First Doctor Appointment Today

I got that phone call last week saying that I had breast cancer. I have been living a nightmare for the past few days, now today seeing the doctor and finding out the specifics. I sit here with a sick feeling in my stomach. This will be the hardest day of my life.

    Hello shelbell, and welcome to Breastcancer.org, although we're sorry that you've had to be here. This period right after being diagnosed is so difficult, we understand, and we hope you'll find lots of support and personal experiences of others right here in the discussion boards.

    Also, there is a section designed for those who are newly diagnosed that you my find interesting. It is the Breast Cancer 101 section of the main Breastcancer.org site. We hope you find it helpful.

    (((Hugs))) Shellbell.   Is anyone going with you ?   Sometimes it helps to have someone there - just to be there for you and perhaps serve as a second "ear" for what you are being told.   You know you have the women here to suuport, listen and be there for you as well. 

    The day seems daunting but you will have answers and solutions by the time its done (the day).  Its a lot to handle and we will be here waiting for you should you need us!

    it is so hard and overwhelming. I was so scared. But there is life after cancer which is often treated like a chronic disease. 

    Do bring someone with you to your appointment to take notes. I had a list of questions so I wouldn't forget. . A lot of my first appointment was a blur as I was still in shock. There is also a lot of technical information too. 

    You will get lots of support and information here.

    My doctor gave me a prescription for anxiety meds and ambien at my first appointment.   I didn't take them much, but was glad I had them because it was all so overwhelming.  It gets easier once you meet with your surgeon but ask your doctor for help if you need it.  They can also connect you with local support.

    shellbell - sorry you got THE call. Obviously all of us know exactly what that feels like. Some of us were in shock while others like me were really braced for the call but already resigned to the DX. My radiologist pretty much told me pre-biopsy things didn't look good for the home team. Her bedside manner left a lot to be desired but that's another story for another day. Anyway, do take someone with you. My husband went with me and I am so glad he did for a myriad of reasons. He is an engineer and so meticulous. Plus you are kind of in a fog during the early process and certainly not thinking of all the questions you should be asking and that person will be. The doctors will inundate you with information and arm you with all kinds of pamphlets and advice. Take a deep breath and take the time to make your own decision. This forum is a lifesaver and my lifeline. While no one is attempting to dispense medical advice, and shouldn't, they can certainly relay what their particular situation was like and that is helpful. Keep in mind not everyone is the same nor are their circumstances so don't assume because it happen to us it will happen to you too. This is probably the worst part of your experience because there are so many things you just don't know yet. Once you do it will ease your mind a bit. Also keep in mind BC is not the death sentence it used to be. Treatments have come a long way. Do come back if you need help or just to vent. Good luck and keep the faith. Diane
