Fatigue-is this normal?
I wasn't sure where to post this....but here goes.
I'm tired all.the.time and I haven't even started chemo or rads yet. No, my background is that I have I'd 3 surgical procedures since 11/27 and I do have low iron....so my logical side says of course you are tired!!
However, I'm just concerned that this is somehow evidence that I'm not going to handle chemo well, or even worse that I'm physically unable to overcome this cancer. I will be starting chemo next week and the day after I will receive an iron infusion. But, I'm just exhausted. I was lucky enough to have my 4 year old spend the night out, and I slept alot of the day away.
IDK, I guess I just want to know if anyone else is feeling like this before chemo. Thanks

I suspect you hit the nail on the head about having multiple surgeries, add low iron, AND just the simple fact of all the stress from this diagnosis----of course you'll be tired. You may be surprised by how chemo affects you. They'll probably be giving you steroids right before your infusion, and for me, they caused me insomnia!
You can do this and we'll be here for you. Hang in there.

Thanks for your responseI guess I'm just worried about when the next shoe is going to drop so-to-speak. It's been one thing after another since dx and I've been mentally exhausted and now I guess the physical side is catching up.

Have your Vit D level and B complex levels checked. In the northern hemisphere, we have less sunshine and thus lower levels of D and B+ are common and really effect us in so many ways.

My B is low, I will have to start doing B shots too. -
Of course you are exhausted! Your body does not just bounce back from surgeries, even if you feel "healed." You have had multiple surgeries, your mind has been running non stop, and your iron and B is low. PLUS, you have a 4 year old. Girl, I'm tired just typing all that. Chemo will be tough, just because it is. But you can do this and make sure your doc is treating your iron/B issues, too. If you are having trouble sleeping at night, or the crazy thoughts are waking you up at night...please make sure you have something you can take to help you sleep. You need uninterrupted sleep to heal.

Bugs-thanks girl....I'm hard on myself, always have been. I don't know where this comes from, but I always think that I'm supposed to be able to rise up and carry on. I've always been able to, but this cancer dx has kicked my ass. I just needed to hear from others that I'm not making excuses or that this is to be expected. As I'm typing this, I realize that it sounds ridiculous...but it is the truth.

Hi TangandChris - I had my exchange surgery on Jan 10 - thought it would be a pretty easy recovery and actually after the first ten days, I was doing pretty well. Then I crashed. I've been spending about 22 out of 24 hours in bed. an barely shower without having to lie down & that's with a shower chair (I'm 52- not 90). My PS did my bloodwork last week & I'm clearly anemic (don't know yet whether it's iron/B12 or something else). What you are feeling isn't 'tired' it's flat out fatigue because your red blood cells aren't delivering enough oxygen to anywhere in your body. Make SURE that your onc stays on top of your blood panels throughout your chemo and that you cut yourself a break. You can't just rise up and carry on - part of the battle is focusing on YOUR HEALTH NEEDS as your #1 priority. (((hugs)))

Ziggy-thanks for the perspective! I hope you find out soon what is going on with your anemia. you are right though, this is not just a tired feeling, this is fatigue! Like getting off the couch is a huge effort at times.((hugs))
It's also bad when I feel like I need a shower, but it seems like too much effort to do so. uggg
