Retail Therapy
Since my dx i now treat myself to things, where as before i would think twice about spending money on myself. Do other ladies feel this way?

Hello Kaza,
Well, even though I wasn't really "diagnosed" with breast cancer, I am recently finished with my pbmx, reconstruction, oopherectomy, and now surgical menopause due to my BRCA2 mutation and strong family history. However, since all of this occurred I have ABSOLUTELY been engaging in retail therapy! I don't know if it's more due to my hormones/menopause, or filling up my time/energy with something now that my Drs appts are minimal, or what? I am also dealing with some mild depression from all of this (taking an antidepressant), so my spending could be related to that, too?
Either way, your post made me feel a little better. So thank you!
-
kaza,
Oh, yes indeed! About a week after my diagnosis I waltzed off and bought myself a $540 Ferragamo wallet. I remain unapologetic. Next to cancer surgery, retail therapy is the most effective of treatments. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
-
Oh, I love this new thread.....retail therapy....bring it on.....when I finished rads I ran to the mall for my retail therapy, but surprise , surprise, I broke down in tears and went home!!!!!! 4 months later I'm doing a lot of retail therapy again.....such a good sign, means I'm on the mend💃
What are some of your favourite stores?
Athena, I did something similar BEFORE BC.....I bought a $600 Gucci wallet .....you can imagine my purchases AFTER BC......lol -
I am extremely (!!!!!!!) practical. Two days after my diagnosis I stopped at DSW for absolutely no reason and bought a ridiculously high hot pink pair of heels. (NOT because of pinktober....just because pink was completely not practical.) I'm going to wear them when my reconstruction is all done to celebrate. Meanwhile I have been known to sit in the recliner in my pj's with them on.
I intend to land on my feet after all of this....and why not do it in fabulous shoes???? -
Dulcigirl...love your attitude and would love to see those pink shoes, I'm sure they are fabulous. I'm afraid my days of the heels are over for me......Birkenstocks all the way.....lol
-
Good for you, Dulciegirl!

I am not a jewery person. But since my diagnosis I crave beautiful jewery. I look at it and want it. I read where Ray Romano bought his wife a gorgeous necklace when she was recovery from breast cancer. No way my hubby would do that so I just dream of buying some gorgeous piece and wearing it. A friend of mine got a new very shiny Lexus and calls it her cancer car. I am hoping at some point to get a gorgeous set of pearls and wear them in honor of my journey this year.

Ladies, I'm probably the oldest here at 65 but in my head I'm 35💃 I went to Marshall's
last weekend and bought a pair of Hush Puppy boots, dark red suede, up to my knees
and a pair of dark purple jeans and a cute faux fur vest. My friend said all I need now is the love beads....lol....My DH doesn't know what to make of me these days, since BC
my clothes are getting funkier and funkier. I'm open to suggestions from you younger ones, keep in mind, the funkier the better.....lol -

-
Am adding this to my favs.
Going to knockoff tiffany sale -
I've been thinking I should have a friend change my Amazon password. I've spent so much there in the last 9 months... Maybe I'm not losing my mind after all.
-
Fredntan.......Knockoff Taffany....??????
-
I had the same question, scottiee!
-
Celine.....I bought a pair of dark purple pants.....actually get lots of compliments and they only cost $30 at Marshall's......go for it....lol
-
I bought a $400 Vitamix blender (I'm blaming it on being heavily medicated at the time) and a Cuisenart Griddler, and a Tignanello (sp) handbag. I'd wanted all for a long time and decided, if not now, when? So much for my plan to get out of debt! Next purchase will be black leather boots (and a burping, farting interactive dinosaur for my grandson).
-
OMG.....I also must have been heavily medicated because I bought a Vitamix too.....love it!!!

What is it about shopping that is absolutely soothing? If i am stressed a walk through the mall is better than Xanax. I don't necessarily have to buy anything, although I feel much more successful as a "hunter-gatherer" if I find a great bargain. My DH cannot understand it at all.
Dulcigirl, you are not alone! I bought a very impractical pair of cream leather with a fur cuff very high heel ankle boots. Not what one usually wears in Florida! So late one afternoon, when I had slipped into my shorty pajamas, I put on the boots just to see if I could actually walk in them. No one ever comes down the side of our house where there is a big picture window, consequently the blinds are never closed. The lights were on creating a real fishbowl effect and suddenly here was the UPS man looking for a place to leave a package. I have avoided eye contact with him ever since.. But I do love those boots.
Favorite stores? Loving all the extra discounts at Macy's this time of year. TJMaxx is great for bargains on cookware. Yes, I get excited about pots and pans and dishes too.
Can't get too enthused over online shopping. Not touchy-feely enough, I guess.
Biggest battle this time of year? Trying to shop for loved ones for Christmas and constantly finding things for myself! -
Jomama2 - my $400 Vitamix blender was the absolute best investment I ever made! I use it several times a day and I love it!
Almost as much as I love my new sexy bras and NYDJ (Not Your Daughter's Jeans) that I just got at Nordstrom's .
However, in terms of enjoyment, my farting dinosaur brought pleasure to many . -
I just love the lack of guilt I feel at some of my shopping. No Xanax does it quite like retail therapy. I especially like clothes. I abhor the idea of having a sense of entitlement - except when it comes to shopping after cancer. Another excuse in my mind if that since my chances of dying prematurely have gone up, I no longer have to worry about old age money. Also, if you are going to die, you want to die well dressed, damnit!
Make sure you have matching underwear.
-
1Athena1 just love it! clothes are my weakness, matching undies love m and s undies make one feel so glam! x
-

-

-
Someone asked me recently what would I choose sex or retail therapy.......guess what my answer was ladies.......lol
-
Totally agree Scottiee1, my desire for sex has gone, but shopping has replaced it, love Amazon great for xmas prezzies....... any thoughts on that bag to match your lovely red suede bootsxxx
-

today is laundry day and a BIT of housework, but of course, I must reward myself
For my efforts so off to Marshall's tomorrow and maybe I'll find that bag to match the cool boots. My DH doesn't know what to make of me these days....lol -
