Wading into unfamiliar territory with our dev disabled son. We know our time on earth is short and its time he learned to drive. So we are going through all the panic of parents of teenagers.

He hasn't been ready and he's severely dyslexic so going to the DMV and taking a written test has stalled the process. And we didnt think he was ready anyway. In Texas you can take the written test and a 6 hour course online at home to get your learners permit. So I am sitting with him and making sure he gets the content.

Since he was laid off last April he's been bored and a pain in the neck but yesterday he reconnected with a lady manager at the dollar store in the same shopping strip where he did his sign flipping. She wants him for shelf stocking and clean chores. So if he gets through the corporate application process we have high hopes.

Gawd I hate the thought of his first fender bender.......and I hope its only a fender bender. I was in much worse accident when I was a new driver....my car was hit from behind and pushed into another. I ended up with an accordion. Pre airbags and no one was hurt.

He may be 24 but we are dealing with teen issues.

You want a revolution? It’s often small gestures that make it. On September 17, 1967, Jim Morrison refused to change the lyrics to “Light My Fire” during The Doors’ appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Thank you Julianna for thinking of me.  I went shopping and did a little birthday therapy.  It's pretty quiet around here with Tim gone, and the rest of my family is traveling on vacation today.

I got a speeding ticket on Friday the 13th ... arghh ... and I had to spend all my birthday cash to pay that stupid ticket. I didn't tell Tim about it ... didn't want a big lecture on my driving.  I'm so mad at myself for getting that ticket.  I was saving that money for a trip to see my grandsons next month. !@#

    hugs to you,

    Bren

Guess it shows how tired of death and stupidity I am today.  Have been that way quite a lot lately.  My really bright spot is my BLOCK the stupidity button that was installed here so that I can share my thoughts and feelings with others who feel like-wise I'm sure.

    Bren -- enjoy today.

Alexandria, sending hope and prayers to you.

My 2 cents' worth about all the hate emanating from those nasty folk about Ms America:  For sure she (and those of us here) do NOT share their values, horrible as they are.

Happy birthday, Bren!  And many, many more!

Don't have much time lately but wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Bren!  You little speed demon you Wink  Tickets suck.

I haven't gone into great detail but my DH is on home hospice care for pancreatic cancer.  We've been riding a roller coaster of ups and downs and I'm learning more about nursing stuff than I ever wanted to know.  We're doing OK though.

I've been reading and trying to stay caught up with everybody.  Alexandria ... hope your Dad gets better and can go home soon.  Sending (((hugs))) to all that need them.

I didn't know 'values' were exclusively American.  Seems to me the good ones are human and not related at all to what ethnic background anybody is.  A lot of warped thinking out there on the Miss America thing IMO.

Don't know what all the deletions were about but it never turns out well when 'new' board members seem to appear out of nowhere and somehow manage to find us in our little hidey hole.

ETA:  noquitter ... Glad to see you so quickly found a compatible group on the Mirror thread.  I'm sure that will work out much better for everybody than coming here and immediately insulting one of us is likely to.  Best of luck to you with your cancer treatment.

Oh for pete's sake ... I just talked to Libby and she said she's been banned until September 29th.  What a bunch of horseshit.  Excuse my language.  I just don't get it.  I read the poster's profile and other posts and she also got into it with another longstanding member of this forum.

Alyson, I missed all the fun too.  I work part time and I had to be at work for a while.....then home just a short time, and had to go to the store.  It was probably good that I missed it --- I could still be tearful  as we speak.  I did get a pm though so I have a smidgen of an idea.  I'll just have to be content with that.  I have to go now and find this person and get a block on......that will be the last of this one but you and I are going to have to "hang" out a little better so we don't have to be Johnny Come Lately's to the goings on.

I like your suggestion for growing up.....and isn't it you that had some BIG Girl panties the other day.  Perhaps there are a few who could borrow them.

I really do wonder how many times this sort of thing has to happen.  This is totally senseless.  When I wonder will there be enough blood shed to register for the NRA.

D.C. Massacre Shows Need for Background Checks, Assault Weapons Ban

As a result of the horrific massacre in Washington, D.C.'s Navy Yard, the NRA and its political minions have suddenly eased off gloating about the Colorado vote in which a very small minority of eligible voters recalled two supporters of gun control from the state senate.

The massacre, in which a man who had a history of disturbing incidents with guns reportedly killed 12 people and wounded at least 8 others with an AR-15 assault weapon, a semi-automatic pistol and another unspecified gun, has evoked new calls for gun control. Senator Diane Feinstein's statement on the massacre got straight to the point:

There are reports the killer was armed with an AR-15, a shotgun and a semiautomatic pistol when he stormed an American military installation in the nation's capital and took at least 12 innocent lives...This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons-including a military-style assault rifle-and kill many people in a short amount of time.

    "When will enough be enough?

"Congress must stop shirking its responsibility and resume a thoughtful debate on gun violence in this country. We must do more to stop this endless loss of life."

Senator Jay Rockefeller echoed the call: "We are becoming far too familiar with senseless, tragic violence. This is the seventh shooting since 2009, and these repeated incidents demand our attention."

The NRA declined comment on Monday. Later on, they are expected to regurgitate the "a good guy with a gun is the only way to stop a bad/crazy guy with a gun" and "the real issue here is weak national security" memes. With respect to their argument that not much can be done about people with psychological derangement getting guns, however, Eugene Robinson responds in his WaPo column:

Opponents of gun control argue that, instead of infringing Second Amendment rights, we should focus on the fact that most, if not all, of these mass shooters are psychologically disturbed. But many of the officials who take this view are simultaneously trying their best to repeal Obamacare, which will provide access to mental health services to millions of Americans who are now uninsured.

Earlier this year legislation to curb gun violence, including mental health reforms and bills to provide stronger background checks and restrict high-capacity gun magazines failed in congress shortly after the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school massacre. In response, Vice President Biden announced that the Administration is taking executive action, which does not require congressional consent: As CNN's Adam Aigner-Treworgy reports:

The first action closes a loophole that could allow individuals prohibited from purchasing certain restricted weapons to do so legally by registering them under the name of a trust or corporation. Calling this "an easy way to evade the required background checks," Biden said this new proposed rule, issued by ATF, would require individuals attempting to register firearms under a trust or corporation to be subject to the same background checks as individual gun purchasers..."Last year alone there were 39,000 requests for transfer of these restricted firearms to trusts or to corporations," Biden said.

The second action addresses U.S. military firearms sold or transferred to foreign allies. Currently the government must approve any re-importation of these weapons back to the United States, but the rule announced Thursday would deny nearly all such requests. The vice president said that since 2005, the government has approved the transfer of more than 250,000 of these firearms.

"We're ending the practice of allowing countries to send back to the United States these military weapons to private entities," Biden said. "Period. Period. The new policy's going to help keep military-grade firearms off our streets."

The reforms are welcome, but are small-scale in a nation that has more guns than people. Thus the Vice President emphasized that legislative reforms remain the "best way to reduce gun violence."

"If Congress won't act, we'll fight for a new congress," Biden said. "It's that simple." That's the unavoidable challenge advocates of a sane firearms policy must accept to put an end to the NRA's political bullying.

Just one more thing to keep the applecart falling over --- things do backfire though.

    Dumb And Dumber

Sep 17, 2013 | By CAP Action War Room

The federal government is hurtling toward two critical deadlines where a failure to act will be extraordinarily damaging to the US economy. But Republicans think it’s okay to play political games even if it means sabotaging our economy.

Deadline 1: To avoid government shutdown, Congress needs to pass a spending bill to fund the federal government by September 30. Republicans have been engaged in a civil war for weeks over how best to use this deadline to manufacture a crisis. Those on the far right, led by Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, insist they shut down the government unless the budget fully defunds Obamacare, even touring the country to promote a shutdown. And now there are reports that House Republican leadership is following their lead in allowing such a bill to come to a vote.

The consequences of a government shutdown are severe: social security checks might not go out, our troops might not get paid, and the economy would take a huge hit. Indeed, some fearful Republicans have warned their constituents as much.

A majority of Americans will blame Republicans if the government shuts down. But Republicans are still unable to let go of their obsession with repealing Obamacare, and are now barreling towards shutdown. That’s just dumb.

Deadline 2: The U.S. government will default on its obligations sometime in mid-to-late October unless Congress extends its borrowing limit. This would have catastrophic consequences for not just the United States economy; it could cause a worldwide crash even worse than we faced in 2008. But House Republican leadership — that’s right, not just some of their crazier members — want to use the debt limit to force Congress to delay Obamacare for one year. Speaker John Boehner, who previously insisted he would not use the debt ceiling for political leverage, has promised “a whale of a fight.”

We’ve been down this road before. Paying our bills on time is non-negotiable. Congress needs to pay the bills Congress itself racked up. Period.

Even among those that oppose the health care law, more than half want their elected officials to make it work as well as possible. So if Republicans truly think the American people support their threats of default instead of doing the hard work of governing, well…that’s dumber.

BOTTOM LINE: Americans are tired of the fighting and of having their economic security put on the line time and time again. Harming the economy to refight old political battles won’t help middle class families.

Yorkie...don't think I've ever mentioned that the house where I work has a Yorkie who is just a sweetheart.  The daughter recently went to college and took the other older Yorkie with her.  No one in the household seemed very happy....included the Yorkie now with no play-mate.  About a month ago.....little baby Yorkie made her apperance.  Everyone is happy now, including me.  This little one...was about 2 lbs. on her arrival  and I have nick-named her Smigen.  Her older, bigger sister is a tad overwt.  She is about 7 or 8 lbs as Grandma let things fall off the table on a rather consistent basis for awhile.  That is fixed pretty much now.  I've spent  a lot of time around a lot of dogs, but never much around a Yorkie.  I'm smitten----wonderful companions with dancing delightful eyes.

Illinois lady, just in the interest of accuracy the shooter in DC had a 12 gauge shotgun. They believe he obtained a handgun when he killed a security guard. The reports on an AR 15 are now said to be part of many inaccuracies by the media initially. That doesn't make this any less tragic.
