    Why is it that pro gun-at-all-costs conservatives demand all sorts of documentation for the right to peacefully cast the secret ballot but insist on NONE to purchase a deadly weapon?

    Silly question. The answer is: in the first case, fewer democrats vote. In the second, more might die!

    In a word NO.  I find it amazing to the extreme that pro gun is so very often not really pro-life since it is so much more about what I won't allow you to interfere with where I'm concerned even if I could save lives.

    One of the differences is that the right to bear arms is specifically granted via the Constitution.  The right to vote, while implied, is not specifically granted.

    And, of course, you can block librul voters and put guns in the hands of anti-libruls.

    Rights with no obligations? That seems to be the American way.

    Too bad that clowns like Scalia interpret the 2nd amendment as the right to own a gun - it was NEVER intended that way. It was intended as a states rights issue, the right of autonomy and of self defense.

    The right to vote, while not explicit, is enshrined from the moment we say "we the People...."

    Thirteen Republican senators have pledged to filibuster a senate debate about new gun safety measures, insisting in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) that they will “oppose any legislation that would infringe on the American people’s constitutional right to bear arms, or their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance.” The threat, which Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY), Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Mike Lee (R-UT) first made last week without seeing the bill, comes just days before the body prepares to consider the first comprehensive gun legislation in the aftermath of the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. The package will expand restrictions against gun trafficking, invest in school safety and provide for universal background checks of all gun purchases.

    But one top Republican, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), is speaking out publicly against the group, questioning the wisdom of promising to filibuster legislation that lawmakers have yet to finalize:

    After Mr. Coburn was asked multiple times an identically worded question about whether he would join Mr. Paul’s effort to block gun legislation as he traveled around Oklahoma in recent days, Mr. Coburn bristled at the idea that Mr. Paul would threaten to filibuster a bill before its contents were made final.

    “Is that about filibustering a bill to protect the Second Amendment, or is that about Rand Paul?” Mr. Coburn said at a town-hall meeting at the Oklahoma Sports Museum in Guthrie, Okla., on Wednesday. “I’ve done more filibusters than Rand Paul is old,” Mr. Coburn said, but he added that he doesn’t announce such moves before he understands the bill.

    Coburn is working on compromise legislation that would expand background checks to all gun purchases, but would not require private sellers to keep a record of the transaction, which gun safety advocates say would ensure that checks are being properly conducted and allow the entire chain of custody to be reconstructed in the event the gun is later recovered in a crime.

    Should the Republicans proceed to filibuster on the motion to proceed to the gun package, Reid could take advantage of a new Senate rule “by promising each party two amendments on the legislation.” “Under that scenario, Paul and his allies would still get a chance to raise their objections on the floor for hours on end, but they couldn’t stop the Senate from starting debate on the bill,” Politico reports.

    Jackie - re: your bunny -Clarence Thomas, that useless, grey matter amputee (thanks for NOTHING Bush father) should take note. How pathetic that the only time he was heard speaking during a supreme court hearing was to make a sports joke. As a taxpayer, I want mah munnie back on that 'un!

    jackie - that is the MOST gorgeous animal I've ever seen.

    I'm giving thanks to the Mods for removing the gun toting avatar, which I still call greta.  Thank you.

    Lovely thing happened here today.  Rain.  Not snow, a little rain.  Bliss...well, not for those still tapping maple trees for sap, probably the longest season in years, but I'M READY FOR SPRING.

    also, still raspy coughing, taking everything ( but antibiotics, which make me SO SO SO sick) - it's much better, but still a cough.  I refuse to give up on Elderberry, Fire Cider ( think you have to live in new England to appreciate this one) musinex, lemon ( fresh, rinds, pulp) tea, and my latest ( reminded by a friend) gargling with warm salty water - but I am still bummed it's still raspy time...vetoed pneumonia, not much congestion left, really don't cough except when I wake up, and when I get into bed - hey, I'm allergic to my bed?  Oh, well...all suggestions ( except antibiotics) welcomedKiss

    Most folks just saying that this year the "cough" after the FLU is a doozy, and hard to get rid of.  Should Medicare get their money back for the Flu shot I hadSealed

    Hi all,

    Beautiful day here in Jersey.  Going to get the bike out for the first time since the fall. 

    DD is still having a rough time.  Hoping that medication and therapy will help.  Her wedding is scheduled for September 3, but if we don't see improvement, may have to postpone.

    Someone mentioned "saving lives."  That's what the Right speaks lf when they go anti-abortion or pro-gun...saving lives.   Speaking to the guns...if guns made United States citizens safe this would be the safest country in the world.  We don't even make the top ten safest countries in the world list according to the Global Peace Index:

    Sometimes when you think you have pretty much heard it all...along comes another zinger:

    North Carolina’s proposed, “Healthy Marriage Act,” is amending their current divorce law by extending the hold from a one-year wait to a two-year wait, before a divorce can be final.

    Yes. If you live in North Carolina, the Republican government wants all of you — your body, your religion, your voting rights, and your marital status.

    They continue to pass horrendous anti-choice laws, one of them forcing a women wanting an abortion to view an ultrasound of the fetus and be lectured on it. They go one step further into, “Are You Kidding Me Land,’ by requesting the this be done four hours before the procedure.

    Now, in the last few weeks:

    In many divorces, the spouse initiating a divorce has contemplated leaving for an average of two years before taking action. You can’t force people to love each other. And how about a marriage where one spouse is blatantly cheating. Or worse, what about a women –or man – in an emotionally abusive marriage (assuming physical abuse would be cause for exemption.) This law makes it much easier for the abusive partner to control their spouse’s life, finances and happiness for one more year.

    What is up with North Carolina?

    Explanation: Republicans gained full, veto-proof, control of the North Carolina government after the 2012 elections. They can do whatever they want. And North Carolina citizens are forced to pay for these bozos to come up with bogus, and often unconstitutional, laws. Is there some kind a weekly bill-proposing quota? Do they get paid extra?

    This two-year hold on a divorce states:

    During the two-year waiting period, the husband and wife have each completed courses on (i) improving communication skills and (ii) conflict resolution. Courses required by this subdivision do not have to be completed together as a couple.

    Given how well the NC Republicans are divorcing themselves from the Constitution, basic civil rights, and from sanity, perhaps they can take the same courses in communication skills and conflict resolution. But we’ll take the high road, and exempt them from waiting two years before leaving.

     

    Wouldn't like what I propose....totally put them on their own until they come to their senses.

    Alexandria - so sorry to hear your DD is going thru a difficult time.  I think medication AND therapy is the best option.  Also loving patience & support, and I KNOW she has that....still, hard for everyone.  This is my "personal prejudice" but I don' tthink medication alone is enough, speaking from my own experience.  I'm so grateful for the advances in medical treatment - but having an "adult witness"/therapist is so important.

    Hope YOU are getting some help too, during this difficult time.  September is far away - all best wishes for a happy, healthy spring, and HEALING.

    Jackie, I am so ashamed of having been born and raised in NC. Most of the people are loving and intelligent, but not the legislators apparently. This is worse than the Jesse Helms reigned. I didn't think it could get any worse than that.
