    Nancy- Yum to your breakfast.  Very nice of your DH.  I wonder if you could buy the spice on line and save yourself the drive?

    Carrie- I agree, your dinner sounds like it was good!

    Minus two- I think every other meal is a good ratio :)

    Dinner tonight is chicken pot pie, DS1 requested this one.  I am fighting this cold off with all I am worth, so far I am winning.  Dragging a bit but I keep moving.  The boys are giving me a run for my money.  DS1 is being super naughty, trying to sneak cookies, lieing about it etc.  DS2 tripped this morning and did a face plant on the couch.  Somehow when he slid down it pulled his top lip up and ripped the skin where his lip and gum meets...you know that little piece that holds the two together? (yes stick your tongue up there to feel...) he ripped that open and was bleeding all over the place.  Every day is an adventure huh?

    So it is almost 4:30, close enough to 5.  I just poured a glass of wine.  Cheers!

    Slowly regaining my balance here. This weekend the kid, her partner, and the two of us had a really nice dinner together. The dinner was a simple chicken, chorizo and rice dish; classic one pot meal. What was important was that we were all together and could tell Dan stories and grieve together. The kid made a cake for the wedding on Sunday and helped with the clean up. The partner carried furniture around to help us set up. Sunday was all about finishing the house prep for the wedding. And the cake, of course.

    Monday night I made my lentil-vegetable soup and last night was samosa meat with lentils and rice. Lots of lentils for some reason.  Tonight I am making an Asian-style soup with pork. Winter is letting go here. Today was sunny and almost warm. If you look closely, some of the bushes are starting to get that very light green at the tips of their branches.

    Will try to post a picture of the cake, and maybe one of the dining room all ready to start the wedding event.

    DH requested pasta for tonight's dinner.  So we'll have Dreamfield's linguini with Sal & Judy's Heart Healthy spaghetti sauce with some Italian sausage added.  (To prevent it from being too healthy?)  Grated parm-reg.  Tossed salad with lemon juice for my dressing.  I'm drawing heavily on exercise points for today's WW allotment.

    Making a big pot of broccoli cheese soup, America's Test Kitchen recipe.  Soup weather will soon be over.

    Just gorgeous Susan!



    Well since I wasted most of the day grocery shopping and hunting for fenugreek (which I did find), tonights dinner is hot ham and cheese sandwiches, which I had frozen, and coleslaw. So the Ethiopian stew gets made tomorrow.



    Laurie, since the recipe was from the penzey's catalog, the logical thing would have been to order the spice from them. However, I am notoriously unable to delay gratification, especially where food is concerned.

    Susan, good to hear from you.....Lovely photos...and impressed that "the kid" could make that cake.....genetic pre-disposition obviously.



    Laurie, you just never stop having raucous fun up there!! Boys! ;) Hope you can continue to keep that illness at bay.



    Carrie....your steak sandwiches sounded so yummy. I could really go for something like that right now!

    Skipping dinner since I had a friend over for a late lunch...made a mushroom, spinach, onion, and roasted tomato quiche, served with arugula, cranberry, walnut salad...and the parsnip cake for dessert....sort of a cross between a spice cake and carrot cake. I really enjoyed the ginger cream cheese icing on it. Since DH had a late afternoon meeting,(which will morph into dinner) I figured I could skip eating after so much lunch (except for the chocolate I am now munching on with green tea...the tea erases the chocolate, right?).



    Special, I loved your luncheon menu! I actually wrote you that two days ago but it evaporated.



    Nance, my friend who was here today makes pasta using her cuisinart for it....are you more authentic in your floury approach? Your meals since you've returned home sound wonderful. I was also going to steer you to Penzeys for the fenugreek.....before learning about your need for immediate gratification. ;) Eager to hear about how that turns out....

    Lacey, I use my kitchenaid. I've done it by hand, but if I use the mixer it lets me control the ingredients a little easier.

    OOOH - Nancy - I will have to read thru the Penzey's online recipes.  They sound good what I glanced thru.  I'd be sunk if I ordered the catalog.  Used to get King Arthur Flour (back in the day b4 much online) and probably good I don't get it any longer.  You'd of thunk that the essential chili store Pendery's here in Ft. Worth would have some good online recipes.  NOOO.  Had to basically make up my own.  Never used a recipe using fenugreek.  I wouldn't know where to find it locally except at Pendery's or maybe Central Market.  Hope your stew turns out to be everything you are anticipating it to be.  I think I found a Penzeys in Arlington.  Not close but closer than Dallas or Houston.  May need a roadtrip with DD soon.

    Susan - the pictures are lovely.

    Special K - You win the award for energizer bunny this week.  WOW!

    Laurie - Glad you're winning the battle of the cold.  Mine is slowly fading into the sunset.

    Tonight will be leftover enchiladas whenever DH gets home (off work about 9P) and some salad for me.  I think DH thinks most anything green is a plot except for his belived brussel sprouts.  Yuck.  My lunch today was some goat cheese, 1/2 tomato (hard as a rock from Cent. Mkt) and some multigrain crackers.

    Carole - You're right about soup weather though I have been known to cook bean soup in the summer esp. since I can make sev. meals of it.

    I have to spend time tomorrow cleaning goat barn.  One set of mom/babies going to outside pen tomorrow for the day.

    Laurie Keep fighting that cold, I have confidence you will win. I think the kids are probably just like us and tired of the winter, I think thats why they invented spring break, to help everyone re-focus.

    Made rotini with crumbled sausage and sauce. Added a can of diced tomato with zesty green chilis. Hubby was more than pleased with the spiciness of it....too much for me.  Also roasted asparagas...that was my treat.

    Susan Such an elegant cake and dining room.  Love all the white roses.

    Morning everyone!  Haven't been on in a while and this thread moves so quickly it's hard to keep up...I'll have to go backward and read when I have time!  Hope everyone is doing well and looking forward to Spring!

    I don't know how I did it, but I managed to dodge the stomach flu that my BF brought down from SC!  He was sick as a dog when he arrived and I took care of him...thought I would be next, but it's been a week and nothing, so guess I'm safe.

    We went out to Grande Luxe Cafe yesterday and had a nice lunch, so dinner last night was just snacks and a bad movie....The Master....don't bother unless you need to fall asleep...lol!

    Tonight he has requested pasta with sauce...now that's easy!  He likes everything I cook, which makes me wonder what he was getting before...lol!

    Kaara- Glad you dodged BF's stomach flu!  I bet it's nice to have your dinners appreciated.  So glad things are going well, you always seem super busy!

    Susan- The cake and roses are gorgeous!  I bet it was a wonderful day. 

    Today was very busy.  I watch my neighbors daughter who is 11 three days a week.  Today she had early release so she was here by lunch time.  I had some huge pieces of paper and the boys traced themselves and decorated them with faces etc- hair with string, it got kind of nutty.  They are now taped to my wall (???!!!!)  Then I finally did the salt clay dough and they made their creations and we baked them for three hours till they were hard then they painted them.  We did simple slice and bake sugar cookies and they decorated those.  I am pooped.  They all had a great day.

    So I am making a super easy dinner tonight.  Steak on the grill which DH will cook when he gets home, cous cous and pea pods.  Early bed time for the boys tonight.  Hopefully I am smart enough to follow suit and not stay up too late with a book.

    laurie - on man, I remember those days!  My children are 18 months apart - like a bad set of twins!  Sounds like you were busy but also had fun, and now I want a cookie!  It is funny - my kids are in their 20's now and I long for the days when their problems were small and life was fairly uncomplicated, and I always knew where they were! 

    kaara - I feel ya on the illness dodging - DD had to go to the urgent care on Sun. with acute bronchitis, she was actually gasping for air when she coughed and had a 103 temp.  I stayed in her room with her because she was scared - I can't believe I did not get sick!  I have been doing laundry and washing my hands, sterilizing all the telephones and common surfaces in the house like I'm possessed!

    Tonight's dinner was the 6 ounce sirloin at Texas Roadhouse along with caesar salad and baked sweet potato.  The steak was just as good as the filet I had in the Japanese restaurant on Sunday.  And at $8.99, how can you beat it?  Cooked to perfection!  And I ate every bite, most of the salad and half the potato...yum!

    My daughter surprised us this morning around 10, so she and I went for mani/pedis while my blood counts are still good.  We had a good time and then brought Subway home.  I'm becoming the queen of fast food, although my 6" wheat sub loaded up with roast beef, provolone and lots of veggies wasn't too naughty.

    This is my last week of being able to eat "fattening" food without gaining much weight [compared to my normal look at food and gain.] I am using these last few days to eat some things that will be off the list soon. Tonight was a grllled burger on homemade rolls, a vinegar-based cole slaw and onion rings. Little skinny onion rings. Yum! Will have to eat more carefully tomorrow though.

    I want to eat Carole's soup at the table at *Susan*'s  kid's house and I'll have whatever you're having for wine laurie.

    Then I want to go to the Luvmygoat's goat barn.

    I am at my wit's end with this innocent faced monster. Chew! Chew! Chase the cats! Run in circles! Beg! Rip up my new dog coat! Grab underwear, run away!! Oh, Oh gotta go outside Now! we're going for a walk, hopefully that will wear her out. She weighs about 5 pounds. chahuahua+ traveling salesman

     



    Can't do it! Oh well, I guess she'll have to be my new picture avatar, that I can do!

    Susan, do you bread them? What do you use? I'm enamored of the crispy, thin, more like tempura but not exactly, kind. Some places call them onion straws. For the life of me, I can't replicate the recipe. Also, are you dieting or do your food restrictions have something to do with your treatments?



    Michelle, really glad your appetite has returned!



    The Ethiopian braise was really good. I cooked some pasta to serve with it and a wedge salad with homemade thousand island dressing. DH loves that dressing. I do believe he would eat it with a spoon if I didn't keep an eye on him.

    Luv - go ahead & send in your name to be on the Penzey's catalog list.  If you get them by mail, there's usually a coupon for a free something.  And regardless of the dates, my Penzey's in Houston says they understand people live a long way away so the coupon's never expire.  I think it's free cinnamon this time.

    Penzey's recipes & tips are fantastic.  And the stores....oh my.  Can't remember where you are in Texas, but definitely worth a road trip.  There's one in Austin too.  Same for all the rest of you.  If you can get to a Penzey's, it's heaven.

    Wow, everyones cooking up a storm it all sounds so yummy. And all you southerners, boo to you. It was up to 40 degrees this week, then back down to 12 like normal. It's cold. Anyone get to see the comet? Too much cloud cover here.

    Supper yonight eas one of the freezer meals. Smoked mozzarella and tomato chicken and pasta. I thawed out the seasoned chicken, sauteed it, added in the cooked pasta and, supper. And it was really good. So far, the only one I didn't like was the hamburger. That was too salty. So next time ill cut it back. I will try to make the crockpot meal this weekend, when my husband is home to help eat it. The pasta meal was enough for at least two hungry people, and that was only half the normal recipe.

    Felt a bit upset, I needed to Ho for a.blood test and port flush. Turned out.I needed magnesium again. Sigh. Oh well. At least that's all i needed. To everyone, much love.

    I don't know if I posted the "rice bowl" that DD **LOVES**.  If not, I'll post it.  It has a fair amount of olive oil in it so the rice is stickey enough for chop sticks...and there's a fair amount of rice vinegar in it, so it's got some tang to it.  I'm still amazed that 2 onions can go into it and it not have a strong onion flavor.

    Susan, what kind of cake is that?  It looks great. I've not made a cake (other than cheese cake) before and it's something I'd like to try. 

    Did I miss the Ethiopian recipe?  Before it got so busy around here, I had been working on some (inspired by Apple) Middle Eastern recipes that are turning out pretty well.  Now that things are settling down, I'm going to start back up on them...they have some very interesting flavors.

    A couple of weeks ago, I discovered that there is a Penzey's store about a mile from a REI and an all organic food co-op--which are all about 15 miles from the house.  Looked at kyaks, bought a pair of trail running shoes in my size (size 14 EEEE), spices and a bunch of chicken and lamb...all in all a good day! :-)

    My 95 year old mom is going to need her deep brain stimulator battery pack/pulse generators replaced.  it's a 45 minute out patient surgery to do that, but I'm sure they are going to be extra cautious and do lots of tests to make sure that everything will be OK.  She has what is called essential tremor and the implants are absolutely amazing.  The first time they turned them on and mom's hands stopped shaking, she had tears of joy....

    Eric.  Please repost noodle bowl!  I have my repetoire that I depend on in order to make easy meals to get through the work week ( I take it with me as I travel) and I would love to have something for dinner. (lunch and BF always oatmeal, cheese sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, clementines or other fruit,  mason jar salads and yogurt and setzer water)  Thanks!
