Bone Scan - 2/20

I've been having more pain in back in a slightly different area for a while. I've had a lot of arthritis for years (and now osteoporosis).  So to be on the safe side, my PA ordered a new Bone Scan which was on 2/20 (Thurs).  Last scan had been about 3+ yrs ago.   Weather was horrible - sustained  winds at 45-50, gusts to 75 and wind chills in the minus and I had 35 miles to drive into the wind.

Fri afternoon I got a call from my PA's RN with the report.  No signs of mets/cancer in bones anywhere - YES.  Unfortunately did show more degeration in spine so will be having so more suphisticate scan to check on that which will handle but NO METS!

Aug will be 5 yrs since DXd IBC, Stage IIIc and as far as I know today, I'm still NED.  That ain't bad.

Kicks -- GREAT news.  I too had a bone scan because of hip & rib pain which came out of nowhere.  Can I ask your age?  The scan was NED but showed lots of degenerative progression in feet & right hip.  I would guess it is osteoarthritis with some plantar fascitis thrown in just for the hell of it.  I'm 57 btw.

    shelly - I'm 67.

That's great that your Bone Scan was clear of the nasty breast.   Would have been better if it hadn't showed degeneration but there are things that can help with that.  What are they planning on doing?    Have you had a bone density test yet?  If you haven't yet, that's a possibility to check for osteoporosis.

kicks! so amazing, and great! i am almost 2 years, and since having various horrible pains, they did a nuclear bone imaging on me a couple weeks ago. showed degenerative changes, and i am only 54! when this started, i had none, and was in great shape, xcept for a lil case of cancer! and why would my path report not explain where it IS?  i am having problems with my treatment center, its making me crazy...and after chemo, i was slightly osteopoenic, and after 6 mos arimidex, am full on osteoporotic...crap. the only thing is, in the path report which was minimally informative, to me, it said;  "no DEFINATE signs of osseous metastases". it  is just that D word that is freaking me out. thanks if you can answer, and, even if you can't. peace

Kicks:  I have had two, maybe 3, dexa bone scans, and just the one last fall indicates my bones were gaining some thickness instead of losing.  That was good news and also that I don't have any osteoporosis (yet).   I think my working out 3 times a week at the gym is helping, but have to back off a bit because of the foot pain.  I'm wearing some hard arch supports every day which I think helps, also have a foot massager.

Kathec:  I'm one of those that believes chemo affected everything -- bones, muscles, nerves, you name it.  Congrats that your report was NED !!!!

shelly - Glad the gym is helping you.  During the winter, I'm at the gyn 3 - 5 times a week. During summer, I don't go very often but then there's not a day that goes by that I'm not outside doing very active 'stuff'.  I garden, mow (my yard and 3 other yards to help out the people who live there - 2 young single mothers who are working as had as they can to take care of their kids and an older lady who is not able to  - with my push mower - in case you haven't figured it put I LIKE to mow  hate to 'weed eat' though so Hubby does that), ride (our horses and my bicycle).  In spare time I'm either fishing, flyfishing or out in the boat.  So not many summer gyn workouts but definately workouts.

Kicks, I see "SD" under your name -- you live in So. Dakota?  That would explaint the fishing, boating & horseback riding.  I like tennis in the warmer months but didn't play at all last summer.

YUP!  Western So Dak, on the prairie just a very little bit east of the Black Hills.

I HATE tennis!      Tennis HATES me!     I have tried several times to learn to play it since I was a teen (67 now) with several different instructors but no way.  I'm not bad at returning balls BUT I CAN NOT SERVE IT OVER THE NET!

Kicks--what great news!  Not about the bone degeneration in your back, that totally sucks, but my 90-year-old mom has degeneration and is still happily active. Stay warm.

Last year, I had severe radiating pain down my right leg (sciatica). My PCP put it down to "muscle strain," but as time went on, it didn't get any better & I starting worrying about the possibility of mets.

Finally, after several more visits to Dr., the PA that saw me last decided I should have an MRI. This after four excruciating months!

Can't tell how really happy I was to find out that I had three herniated discs - but no mets! I'm much better now, and without surgery (spinal injections a couple of times, exercises & hanging upside down), so glad! Funny how your point of view changes!

Rock on NED!  But sorry about the arthritis.  Nice to have "normal" aches and pains though, huh?
