I just found out today due to the chemo treatment I'm on I will need shots to raise my white blood count. I was just wondering how these work?

    Hi Nenny02,

On the main Breastcancer.org site, you can read about how Low White Blood Cell Count happens, how it's managed, and important things to consider when your immunity is compromised. The medicines your doctor may give you to boost your white blood count could be Neulasta or Neupogen, which you can read about via the links on how they are given and side effects to expect.

    We hope this helps!

Neulasta is not unusual with some Chemos and for some people (there are other shots too but I did Neulasta.)   White blood cells are what fight infection and chemo attacks so many cells in the body - not just cancer cells.  Neulasta 'encourages' the bones to make WBC.  I did Neulasta while on my 4 DD A/C but not on my 12 Taxol.  In somewhat other words - to try to keep your immune system 'up'.

Neulasta often causes bone pain and Claritin before and after is supposed to help.  There will be others who post who had the pain and how they handled it - I didn't have pain but a different very mild SE.
