No problem here and using Chrome.

Everybody lies, everyone has their hypocritical moments, good people do bad things. HOWEVER....to blithely bring government and related industries to a screeching halt, to furlough almost a million people without caring how it would hurt their families, and all for an idiotic attempt to repeal a LAW that has the mandate of the people....I don't know what to say. There aren't words.

Don't even get me started on the critters who say they need their paychecks for their nice house and their kid in college! Because none of those furloughed have bills, right?

Law for future - if Congress shuts down government, they don't get paid until it's fixed. They need to feel the consequences of their actions. How long would any of you have a job if you just shut down your company? How can anyone think this is okay?

If I had any hair left, I'd pull it all out and mail it to Boehner!

The best liars are those that believe their own lies. The Republicans are GREAT liars for that very reason. Most of them (I think) actually believe the tripe they are spewing.

The Republicans are screaming that the Dems refuse to negotiate. Negotiate on what? From what I've heard, it's defund Obamacare or government is closed. Is that it? Am I missing something?

Just checking that when you're talking about the wonky tool bar you mean this, that appears at the top of the text entry field?

    image

It's a new format, designed to let members connecting with mobile devices and tablets format their text (which wasn't possible with the previous format). Mouse over the various icons to identify what each does. The little green for images is gone, but the function's still there!

On the way to see the dermatologist about another possible skin cancer.

E- they seem (again) to think that if they say often enough that it's Obama and the Dems fault that everyone will believe them. Their idea of negotiation is they get what they want. If they don't, then it's that the other side is unwilling to negotiate.

Mods - there are no emoticons anymore. Are you going to bring them back?

E, that's it in a nutshell. Some say the Repubs will settle for a bone, such as not taxing medical instruments. But at this point I think the Dems' backs are so far up, they'll never compromise. I HOPE NOT. And why should they. Obama just jumped 5 points in the polls and most people blame the Regressives for the government shut down. I am looking so forward to 2014!

You are correct, E. Defund the Affordable Care Act or the government stays closed. They are trying unconstitutionally overturn a law that they cannot repeal through the constitutionally-mandated process to do that. They had their chance to kill the law in the 2012 election, but THE PEOPLE SPOKE. They re-elected President Obama with a clear and convincing majority, as well as increased the Democratic majority in the Senate and thereby affirmed their support of the law. The only reason they kept the House in spite of a million more votes for Democratic House candidates than Republican candidates is because they cooked the Congressional districts. So much for accepting the results of elections and moving on ... They are trying to destroy the democratic process through the budget.

gardengumby, you're right about the emoticons, but adding an expanded suite of emoticons is definitely on our To-Do list! (Imagine a smile here).

Had an encounter with a Teahadist while waiting in line for my Vit D at the pharmacy. He was talking to one of my former coworkers who is now furloughed. I was surprised, as he was complaining of the government being shut down - wow, I said to myself, this guy believes in government and my own sense of judgement had him already pegged as TP. Ofcourse, government to him are forest roads so he can go hunting and have his private playground in the woods. Another Teahadist chimed in, saying "we pay taxes, they shouldn't shut the forest down, or close roads." (Thousands of them, thousands of miles of dirt roads, degrading our water supply, the scenic beauty and more importantly, no money to maintain them as taxes as a % of GDP have gone down over all of our lifetimes). I couldn't help myself and said, the problem is that no one wants to pay taxes anymore and the feds have less money than they use to have in order to maintain all of those roads. His response, "huh, stutter, well they just spend those taxes wrong" then went into his tirade of all these freeloaders getting free money.....Imagine, as much as his disabled brother, according to him. WTF? His brother is not a freeloader, everyone else is?

As a federal employee, I probably wouldn't have gone this far, but I went one step further, because now I'm retired!, out of disgust and said "I can't argue with a Tea Partier (even though he had not self-identified that way explicitly). His response, "That's because we're always right." I then wondered what it would be like to be his wife. If this man thinks he's always right, he must carry that into his personal relationships.

I must admit, I had a sour feeling about this guy from the get go, unlike my teddy bear TP Contractor who I felt could reason things beyond the tired bromides, but after the fact, I wondered if I could have approached him differently. Guided him to see a different way of seeing things - especially around budgets and government agencies. I think I'm just mad and fed up with these people, and why I continue to mention that if I see someone who collected Medicaid for their health treatments while using the word "socialism" in a perjorative way and especially in reference to someone else getting the benefits of Obamacare (which in most cases requires the customer to pay a premium!!), I will probably not be able to bite my tongue.

I find teabags to be very scary. They are irrational, angry and totally brainwashed by the right wing PTB. The phrase tealiban perfectly describes their loony mind sets.

I have accepted the fact that I just plain do not like those people. The truth is that if it is something they want or need or benefit from, it is good and necessary in their minds. If they don't need it, it's bad and should be taken away from 'other' people. They are simply selfish and can't (and don't care to) see beyond the end of their own noses.

hubby was talking the other day about the actual brain differences, but I think it comes down to the greedy/selfish gene being too strong in the R's

A kid I know posted on Facebook that the shutdown was a non event. When I replied with examples of the real damage it was doing. He de-friended me. Facts really upset the right wing.

It seems as though the Tea Party has given license to "some" people to engage in the bad behavior against which larger society formerly had firm strictures. Even if you were a bigot, you were expected to keep it quiet and act civil in public. You didn't trash or call people names who were down on their luck, laid off or needed a little extra help. You at least pretended to make an effort to see someone else's point of view and when someone else made the effort to see yours, you didn't call them weak and stupid.

I have tried hard to see the baggers' positions. I have tried hard to see their side of the story. But all I hear is, "I don't want to pay taxes. I want what I want and to hell with you. I don't want to help anyone because they're lazy if they need help. If I have to help someone, I want to help only people who look like me. I want things but I don't want you to have them. Government shouldn't take care of people unless it is taking care of me. I hate socialism but I enthusiastically collect more Medicare benefits than I paid in and more Social Security benefits than I paid in, because the government OWES me because I paid taxes -- but I don't want to pay taxes anymore because they just go to feed lazy people." DH keeps reminding me that it is fear speaking, but I don't hear fear. I just hear hate.

It is sad. They don't want to reach out to help their neighbor anymore. Maybe they never did -- maybe they just feel like it is now socially acceptable to say out loud how much they hate their neighbor.

    :-(

Actually, RL, I think you and your DH are both right. There is a very, very strong connection between fear and hate.

GG, it's hard to sort out nature vs. nurture in disorders such as tealibanism, but I think somebody should study it. Maybe a massive twin study is in order.

Btw, now I can't find the emoticons. :-(

OK, I have just discovered the way to put in an image from FB. Click on the little picture icon above. Then click Link. Then right click to paste in the image in the box that says Image Web Link. The URL for the image will appear. Then push Insert and the image will appear. It seems you can no longer right click copy/right click paste in the message box here on BCO.

ETA - this is in IE.
