise and going for a second opinion next week.  Just the thought of going through another surgery makes me want to cry.  At least this time no lymph nodes will not be removed. Thank you!

A lot of people mistakenly think that a BMX guarantees that they will never get BC again. My radiologist just had a case. The woman had her BMX 10 years ago, injured herself getting off a bus, came to him for an X-ray and he saw something...

He explained that it's impossible to remove ALL the breast tissue. There will always be some left behind. Those who get BMX's still need to be checked out.

At least you know this before bad news! You have still greatly reduced the risk and it's unclear from how much you've told us whether rads would have been such a good idea. You probably have way less breast tissue than you did before.

Please seek a second opinion but if your goal is to have 100% of your breast tissue gone, that might not be realistic. Find out if further surgery is really necessary!
