Dose DenseTaxol Aches-Yikes
First treatment on Tuesday. Felt ok on Wednesday. Not so great yesterday. While I am not feeling horribly bone crushing pain from Taxol that I had been warned about, these aches are quite unpleasant. Weirdly the pain started in my right shoulder and worked it's way down my right side and then worked it's way up my left side, starting with my ankle. I've taken all the supplements. I even got up in the middle of the night and took a Norco. Not much relief.
Weirdest is the cramping in my ovary area. Lots of pinching pain. Boy, this is not fun.
Still...it's better than AC chemo.
How long do the aches last?

Hi Arya,
I am also doing dose dense taxol. I just had #2 last Thursday. I know what you mean about the horrible ovary pinching. I thought I was the only one! I did take Claritin the morning after chemo and it helped a lot with the bone and joint aches this time. I take one for about 3 days after chemo. Have you had any headaches with this? I was in bed all day Saturday with a horrible migraine.
Lisa -
Today is day 6 and it is the first day I have felt remotely human since Thursday. I broke down and took Norco for the pain. Last night even my face hurt! Today is much better though.
No headaches for me so far. Hope things are getting better for you. -
Taxol Thursday still much pain today! First time I ever just want to quit. Tramadol for pain not helping. Hope tomorrow is better as I must work.
Lisa -
Wish you all well as you get through the Double Devil - that Dose Dense Taxol. Did DD Taxol x 6 last year. Had horrible pain - but survived. :-) It's tough, but doable. Had really bad pain for about 5 days every cycle, starting a couple days after each tx. Took Vicodin through all 6 tx. But about two weeks after my final Taxol...the pain was mostly gone.
Are any of you in a clinical trial for the dd Taxol? That's the only reason I chose it.
-
I chose DD 4x's of Taxol because I wanted to get it done. Kind of rethinking that now. But not really.
-
Dd taxol x 4 because MO thought I would tolerate well. Told family yesterday if I had more than 1 more to go I would NOT make it. AC was piece of cake for me compared to this.
-
Just one more! You can totally do this.
I feel better 7 days out on Taxol than I did with AC. That is something. -
Thanks Arya.. ac was a breeze for me. Totally unprepared for taxol which was supposed to be easier. Thankfully I have these hoards to turn to

Hello Ladies,
I feel your pain. I had taxotere rather than taxol, so the side effects are similar. There is bone pain from the nulasta, but the myalgias from the taxotere were the worst. My muscles hurt very badly even my face muscles. I was very sore to the touch all over so sleeping was impossible the night 3 days after infusion. I did some research, and ended up asking my onc for Gabapentin rather than the narcotics. They often give this for neuropathy, so he agreed to try it, and for me it was nearly a miracle. You have to start at a lower dose and work up as it can make you a bit dizzy and sometimes sleepy, but it clearly eased the pain. The sleepiness was good considering the steroids made it very hard to sleep. I started with 300 mg 1x per day and worked up to 300 mg 3 x per day.
Hope this helps...
-
I am on gabapentin now and am feeling much better. Thanks.
-
My wife has to do DD Taxol soon. She is finishing up her last AC in a week. Does she need to get the Nulasta shot for Taxol as well?
-
My oncologist said yes to Neulasta with Taxol.
-
Thanks AryaS,
Geez I was hoping we could avoid that extra trip for the shot.
-
AryaS,
I am so glad to hear that the Gabapentin helped. It made a huge difference for me. Best of luck with the rest of your treatment.
-
Wicked glad I found this thread. Taxol dd x4 here. Was so surprised by the pain that crept up. Figured the hell I went thru on A/C this would be a breeze.
Check- Pain in my lower ovary area glad to read others are having it too.
Check - bloated full belly burp toot toot.
Check - bone pain ouchie!!! (Thinking am I just a whimp?) phew good others are enduring too
Interesting about supplements to ward off nerve damage, why didnt my dr recommend this?
Also interedting about the drug gadadepin?? For pain the narcotics don't touch the pain not to mention they make me loopy so working is hard, I've worked they surgeries and ac and hope to continue in while on taxol.
Although part of me wishes I taken more time to be sick and not prove to the world that I m strong.... Why to what point??? I should if spent last few months living life growining my heart and soul and healing my body. -
Hello,
Okay, count me in on the DD Taxol aches. I am very encouraged to read that the Gabapentin helps as that is what I have on my table waiting for me to start taking tomorrow for round 2 of TX.
My 1st round of Taxol nearly did me in. Narcotic pain meds did not relieve it I was in such pain my legs would not support me, needed help to walk. Also had unreal menstrual like cramps and ovary pain. Was beyond miserable and it really zapped my energy being so sick. Real happy to try this different approach and now not feeling so uptight about tomorrow anymore. Followed you here Rain
-
Did round 2 last week. I am still not feeing great.
Edited to add: Ovary pain! Yes! My SE's start with ovary pain. It's like they're being pinched in a vice! I can feel my fertility being squeezed away! Oh well.
My belly is distended and we are not sure why.
The gabapentin has helped a bit with the intermitent pinching in my joints. Narcotics help me with muscle pain and nothing else can touch it although by this time, with 3 Advil, I could function. Advil is still not touching the pain.
I am taking l-glutamine in powder form mixed with juice. There is a thread about it helping on here. I don't know if it is making a difference because I am still in a lot of pain.
Have had some neuropathy this time with numbness in my hands and feet.
They also told me Taxol would be easier than AC but it's just different, not at all easier.
I admire all of you whom are working. I coincidentally left my job two weeks before diagnosis. I know I could not work through this.
I told my husband a couple of days ago that I was done but he is convincing me to do round 3. I keep saying, "This can not be healthy."
If anyone else has found anything that helps, please post it.
It's a good thing there is an end in sight.
BTW, I asked the nurse why I am having so much pain. She said they are finding that younger women (I am 41) feel more pain with Taxol. What?! Why?! -
Hi Ladies - I am so sorry about your aches and pains - it can be horrible. This may sound trite but when I was having some sort of major reaction to my taxotere - morphine did not help!!! - one of the Ward Sisters came to me at 3 am in morning and said I know this will sound funny, but I am going to give you 2 paracetamol and a heating pad for the severe pain in your back. The throb of pain actually felt like it was lifting me off the bed. Every beat of my heart caused this enormous throb of pain. Guess what it definitely helped!!! I am not sure if the throbbing was going to ease anyway, but it is worth a try. The heating pad you use are the ones made for sports injuries. They plug in, and are soft and pliable, so they can wrap around your joints - shoulders, wrists, ankles etc. If the pain is in your back lie on top of the pad. Good luck - thinking of you all.

Very good news to report. The combination of Gabapentin and Prednisone has kept my agony away. So far so good from my infusion on Thursday. Feeling very relieved and grateful for this. Last time was just too hard on me. Also having a bit of an energy burst from the steroids. Okay, I'll take it.
-
Awesome news Ocean! Wicked glad to read this!
-
This time is challenging again. High pain levels hit last night. I was actually whimpering at times it was so bad even though I was on my meds.
They have me on:
300 mg Gabapentin 3 x day
20 mg Prednisone 2 x day
4 mg Hydromorphone/Dilaudid every 4-6 hrs for pain
I need to be on top of all the meds to manage. It's a lot to keep it all organized what to take and when. Pain is primarily in the legs, but also back, arms, shoulders and there is the period like pains which feel so weird. Legs are weak but it feels good to move around and stretch out every once in awhile. These meds make my head a bit fuzzy too and prone to dizziness so need to be cautious navigating around and no driving or anything like that.
Just thought I'd share and to also log for myself. This journey sometimes just really bites.
-
Oh Ocean, how terrible it sounds! Makes it even worse to think that just 2 weeks ago those meds seemed to be helping you. They need to work for you today too. Pan is awful, it can drive people to dark places. Do whatever you need to keep on top of it. Can I overnight you some of those boxes that can help keep meds organized? Just PM mailing address. Hugs, Nisa

Hi ocean... So sorry about your pain...I'm on the same as you with gabapabtene, prednisone, but for the pain, I have codeine... Today is day 5 and just like you, the pain has started.. Mine seems to be just lower body, and I told my sister that my ovaries really really hurt!! Anyway, codeine seems to have taken the edge off 😊..
Please feel better soon.. -
Hi all sorry everyone is in pain I had same joint and muscle pain had hard time getting up and down stairs.Went today for third taxol told my oncologist about symptoms of joint pain and some tingling and numbness in my hands and feet so that was it made me agree to delay treatment til next week and wouldn't hear about anything else.Just want to get this done as I drive two hours one way for treatment and still haven't had surgery.I hate this whole cancer journey.
-
Still struggling. Days are manageable (with pain pills) but for some reason the nights are really hard. High pain levels and off the roof sensitivity with finger tips and toes. Again, really only at an unbearable level at night, daytime is okay but still a bit of a struggle and I can't go anywhere. Will talk to the Onc about this and see what the recommendation is.
I should only have one more day at the most of this then it will be gone. Keep telling myself this. This is exhausting and not getting sleep is not helping.
-
Hey, I am sorry to hear that it is not getting better. I stay on top of gabapentin and norco and still have a great deal of pain but it is not as bad as it was. I just had my last one today. Feeling good on all the steroids.
I am just so glad this is almost over.
I have heard the weekly is much easier but I am still glad I did it this way.
Good luck to you all. -
Ocean this sucks! Thinking of you often. Do you take a sleep aid? I take the nightquilzzzzz sleep aid for 5 days after chemo, stop then start taking it the night before chemo.
-
my wife is on her first dose dense taxol. She has ovary pain and stomach issues. Our mo says that those aren't se of taxol but I have read alot of women saying they experience the same. My wife is worried about the ovaries.
-
I had ovary pain and mo said same thing. I told him he should add the ovary pain to expected se 's since I spoke with lots of women who had the pain. Pains lasted about 2 days for me. Good luck to your wife.
Lisa -
Thanks Lisa, she told me its not as bad as yesterday. Today is day 4 since infusion. A little bone pain but not bad.
