I know this is not about BC, but I trust your collective wisdom, experience and advice.  Having my first colonoscopy last week.  My gastro says that I can have milkshakes on the day before the procedure, in addition to the clear liquid diet.  My husband's doctor didn't allow that, and most of what I see on Google doesn't allow it either.  Maybe I shouldn't have them.  I'm just curious if anyone else has been allowed to have milkshakes.  Dairy Queen is awfully close to my house, but I don't want to ruin it and have to endure the prep again.

I'd stick with the clear diet - clear broth and light colored drinks and juices. I was not allowed to have anything dark to red colored beforehand - no blue grape juice, pomegranate or tomato juice or V-8. I am pretty sure I was not allowed to have milk in my tea, either, when had mine last year.

I'd go with what your Dr (not the quack Dr. Google) says.  Long story short -that I will not go into - I will never have another colonscopy per Drs orders.   If I need to be checked again it will be with a barium enema.

I had 2 and only clear broths...jello was allowed

My last one was July 2013 so i don't think things changed since then

"When in doubt, don't" seems to apply here. It certainly won't hurt your colonoscopy if you skip the milkshakes during prep. Why not wait and give yourself one for a treat afterwards instead?

That is odd! Milk becomes a solid when it hits your stomach. And I was told No dairy products the day before. Also eat very light for a few days before; it makes it so much easier.

I just had my first coloniscopy and I dreaded the prep. I had the four gallon prep. But it wasn't so bad.

The salty taste was the worst part. I used crystal light drops and that helped a lot! I also poured it into a water bottle each time to flavor it and to drink it. But I kept the jug in the bathroom with me because once I started "going" I couldn't leave the toilet for 8 hours, lol. My bathroom floor was cold so next time I will wear slippers. I wore out my iPad battery, but otherwise it wasn't bad, and the actual procedure was a piece of cake!!!

    Best of luck.

I've had two colonoscopies and a mini prep before a hysterectomy. For the colonoscopy  this past summer - I drank 1 gallon - I used Arnold Palmer iced tea - no cal. mixed with the laxative powder and I think I kicked off with a couple of pills. 4 gallons???? are you sure? that is 16 quarts!!!!

No milkshakes.  Like Andrea said, it becomes solid food in the gut, and your goal is to clear out ALL solid food so the scope can get a clear view of the tunnel.  And no red or purple colored jello or juice; any residual color left in the gut can look like an abnormality.

What you CAN eat is clear liquids--jello, apple juice, broth, black coffee and tea--and, oddly enough, hard candy that is NOT red or purple colored.  Like wintergreen lifesavers. What a yummy diet.

    Good luck!

I am going to ask for the camera pill they just invented.

I don't want the camera pill because then they can't take out any polyps at the same time.  I'm sure that I'm going to have polyps because my parents always did.  Grrrr.  Well, at least it is one of those things that I've known to expect, unlike BC!

    Mary,

The prep is annoying, ( no milkshakes ) drink lots of chicken broth. But the procedure, you sleep through. So much easier than any of the cancer crap  you have endured.

Definitely no milkshakes the day before--you don't want to get through the prep and find that they can't do it. I had colon cancer 15 years ago, and have had lots of colonoscopies, and I would not want to jeopardize that prep. Some of the things that I eat/drink are banana popsicles (no red or orange), ginger ale, chicken broth (the instant is easy and a break from sweeter things), Sprite/etc. Also I find it easier to start the prep earlier than the instructions say (usually start at 4 pm for an early morning scope and drink 8 ounces every 10 minutes--you do not have to do this--it will just make you miserable). I start around noon, and watch movies or something while I drink it through the afternoon. Have it as cold as you can get it and drink it over ice, and alternate with something else to drink to get rid of the salty taste. If I drink it faster it makes me sick, and there is no benefit in terms of the scope itself to doing it faster.

Good luck! The prep is the worst part--you will be blissfully unaware during the procedure, and then you can wake up and head to Dairy Queen!

Yeah, I find that very weird too.  After all you want your colon to be spankin clean so they can check it out thoroughly.  I am lucky that my Doc uses the "pill" prep.  Have to take multiple ones, but for sure, it did the trick.  My only mistake this last time was having it done late in the day (only time he had and I had concerns which ended up with all well).  I felt sick and queazy by that time.  But as the others have said, they give you the happy juice and out you go.  Walk in the park after cancer tx!

    Good luck!

Thanks all for the advice.  I am doing the pills.  No, I don't want to jeopardize the prep and have to go through it again!

FYI,  I had my first colonoscopy today.  Prep was NOT as bad as I thought it was going to be (not fun, however).  Actual procedure was easy/peasy and the doc may have been shocked at all the questions I was asking (hey, drug me a bit and i get chatty).  Just thought I would pipe up and reassure those that haven't had one that they are not bad and the docs/nurses go out of their way to keep you from getting embarrassed.

Bugs--thanks for sharing a positive experience.  I am so dreading tomorrow and being hungry.  Hope it will not be as bad as I thought it would be.  I hope to be so drugged that I don't remember any of it!

@mary625, I think it's very likely you won't remember. I've had more than one colonoscopy and don't remember any of them. I think they used the same sort of drugs ("conscious sedation") for my liver biopsy, and I don't remember a thing about that either (except how freaked out I was beforehand when I mistakenly thought they were only going to give me a local anaesthetic). Also, last year I was in the hospital so sick with pneumonitis that I had to be put on a ventilator for a short time. While talking to my mom last week on the phone last week, she told me that I resisted having the ventilator put in, but thanks to wonder drugs, that was the first I knew about it. I don't remember it at all.

Well, I had the colonoscopy last week.  I did have one milkshake after confirming with the doctor's office twice that it was okay to do so.  They didn't tell me that I wasn't prepared well.  I did have some diarrhea later that day, which I suspect was the milkshake, so I probably won't do that in the future.  And speaking of the future, I will be back there at one of the shortest intervals--3 years.  :(  I had two polyps, and both turned out to be adenatamous or pre-cancerous.  This is the same kind that Dr. Oz got and acted like his life had just been saved with the removal.  Less drama for me, of course, but I just hate to have yet another crappy thing to worry about.  Cancer--I hate, hate, hate it!!!!! or as I say, it's the gift that just keeps on giving.

3 yrs does not sound like a "shortest interval" for the next colonoscopy considering that they found polyps.  I don't know about ILC but I know that some types of BC (IBC for one) 'like' to metatise to the colon.   Also you say you have a family history.

But then -  I'm not medical personel so can't really say anything along that line.
