Per Rachel Maddows's heads up, here are excerpts from an op ed by Gabrielle Giffords for tomorrow's Times:
SENATORS say they fear the N.R.A. and the gun lobby. But I think that fear must be nothing compared to the fear the first graders in Sandy Hook Elementary School felt as their lives ended in a hail of bullets. The fear that those children who survived the massacre must feel every time they remember their teachers stacking them into closets and bathrooms, whispering that they loved them, so that love would be the last thing the students heard if the gunman found them.
.....
Speaking is physically difficult for me. But my feelings are clear: I’m furious. I will not rest until we have righted the wrong these senators have done, and until we have changed our laws so we can look parents in the face and say: We are trying to keep your children safe. We cannot allow the status quo — desperately protected by the gun lobby so that they can make more money by spreading fear and misinformation — to go on.
I am asking every reasonable American to help me tell the truth about the cowardice these senators demonstrated. I am asking for mothers to stop these lawmakers at the grocery store and tell them: You’ve lost my vote. I am asking activists to unsubscribe from these senators’ e-mail lists and to stop giving them money. I’m asking citizens to go to their offices and say: You’ve disappointed me, and there will be consequences.

Such powerful words. Cowardice scares the living daylights out of me. It can bring as much evil as frank psychopathy.
Edited for clarification.

A Times reader penned the following comment:
As a young, 20-something American, I am appalled, disappointed, and disgusted by this news. You have left my generation with a disaster. My family came to this country to escape violence and persecution, with the full belief that America was the ideal nation. I, and many others in my generation, partially as a result of votes such as this, no longer hold that belief. What happened to the America that my family, and so many other families, risked their lives for? What happened to the America that protects freedom--that of the constitution, and that of children and families to live lives free from violence? To say I am saddened by this news is an understatement: I am outraged.
(Will leave signature on for a new posts - how I wish psychopath Rumsfeld would see it.)

That's a very powerful op-ed. One can only hope that it gets picked up and re-printed by every other major newspaper all across the U.S. I'll bet I see it in the Toronto Star this weekend.

Shame on our elected officials. I will be writing or emailing all those who voted against.
Hugs, Susan. You are in my thoughts constantly. You are one of the toughest, most spirited people I know and I have confidence in YOU over cancer.
Prayers for all those involved in any way in the Boston bombimgs and West, Texas explosion. What horrible tragedies!
On a personal note: My chemo went well and I actually felt good enough to go see the O's play (grrrr, lose to Tampa bay) tonight. Beautiful evening to be at oriole park. -

Smiling thinking of Glenna in Camden Park - sorry your team lost.
Enjoyful - hugs. Am sure you're correct about the "cause" - tho Blue does have an interesting view on it too. I still say PHUQUE - but am thinking there are SO many treatments available - and one of the phuquers is gonna knock the crap outta da little buggers. You might wanna alert your docs the Spangled Scooter Gang is coming to next appt. Lead by a Fierce Lion. Just damn - I keep reading your "diagnosis" and can't wrap my puny mind around how it could be what it is now. Just MUST MUST MUST MUST be a way to knock out those buggers...gotta be! BTW, are you at John's Hopkins?

What a disgrace, especially for the Democrats who voted to endanger Americans! I would expect as much from extreme rightwing Repubs, but there is NO excuse for a Democrat to do this. Harry Reid needs to be run out of his leadership position asap!
