Hi Friends,
Can't believe it's already the end of the year. 2013 was a sucky year for so many of us. Really hoping for an upswing in 2014. I don't usually make resolutions ... but I actually have three for this year. Keeping it simple though ... lose 5 pounds, find another client and try to be the kindest person I can be.
Tim will be home late this afternoon, then he leaves again first thing in the morning. I think he's heading back up towards Sunnyflowers part of the country.
Jackie ... WOW! I am so glad you got your dogs home safe and sound. That is really scary. A couple of times since we've lived here, the big gate has been left open and I panic that the dogs got out. My Maggie will run for hours, but thankfully Tank will come back home. Glad it's only happened twice ... can't take the stress of worrying they might get run over or lost in the woods.
Sending out love, hope and grace to all my friends here.

Kam ... we were writing at the same time. It amazes me that there has not been that much progress in the last 40 years.
hugs and Happy New Year to you,
Bren
-
Jackie - so glad for you all are well. Bill sounds like a real hero. Your DH too.
I echo what Alexandria and Pip wish for 2014.
Also wanna add that Enjoyful gets on the Best Trial in the world!
Bren - keep Mr. Tim HOME. Snow is already starting, and temps will be well below 0 for a few days. I think the weather people make their predictions by sticking warm spoons into Marshmallow Fluff ( NOT creme! This is New England!) and see how many semi sweet mini chocolate bits stick, to determine how much snow we'll get. Current "predictions" are 6" to 12" - I mean, REALLY, how is that different from just guessing?
Don't know how folks in upper Midwest do it - but below 0 and windy is just tooooo cold to be outside.
Giving thanks for wonderful Christmas prezzies, new art supplies, and more books.
Happy New Year....red to purple to BLUE for 2014.
-
Sunnyflowers ... it's cold and sunny here today. And the wind is really blowing ... going to be one of those "bundle up" days when I walk the dogs.
hugs,
Bren
PS .. Mr. Tim can't stay home ... if the wheels aren't turning, there's no income. I just hope he doesn't get stuck up north somewhere.
-
Sun - Just got back from Vermont last night, so we missed the big temperature dip. Stay warm and dry- the predictions look bad for the next week.
I include a wish for No more angels and a REAL cure in my New Year's thoughts..
-
Bren - just hoping he doesn't have to drive thru this area until AFTER Friday - should be a bit 'settled' by then. No surprise to get snow around here, but not with these temps. Brrrr....still, in its own way, it's lovely.
-
Sunnyflowers ... Tim is leaving here (Martinsville) tomorrow morning. It's a two day drive that far north, so maybe he won't get stuck. Not sure how far he'll get tomorrow. It will probably be Thursday when he gets to his destination.
He did call and tell me that the prediction was for about a foot of snow up there! Yikes. Stay safe and warm!
Sandy ... Looking for the "like" button. No more angels and it's time for a cure.
hugs,
Bren

RL thanks for the wonderful article.
Jackie so glad your doggies and hubby are all safe and sound.
Agree with all the above regarding the house and also hope the Dems retain the Senate.
My New Years resolution is to attempt to ellicit a smile whenever I meet a grouch. It isn't 2014 quite yet, but I managed yo get a smile from the drivers license lady today as I applied for my enhanced license.
Happy New Years!!!!"

GG that is a great idea. Saw something interesting here and have to investigate it further but it should be turning up in more than one place.
Gallup: Obama, Hillary Are
Most AdmiredAmericans named President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary
Clinton as the world's most admired living man and woman in 2013, according to a
Gallup poll released on Monday.Obama topped the annual list for the sixth consecutive year, a typical
ranking for a sitting U.S. president, the polling organization said.Clinton earned the top spot among most admired women for the 12th consecutive
year and 18th time overall, more than any other woman in the poll's history. Not surprised at all about these two people. With being ranked 18 times over-all, 2016 would be a great time for Hillary to run again for President. What a wonderful first that could be right next to the wonderful first of our first black President. The intolerance shown him is totally disgraceful, but he gives nary a sign that he is bothered showing that resilience, conviction and grace is very much a part of him.

Blue - don't hold your breath for good photos - he is really hard to get a shot of. BTW - your grandbabies are totally gorgeous.
Just sitting around waiting until we leave for the airport - bubby gone for a nap, so we got kisses before he went down. Can't believe I have to go to work tomorrow - poop - I am SO tired even though we had an early night - kept waking up to go to the bathroom. Really looking forward to our own bed and picking Poppy up tomorrow after work.

Illinois lady, i just totally love that rose in the little photo there, that peachy apricot is just devine infact i have just copied it off and going to save it my pictures, i love that colour, is it one of your roses, it is gorgeous.

midnight? -
midnight....I'm pleased that you like it. I wish it were growing somewhere in my yard, but I found the picture on the internet. I am very fond of flowers and my mother loved roses and so I end up using them in the avatar picture more to honor her than anything else. Have a lovely day.

A bit late but Happy New year and hope it is good to everyone. I lost this thread and couldn't find it when it disappeared from my favourites.
Late here on New Years day so time for sleep after hearing the news.DH is already zizzing away and i have had to shake him a couple of times to quieten down.
We have had a lovely Christmas though much quieter without small children around to enliven things.
Politically things are quiet here at present because everyone is on holiday (it's summer here)so people are more interested in the weather than in social issues.
Old cat has just arrived and is not pleased I have the notebook here.Jackie great story about your dogs looking out for each other.
Goodnight all and keep warm - DD says it will be -14c down to -21c on Thursday.that is cold.
Big hugs
-
Aly - I'm jealous - I want to move home - it's heading for 39C on Saturday here - we just escaped the Adelaide heat to come home to worse.
-
Suzie, he's just adorable!
HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS!

Let there be cures!
-
Happy New Year, everyone!
I know we've all talked about a cure for BC (and for every other type of cancer too). But, what actually do we mean by a "cure"? Is a "cure" a promise that cancer will never return? Or could it be a vaccine that we give newborns to ensure that they never get cancer?
Surgery provides a type of cure for several cancers, BC included. Radiation does too, and so does chemo. But there's no guarantee that what caused the cancer in the first place isn't still there, or at least potentially there, in our bodies.
A former "big shot" doc doing cancer research once told me several years ago that he could not ever envision a "cure" for cancer (as in the promise/assurance that it would never return) primarily because every body is different, and hence the behaviour of every set of cancer cells dividing and multiplying is also different and unique to its host. In order for a "cure" to occur, the therapy would have to be specifically designed for each individual patient. He didn't think that would ever be possible.
But it actually IS possible, scientists are working on it, and I think we'll see it really happening within the next 5 years.
-
c4c - I hope you are right and that a cure down the road will keep the next generations from having to deal with this.
Alyson - I'm guessing the cold weather you are mentioning is in Ontario, not New Zealand. It is remarkable to me that people on this thread are experiencing such wildly different weather situations.
-
Picture from space of Europe celebrating New Year, wow!

-
c4c - By cure, I mean cure. I mean, that I hope that science will find a way to eradicate cancerous cells once they develop in our bodies. Preventing cancerous cells from developing is another goal.
-
Hi Friends,
I had a lovely day. Drove up to my sis' and had homemade tacos for lunch. It was fun to see her and my BIL.
Suzie ... your baby boy is adorable!
hugs,
Bren

Thankyou girls - but he didn't like his Nana - he likes me on Skype but in person he wasn't so sure. I did get one or two cuddles however.

Hi all and Happy new year! Just returned last night from a California trip with my grandson. Unfortunately I brought a cold back with me. We had beautiful weather and had a day at Disneyland, knotts berry farm and Hollywood. We were visiting my son, Thomas's dad, who ended up coming back to MD with us. He had been trying to find work out there but was only getting temp jobs. A friend here got a job lined up for him in bel air at a restaurant that is opening in. 3 weeks. Sure hope it works out for him. DH would like to retire someday and that means our adult kids need to be "on their own." Our daughter got an engagement ring for Christmas and is talking about a May wedding. She has her work cut out for her. I'm glad she's old enough to do this on her own. I don't think I have the energy to plan a wedding!! Scheduled for chemo tomorrow but depends on blood counts which were too low last time. Good to be home. Sorry for all of you experiencing ice storms. Not too bad in Maryland and of course, California was lovely! Keeping fingers and toes crossed for E.

I think that what I want is a way to PREVENT cancer. The cat is already out of the bag when we get breast cancer. But I have 2 Daughters, 2 granddaughters, extending it to sisters, I have 3 and they have 3 daughters among them, my 2 sisters in law have 3 daughters among them. That is a lot of women. I want a cure so that the women (and I know men get bc) who extend forth from me and you don't have to face the crap that we have to face in treating a disease that is likely preventable. If only it were so easy. I send forth a wish that we will continue to support in word, deed, and humour, the people who come to these forums with one thing in common, a disease that one day should be as rare as polio is in the developed world.
