27 nodes and 4 years later.... LE... matching compression query.
Greetings!
I have perused the threads and figure somewhere buried in there this question may have been answered.... but...I can't seem to find it! I have had a fitting and am confused about where I seem to be right now. Today I changed my glove to a 23/30 compression, but my sleeve remains at 30/40. Since this change, my arm feels very tight and almost numb at times. It hadn't felt this way when compression matched at 30/40. So my question is this: do you think the arm and glove sleeve should match compression? Should I wait a couple of days for this feeling to hopefully right itself? This whole thing is very confusing! I feel so blessed that I had four years of lymphedema-free existence. Thank you all!
Tammy

Wishing Binney comes along or one of the other experts. If I am right, you have to have equal compression at the hand and arm or either more compression at the hand than the arm. Never less on the hand.
Binney is so good at interpreting the compression levels. I think it depends what country makes them also. It is weird that your arm feels heavy but not your hand since the change.
To play it safe, go back to your regualr old glove until we can figure it out and talk to your fitter for sure.
-
Tammy, normally you keep the higher compression in the hand so you don't trap fluid. I think the key is how you feel--it doesn't feel right, so I'd let the fitter know.
Who wanted you in a class 1 (20-30) in the hand with a class 2 (30-40) in the arm?
I just got a custom Juzo back from a new fitter, and it feels loose and the fingers are too long: arghh, adventures in compression stink. IMO.
-
Tammy, I'd say Hugz is right about this. You don't want less compression for the hand, for the same reason that you wear hand protection whenever you wear a sleeve--because you don't want to push swelling into your hand and get it "stuck" there. Do you notice any hand swelling with this arrangement? Just throwing off the delicate balance of compression could certainly affect the whole arm, which could result in your feeling of heaviness. Can you get ahold of your therapist and/or fitter and see what they have to say? Do let us know what you discover!
Hugs,
Binney -
Tammy, is this a fitter decision, or an error? Today I received two sets of sleeves and gauntlets from Brightlife Direct, both sets Juzos. One sleeve is an inch wider at the top than the other, but they have identical size tags sewn in. So, this is a factory error, and of course, I'll be calling in and sending the wrong one back, but it does remind us that manufacturing and in this case labeling errors can happen.

I think it isn't just the compression "numbers," but the TYPE of compression. To me, the circular knit in the Juzo soft sleeve seems more "forgiving" and less compressive than the flat knit of the Juzo expert. For example, I have a custom Class 1 Juzo expert axilla-to-fingertip all-in-one garment. The Expert axilla/fingertip is 18-21 mm, but I swear it feels tighter at the elbow than my custom class 1 Juzo soft sleeve (officially 20-30 mm).
My old therapist said she often pairs a class 1 Juzo expert glove (officially 18-21 mm) with a class 1 Juzo soft sleeve (20-30 mm) , and patients usually don't have a problem. This has been my experience: Even though my hand is my "problem area", most days I can wear a custom class 1 Juzo expert glove with a custom class 1 Juzo soft sleeve. If I am doing something like distant walking where my hands are dependent, I do wear a class 2 Juzo expert glove (23-32 mm) with a class 1 Juzo soft sleeve. KS1

Carol57 --- Interesting about the Juzo sleeves you just got. I had a custom sleeve made in February that was supposed to be a duplicate of a sleeve I had made in August. Sitting side-by-side, it was about 2 inches shorter and looked squatter than the August one. However, at the silicon band, they were identical. I put it on, and it fit, and it seems to be doing the job.
I also recently got some off-the-shelf Juzo soft knee highs. Looking at them, they also seemed squatter and much shorter than any of my previous pairs, but again at the band, they were the same. When I put them on, they seemed the right length. Weird. KS1

Comingtoterms -- I can't imagine wearing a class 3 glove ... it would be really hard to move the fingers. Are you talking about going down a class in the sleeve (to class 1) or going up to a class 3 in a glove? KS1
-
KS1, the mis-marked sleeve won't stay up, so it's clearly too big. And although one is Juzo Varin and the other is Juzo soft (I wanted to try the Varin; I already have a soft), the online sizing charts are identical. I'll be astounded if someone at Brightlife tells me that one of these sleeves is supposed to be an inch wider than the other. Regarding your experience, you would think that if a sleeve maker changes fabric to the point that a product is visually a different size, they would drop in a little note with the packaging to let you know that the fit still works, just looks a little different!

Carol, I have both Varin and Soft. Varin is always tighter than Soft especially around the elbow for me which is great for me.
Varin is a stiffer fabric which is not as forgiving, which is better containment for me but soft stretches out better. In that case my LEist would say to wear the Varin for better containment. In fact she whole heartedly dislikes circular knit which my Varin and Soft are. She claims they only CONTAIN size where the flat knit helps MOVE the fluid. Sheesh kabob! I am getting off topic.
Your right carol about the sizing chart being identical. Its nonsense because they do fit so different. The Soft slips at my elbow.
To throw a wrench in....the Varin with the shoulder strap fits in length better than the banded Varin on me. Go figure. The banded Varin is always a half inch longer. I need ready made short as possible. Victoria does to. -
KS1,
This whole situation has been bouncing around since last Thursday when I was diagnosed. I returned to the fitter yesterday because the fingers in my glove seemed too big. As it turns out, the size S glove was in the size XS box. So I had been given a glove that was too big for me. We tried the 30/40 compression in the XS glove and it seemed rather tight. I then tried the 20/30 and to quote Goldilocks: "It was just right!" I kept the 30/40 sleeve that I had on. After I had this 'mismatch' on for a while, my arm started to get heavy and feel numb. Now I am reading that having a tighter sleeve with a lesser glove is the polar opposite of what I need? Ugh. Scary thing: this is the medical supply store that was recommended by the Cancer Center I am a patient of.

Compression is very confusing, and it's dispensed by "fitters" who have no true certification.
What's being discussed here are the different fabrics: flat weave vs. circular--flat weave contains better and is stiffer, and circular stretches more
Compression numbers and what they mean: any garment made in Germany has a European compression class which is different than the US one, yet a European compression class 1=18-22 mm, while a US is 20-30 mm. I have asked the garment makers if I should go by the amount of compression or the class, and have not gotten a straight answer.
For example--a custom Juzo 3021/"expert" is compression class 1, but as it is made in Germany, it's 18-22 mm
And just for confusion--I've gotten these for years, and been told by my CLT instructor who visited the Juzo factory, that they are supposed to go in the dryer, the current tag says no dryer, yet the material hasn't changed and the old tags say dryer.
And I just went on the Juzo site, and for 3021, they say machine wash and dry....
And I just called Juzo, and they say the label is mistaken, that all their garments are machine wash and dry and the drying is important...
So, if I didn't wear them for years, and went to the CLT class, how would I know this?????
-
Kira, So why the heck doesn't Juzo put in a note in each package saying that they are dryable and the label is mistaken.
They are always so specific on how to care for them ( "do this, don't do that")in the manual that comes with them.
They go to great lengths to put in the inspection notes in our package, what's one more adddition to the note. Sheesh kabob again!
What is your opinion on flat versus circular weave? Which do you feel does the correct job? -
Also, wouldn't it be helpfu, if on the buy-it-yourself sites, like Brightlife and other online vendors, they specified flat vs. circular for each product?
-
Carol, Next time I call Brightlife I will mention it to them to list flat and circular knit. They listed the colors better when I mentioned it to them. To my knowledge, they only carry one sleeve in flat and unfortunately it doesn't fit me. You can search "flat" by using the words " flat knit sleeve"or something like that to see the product. They have flatknit gloves.

Thanks for taking the mystery out of the Juzo washing/drying instructions! I follow the labels and machine wash/dry my regular Juzo soft, regular Juzo expert, and Juzo soft silver (knee highs), but do NOT machine dry my Juzo silver expert gloves.
Maybe my not machine drying the Juzo silver expert gloves is why the silver fingers seem to stretch out more over the course of the day than the "regular" expert fingers.

KS1--this is a glove from a new fitter, and I really think it's too loose, and I'm finding this SO depressing--getting the glove, wearing the glove, freaking out about the laundering directions, and now having to have this new fitter check the fit--which I think is just not right, and try again.
From the Juzousa site:
http://www.juzousa.com/Common%20Questions
Why is it okay to machine wash/dry Juzo compression garments?
Without daily machine laundering, your garment is more likely to stretch out, over time. Other brands can only be hand washed and hand dried. Because of Juzo’s garment features, all Juzo garments can be machine-washed and machine- dried on a low-heat setting.
Latex Free- Juzo only uses Lycra® compression fibers. Lycra® does not breakdown from heat and is the highest quality synthetic compression fiber.
FiberSoft™ - Our Lycra® compression fibers are covered. This protects the garment and increases garment durability.
Juzo Silver: expert is wash and dry: http://www.juzousa.com/Product.aspx?menu1=Lymphedema%20Garments&menu2=Gauntlets&product_class=SG1&group_model=3020SV
Juzo silver strong: doesn't say wash and dry, but the national rep I talked to said ALL Juzo garments are wash and dry, and I asked her why my label changed, and she had no answer.....

LE gloves: expensive and you never wanted to have to wear them, and why can't they get the fit right the first time????
-
Intresting that everybody is having issues with there new Juzo garments. I got my new ones the end of Jan. They are longer and bigger than the last two sets I have gotten. I guess I should have sent them back.
-
Sigh, this is from a while back. I have been happy with fits for the sleeve lately though. http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/64/topic/779785?page=1#post_2764370
