For anyone interested, if you are a Disney passholder (or possibly for holders of Disney credit cards, not sure) the registration for the Disneyland race weekend (Anaheim CA) opens at noon EST tomorrow. The 10K is on the Saturday Aug 30 and the Half is Sunday the 31st. Doing both is the "Dumbo Double Dare" and is eligible for bonus medal.

Open registration is Jan 28, I believe and last year the 10K sold out in about an hour, while the half sold out in a day or so once the open registration started.

I'm grabbing my registrations tomorrow! (Or hope to, anyway!)

Thanks lovestorun for setting up this thread!

Goldlining - do you happen to know or remember when the registration for the Dopey opens or any other of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend events? I'm going to have to search on what I need to do for early registration! I so don't want to miss registering for 2015.

I'm going to hit the stationary bike in thbasement instead of going for a run outside. It's -friggin' cold out this morning! I need to step up my training, I'm running Around The Bay at the end of March as part of a three person relay team, we each run 10k. I ran the 30k last year and just had to participate in the 120th anniversary of this race.

Yup! The #WDWMarathon weekend at Walt Disney World Resort info is:

    • April 16, 2014 – Annual Passholder early registration opens
    • January 7-11, 2015 – Event date

Non-passholder reg usually opens about a week after passholder. Usually you can set up an alert to get an email reminder from runDisney as well. I don't see the sign-up for that yet - still shows the 2014 info and results button, but

    http://www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-marathon/

will have the info and link to register for a reminder when they start preparing for next year.

Also, if you go to that page, there is a drop-down menu for Events, that has links to each of the events, and each of them will likely have a reminder service too. You can also follow @runDisney on Twitter and they tweet reminders.

To sort of plan your registering -- all of these registrations are really long lead times, and they sell out quite early. I usually end up with three future events booked before I run the first of them.

Currently the Expedition Everest challenge is open for registration (May 3, 2014).

the Tower of Terror 10 miler in early October opens for passholder reg Feb 5.

Wine and Dine Half Nov 7-8 (a nice evening half) opens for passholder reg Feb 28

Princess Half Feb 19-22 2015 opens for passholder reg July 7

Tinker Bell half May 7-10 2015 (at Disneyland Anaheim) opens for passholder reg Aug 6.

They are starting to offer 10Ks at many of the Half events, and for DLHalf and TinkHalf they have a 10K+Half bonus medal. They also have 5K and kids runs (diaper dash etc.) with kid-friendly silicone medals that make a nice tune-up run if you go early (or are doing the Dopey).

I love this thread - one of my goals after treatment (which just finished chemo last Thursday) is to run in the Cherry Blossom 10 miler, in Washington, DC this April. Training starts next week for me and this will be a great way to keep me motivated for my first long run since my diagnosis!

Thanks for the info goldlining! I've recently started liking the runDisney Facebook page, I'm guessing they will have similar posts here as they do on Twitter (I'm not on Twitter). I've also signed up for the email updates. I ran Goofy in 2010 and remembered being at my computer refreshing the page when registration opened. It also opened right after the race weekend in January. As long as I don't miss registration, it's all I care about. I need the 10th anniversary Goofy medal to go with my 5th anniversary one! Unfortunately we are not passholders, we live too far away to make it worth it so can't take advantage of the early registration.

I had a right mastectomy 12/10/13.  Was Struggling with profound fatigue ( new for me) and would get lightheaded.  Lots of snow and cold here - was missing my daily hikes with my dog.  Two weeks ago started walking the indoor track at YMCA.  Now up to 1.5 miles and not lightheaded!  Also doing 2-3 miles on recumbent bike! My surgeon okayed 5 pound free weights for my right arm and that feels wonderful .

Hope to start running again in future ....

I've mentioned before that I don't really consider myself a 'runner', and while I lurk here (actually, I lurked on the 2013 thread) I haven't posted much, but I think it's time I commit to improving my running capabilities.  On M/W/F early mornings I do a group fitness class at the local gym.  On T/TH I've been doing my version of interval training on the treadmill.  I walk a quarter or half mile warm up (else I get shin splints) then run a quarter, walk a quarter, run a quarter until I hit 3 or 4 miles.  Walking speed is a comfortable 3.5-3.6mph, running is between 5.8 and 6.3 depending on the song and my stride.  Over time I'll bump it up to walking a quarter, running a half, walking a quarter, running a half and move up from there.  I also pledge to get in a treadmill workout on Saturday or Sunday too.   There......I did it, now I can't back down Shocked!

Sweetandspecial, that's a great program!  I consider you a runner for sure.  In case you haven't seen it, here's a great article about including walking with running just perpetually, not as in any way lesser:

Oncearunner... "Unfortunately we are not passholders, we live too far away to make it worth it"

My goodness, I must be loony! I live in YYZ 1057 miles from MCO and twice that from LAX and I have annual pass to both! It's worth it for the park admissions while I'm going to 2-3 runs per year, plus I can use in spare time on business trips and enjoy the discounts. I think there is a small discount on the run registration also, except the January weekend.

So, for the calendar, I registered today for the "Dumbo Double Dare". That is the Disneyland 10K on Aug 30 and the Disneyland Half on Aug 31. (-:3

OK, I did it! I started a new thread, Running through chemotherapy --
for those looking for support, camaraderie, advice and encouragement to
keep active through some brutal treatments.

Share your experiences so people don't have to feel alone in their efforts!

(Thanks, Runfree, for cluing me in that the party had moved to a new page!)

goldlining - if I had the opportunity to come close to break even with an annual pass I would so get one. I don't have the opportunity to make it worth while. Sadly the only travel I do for work is within Canada and that is once in a blue moon :(  whoo hoo on getting in to the Dumbo Double Dare!

Sweetandspecial - I would consider you a runner too. Next time you watch a marathon or half marathon, look at the elite runners and you will see that they walk too. Some will walk a little bit while they drink their water and take their gels. There is nothing wrong with alternating walking and running :)

If we're not talking as elite competitors, but as people who walk for physical and mental health and recovery, the thing I equate to "running" is not the gait, but rather my state of consciousness of how far it was, how fast I went, how long I kept it up, whether I did the distance or pace I hoped, how I felt, whether I defeated the whiny voice that wanted to stop, how quick I recovered. It's also setting some targets for next time, getting better, feeling better, and missing it when you can't get out. I have those feelings when I walk on the treadmill, or I'm walking part of a race, not just when I am able to run. Being a runner is when I identify with what other people who run or walk say about an experience, and I try something they said helped them (I downsized my shoe weight based on what I read here, and it's been great!) or browsing at running expos or reading Runner's World magazine and wondering if product X or technique Y would help me. Run or walk, there is always someone faster. If I watch a marathon on TV or at the finish line as a spectator, I'm in awe of how fast those people move and wish that I could feel what that feels like, even just for one block. But even though 10,000 people beat me at the WDWHalf, I beat another 10,000 people. We are all on a continuum. Everyone has to go their own pace. The medals I earned from mostly walking are just as big and shiny as the ones I got from running more and, in every event longer than 5K, I walked some of it. Only by the finish time engraved on the back of the medal do you know which were more walking and which were more running.

Goldlining - that is a truly wonderful perspective.  Thanks for sharing!  I've only been consistent with this 'interval' stuff on the treadmill since the first of the year so can't expect major changes yet.  I've lost about 5 pounds, which isn't much, but I AM noticing the slightest bit of toning in my upper thighs (the old 'saddlebag' area) so I know it's working!

Glad you could open it this time, sweetandspecial!  That article was really important to me when I got back to running--my high school sport from almost 30 years ago--in 2010.  You have lost 5 lbs. in three weeks???  That's fantastic!

Today is the anniversary of my diagnosis, and to celebrate (if that's the right word), I've just completed my charity registration for the Covered Bridges Half Marathon on June 1.  Lovestorun, can you add that to the list?  I'm running for David's House, which provides a home for families whose kids are being treated at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, where I was diagnosed and had my surgery.  I've committed to raising $500, which is kind of daunting in my rural community.  If you want to donate, PM me and I'll give you my specs!

Lillaura and VMC!  Good for you! You can do it!  We each just do the best we can, running or walking, or a little of both, depending on what part of treatment we are dealing with or recovering from!

    Hiya ladies -

I'm wondering if anyone else is sharing my pain in regards to getting to the running fitness you used to know? I have been a runner forever (since I was 10 years old) and did an Ironman 11 months before I was diagnosed... so at one point, was pretty fit.

I am having an incredibly difficult time losing the chemo weight. (Trust me, I have tried almost everything, and I spent the first 33 years of my life NOT overweight... so I'm at a loss.)

I have edema in my legs - the lower part. Like, to the point where if you push on my shin, it leaves a gnarly indention for 5-10 minutes. I have asked every doctor I see about this and all of them are totally confused by it. Does anyone else have this issue? It's totally new to me and I'm missing my ankles! But mostly, my legs feel SO heavy when I try to run.

So I also seem to be developing shin splints and (per my oncologist) stress fractures. (He said not to worry, to keep running - they will go away. Love that man.)

I am training for an ultra-marathon in Nepal that's in 5 weeks. Long runs on trails don't aggravate it my lower legs much, but a 6 mile run on the street KILLS me.

I do wear compression socks much of the time which I think helps with recovery (shin splints) but doesn't do much for the edema.

Because I've been a runner for so long and never really had injuries, I'm thinking at least part of this is related to treatment and would love to know if there's anyone out there who has any advice or thoughts?

    Thaaaank you!

Runfree: Thanks for the article. I was one of those who snickered at the walk-run concept but at this point it seems like my best hope.

Stephie: I wish I had some advice to share. Knock wood, I have not experienced edema. I was also quite fit before my diagnosis and feel like a shadow of my former self, but I'm still in treatment (three more weeks of radiation). I think we have to be forgiving and patient and recalibrate our expectations. Many of these treatments have lingering effects, not to mention the hormone therapies we're on. I think we have to base our goals and expectations on where we are now, not where we used to be. That said, I really hope you find someone who can help with the swelling and discomfort. Best of luck.

Alaskamama - Thank you, you're right. Recalibrating my expectations has been the hardest and most important challenge in this journey. Cognitively/logically, I can totally tell myself not to measure my future achievements against the pre-cancer version of me... but apparently that's easier said than done. :-)

Only 3 more weeks! Congrats on being almost done!!!

I didn't have radiation or chemo but the DIEP is a very long procedure, and it took no less than 18 months to get my heart rate-to-pace ratio under control. It added like a minute per km to my pace. No one could explain why anaesthesia would do that, but there isn't a doubt in my mind that something was still getting worked out. It was not conditioning - I started running from a standing stop about 18 months before diagnosis and was in much better condition faster than the same amount of running post DIEP.

Every day is a new discovery - My thinking is that there will be times for faster runs and this is a time when just running is a win.

    hi all,

I was a runner before BC, and I am now getting back to it again. I have a question for you. I had a double mastectomy with implant reconstruction, and have not found any athletic bras that feel comfortable for running.  Have you found any that you like?

Thank you very much for any leads, and I am very excited to be joining this thread.

    Welcome NYC

:-) Running bras are my fixation!

I went from 2xDD, to 1xDD + 1xflat, to 2xsort-of-C. I may yet change size as I have a DIEP revision coming in a couple of months.

I like, no love, the Shock Absorber Ultimate Run Bra B5044 or S5044. Comes in various colourways including some limited edition. Photos on their site http://www.shockabsorber.co.uk/en/products/ultima...

The upper clasp at the back looks complicated but I never need to undo that. I just put my head through and wiggle in, and fasten the back hooks.

I discovered it in UK as it was allegedly the most popular running bra there, and I grabbed one at the London Marathon Expo (I wasn't running, just there at the same time). It is just fantastic. I had one really good Brooks bra that was discontinued, then I used to be a fan of a Lululemon bra that was discontinued and the others just didn't do anything about jiggle.

The Shock Absorber has come to Canada now, so I can just walk into a running store and buy it at home. The design effectively contains the jiggle by strategic use of nonstretch, not by crushing and making a uniboob. Also it comes in such a wide range of sizes that just about everyone can find a fit. Some perceive it as pricey but I know I buy one and I won't have to throw it out and spend more trying to find something better.

Edited to add, I find the fit pretty true to size also, for those who have to take a stab at mail order.

In case this sounds suspiciously enthusiastic, I have no relationship of any kind with the company other than periodically saying to them "shut up and take my money".

Looking forward to your run reports!
