    My commute time is so long that I don't get much time with Sharon and DD.  Business travel takes away the couple of hours between getting home and bed'time.  

    Pleasure travel with the family is better, but sometimes it feels like I'm over scheduled..which reminds me of work! :-).

    Sharon just finished the taxes.  We overpaid the federal taxes by a few hundred dollars and owe a similar amount to the state...

    I am now cleaning the last piece of cast iron cookware...the dutch oven that is my avatar on here and I'm plastering the dents, dings and cracks in the house's wallboard before I paint.

    Dinner tonight will be baseball park food.  The AZ Diamondbacks are playing the Dodgers.  Sharon is a huge Diamondbacks fan.  DD is an equally huge Dodgers fan.  This game is always a fun one to watch...them... :-)

    Those look good Nancy.

    My sourdough bread making uses almost the same techniques as when I make regular white bread.  It's every slightly more dense than 'regular' bread, but not by much.

    Moon.   I very much enjoy talking with 80-100 year olds about what it was like "back then"...attitudes, how things were done, dreams, triumphs, failures, things that could have been better...all of that.

    When someone that old dies, and they had a sharp mind, I almost feel cheated.  I say "almost" because I know I may be being greedy.....If their mind is keen and their body is unable to do what they want it to do, my greed equals their purgatory...yet another thing I learned when I was 22...

    So, what you described, a 90 year old man reuniting with his wife of 63 years, is good.

    Laurie -- URGENT!  I do not recommend panko for your light chicken parm.  If you're going to bake everything together, it's possible that panko will make them soggy!  If you're going to flash fry in panko, then sauce it on the plate, it will be fine :)

    Eric, my regular sourdough recipe is much less complicated too, but I stumbled across this recipe and it got such rave reviews I wanted to try it. The thing is, Susan is right, the crumb is very nice and soft, but that's not what I was expecting. The descriptions made it sound more rustic. The flavor, however, is outstanding and the reason I will make it again.



    Bobo, rofl! As flattering and intriguing as your offer is, I fear your"outfit" would miss you terribly. But thank you, so far, it's the best offer I've had all day ;-D

    Goodness!  I miss one day of checking in and miss an hour's worth of reading!  Not to mention Michelle's fantastic news.  I expect to see the news hit the media, ICE CREAM DIET KICKS CANCER'S BUTT!!!!

    Bobo, how are you getting along?  It's good to have you reappear.

    Yesterday I made the "little ears" pasta.  I was shaping the ears when dh got home from his afternoon golf.  He pitched in and helped.  While they cooked in salted boiling water for 10 min., I sauteed fresh shrimp in EVOO and butter and minced garlic and  stirred in some jarred pesto.  Ladled in the cooked pasta with a little of the pasta water and let the shrimp and pasta cook a bit longer.  Sprinkled servings liberally with fresh-grated asiago. 

    I have more of the dough and will make up some more to dry or freeze.  My next home-made pasta attempt will be hand-rolled egg dough that is folded and cut with a knife.  Pappardelle or linguini.  According to my book on artisan pasta, the dough is the same. 

    Gosh, I'm glad I'm not allergic to gluten. 

    Linda, what about potatoes?  Can you eat French fries?  Mashed potatoes?  It's a great idea to start your own discussion forum.  I did that when I wanted feedback on oncotype numbers for Grade 3 bc.  I am Grade 3 and was afraid my oncotype number would come in high and indicate the need for chemo.  Instead I got a 9!

    We had heavy rain and thunder and lightning that began sometime before dawn.  DH and I stayed in bed until 8:30!  Today is a lazy stay-at-home day.  We'll watch the Masters golf, plus he has a recorded car race from last night.

    I'll roast a chicken for dinner.

    Minus two  Thinking of you also with this new phase of treatment.

    Linda that has got to be so frustrating for you.  Do any of the specialty dieticians have any answers for you? I guess as far as radiation goes, getting your protein through chicken and turkey is still a good source, even though it does not put weight on. Even though you are only 90lbs, if that is "normal" for you, then you may still be a very healthy and strong 90lb person. Ironically, I have a friend with IBS (does not present as such because she is very much overweight) and once a month she receives a low dose of a chemotherapy drug that helps her manage the symptoms.  I do not know the details of her treatment, just that it works for her. Seems a little extreme to me considering the side effects of chemo drugs, but I guess you do what you have to do.

    Very little sun today but no rain, so DH says that we should use the grill tonight.  Steaks and baked potato...hmmmm not sure, must attack the grocery store.

    Yes, I can eat potatoes; french fries, baked w/ lactose free margarine or mashed w/ lactaid milk & lactose free margarine.  I guess I will have to start my own forum on here.

    It is VERY frustrating for me; not knowing what to eat all the time.  I get so sick of the same foods!  Actually I have lost some weight since being dignosed.  I usually weigh about 98lbs.  No, typically I am not a strong & healthy person; have a lot of medical conditions to deal with.  I have never heard of chemo being used in the management of IBS!  Does sound extreme.  I went once to a nutrishionist but she was no help:(

    Dinner last night was tostadas with the leftover roasted chicken, topped with lettuce, pico de gallo and another perfect avocado.

    The carcasses spent the night in the oven turning into a delicious stock. Have chicken parts on the top of the stove today making even more stock. Good thing I had some stock before lunch today. My mother in law died this morning and I was able to make her son chicken noodle soup, the most restorative soup in the world.

    We will be heading to Georgia at the end of the week for her service [no day set yet] and to start dealing with the estate. My poor daughter. She has lost TWO grandparents in less than 5 weeks. She is reeling. My MIL name was/is Laurene, and I simply dropped that last e when naming my child. They shared a name and a special bond.

    Carrie, I certainly need to bake for someone besides the two of us, I certainly don't need to eat all this stuff!



    Tonight is a pan roasted pork tenderloin that is marinating in a olive oil garlic and lemon juice mixture. Sides will be creamy orzo with asparagus and parm, some fried apples and more onion rolls. Made my first ever lemon meringue pie for dessert. That was an exercise in frustration, so of course I'm going to have to make another soon to get it right. Oh well, I also made a glazed key lime bread in case the pie proves inedible.



    Oh Susan, I'm so sorry about your MIL. That is rough. My grandparents and my FIL died very close together. It was a year that left us reeling. You all have my sincere sympathies.

    Susan, I lived in Atlanta for 11 years.  I am so sorry for your loss.  I hope that the weather holds up for you

    For dinner Miralax, a ton of it, and only clear liquids since 11:00 am today.  Going for the "Big Girl" test tomorrow.  Sorry, some of you, Top Secret.  We have been sworn to secrecy. Don't want to scare the youngen's. You'll find out when you're older ( or your doc will tell you if you have a family history).  For Breakfast Versed and ?? Too bad I won't remember a thing! Hope I don't make a fool of myself and tell random people that I love them or worse.

    I fixed a nice dinner. London Broil, sweet potatoes, salad, desert....



    I had to switch gears from cooking to emergency medical.....

    I had to do abdomenal thrusts on my mom...I got it dislodged about 30 seconds before EMS got here.



    Mom says she's OK, but over her objections, I'm going to take her to the emergency dept to make sure all is OK. She's 95 next week, on Warfarin and I *really* had to squeeze her.....

    Bedo - had Propofol for my test with some inane comment about Michael Jackson.  Wishing you only the best tomorrow.  Want to hear you passed test with flying colors.

    Nancy - All sounds lovely.  Might have to go by Williams-Sonoma on Friday to see what they have.  It's a store I forget is there, not in the usual shopping area.  Have to go to gyno for yearly - yuck.

    Finally made the roasted peppers/onions with the leftover pork roast in salsa.  Yummy on flour tortillas.  DH cleaned up afterwards.  3 small bags peppers frozen.  Little soft but none spoiled.

    2nd, the pie turned out better than expected, although the meringue was a little weepy. For a first effort it was acceptable. Nobody spit it out anyway lol

    Susan, I feel for your family with these close together losses...and so especially sad for your daughter. Have a safe trip. I hope you will be able to pay attention to self-care in addition to the family needs. You have individually been through a lot this past month.

    Last night's dinner was okay...chicken scaloppine with saffron cream sauce, couscous, tuscan kale salad, carrots tarragon and parsnip cake for dessert. I was underwhelmed...maybe just too tired.



    Today I made squash barley soup and an onion, red pepper, mushroom quiche. We had the quiche for dinner with an arugula, butternut squash, red onion salad. It was such a crappy weather day, I enjoyed spending most of the day in the kitchen. At about 6 PM, there was this sudden flash of light though the west window......the SUN. It was jolting!! ;)

    Nancy... Weepy or not, sounds yummy! Love the combination of sweet & tart. Hoping your family appreciates the home-cooking, a lost art.



    Dinner for me: DH slept all day, so just cooking for me and decided on something not messy to make. I'll admit, I cheated: started with dry potato soup mix adding boiled red potatoes, cheese, some leftover sautéed red pepper. Craving baked zucchini sticks, that's in the oven. Not much, but its what I want.

    Oh, Eric, hope your mom is doing okay.....



    My stepmother is doing well after a couple of rough weeks right after her kidney surgery. She is going to leave the rehab where she's been worked hard in PT and OT so she can get home. Fortunately her advanced age is allowing for no immediate intervention on the leftover margin issues, which her doc will monitor with a CT Scan in three months.

    I am so relieved that she does not need to face chemo now in her more frail physical condition.

    Nance, lemon meringue pie can be fussy, especially in humid weather......still tastes good tho, to which your guests attested! I love a good homemade lemon meringue pie. I'll have that along with your sour dough bread please!

    Linda, one thing I could eat was a baked potato with lemon and a bit of soy sauce. The salt and flavor of the soy and the tart of the lemon tasted good.

    I cheated a bunch over the last few days - ate wheat AND sugar AND milk products - oh god, I am in SUCH PAIN.  I don't know why I do this to myself.  I really truly know better - but sometimes just miss being "normal".  Normal is so much NOT me any more.....

    Didn't find anything yet in our house/property hunting

    Bedo -- Versed!  Hooray!  Thinking of you.  Wish I could be there to make you some Indian food when you can eat it.  I have an excellent cookbook, the woman went with her spiritual leader into the kitchens of the temples.

    Nancy -- don't listen to Carberry!  Marry me!  You know that saying about the cow and the free milk.  Don't let Carberry cheapen what we have! :)

    Let's see.. what can I offer.. I will match Carberry, plus offer a weekly cleaning service.  And a kitchen helper to follow you around and clean up.  PLEASE NOTE: it will not be me.  I do not like to do dishes.

    Carole, I cannot believe you made little ears with pesto.  My great-grandma used to make that!  That sounds absolutely delicious.

    A big ribeye for dinner tonight.  I'm celebrating my WW weigh-in for April in typical WW member style, with food!  We'll cook the steak with the sear and finish in a hot oven method because we like it better that way than cooked on the grill.  I even bought baking potatoes today to go along with the steak.

    Susan, I'm sorry about your MIL.  In addition to the loss and grief, settling an estate can be a giant headache.

    Garden, wishing you a fast recovery from the ill effects you're suffering.  

    Eric, glad your mom is ok.  My mother is 90. 

    I have a beautiful and interesting new (for me) cookbook that I'm enjoying reading.  Rocco Dispirito's NOW EAT THIS.  It has wonderful photographs of the "Real Mamas of Italy."  Rocco has redone favorite Italian dishes so that a serving is no more than 350 calories.  My WW leader has been passing along recipes from this book.  I saw it and bought it.  I could have a worse addiction than buying cookbooks!
