Retail Therapy

Too funny Bobogirl. The magenta sounds killer. And TarheelMichelle, speaking of rainbows, I work with a girl who has pink, blue AND green streaks in her short blonde hair. It is awesome.
I am too much of a wuss to color my hair vividly- also i can't color it due to the penguin cold cap regimen and I am only a couple months out of chemo- so no color for me for awhile. But I have to admit that i have blue streak clip-ins to match the nails. All are a bright cobalt color by the way, my favorite.
Bobogirl, no shame in driving a minivan, all the better to head home with your loot from a retail therapy day!! -
You're right! I rock the minivan!
Laughing that we are in 'relationships, emotional crises, and depression' section of the website. I think we are incredibly chipper!
Those coldcaps must be amazing! Your hair in the picture is gorgeous. Why doesn't everybody do that? I know so little about it. Clip in blue sounds like the perfect solution. Plus, you can get it really blue and it stays blue.
This weekend I am buying a t-shirt that says WORKING CLASS HERO on it. I have seen it in the shop window, and I have been wanting it. XXX

Hey girls, any fab new purchases in the group?
I have been cleanng out closets and found a lot of stuff I had forgotten I ever had (and some that SHOULD be forgotten and is going to be donated).
But I havent been out to the stores lately so am trying to live vicariously! -
Sciencegal...
Today I bit the bullet and ordered a Freya tankini swimsuit top.
It was not retail therapy. But since I can no longer fit any swimsuit in any store I went into it seems like my best shot at having something to wear this summer. Crabby purchase. My new boobs are too big for normal clothes! But since I am tired of anesthesia and since they are quite nicely shaped and pretty even I'm going to try to live with them. Even though they kind of need their own zip code.
So, speaking of cleaning out closets....bye bye favorite little black dress. Bye bye favorite Victorian costume blouse. Bye bye neon green bike jersey....trust me on that one!!!! ;-) Holy moly!! -
Thanks Dulcigirl for the post!
Good luck with the tankini. Summer is definitely on its way, good to be prepared.
Please forgive me but being too big sounds like a decent problem to have. Many girls on this site are sad about "hamburger bun foobs", so it is good to hear a success story.
I bet it is frustrating to not fit into your old clothes though. For me, mine just dont fit due to my waistline that expanded during chemo! Not as good an excuse as you have, for sure.
Working on it....slow! -
Okay. One of the sisters on the bco website has got me hooked on alex and ani bracelets. They are just little things. Not expensive. She's buying one for every week of rads. I just love them -- they are made with positive energy, they have meanings, they are sort of magic.
You can also get them at zeeberry -- they have 15% off, and free shipping! On another of our threads we have a little bracelet gang going!
Getting my hair done next week -- suggestions on how to have him make it more punk are now being accepted!
-
My waist expanded a bit too. Now I'm a bit afraid of losing it cuz my boobs will look even bigger!! Yes. I realize I'm struggling with having something others want. Definitely no hamburger buns here!! My PS did a lovely job with the shape and they match well. I'm just very self conscious about the size. I've had to totally change my "style" so that I can find things that fit and don't make me feel like a bimbo.
Lol. So....I really hope the tankini works cuz I will NOT be wearing a bikini!! ;-) -
Hi Bobogirl,
Those bracelets sound cool, I will check them out.
Have you decided what color you want your hair to be yet? -
No, Science gal, I want you to help me decide!!!
Dulci, loving your story about all new wardrobe! Tell more when you can. XX
-
Ha!!! No insurance coverage for "new wardrobe made necessary by breast cancer reconstruction." At least not that I know of!!! If anyone hears otherwise please let me know!!!!
Meanwhile I just keep giving more of my old favorites to my daughter. And she looks way cuter in them anyway. Today she wore my favorite long-sleeved bike jersey. Sigh. But these things in fuschia???? No way!
I see my PS on Wednesday. I've been angsting for weeks over whether I should ask what it would take to go smaller....but this weekend I think I've decided to live with them for a few years. I just can't handle the thought of more anesthesia and recovery right now. Enough. -
Good decision Dulci, give your body a break and see if you can adapt. I bet you look great. Love those shoes in your avatar by the way.
Bobo purple is always a rocking color. Of course I love blue but you did already try that as I recall. I always feel super trendy with my blue or magenta hair clip-ins. I just dont have the nerve to do a permanent stripe! Kudos to your bravery. Rock it girl!
So after my exchange surgery I am going through the closets to see what is going to work and what isnt. I am close to the same size I was before the mastectomy, so my job is easier than yours Dulci. I am just shaped differently now. But it is almost like shopping, to find stuff pushed to the back of the closet.
I hope to be feeling well enough to get out to the stores later this week, so please stay tuned for future purchases.
This week all I bought was a "fitbit" pedometer online to help me get back into my workout and movement routine after these current scars heal. I hear that these nag you from your pocket (through bluetooth to the iphone) - cool, I need that! -
I know, I did try blue! It did not stick. Real punks must spend a lot of time on keeping up appearances.
Speaking of which, I think I need a pedometer. Maybe not that fancy one. I don't have a blue tooth or a smart phone. I need to crawl back to the gym. I have been completely lazy. I am tired and have no impetus for exercise. I used to be in training for the marathon. Now, pajamas.
-
Haha I hear 'ya. PJs are my thing lately. And bad movies on Syfy, I hate to admit. I need to get my body and brain back to their fighting weights.
There is a lot of pressure on that little pedometer! I hear 10,000 steps a day is good so I am shooting for about half of that at first. Baby steps- literally. -
This is my first post so bear with me! I have never been much of a shopper but now, since I have my new and improved shape, I am finding it irresistable. Dresses that used to look okay and easy to talk myself out of buying, now fit great and are difficult to resist. I have been spending too much money but enjoying it!
-
Welcome echrisch- Good for you!!! I am so happy for you that you have come through this liking your new shape. That is great to hear.
With what we have all been through we need and deserve our retail therapy. It is easy to justify!
Mind you, I dont go to nordstroms or anything, usually Ross, marshalls, Tj Maxx, sometimes even thrift stores. I love the joy of the hunt!
Shop on girls, and please let us know about fab new purchases so that we can live vicariously. -
Welcome, echrisch! It is almost my birthday, so stand by! Just bought myself a beautiful sky-blue Eileen Fisher scarf -- it was on sale, then 25% off, then free shipping, so... I did buy that.
-
Sciencegal - I LOVE thrift store shopping. Mind you, it takes some time. The last time I went to my fav store the dressing room attendant stopped me because I had more than the 5 items. It was not a Saturday and it was not busy. Prob. shooting myself in the foot but I have not been back there. I live in a small town 45 minutes from Ft. Worth so I need a reason to go shopping. I don't think I've ever been in Nordstroms. Do get good buys occas. at Macys. I have to watch Marshalls. Bought some pants there that had a perm. press crease ironed in mid leg. There is a new Paragon outlet mall in Grand Prairie. Need to go to DD's which is close to 1 hour away and go with her or meet her there. Not that I'm not a big girl and could go by myself.
I need to do the closet clean out but DH has requested den cleanout so I'm working on it.
-
Hey thanks for the info on your goats from the other post! I am living vicariously. Love them, I am a city girl now but grew up feeding baby sheep and goats with a bottle when the mom had problems. Great memories.
Thrift stores are so much fun because you never know WHAT you might find. And it wont cost you a ton when you do find that treasure!
I always try on shirts, skirts and blazers over my clothes, looking like a bag lady, then just take the pants in to the fitting room. I dont think the thrift store staff loves it but they cant really complain. The mirrors are there, after all! -
There is a part on NJ that I call Mall Land along rt 17 and rt 4. It was too hot to do anything so I went. Had good luck with parking spots. Checked out Macy's and a few other shops in Garden State mall didn't find anything even with a 20% off coupon for Macy's So I headed east a little on rt 4 and went to Bergen Town Center had bettter luck there, got a cute summer dress at the Gap and another summer dress over at Century 21 Having fat grafting done later this month so I figure I need a few loose summer dresses to wear over the compression girdle and bra. I am a bit annoyed that I timed the procedure so I am recovering from it in NYC metro area summer heat and humidity. Six weeks of compression garments big yuck.
-
Ouch for the compression garments in summertime but yay for the fat grafting, I hear the results are really great!
Good find on the summer dresses, they always work best when the temperatures are high.
I have never shopped in the New York area, it sounds like fun, thanks for sharing! -
Chutzpah! Keep that AC blasting! I am from NYC, W Village, but now I am south. Woot woot for you and your chutzpah!
Love C 21, but sometimes it disorients me. You should know -- I haven't seen you here -- that this week I am getting prof-edged punk streaks in my hair, even though I am 42. I believe the group has settled on violet.
-
Violet streaks sound awesome Bobogirl. Rock it!
-
Bobogirl, yay Purple Power! (Getting my streaks re-done on Saturday, sister)
Haven't felt good enough to shop "in person" but scored some 75% off Prabal Gurung from Target online. 2-piece dress ($8.74+$10.48), dress ($12.24), and skirt ($10.48). Pretty well made. And it all fit perfectly! -
Excellent, yay for online shopping when we are housebound. And super yay when everything fits!
-
Excellent job Tarheel Michelle! Tomorrow is my birthday... so no shopping for me. NOT!
I just got two beautiful Eileen Fisher scarves -- a brilliant sky blue (cotton linen) and a dandelion one (silk). It seems I am going to need them, too -- my boss called yesterday and said there would be a big promotion.
Have I told you my GFs on another thread ('new and future flat sister, with questions) have got me addicted to Alex and Ani bracelets? We are having a bracelet gang. It is too funny and great!
XXX
p.s. Rockin' the violet blue streaks!
-
Love this thread. I just came on here after "window" shopping on eBay. There are a few things I might end up getting. My partner and I had this amazing dinner at an upscale burger joint. $65. A lot for burgers, fries, and beer. I don't care, though.
The cancer card. Never leave home without it.
ETA: We went on a mini shopping spree at Costco. We haven't been in a while because of the diagnosis, so we stocked up on everything. Two carts, $450, because nothing says necessity like vintage soda.
-
Bobogirl HAPPY birthday and I am glad the violet blue streaks came out well. Super cool. Good luck with the promotion!
Globalgirlygirl great screen name. I love that saying about the cancer card. Too funny.
I have been too busy at work for shopping right now but am hoping to get to Macys soon, there is a glitter band watch that I am truly "needing" that I saw on line but my discounts dont work there.
I also need to go get some inexpensive summer dresses somewhere that I can get greasy during my upcoming radiation treatments and then throw away or just wear around the house if I cant get the stains out. Any excuse to shop, right?????
Love hearing about everyone else's purchases meanwhile!! -
Sciencegal - I had rads last spring and worked throughout. I'm a nurse and wore scrubs with a cami over bra. No stains and none on bras/camies. And my RO had me use nasty Aquaphor. You might be pleasantly surprised. I went to Penneys on Tuesday. They had tons of cute dresses. Who would have thought? Now they had nothing cute like T's etc. And oddly enough 2 of my best church dresses came from Sears but now too small r/t weight gain.
I hit the Ross also on Tuesday. Bought a cute animal print fake crossover top to wear with black skirt, a pair of my fav. cotton shorts in navy. I think I have 7-8 pair but usually during the summer wear/wash a pair every day so I need plenty. Also bought some workout Bermuda length gray light wt. sweat things. UHH can you tell I don't work out since I can't even describe them??? Will be OK for walking in neighborhood maybe about October. HA - Texas weather.
Spent time on Visionworks (old Eyemasters) website looking at glasses. Think that will be a stop next week. I would like to try Zenni but I can't imagine me/DH trying to adjust them to fit face. Figure if I can get 2 pair at least 1 should be a good fit and could get something a little wild/crazy. My eye doc would charge about $700 for new ones and $500 or so for new lenses only and would have to send my current glasses off to optical co. to do lenses only. NOT happening.
-
Thanks luvmygoats! I LOVE Ross. Congrats on your purchases. When I lived in the midwest for training I was devastated that they did not have Ross stores. It is great to be back in CA where we do.
Thanks for telling me about your rads experience. I also have to use the aquafor and then to walk around campus to meetings after rads, when it is over 100 degrees, hence the dresses. i will NOT be wearing bras! sundress and undies only on these hot days, LOL.
I didnt know you are a nurse. Cool! You nurses are the ones who save our lives, more than the doctors. Thank you for what you do! -
@ sciencegal. I needed hair gel today and went to Ulta. I don't use make up bags, but if I did, I would have bought the one I saw in a NY minute. It said, "Natural Beauty is for Amateurs." I couldn't stop laughing.
I hope you had a great birthday, bobogirl the Gemini. My sister is also a Gemini (June 14)
Count me in as another Ross lover, luvmygoats! I have found some crazy good deals there.
