no treatments after surgery
After 5 weeks of searching for info on side effects of radiation and hormone therapy and attending a cancer support group, I have decided not to have any further treatment after surgery. The side effects scared me more than the cancer returning.
If the cancer had been aggressive or metastsized, I may have gone ahead with the treatment. Since mine was caught early, slow growing and lymph nodes were clear, I feel comfortable with my decision.
I haven't asked my doctor yet, but am wondering how soon to have another mammogram?

If you don't mind my asking (if so, just ignore), do you have DCIS or invasive cancer?

suntrek - I totally support your right to decide your own course of treatment, but I am concerned that you have all the information necessary. I am not sure where Mary625 was going with her question about whether you were DCIS or IDC, but it may have had to do with the HER2+ status you provide in your diagnostic information. HER2+ status is not critical to the treatment of DCIS and testing is often not even done. However, as described on the BCO website's resources under Symptoms and Diagnosis....
"Breast cancers with HER2 gene amplification or HER2 protein overexpression are called HER2-positive in the pathology report. HER2-positive breast cancers tend to grow faster and are more likely to spread and come back compared to HER2-negative breast cancers"
Here is the specific page: http://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms/diagnosis/her2

I'm just guessing but they might want you to have a mammo every six months. You might want to try DIM as a treatment rather than nothing at all. A lot of ladies are taking it and a lot of holistic drs recommend it. I think its actually good for you and without bad SEs. I'm not as knowledgable about it as some but if you do a search for DIM you will find a lot of info about it. I have also heard that her2+ is more agressive but it also says grade 1 which is the lowest grade as far as how fast it grows (if I'm not mistaken).

suntrek, your signature line indicates that you are Stage I, so to Mary's question, that would mean that you have invasive cancer, not DCIS. And in that case, HER2 status is very important.
I completely understand why you want to avoid any additional treatments, and that might very well be the right decision for you. While I would agree with you that your cancer was caught early (i.e. Stage I) and is slow growing (i.e. grade 1), the HER2+ status does mean that you have the most aggressive type of cancer. The low grade might mitigate this - I don't know that but it's worth a discussion with your oncologist. The size of the tumor is the other critical factor - even 5mm HER2+ tumors are considered to be very serious cancers. On the other hand, a 1mm or 2mm HER2 tumor would be less worrisome. Have you discussed your risk of distant recurrence (i.e. mets) with your oncologist? Personally that's the number that would factor most into my decision on whether or not to pursue additional treatments.
If you have not had the opportunity to talk to your oncologist, you can also use CancerMath to get an idea of your risk. http://www.lifemath.net/cancer/breastcancer/therapy/index.php You can input your data and see how much difference each treatment would make to your long-term risk. I find that the Pictogram format for the results is the easiest to interpret.
As for your next mammo, I would guess 6 months.

I didn't do conventional adjuvant therapy either. Lots of alternatives out there. Done them for years.
Hang in...there are a lot of us out there.

I didn't put 2 and 2 together as I should have to know that Stage I would be invasive, not DCIS. Anyway, I know that Suntrek was asking about the frequency of mammos, and that's a question I cannot answer as I no longer have breasts. What I would like to say though is that I've not had any lasting side effects from radiation or aromatase inhibitors. I realize that I should knock wood because I could have something pop up in the future. Some people try the AI's and then stop if they experience side effects.

I did rads, but wish I didn't. I don't take any Rx meds except Vit D. I do DIM, mushrooms, juicing etc. My estrogen levels were just checked and they are practically non-existant.
