Lynn13k and justafarmthroughit, welcome. Looking forward to learning and sharing with both of you

Natty, thanks for posting the link on iodine testing. good to know.

Falleaves, I didn't know that about the probiotic and vita d. Thanks for posting. going to have to remember that. also, I quit the dairy after diagnosis. I was making myself a big chocolate milk every night before that.

Momine you are lucky to live amidst all those beautiful olives. Gets costly keeping quality olive oil in the cupboards here. So many health benefits of olives don't you think? aside from any possible safety issues with it?

I wanted to ask if anyone is taking mushroom supplements or dietary?

For those who want customized bars, check out this site.  He appears to have a bunch of possibilities and you can choose what you want.  Click on the "Build a Bar" option at the top and choose your ingredients.

I still consume some dairy here and there BUT only raw dairy from local Amish farmers where I can see the cattle grazing in the fields.  It is only organic grassfed dairy from jersey cows.  Supposedly A2 raw milk is not harmful at all?  Dr. Wong told me to stay away from dairy except maybe some raw milk etc.... He said goat dairy is very good for us, alkaline.  I am still very very bad with my weekly Starbux latte...sigh

check this out ladies!!!! familiar herbs - supplements work - in combination..... 2 references to the study

    "

The research team tested ten known protective chemical nutrients found in foods like broccoli, grapes, apples, tofu, and turmeric root (a spice used in Indian curry) before settling upon six – Curcumin known as tumeric, Isoflavone from soybeans, Indo-3-Carbinol from cruciferous plants, C-phycocyanin from spirulina, Reservatrol from grapes, and Quercetin, a flavonoid present in fruits, vegetables, and tea. The researchers administered these six at bioavailable levels to both breast cancer and control cells. They tested the compounds individually and in combination. They found that the compounds were ineffective individually. When combined, though, the super cocktail suppressed breast cancer cell growth by more than 80%, inhibited migration and invasion, caused cell cycle arrest, and triggered the process leading to cell death resulting in the death of 100% of the breast cancer cells in the sample. The researchers observed no harmful effects on the control cells. Further analysis also identified several key genes, which could serve as markers to follow the progress of therapy."

Re: iodine - you can get some in depth info on breastcancerchoices about iodine, the iodine protocol, and the supplements that all play a role. I also have autoimmune thyroid disease with what used to be WAY out of range antibody markers (i.e., 1000+). There is discussion available about how autoimmune diseases and breast cancer can be connected, which one way or another led me to the breastcancerchoices site and got me started. I now take 125 MG of iodine, selenium, ATP co-factors, Vits C, D, E, fish oil, curcumin, quercetin, CoQ10, adrenal support, calcium, magnesium, DIM, milk thistle, grapeseed extract, melatonin, and NAC, plus a good multi, for whatever else I've missed. It's a pile, but it seems to work for me. I stay well while all around me get sick, my thyroid disease is GONE, and hopefully the BC is too...

Re: Stevia. I don't know much about it other than I know there are strong opinions on both sides about it. I stopped using artificial sweeteners about six months pre-BC diagnosis when I was seeing a naturopath to work on the autoimmune issues. That alone was life-changing. Literally all I did was stop drinking Diet Coke and lost 20 pounds. Exercise level didn't change, diet didn't change, just the Diet Coke. I think that was around the same time Stevia and other "natural" sugar substitutes were coming out, because I remember being so gun-shy about ANY sweetener that I wouldn't buy anything - and still don't.

Peacock, wow on the diet coke. I have read some stuff about that and it is quite weird how a diet drink can wreak so much havoc (it seems).

Peacock....Curious about NAC.  I basically take everything you take and have taken NAC in the past...but, I had read that NAC may work against ER+?

    Sunflowers -

    Re: iodine

I use kombu (dried sea weed) in all soups and stews, etc., basically anything with a soupy, watery base. I find there really is no taste to it and actually end up eating the strips of kombu when they are soft and delectable as well as the sauces or soups that it leeches into. I guess I trust the whole plant more than parts of it in a pill. I also eat Brazil nuts for the selenium.

For those interested in making their own bars, here is a link to a recipe that may help.  I like this site also because it has a lot of good recipes.:

Also, I think food can be considered alternative medicine.

I am looking for a venue in which to share information with women and other men whose spouses have been recently diagnosed or are otherwise at risk for breast cancer, about pre-diagnosis prevention options that I have discovered since the death of my own wife in 2007. I have good news and wish to share what I have learned amongst groups where it can have the greatest impact and benefit. Having discovered this site only today, I would like to learn more about the members who rely on and learn from the information shared here. My interests and experiences center on the topic of iodine supplementation and related information that was relatively unknown and unavailable when my wife passed in 2007. Through research and my own personal experience, I have come to believe that iodine, used correctly, could have a tremendous impact on the pre-diagnosis prevention and the pre- conventional treatment of, not only breast cancer, but many other health disorders. There are misconceptions about iodine that inhibit people from giving this serious consideration as a pre-conventional treatment option. I would like to stimulate discussion and increase awareness of this topic for the benefit of all who are interested and learn from others in the group who may be using Lugol's iodine already. Education and communication are the keys and my hope is that there will come a time when no surviving spouse will have to tell their children, that mom died from breast cancer, but an iodine deficiency caused it.

SpecialK, I saw that chicory was in those bars. I came across some info once before. Tried to find it but couldn't, but here's a website that indicates that one of the health benefits of chicory is that it is suppossed to be helpful for breast cancer. Anyway, you guys are making me hungry.

miffwine, so you just signed up today? thanks for telling us a little about yourself. Very sorry to hear of your wife. Are you here just for personal reasons or are you affiliated with anyone/organization or business? what is it that you would like to share?

Thanks for the welcome. I just finished reading a great book on nutrition and supplements; The Whole Food Guide for Breast Cancer Survivors. .. A Nutritional Approach to Preventing Recurrence. I thought I was a healthy eater but, I learned so much , especially about how to choose supplements wisely. I just dumped the ones I was taking and am waiting to see what the blood work my NP ordered says before I get a new plan.

My new NP tested for iodine but I don't have the results yet.

jojo, They are starting some pilot studies on NAC. I've read some controversial things about it too. Here is some research I gathered. According to preliminary research, seems it's most effective for triple negative breast cancer.

Forgot to post these studies on mushrooms earlier with the others. I love reishi mushroom, research shows that it has beneift w/ IBC.

Dietary white mushrooms have been reported to be of help with their aromatase action as well. Really great and important for us to know.

Apparently there is some correlation between thyroid issues and BC. It's pretty much unheard of for thyroid disease to resolve. Madpeacock, please elaborate on how you got those antibodies down, by PM if you think that appropriate. And let me say, good for you!

    Thanks!

My doc tested my iodine with a 24 hour urine test - said you can have OK levels in your blood, that the urine test is more accurate. I was low, so now I'm on prolamine.

I'm glad I found this thread, I love learning what other people are doing to prevent recurrence. I've worked with a nutritionist, and when I mentioned something about "wanting to prevent it from coming back" she said: the melatonin will do that. I take 20 mg. a day. I take lots of other stuff. Basically, whenever I read about something, I want to try it. And, I want to say that I did everything I could to fight this disease. The next thing on my list to try is apricot kernels, or Vit. B17 (laetrile). It is kind of fascinating how it works against cancer. There is cyanide in the kernels and selectively goes in and kills cancer cells, while normal cells can protect themselves from it.

Yes light, this is very personal. I've started Iodine for Life, whose goal is to place the information, instruction, and materials necessary for iodine supplementation into the hands of everyone who needs it. Iodine for Life creates kits that contain Lynne Farrow's book and the materials recommend for a safe, time tested, iodine supplementation protocol. The kits eliminate any confusion, reduce the need for time consuming experimentation, and ensure consistency. I have not yet applied for non-profit status, but any revenue derived from kits sales is used to create more kits and 5% of that revenue will be donated to community organizations to help spread the word. The business aspect of this is simply the delivery system that makes it all possible.

Jelson, those studies really support the idea that nutrition plays an important role in the fight against bc.
