    From todays "The Atlantic" newsfeed:

'We Made It': Humanity Has Arrived at Interstellar Space

Voyager 1 has entered a region of space beyond our solar bubble, and it has sent back a little sound for us to listen to.

    Sep 12 2013, 2:54 PM ET

An illustration of the positions of the two Voyager spacecraft, with Voyager 1 just outside of the bubble around our sun. (NASA)

Thirty-six years ago, from the ground in Florida, Voyager 1 launched into space. It traveled out of Earth's atmosphere, and it kept going. It passed Jupiter in 1979 and then  Saturn in 1980. And then it kept going.

In 1990, six billion miles from Earth, it looked back on the planets of our solar system, and photographed them all.

    "Family Portrait" (NASA)

And today, in a historic announcement, NASA revealed that this piece of machinery, built by humans here on our planet, has officially sailed beyond the region of solar winds around our sun and into interstellar space.

The transition happened a year ago, around August 25, 2012, but scientists didn't realize it until recently, when they analyzed the vibrations made by an explosion on the sun in March of 2012, which arrived at the spacecraft in April 2013. As NASA explains, "The pitch of the oscillations helped scientists determine the density of the plasma. The particular oscillations meant the spacecraft was bathed in plasma more than 40 times denser than what they had encountered in the outer layer of the heliosphere. Density of this sort is to be expected in interstellar space."

To listen to that sound, that distant whistle, sends shivers down my spine. This is the sound of an explosion on our sun, traveled 12 billion miles, and heard in interstellar space.

Imagine Voyager, 36 years into its journey from our little planet, and listen to that sound, again and again.

Go to the article and listen to the Wav file.  It is so, so cool!

Ditto on the "cool" RL. Amazing what astronomers and aeronautical engineers can achieve. Somehow that pic invoked an image from a Woody Allen movie..the traveling "boob." (Note, I will only use this word in this context.)

Almost posted in the bubble, but decided against.  The question was asked about why, if Obama is so respected, there was another attack against a US consulate in Kabul, Afghanistan?

    The almost post was this:

Kabul, Afghanistan is a war-zone.  We are combatants over there and have been for the past ten years.  Just FYI, in case that particular piece of news hasn't been broadcast on Fox.

And to add to Alexandria's post -- terrorists are criminals, not "the international community."  I don't notice the Irish army, for example, or the British army attacking American outposts.

Alexandria, they just want to throw a negative spin on everything!  Makes me laugh that they cannot admit the truth.  Your President is a Gentleman and a Scholar!

Thanks, Blue.  I guess my post on the page before this was overlooked.  Here are the salient points:

September 17, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Terrorists kill 16 people, including two Americans.

July 9, 2008. Istanbul, Turkey. Terrorists kill 6 people.

March 18, 2008. Sana’a, Yemen. Terrorists kill 2 people nearby while firing RPGs at the U.S. Embassy.

September 12, 2006. Damascus, Syria. Terrorists kill 4 people, wound 13 when they attack the U.S.Embassy with a car bomb, a truck bomb, grenades and automatic weapons.

March 2, 2006. Karachi, Pakistan. Terrorists attack the U.S. Consulate and kill 4, including U.S. diplomat David Foy, who was specifically targeted by the attackers.

December 6, 2004. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Terrorists kill 9 people when they storm the U.S. Consulate and occupy the perimeter wall.

July 30, 2004. Tashkent, Uzbekistan.  A suicide bomber attacks the U.S. Embassy, killing 2 people.

May 12, 2003. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Terrorists kill 9 Americans and 25 other people when they storm the U.S. Embassy compound and detonate a suicide truck bomb.

February 28, 2003. Islamabad, Pakistan. Terrorists fire on the U.S. Embassy, killing 2 people.

June 14, 2002. Karachi, Pakistan. Suicide bomber kills 12 people and wound 51 in an attack on the U.S. Consulate.

January 22, 2002. Calcutta, India. Terrorists kill 5 people in an attack on the U.S. Consulate.

October 23, 1983. Beruit, Lebanon. Terrorists kill 241 Americans killed, 60 injured.

Hm.  Looks like the "international community" (of terrorists) didn't respect Bush or Reagan much either.

A bubble - interesting, also implies if someone speaks the truth in a bubble, the bubble will burst, not gonna change a thing.  WASTE of time to read, letalong enter. NOTE: it's a waste of time to be in a bubble - air much fresher outside.

Boulder CO - does anyone know how to contact Anne, hope she's safe.  After the fires, mud slides, and truly monsoon rains, tragic combination - terribly destructive.

Hope all are having a good day...

The REAL terrorists are above.  I also think there are hundreds of questions when you are in the party of no and you have allowed T.Party wingnuts the full invasion of your party.  This is not saying the Left doesn't have issues......when ther are two, it takes two.  The GOP is one huge mess....so lots of finger pointing to help move past that fact.  Except....getting real, owning the problem and then fixing the problem would be so much better.  Too bad that along with the party of no it is also the party of stupid.

    Politics USA

Another Obama Success That Republicans Can’t Handle As Deficit Shrinks to 5 Year Low

    By: Sarah JonesSep. 13th, 2013

Republicans are once again threatening not to pay off Congress’ existing bills by refusing to raise the debt ceiling unless… (insert Tea Party cause du jour). The problem is not only do polls show that the public will blame them much more than they will blame President Obama, but the deficit is on track to be the the smallest it’s been in five years.

The deficit shrank 35% from last year, which puts it on track to be the smallest in five years, according to the AP. “The U.S. government posted a narrower budget deficit in August compared with a year ago, keeping the annual gap on track to be the smallest in five years. The deficit for August was $147.9 billion, the Treasury reported Friday. That brought the annual budget gap through the first 11 months to $755 billion, or 35 percent lower than the nearly $1.2 trillion in red ink for the same period last year.”

The deficit is the yearly difference between what we take in with revenues (taxes) and what we spend, and each year’s deficit gets added to our debt. The debt ceiling gets raised to pay off spending that Congress has already authorized, so not raising it is akin to threatening your credit card company that you won’t pay your bill unless something they give you something totally unrelated, something you have always wanted, like say PS4.

Try it and see how it goes. Your point should be that you will not do what you promised to do unless you get a toy – an incentive – to do your part. You can explain to the credit card company with much smug delight that since they already gave you the money, you hold the upper hand: It’s the Play Station or nothing.

Republicans are threatening not to raise the debt ceiling unless funding for Obamacare is delayed. The thing is, the Tea Party was none-too-pleased with this debt ceiling appeasement because it was only a trick. You see, Republicans were going to crash the economy just to appease the Tea Party and conservative donors who want Obamacare destroyed. But Republicans knew that they could not destroy ObamaCare — thus, they are going to destroy the economy just to save their own face.

Yes, even talking about not raising the debt ceiling creates instability and chaos, neither of which are good for the market. But the last time Republicans did this, it cost us an estimated 18.9 billion dollars.

So their argument is that they are going to hold the debt ceiling hostage at a time when the deficit is at a five year low, because they lack the courage to explain to their base and their funders that the ObamaCare fight is over.

Is it hard to fear-monger a deficit that hit a five year low? Probably not, since Republicans are so good at pretending that Saint Reagan did not raise the debt ceiling three times more than Obama and a large portion of the debt isn’t from two unfunded Bush wars (that Obama put back on the budget, as if he were the fiscal conservative) and unfunded Medicare Part D prescription plan.

    -------------------------------------end

Get it, folks?  THE MONEY HAS ALREADY BEEN SPENT.  IT WAS SPENT BECAUSE IT WAS AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS TO BE SPENT!!! That's right.  It was authorized to be spent by the same people who are now threatening to renege on the debt THEY CREATED.  So when your retirement investments crash, ask the Bank of Boehner and Cantor to make you whole.

Sunnyflowers ... hope you're having a wonderful afternoon!  I am in contact with Anne via FB.  They are situated on a little rise, so far they are above the flooding.  But, about an hour ago, she posted that they had lost all power and the roads were closed and they were virtually stranded at their home. Cell phone service was spotty.

I'll let her know you asked about her.

    hugs,

    Bren

PS ... If I hear something else, I'll post it here for you.

I love Pope Francis. Pope Benedict had evil eyes and loved his Prada shoes. Him retiring and Francis taking over was one of the best things that has happened to the church.

If he starts "cleaning house" and getting rid of abusive, pedophile priests, Francis should be canonized. I'm praying for that to happen. Smile

Pope Francis makes me feel like I'm in a time machine and John XXIII has been reincarnated. It's like the tea nuts took over the church at some point and finally someone is kicking them out.
