Bird Watching Club

It's that time of year again!  Red-winged blackbird (juvenile) has been visiting the yard.

Nesw, we have Robins around now but I've not seen a Red Winged Blackbird yet.  We are due for a storm over tonight and tomorrow........the poor birds who have ventured north.  I hope they've arrived with lots of fat reserves.  I know I have lots of fat reserves.  :P

Have seen several flocks of geese migrating north since last week.  Still no robins but there are years I never see any.

Marple - Auntienance and I had a discussion about bluebird houses.  Do you have to (how to put this delicately) have to do in the male sparrows that try to occupy them?  My DH did that for a year and now flatly refuses so sparrows living in my bluebird house for several years.

Marple - That's what I thought, some variety of dove.

Well we have Black Ducks here (Ontario) but your's duck doesn't look quite the same.

Mostly just around San Diego county...we have ocean, mountains, deserts and more.

I think many birds migrate through here

could the black duck be a melanistic variety of some common species, analagous to black jaguars or black leopards?

Beautiful sunny (but very chilly) morning in northern NJ. Heading out to my favorite wetlands and hoping for some early spring sightings, but I'll be happy to just be outside.

I was just watching a pileated woodpecker foraging among the wild grape vines on the native pin cherry trees.   Maybe a few dried up grapes!  

It used to be fairly rare to see flocks of Canada Geese thirty years ago.  Now they are so plentiful they damage crops and create a real problem on golf courses and lawns where people's properties back on to the waterways.  What are those white ones Lisa?
