Maybe it is more the NRA that is barbaric because they love their lobby and power enough to dispense with every ounce of common sense they have ever had. Truly sad when guns are so much more important then innocent children and hard-working caring adults.

Gee, I lived in the U.S. for over 25 years and never had a gun pulled on me - back here in Burlington two years ago November I had a gun pulled on me at the convenience store in my building - go figure!!!
-
Actually, never saw a gun in public, except on police officers, never was the victim of a violent crime or the witness to a violent crime. Really, it is not as dangerous here as news media makes it out. BTW, Blue, Vermont has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation, so you can feel safe coming there.

Interesting but known.

We got a call yesterday morning. Not the good kind of call. Our nephew was killed in a car accident. He was 29, same age as my oldest son. It brings back that dark place we were in when we lost our daughter. It makes you count the blessings you do have though.
Kay, you probably heard about it. It was in Whitby.
-
Pip, I am SO sorry to hear that. Please accept my condolences.
When bad things -- accidents, random shootings and so on -- happen, we think of all the "ifs", as in "If he hadn't been driving on the road" or "If my child had stayed home from school that day". Life IS a series of "ifs" and they are largely out of our control. Who knows that better than us BC patients, I wonder.
All we can do, really, is to try to make the outcomes better when those "ifs" are about to happen. Hence we have car seatbelts, speed limits etc. But the NRA-types don't seem to want any safety precautions when it comes to gun access. And the weaselly congress hasn't the guts or the integrity to legislate for the majority, rather than just the loudest and wealthiest of their corporate constituents.

Oh Pip - so sorry to hear such sad news. It's always devastating and perhaps even more so for the time of year. My thoughts are with you.
-
Oh, PiP, I am so sorry. What a terrible, terrible thing to have happen! Sending you love and hugs and peace.
Guns. As the wife of a career law-enforcement officer, I have seen plenty. Have never (knock on pressed sawdust and glue product) been the victim of a gun crime. Virginia is an open-carry state, so I have had the opportunity to see plenty of people who look like they shouldn't even think about a gun, let alone carry one in public. If we see one, we leave immediately. Too many crazies out there who confuse their penises with their guns.

Good Morning Gals,
PIP ... I am so very sorry to hear about your nephew. I'm sure it brings up tough memories of what you went through with your daughter. My thoughts and heart are with you.
Kay ... I got a kick out of Suzie's post. I live in rural Virginia and the gun laws in my county are different than those in the city. Here you can fire your weapons off your back porch as long as you are 100 yards from your neighbor. I hear lots of gunshots in the fields and woods from all the hunters. Hearing it in my neighbors front driveway really did scare me, especially with all the screaming going on. When we first moved here, I was quite alarmed by all the shooting and called the Sheriff's office to see if it was legal. Sure enough ... out here in the country you can just shoot away! So I always wear a fluorescent orange jacket when I walk my dogs!
Libby ... Guns per se do not bother me. I have two and Tim has one. I didn't know we were in an open-carry state. Yeeehaw! Does that mean I can carry my pistol in my purse and go anywhere I want?
Again, PIP I am terribly sorry for your loss.
hugs,
Bren

Pip - how terrible, and all that it brings to the surface for you, what pain. Hope you are able to find some comfort during these very, very difficult days to come. I don't think it's possible to even imagine, unless, like so many of us, we've been the ones to get that phone call. Life stops. At least it did when I got one, and remember being so surprised, honestly, that life seemed to be going on for everyone around me. It was 47 years ago, and I can still feel what it felt like when I answered the phone. My oldest friend's daughter died suddenly last January, unexpected, at about the same age as your nephew, when my friend called me, I remember hearing the words, and still not being able to believe it could be really happening.
Sometimes I wonder where we find the strength to experience this. Pip, joining all in sending you love and prayers.
-
Bren, no. That would be concealed-carry, for which you must have a permit. You can, however, wear it openly in a holster on your belt. I would NOT recommend it. Nor would I recommend that Tim carry his in his truck, since firearms and transport of firearms regulations vary from state to state and if he is stopped, he could face some unpleasant consquences.
-
Libby ... thanks for the information! I didn't really want to pack heat down here ... just kidding! Although I did carry my guns with me when I lived in Utah. I lived so far off the beaten path, I felt better with a little protection.
Tim absolutely will NOT carry any sort of weapon in his truck. He is fanatical about following the rules for truck drivers. Geez ... he wouldn't even take the pain meds prescribed for him just in case he had a random drug check.
Thinking of PiP's nephew and Sunnyflower's friend ... there is just no way to ever be prepared for that phone call. I remember when the call came to me about my dad ... it took me about 10 seconds to catch on ... and we knew his time was short.
hugs,
Bren

Thank you everyone.

Oh Pip, I am so sorry for your family's loss. Sudden death is always tragic. When the person is young it is the loss of so much promise.
-
My use of that word was a bit tongue in cheek.
Pip - that is such sad news - so sorry for your loss.
-
Pip - what terrible news - so sorry for the loss of your nephew - my thoughts are with you and your family.
-
Pip, I too just got here to read your news. I'm so sorry.......and do think this happy, rather cheerful time of year is especially hard when it must be used as well to mourn the loss of a loved one. Much sympathy and prayers for all who are a part of this situation.

Ray is off this week so he had me gallivanting all over the place today. Just got back.
(((((((((Pip))))))))) There are no words.
Alexandria, the only thing that will keep me away is my health. I'll wear a bullet-proof vest! hehehehehehe!
Sandy, I often forget to lock my door at night. It's now Ray's job to lock up. My neighbourhood is pretty safe.
-
Pip, my condolences. It is always hard to lose family, but especially such a young person.
-
Pip, I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Again, thank you everyone.

PIP - I am so sorry for your loss. What a terrible tragedy, especially at this time of year.

As for the Duck Dynasty reality-TV star...does Bobby Jindal understand that the 1st Amendment does not apply to TV Reality stars being suspended by the commercial enterprise they represent? Consistency in his views would dictate that he also come out in defense of Martin Bashir. But consistency has never been a hallmark of the Tea Party's views...

Another reason to be SO thankful I don't have Cable TV. Or Dish, or anything but my rusty ole antenna

Bren - hope Mr. Tim is safely back home from ME, as the snow will be turning to rain ( in the 40's) then back to freezing = can anyone spell black ice. Scary stuff. Best reason to stay cozy at home & listen to Christmas music.
