This woman saved my life 7 1/2 years ago. Lo & behold, I was watching the news and a feature came on starring the renowned Dr Nathalie Johnson. The moment I saw her, I thought "her hair looks suspiciously short" - and the next thing I know they're talking about her bilateral mastectomy & Herceptin treatments. She's worried that any resulting neuropathy could compromise her ability as a surgeon - understandably so!

It served as a painful reminder that the beast spares no one...

Ugh! I am sorry. She is also not the first breast surgeon I have come across who opted for bilateral.

my family doctor was diagnosed about 4mos after me and she also opted for a bilat msx (after chastising me for the same decision just a few months prior)

Dr. Rachel Brem out of GWU found her own BC while testing new scanning techniques!  I've seen her speak several times and her story amazes me.  I only wish I had found her BEFORE my dx, as I was the classic large, dense breast patient. Multicentric disease never picked up on yearly mammos.  She is a huge advocate that if you hear the words DENSE to push for further testing such as an MRI or who knows what they have now.  She was working on breast gamma imaging???? whatever that is, but the key for people like me is that mammos are ineffective.  Now I would NEVER tell any woman not to get one done.  It's all we have for now (that insurance covers) and if it saves any lives then it's a good thing I suppose.

    Take care,

    Sharon

Yup, I had dense breasts too - but back then we didn't even have digital, so mine was missed on the mammos (probably for years). When they got in the disease had exploded into microscopic bits - they couldn't even get a sample of the tumor. Wish I knew then what I know now about dense tissue - I always thought it meant they were perky and firm :)

I too had dense breasts and was uneducated regarding the risk factors.  Mammograms missed my bc - I am still so angry about it.

Sugarplum - interesting about your BS.  I've been thinking about what you said regarding how she saved your life - it made me have overwhelming feelings of gratitude for my BS - I was already thankful for her but you stating that hit a deep nerve in me today.

I know this is an old thread, but my ob/gyn who found my lump (invisible on mammograms) is about 3 yrs ahead of me on the BC journey, also opted for a bmx - which i didnt know at the time of my own decision. Although she never stated this, I'm certain her own experience is what pushed her to insist I see a BS after a negative mammogram but with a palpable lump.

My radiologist had BC Lojo. In fact she spoke to our BC group last night at the Church. She is such an inspiration and a help to us. We pepper her with questions. I never knew she went to our church until recently. It helps to have someone like her who knows what we are going through up close and personal. One of the ladies in our group is dying; we are all saddened and reeling knowing one of our OWN is one of those statistics. A lot of factors contributed to her condition; her DX was for all practical purposes doomed from the onset. Still very painful. We all know none of us have any guarantees. Diane
