Xeloda and swollen feet and ankles.

Hi there,

I'm taking Xeloda and have very swollen feet and ankles.  They sent me to look for a blot clot, but didn't find one.  Then today, they sent me for an ultarsound.  They did the ultrasound, then sent me off to drink until my bladder was full, and then  they did the ultrasound again.  I was just wondering if anyone has any idea of what they are looking for?  Isn't the swelling just a side effect of the Xeloda?  Thanks for any advice.

Laura

Hi Laurie, I just had the same type of ultrasound but it was to make sure I was completely emptying my bladder, has a series of uti's recently. I had a hyster 20 yrs ago so they weren't looking for my uterus/ovaries but maybe they were checking for fluid buildup in that area? Jo

    Thanks, Joanne:

The lab tech did ask if I still had my womb and everything.  It could be that.  Thanks for the help.

Laura, do you have liver mets? I developed swelling also which I think can be a SE of Xeloda but in my case was due to portal hypertension from cirrhosis from liver mets. A diuretic and then a B blocker worked for me.

Best wishes for an answer and some relief. Perhaps in the meantime your onc can at least Rx a diuretic

    Thanks, Katie

I don't think I have liver mets, although I've wondered since every time someone takes a blood sample from me they ask me if I'm on blood thinners.  Anyway, I see my onc in a week and should get some answers.  Thanks for your help.

X has that as a SE & I have it too. Feet already grown a full size & ankles swollen all the time. Hurts a lot when up on my feet too long. Try to have them up as much as possible. No extra scans asked for that yet.

I have this SE, also. My onc did send me for an echocardio to make sure it wasn't a heart issue. When he said something about an ultrasound of my legs to make sure it wasn't a clot I said no. I did want to get my heart checked since that hadn't been done after my original chemo and all the drugs since then. But my ankles/feet both swell so the chances of having a clot in both legs just didn't seem likely and I'm pretty tired of scans/tests.

I try to keep my under control by wearing compression socks most days. But if it is going to be a lazy day with my feet up then I give the toes a break and let them wave in the air. Wearing both compression socks (or grandma socks as I refer to them) and regular socks just seems like a perfect storm for fungus. Especially in the hot, humid weather we have been having.

    Thanks Ladies,

I really suspected this was a side effect.  I also had a vicious rash on my lower legs that went away before I could show it to them.  And a blood vessel that burst in my left eye.  I guess it's all part of the tradeoff.  I am getting good care.  I see my onc next Wednesday, so she should have some ideas.  Thanks again.

    Stagefree,

Thanks for the info.  I'll use that cream if I get another rash.  This was some rash.  My family were all freaking out over it when they saw it, and my niece is a nurse.  But, it went away.  I have bone mets and haven't been in too much pain lately, so I guess I've got it pretty good for now.  Thanks again.
