Starting Chemo February 2013
Comments
-
LisaMM - yep - I finished Chemo #2. I got the neulasta - today. My bloodwork was good - so the doctor took it from 6 mg to 3mg shot. So far - so good, but as we know - chemo and neulasta shows it true colors about 2 days later for some of us. Thanks for the good vibes. Thank goodness - this show is moving long.
-
My first chemo was actually a bit of fun. My husband and sister were my entourage, so we had some kidded around a lot. We finally convinced my husband to go back to work, so the room was less crowded for the nurse, the pharmacist, the social worker, the financial consultant and others to come and talk, and talk, and talk. I was worn out by the end not from the chemo but from the endless talking! But that's ok, they were just doing their jobs and they were very friendly and helpful. The nurse explained everything she gave me and I had no pain at all when she inserted the needle into the port. I did use the lidocaine ahead of time, though. I took a Claritin today in preparation for my Neulasta shot tomorrow. Can someone remind me: Do I take that for 4, 5, or 6 days following? Thanks for the good thoughts and good wishes. I am trying to get the March thread going but it doesn't seem like we have many March chemo babes.
-
Liffeybloomer- I took the Claritin the day before, the day of, and for 4 days after the first time around. Got pretty achy for the 3 days following the injection (Friday, Sat., & Sun). by Monday I felt normal again. This time I started the Claritin on Monday and daily until I don't feel the achiness again. Thought maybe if I had more of a level built up I may not get as much achiness. We'll see!
kkmom- This show can keep moving on! Glad to hear bloodwork is good!

I soo hope that I don't have to deal with my period anymore. I haven't waxed my eyebrows lately cause I figured what's the point they're going to fall out soon anyway but now after seeing they may be the last to go, I really need to get busy on them.
My wig arrived today...so bring it! I'm ready now. -
iamnancy-on the nose bleeds-I live in a dry climate and I get them a lot anyway, but they started a few days ago. I have always used a little drop of neosporin on a Qtip or vasoline to help give my nose a little mositure-that helped this time too.
Some ladies talked about not being able to sleep with the steroids. My MO gave me some ativan to help with that and it really helped.
I used the cold caps and a little ativan with them too! I didn't feel any pain from the caps. The first one was cold, but then I really didn't feel anything. I was just cold, but I wrapped myself in a heated blanket and I brought a heating pad and I wasn't cold until I had to pee. Fingers crossed on hair!!!...have my 2nd round on Monday, the 4th. Still have the hair.
For those who haven't started. I do not know if it gets worse with each infusion, like a cumulative effect, or if each one can be different. But I have to say, the worst for me was stomach upset and some headaches. I have worked out, worked and been mom and wife for the nearly the last three weeks. I was so freaked out before and soooo relieved the night I went to sleep on my 1st chemo day. It is wasn't that bad!!!! Really!! But everyone is different. Once you are doing it, you are DOING it and getting through it!!! That means it will come to an end soon enough!

I am one of new badies and brand new in this forum. Diagnosed a month ago with IDC 3cm, looks like lymph nodes are not involved. I am going to have chemotherapy before a lumpectomy. My onc said that i will start with doxorubicin/cyclophosphamide once in two weeks. I am a nurse working in a nursing home. I am wondering if I will be able to work.
-
Anaida,
Welcome - I started chemo back at the beginning of February and I have read so many post of women who go to chemo - take a period of time off - like maybe 3 to 5 days off and they are back to work. Chemo effects everybody differently. I retired from teaching two years ago after 32 years in education and until my diagnosis in December - I had been working office jobs. I do not presently work - but I would give anything if I was still working - my life went from 99 miles an hour to now about 3 miles an hour. Work can be a place of refuge where you are in charge - not cancer.
-
RdRunner and DiZZyMom - so glad you brought this up! I was wondering, too. I started the same day of my first round and after a "normal" flow, spotted for another week. I charted before I got pregnant, and so far have seen no signs that my body is doing anything "cycle-y", but wondered if it would come back or not.
The PA asked me about it at my pre-chemo visit on Monday, and said not to throw away all the feminine products in the house yet. ;/
Guess when the MO said "menopause" side effects, I just assumed she meant all of them.
And - yes! WHY aren't the leg hairs falling out? Come on!
I'll keep you posted! -
Well, I must be the odd ball, because in addition to my hair falling out in clumps today, I am also having some loss of brows, lashes and you know where hair. But no loss of arm pit or leg hair (I put off shaving them while I was in my chemo nadir). Go figure- the hair you want falls out and the hair you don't want stays in!
-
going for second round of chemo today. One week behind thanks to by 10 day hospital stay. Will get the shot this time and hope it helps. I think I'm more worried this time then I was the first. I am taking the steroid drug the day before the day of and the day after and it is causing me extreme insomnia. Last night it was 3:00am before I could sleep. That was after taking an ambian and two hours later taking lorazapam. So I am going into chemo today with very few hours sleep. I took my first 2 at 8:00 am and second 2 at 5:00 yesterday. Maybe I need to bump them up earlier. Any suggestions??
-
Tangles- good luck to you today, I will be hoping for an easier cycle for you this time!
Anaida- our meds are a little different & everyone reacts differently . I am also a nurse and I just wanted to let you know I haven't missed any work- yet, other than the days of my chemo. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
Welcome to our group, you'll find lots of info here!
Regarding the hair loss- I had major head hair loss on day 13 after first tx, along with alot of thinning down south. I shaved my underarms & legs on Tuesday which was the day before my 2nd tx & there hasn 't been any growth underarm & just a tiny bit of stubble on my legs today. As far as the lashes & brows, they're hanging in there but I have noticed a loose hair here & there. It prob won't be too long until they're gone too.
Today is day after Neulasta, so far not as achy as last time.
Hoping everyone has a great weekend! -
No chemo for me this Wednesday.. infected tooth that has to come out next week. Not sure how far we have to push no.3 back at this point. Really bummed.
-
went in for a ct of the heart/chest and it came back fine, today is day 10 out of my first treatment and I cant get off the couch which is a first for me, that and weird tiny bumps on my hand. Since I've become a germaphob I'm thinking maybe its from huge amounts of hand sanitizer
-
I usually follow and post in January 2013 chemo group, but occasionally look here since I started chemo on January 31st!
melody46 - about a week after AC#2 I noticed a skin rash on my left wrist - no tenderness, no itching. Little bumps appeared next to the first area - it's about two inches long. I also thought it might be due to hand sanitizer - which I'm now trying to cut back on. My oncologist said that it might be a reaction to chemo, but he wasn't sure. At first I put Neosporin on it, but he suggested lotion for that area after he examined my very dry hands -I've had unusually dry hands since starting chemo. Now, two weeks later, the area seems to be drying up!
Best wishes to all, Martha
-
rdrunner: sorry about that. Hope it all gets fixed so you can get this chemo over and done with! Good luck!
Martha: I too bounce back and forth between Jan. and Feb. boards. Nice to see you at both!
-
Hi ladies, I started my period and my mom is saying I shouldn't use tampons. Has anyone else heard that? My MO didn't say anything.
-
TCH was on Monday Feb 25 th neulasta shot on Wed. Was fine. Then Thursday like a sledge hammer. In bed now for 3 days. I finally took a shower and am drinking but still very tired. Not used to Being in bed all day. Very little appetite. I hope this passes soon temp around 98.3-99.5. Should I forced myself. I've never been so lethargic
Due for Herceptin on Monday so I'll see the onco. Hope I have more energy by then
Thx for any info. This is the first day I could post -
You are getting the same Chemo as me. I got my second round yesterday and got the shot today. Went out for lunch and to walgreens & feel fine. I remember my first one I was Ok the day of Chemo and 3 1/2 days after it hit be. I was in bed about a day and half or two days then came out of it. For me I took a turn for the worst a few days later as I DI NOT get that shot so I ended up in the hospital for 10 day. I hope to not have that happen with this shot this time. Keep a close watch on you temp and call if it gets over a 100. I know my Doc said this is a strong Chemo we are going through but I will take two days in bed versus 10 days in the hospital anytime. Good luck to you! I'm just excited to say I am 1/3 of the way done with the chemo!!
-
Thx was fine Tuesday Wed then Thursday it hit. Drinking and watching my temp. 86.3-99-5. Trying to drink. I hope Monday is easier. 2nd )Herceptin
Thx again -
Really not liking thus neulasta ache! Tsking claritin & tylenol 1000 mg as often as possible, heating pad helps too! Not helping that I have to work nightshift this weekend. I will have to work the weekend every other tx, so I might as well pull up the big girl panties & suck it up. Beginning to wonder what it would feel like without the claritin & tylenol-yikes! I just keep trying to think that after this passes I'll only have to do it 4 more times, then I get a nice little vaca before rads! I think I can, I think I can!
-
Melody - I heard you shouldn't use tampons because of a greater risk of infection - maybe you should call doc and ask - I am way beyond periods at my age.
Tangles - glad you are feeling fine this time - hope thats how I do this time - 2nd chemo on Wednesday..
LisaMM - wow after my 1st chemo I was laying around the next 5-6 days - no way could I work.. you are really doing great!
-
LisaMM - Hang in there - it will get better.
Had my second round of chemo on Wednesday - I got the neulasta shot on Thursday, but the doctor reduced it from 6mg shot to a 3mg. My bloodwork was good after the first chemo. I am taking the clarintin and it has been much better - but right now - I have a lot of fatigue - like I would love to just sleep, of course, no appetite and I feel so depressed. I wonder if the depression is worsened with the steroids I take the day before, day of and day after chemo - the little green pills?
-
Had my 2nd dose of tc on Thursday but dr didn't give me neulasta because my WBC was very high. I have to admit i don't have bone pain but I'm scared of it going down too low next week. Just keeping my fingers crossed.
Glad to read that everyone is doing pretty good.

I know this sounds strange but besides all the physical SEs, I find myself obsessing over what people would look like if they were bald. I am not really nervous of losing my hair; I already shaved it. But when I watch tv, I find myself thinking, I wonder what she would look like bald. I am a strange girl!
-
Wildyshel.. I look like an Easter egg lol. You will be fine re your hair and just remember its going to grow back!
-
I sometime think we start wondering about things that are a new experience for us as a way of dealing with situations we never had to worry about. When I was first dx I couldn't stop looking at womens breasts on tv and trying to imagine myself without them. It suddenly hit me how our society is so full of boob worship. This passed after I realized I am the same beautiful woman with or without boobs. For me, it's just a way with sorting out my feelings and processing. I went through the same stage with wigs, wondering who had natural hair and who was wearing a wig. I saw a woman at the hospital with the exact same wig as mine (trust me, worse than wearing the same dress lol) and realized that it just looked like hair-not a wig! Now I seem to be thinking about effects of radiation and possible lymphedema but I don't see how I'm going to sort that one out other than reading, and unfortunately I'm not reading too many positive things about this possible SE.
-
slv58 - I find myself looking at people all the time now wondering who has a wig and who has real hair - that is somehting I never thought about or noticed before ..
-
I guess because we didn't have to before
but we shall prevail and learn from our new expeiences
-
Martha323, I have the exact same thing with my hands! Little bumps on left hand, not itchy or sore at all and extremely dry hands and nails. Plus my eyelids are always a little puffy and my eyes a bit red. Will have to mention this to oncologist although I'm not really bothered by it. What cream did you use?

Diagnosed in December 2012 following clear mammogram, ultrasound, and micoscopic reivew of drainage in Febuary 2012 of same year. I had a lumpectomy but cells found beyond the margins so one week later left partial radical mastecotmy. Cancer was found in blood vessels and lymph vessels but not to lymph nodes. Radiation only became chemo then radiation. I started chemo beginning of January with plans to take a few days off during chemo then go back to work on flex schedule. Did I say I have the best supervisor in the world? Well, here we are in March. After two debilitating chemo cycles, my chemo protocol was changed. I am now on cytoxin and adriamycin. Side effects were not as severe but I did get a respiratory infection and am still down for the count watching that temp, praying it won't hit 100.5. So I am like what the H***. Lost 40 pounds, can't work, can't sleep, toes and now fingertips are numb, no taste, blah, blah, blah. Steroids are making me nuts. And I look like a picasso painting. But I take pride knowing I look like paintings that command record numbers on the auction block
