no flush is not as effective....try the Slo Niacin, which you can get at Walmart (doctors don't even necessarily know that, from researching I pointed that fact out to mine).

Ruth, I agree. My best friend is a very experienced nurse and was taking flush free niacin herself until I told her the difference. She checked on it and switched.

Here is an article explaining the different niacin types.

Can anyone tell me what is "good cholestrol and bad cholestrol?" Apparently my test shows I have both.

Total Cholesterol is split into HDL, LDL, VLDL which means high density lipid, low density lipid, very low density lipid.  HDL is referred to as the "good" cholesterol and LDL as the "bad" cholesterol.  These lipid profiles can be examined with additional tests by particle size and for Lp(a) Cholesterol.  However, a blood test for Homocysteine level has been indicated as a better test for cardio risk factors.

thx cp418, what I should have said was both my good and bad cholesterol were "up". The doc ascertained from that and some other things that over all my heart attack risk was very low. I take it that meant the elevated bad C was counteracted by the elevated good C.

Here is a link to find slo niacin in your area. Walgreens is a good bet.

My PCP recommended niacinamide and it did lower my total by 25 pts.  But it also gave me dry skin and dry eyes.  I stopped taking it after I quit eggs and dairy.  Just changing my diet did the trick.

Cholesterol UPDATE - I know some of you were interested in the use of plant sterol supplements to lower cholesterol. I just recieved my bloodwork back from last week.  In addition, I'd been eating oat bran cereal daily and taking a fiber supplement.  See comparison of previous results below.

    Aug 2013: Total Cholesterol - 239, Trig - 63, LDL - 114, HDL - 112

    Feb 2014:  Total Cholesterol - 198, Trig - 80, LDL - 98, HDL - 84

Bad news is TSH results went from 4.540 to 10.780 and my Thyroid antibody panel was negative.

My GP recommended I start on the lowest dose of Synthroid 25mcg and repeat thyroid labs in May.

I feel like banging my head against a wall.  I stopped eating all the Kale salads and smoothies in case it was triggering the hypothyroid symptoms and then I get these abnormal labs back.  I have an appt with my nutritionist in mid-March so I'll be wondering wahat she will say about these lab changes. Scared

I'm clueless - so any ideas or information on what to expect when I start this thyroid medication will be much appreciated.  I am taking low dose of iodine supplement for a few months for what it's worth.....

CP418, yes, if you were taking iodine, that could explain the problem. There is a group of doctors and naturopath types who run around the internet touting iodine supplementation. They blithely recommend taking huge doses of iodine and completely downplay the risk of it. Thing is that although iodine deficiency is indeed a bad thing, it is also fairly rare if you eat a decent and balanced diet and use iodized salt.

There was a discussion of iodine a while back (now locked) that had a lot of links and info: http://community.breastcancer.org/topic_post?forum_id=79&id=814814&page=1

Momine EXACTLY!!  I tried this supplement with the okay from my GP and nutritionist. For me., it aggrevated my subclinical hypothroidism into the full blown condition.  Now I'm starting Armour Thyroid prescription from my GP to try to get this problem back in balance.  Sad

Oh dear! How much iodine did your GP say was OK?

I second the Iodine concern! it will take a few weeks for your TSH to show it's true colors without it.

Hi, a bit off the thyroid topic...

I started statins and within a week had excruciating back muscle spasms, pain. I stopped the statins immediately. The pain has lessened but isn't gone. My CK blood levels were elevated, above normal.

As mentioned earlier, I've gone on a strict diet using most of the recommendations from this thread (not niacin.) I'll retest blood lipids at the end of march. Not sure what I will do if levels haven't gone down. My total chol was 285, up almost 80 points in one year despite no change in diet, though coincided w starting Femara.

For those taking plant sterols, what dosage are you taking? Solgar? How much omega 3?

    Thanks.

I take a small amount of iodine and my TSH is fine. Wonder if I need to remove that from my supplements? hmm

sgreenarch, did you see the post about stanols from cardiologist Dr William Davis (Wheat Belly)?

In summary, he states that "while sterols do indeed reduce LDL cholesterol, they may also increase risk for heart disease and trigger plaque growth when ingested in more than normal quantities".

Be careful not to fix one problem and cause another.

Sgreenarch, note our situations are different, but I'm on a statin as a bc treatment. The back pain and spasms you were experiencing were likely from the statin depleting your coQ10.  I had the same experience.

If your CK enzymes are elevated from taking the statin, there are several different statins to try...furthermore, you can try beginning by taking it once a week and increasing the dose week by week, carefully watching your ck levels and symptoms.   There are also cardiologists who are also endocrinologists and are lipid specialists.  Some hospitals have lipid clinics.  If your physician feels that the benefits of taking a statin outweigh the risks, then I would seek out a lipid specialist.

Zogo, Iodine can help regulate the thyroid gland, as long as you are working with a practitioner who is monitoring yourTSH and Iodine levels.

Another suggestion for cholesterol is magnesium, which can lessen muscle spasms. Magnesium has many benefits. I suggest Dr. Carolyn Dean's book, see link. I found her book very helpful. http://drcarolyndean.com/magnesium_miracle/

    Thanks jg10,

I take chelated magnesium daily and am aware of all the good things magnesium can do. I convinced my MIL to take it, too.

My TSH is fine at 1.15, What is "iodine level" called? I think I started taking it after reading about it on the Wheat Belly Blog.

Zogo, As you probably know, most traditional doctors do not consider an iodine efficiency, not unless an individual lives in an area with low iodine in the soil, which increases the likelihood of the condition. However, integrative doctors and some chiropractors take it into consideration in their hypothyroid patients. I had the 24 hr urine test, under the guidance of an integrative doctor, as is described in the attached link, and the test showed some defficiency. I added more iodine via food, iodized salt, and a multivitamin with the daily requirement and that did the job. Keep in mind that iodized salt may loose some of its iodine while cooking, so it is best to add it after. http://www.naturalendocrinesolutions.com/articles/comparing-4-methods-iodine-testing/

Jg10, I did not know that about magnesium. I have been taking it since finishing treatment, mainly because there is no serious downside and it is supposed to help with calcium absorption (osteopenia). Good to know that it may also help against excess cholesterol.

If your HDL levels are way over 50  say...(mine is over 100) means it doesn't matter what the total is.......  Modern thinking is that HDL trumps LDL and NO MEDS R necessary.... repeat, no meds r necessary...

I quit my iodine last week. Don't know if it was related, but man I was really lethargic for several days. It seems to have passed (crossed fingers) and I hope my thyroid numbers will stay in the healthy range.

Mountains, I agree that the Total Cholesterol is not that relevant these days, but I'm not so sure about the HDL trumping all other numbers. My HDL was 61 (now 79) and my lipidologist (Dr Tara Dall) was very concerned. Specifically regarding my particle number (LDL-P over 2300), my ApoB (at 117), and my Lp(a) at 60. These are the values that we are working to reduce w/o using statins.
