good morning - heat wave here, it's 20. Light snow, ground covered, soon to get La Deluge of rain. Definitely a Shelter in Place few days
Listening to NPR, interesting reports from all the people in CA who are getting BETTER health care plans, after their old one's were cancelled. Much lower deductibles, more coverage, only slightly higher premiums. Expect more media will pick up on this. Of course, no barriers because of pre-existing conditions, many reporting switching to better plans, when they couldn't change before.
Isn't it interesting, how much easier it seems to create a "story" about bad news, than good news. -
-
C4C - thanks, I haven't read the NYTimes yet. I hope the MSM picks this up - so important to have a balanced picture. yes, the "roll out" was bad - a system toooooooooo complex for any programmers to even think of - ah, would that we had gone with a single payer, and not needing the labyrinth of connections needed for the hybrid that's being created. STILL - it's better than it was, and took only about 40 years to get to it.
I think it was Winston Churchill who said, paraphrasing, You can count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they've tried everything else. May google that, but that's the general idea ;-)
THINKING ABOUT ENJOYFUL - hope Sampson gets carrots on Thursday ;-) PLEASE BE WELL. -

Wow, what a dog! -
Had to look it up -- it's a Komondor, a Hungarian livestock-guarding dog. Amazing, isn't it?! -
Reporting two stories from California and the ACA:
My friend's sister, family of 4, was paying $1600 a month for health insurance due to her pre-existing condition of Lupus. They were pulling out of savings to pay this bill. She enrolled in the ACA last week and they qualify for a subsidy and will now be paying $250 a month for much better coverage! She did it all on line.
My gf is somewhat computer illiterate, so I helped her get a profile. We perused the two main plans for this geographic area, investigating the doctor's network and she chose a plan for $45 a month; $2250 catastrophic, $5 copay to see the physicians, deductible was either $0 or something very very low, just can't remember it. Her AGI is $15,000, so she has gone without health insurance all of her life and paid cash to see doctors and luckily, has been very very healthy, up til now. (She is very very frugile too.) Now she is faced with needing a hip replacement at 62. She cleans houses, dragging her leg, sometimes crawling on her hands and knees to get the job done. She now can have the surgery (March) and be functional for work. She is a trooper and the ACA will have made a huge difference in her life. By the way, once she got her profile and chose her plan, a qualified insurance broker can do the rest of the work for her.
And the ACA will not only help those with lower incomes. When my friend loses her insurance as a public school board member (if she doesn't run for reelection), she and her husband will get their health insurance through the ACA. They both have pre-exisitng conditions.
****
Oregon is not working well, though my friend has hand done her application and mailed it in. She too will get lower premiums, though not as dramatic as those in California. Probably because the pool has not been established and/or a smaller pool.
One of the things the ACA needs to still work out is for those of us who live near state borders. Where I live, I go to Oregon for my healthcare, not California, though I live in California. It is my understanding, if insured under ACA, you have to stay in your state for service. -
C4C, he looks like a giant mop!
Kam, sounds like at least one of your friends got a great deal and the other, thank goodness, is now covered. I'm sure there are glitches, not just computer ones, to work out in the ACA, but it is a good start. We had to start somewhere, and the Repubs would never have allowed a single payer bill to hit the House floor. -
It is fascinating that, where there is a good news story such as health care enrollment in California, the right respond by announcing it just isn't so. Deny - that's the first line of defence in a right wing argument even if that denial is just plain not consistent with the facts. -
Who is denying it Lassie? I live in California and I can report (as I have above and C4C too), that the good news from California is true. -
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/22/us/medicaid-expansion-is-set-for-ohioans.html
Mr. Kasich defied his party’s majorities in the state legislature to push through a multibillion dollar expansion ofMedicaid under President Obama’s health care law.
Do you suppose those that live in Ohio and voted for Mr. Kasich will continue to support him after this - lol, even those who get insured via medicaid?? I wonder who those people on Medicaid think are paying for them? Atleast my friends who are getting subsidies in place of no insurance because of expense (and would presumably get Medicaid help in a crisis), will be contributing to their healthcare costs now. -
Happy Noon-time Everyone!
Sunnyflowers ... we've got lots of cold rain today and forecast for tomorrow as well. Luckily not seeing any freezing rain or snow. Although I wouldn't mind the snow. With all this rain, my dogs are tracking in mud on my clean floors! arghhh.
Tomorrow is cooking day for me ... my mom was going to help, but those plans have changed. She won't be coming up until Thanksgiving day. I'm afraid Tim might not be back until Thursday too. So I'll have to cook the bird myself, along with everything else. It's just a lot of work.
If I made my apple and blackberry pies today .. would they stay fresh until Thursday?
What about if I made the stuffing today? I don't stuff the bird.
Feeling kind of out of sorts today. Can't put my finger on it ... just a general malaise.
Maybe if Enjoyful sees this she can send me a batch of sorts.
hugs,
Bren
PS ... about the healthcare ... Tim is really worried his company is going to quit providing health insurance. I can't remember what his weekly deduction is ... maybe $250 a month for BC/BS with a $1,000 deductible. He works in NC but lives in VA, so I'm not sure how that would work. -
Stupid will always be stupid, but I get my daily laughs from some stupid so make.me.laugh. Some slither out of their dark damp place to make me laugh...how thoughtful! Anyhow, I believe you Kam and Linda, because you are not stupid! And I believe President Obama because healthcare is a good thing. It's logical! More logic would be implementing single payer. So all that other talk is "stuff and nonsense"!
Anyways, enough of that. Today I almost believed we had ghosts in the house. I heard a thump and then Wendel ran to his bed! Then he jumped out and started barking, and barking, and barking at something. I figured he saw something I couldn't as animals are so much more in tune with things supernatural. After about 15 minutes, I went to investigate and wouldn't you know it, the thump I had heard was Mr.T (my turtle) falling out of his aquarium onto the floor (high ledge). The barking was Wendel taking him to his bed and barking at him continuously. Not to worry....Mr.T survived it all and hopefully, learned his lesson. hahahaha! Guess there are no ghosts here! -
Mr T is lucky he didn't become a chewy toy! -
Bren, freeze the pies. I often prepare things ahead of time and refrigerate them. All should be OKAY! Sending you some sorts and ice cream! -
Pip, exactly what I thought! -
Speaking of baking ahead of time, Ray and I baked our Fruit Cakes last night. The fruit had been soaking in Brandy for two weeks. Now the cakes are covered with cheesecloth, sprinkled with Brandy and stored in tins until Christmas. Going to be pretty potent by then! -
Hey Blue ... thanks for the advice. I just made the stuffing. It took a bit of time as I had to make two different kinds. My sis doesn't eat meat and her husband doesn't like celery. Then Tim called and said he wanted to eat out at the truck stop tonight. He's sick of bologna sandwiches. I checked the bank account for him to see if there was enough ... and I discovered that I have royally screwed up. We have a grand total of $11 to our name. I am so mad at myself. At least the stupid account isn't overdrawn.
hugs to all
Bren
PS ... thanks for the sorts. Don't know if they are helping yet. -
That is so funny about Mr. T. Turtles are escape artists! He's so lucky he wasn't a snack for Wendel. We see turtles all the time on our walks. My dogs just ignore them.
How big is Mr. T? -
He's tiny........about 3 inches. -
Don't worry Bren, my chequing account usually gets that low by the end of the month. I make it a policy not to touch my savings or I'd be lost! -
Komondor - yup. I was driving ( years ago) in Bethesda, MD - and saw one just wandering. I stopped, he was clearly lost, no collar, and so I took him to the nearest house, which also happen to have a bowl of water outside for their dog, woman welcomed me, and called SPCA, and then a shelter, we got a rope, tied up my new friend to a pole, and waited, and waited, for him to be picked up. This was b4 cell phones, so i was grateful to this woman. No one claimed him, much too big for me to manage, tho he was still a pup. Finally someone did adopt him. Seems when many of the international families living in the area leave, all the embassies are in nearby DC, dogs & cats are often abandoned. Really FANCY dogs, pure bred, like the Komondor.
Snow just started, supposed to be rain tomorrow, almost 2 inches for us, and then ICE tomorrow night & Thursday. Going to hide under the duvet for the duration
-
Bren, the pies will be fine until Thursday if you refrigerate them. The stuffing/ dressing will be fine, too. Just remember to heat it to 165 degrees before serving on Thursday. Hope you get the out of sorts, sorted out. -
