    Goldlining, you did so great!  I'm in awe.  I would LOVE to have done that.  Hope you're not too sore tomorrow and hope your guts are OK now.  Way to go!!!

    Yea, yea, yea!  Today I ran with my dog for the first time since my BMX.  I've done many solo runs but I did not know if I could manage yet with her along.  We did a 5 mile run and 3 mile walk.  I'm glad to have my friend outside with me again!

    Well, I went out for my first walk today post surgery, and decided to try a little run.  I wasn't expecting it to be great, but honestly I wasn't expecting the TE to be that uncomfortable.  A total of 2.25 miles, but I only did a VERY slow jog for about 3 blocks.  I'm still in a lot of discomfort at night and knew if I did more I would pay for it later.

    Does this get better????

    corpor - you're only just a little over a month out from BMX/TE placement.  My PS said absolutely no running for at least 6 weeks.  Give it some time and you'll probably feel more comfortable.  At a month out from surgery I was still quite miserable.

    I think the when to start running date is also a PS preference and based on individual differences.  I often heard that 6 weeks was optimal but 4 weeks post BMX and my PS gave me the go-ahead.  I ran 12 miles in 2 days.  I have also found that it is easier after I started getting fills.  Things stay in place.  For a few days after a fill it is uncomfortable and I don't run.  It's better by the end of the week.  I start chemo this week and I really hope I will be able to continue to run.

    Hi girls....I just started running ...I'm doing the C25k program and I'm in the 6 weeks part of it.  actually ran/walked my very first 5k yesterday.   If you knew me, you would know how big of a step this was.  I find that I look forward to the time for running. I'm 61 and need to lose 20 pounds and hoping along with the mental benefits, I will reap some weight loss also. 

    This is a good thread ...just wanted to introduce myself as a newbie and look forward to hearing about your training and runs.

    Obxflygirl - I bet most here remember the first 5k as it is a milestone that once seemed unachievable.  Congratulations.

    Obxflygirl1 -  I was a trackster in high school but I was all about sprints and hurdles, did not care for distance running AT ALL, and I do mean AT ALL!  Gained an average of 3 pounds a year for 25 years post high school and woke up one day at 193 pounds!  Joined weight watchers and lost 53 pounds in a little over 5 months and ran my first ever 5K that summer (2006).  I understand in my own way what an achievement this is for you - great job!!  I've now gained back a bunch of that weight (not all but a large majority) and have recently recommitted to weight watchers and hope to run in our local summer festival 5k in July once again.

    thanks girls!  I really look forward to hearing about how everyone got to a place where you can run 10K's and higher....  How many times a week do you normally work out?

    I did a half in mid November, then ran 2k when I bought a new pair of shoes late November, then nothing until Christmas, realized I had the WDW weekend coming so did 40-minute treadmill sessions (maybe 30-35 minutes running with walk breaks) maybe four times, and then hauled off and did a 10K and a half back to back this weekend. I don't want to say training is overrated, but probably half my miles have bling at the end. If I ever trained, I wonder what would happen. 

    A half is just a brisk walk for 3 hours. When I travel, I literally walk for six hours around cities, partly to see stuff and partly because I am lost half the time. Endurance is nothing for me. However, speed is another matter but there's enough medals for everyone.

    For me, the worst part of a run is the first 5K. I hate it. The endorphins have not kicked in, and I am thinking about my tights bunching or my socks falling down or my glasses being smudged. At about 6K, it starts feeling good. But I do get bored if there isn't any scenery, so I don't really enjoy the run around the neighbourhood thing. I get more runs in when I travel or of course at events, where I can people-watch the other runners. 

    My philosophy has always been that I can alway walk the back half, so if I can run 50% of the distance, I would let myself go for it. When I could run a whole 5K, I signed up for a 10K. When I could run the whole 10K, I signed up for the half. I will sign up for a marathon the day I run a whole half. I was up to about 11 miles of it before I fell down the mastectomy rabbit hole, and am just crawling back out now.

    So sorry I have been MIA so long- have been lurking and not posting (my bad)

    Just back from the Dopey Challenge at Disney World which was a 5k, 10K, half marathon then a full marathon- 48.6 miles in four days!

    It was so hard and don't think I am in any rush to do this again!

    So glad to hear from you gg!

    I was stiff and tired on Sunday after just the 10K and Half Fri/Sat. I was so happy that I was NOT running Sunday! I couldn't have run to the bus stop! I did not even go to the parks. I took my car and went shopping!

    But here I am, Tuesday, and just very minor stiffness in my shins as I step (dorsiflexion) and that's just a day's worth of healing left. 

    Hope you are feeling better in a day or two, and enjoying your great bling and all your new, sleek tech shirts!

    Obxflygirl - It builds.  First you do 5 miles, then six, then seven, and one day 10 and before you know it you're hitting the half marathons and suddenly the 5ks seem like nothing.  And then everyone tells you to go for the full 26.2 and you remind them that the first guy who did it dropped dead.  

    I had my first TC infusion yesterday.  Oh goodie.  I took my dog for a 6 mile run today.  I wanted to get it in now.  It feels like the quiet before the storm.  The nurse wants me to go to a special exercise program for chemo patients.  I told her I run half marathons, lift weights, etc.  I do NOT want to wind up in some remedial gym class.

    Warrior Woman, congratulations on getting your first TC infusion done!  I think taking your dog on a 6-mile run is a great way to start chemo.

    Thank you, RunFree!  It feels like I'm giving chemo the big middle finger but I have a bad feeling the pay backs are coming soon.  I resolve to get out and do something active everyday even if I have to crawl.

    I confirmed I was recovered with a run Friday afternoon, 6K out and back from my hotel, good pace. However, a day after, I have a chest cold or bronchitis. I'd had a little irritation in my lungs on the race weekend starting with the 10K, but I kept it in check. After running on Friday, I had the same and I think the irritation made me susceptible to somebody's bug at the airport or wherever. Just in time to go back to work tomorrow! So, today's treadmill run is off and I'll watch football from bed.

    5 days out from my first TC infusion and I actually feel pretty good today...better than the last few. I ran 5.5 miles with my best friend.

    You are awesome, Warrior Woman!  Glad you're feeling so strong.  Goldlining, that's a huge bummer about your chest woes.  I hope you can just rest up and recover so you can get back on the road.

    Hello fellow BC Runners! I ran yesterday  for the first time since chemo started in September! This is my friend (with hair) that I ran Grandma's Marathon with in June -- just after my diagnosis!  We ran about 40 minutes! My chest hurt for some reason, and it lasted for a few hours, but luckily the pain went away!  It felt so good to be running again!

    Well, it was a SLOW 2.25 miles, but I thoroughly enjoyed my first run since October!  Because of several biopsies done at different times, I was too sore to even consider running before my surgery, and then the TE's have been challenging since my surgery.  Running on the treadmill seemed to help, I think it may have absorbed some of the impact so I wasn't as uncomfortable.  I can't wait to go to the gym again tomorrow.  Hooray!!!!!

    Runningfrom - you made my day.  Thank you for sharing.  Congrats corpor.

    It looks like we still don't have someone who wants to take charge of a 2014 thread.  I'm willing to create a new one (unless I can simply rename this one but I'm not sure if it will let me), as long as it's copacetic that I check the list about once a week (but not necessarily more frequently) for new race /event info.  Thoughts?

    lovestorun, that would be so generous of you! I think weekly housekeeping of the top post is fine!

    When the new one exists, one last "forwarding address" message is needed here. Last year I missed the switch! :-o

    So, my running is out of action now, since I seem to have the flu. I was stuck in my office this afternoon because I couldn't grip the doorknob. I could only start the microwave (for chicken soup) with two hands. I also have the leftover asthma (X-ray ruled out pneumonia) from the Disney runs and sinusitis which seems separate from both of those. I am a mess! 

    Please indulge me with your running reports, folks!

    I just hope I can get back in the running game. I am going to try and start back in Feb. I have been walking, but without a regular schedule. I really need to commit despite my crazy work hours.

    I hate the winter and I am feeling the darkness weighing in on me at times. SADD is raging it's ugly head and so are the extremely low temps

    Gold-take good care and hope you feel better soon. 

    I too look forward to running reports to get me back at it and motivated to keep up.
