Luv - I've seen a couple of the bacon shows, fascinating.  Today on the chew I saw part of the show - it looked like Michael Symon was rendering bacon in the oil that he was using to fry the chicken.  I'll have to go back and look at it.

Michelle, yay for your timing on gettin' out a here! And enjoy your cancer free Hawaiian zone....let the DF folk work on your plan while you relax, and do all those neat things you mentioned. Happy trip to you both!

Laurie, I was only half listening to the chicken bacon effort, but heard something about using lard to fry it (really?!), and at the end when they ate it, you could hear a distinct crunch, and bacon was sprinkled over it, making it even more crunchy! I bet you can bet it online.

I do hope that your DH gets home before the storm, so you aren't snowed in solo.....not something you need at the end of a solo week! I'm happy for you that you have grandparents around for a bit of relief tomorrow. Happy Shopping! Love that you are already outfitting the camper. :) By the way, what is a slider (if that's even the correct word)?

Carrie - I winged it and put several recipes together.  I rimmed glasses with honey then dipped in graham cracker crumbs.  Read not to skip the crumbs and glad I didn't. Mixed birthday cake vodka (chilled), Rose's lime juice, pineapple juice and a splash of heavy cream.  Tasted and added/adjusted as I went along.  Found several recipes calling for KeKe Beach Key Lime Liqueur, Licor 43 (vanilla liqueur) neither of which I could find in the one liquor store I went to. Lucky they had the birthday cake vodka.  I have since read its even better with Whipped Vodka (ala whipped cream).  Can also use vanilla vodka in a pinch. Pinnacle makes oodles of different flavors even I think a key lime.  They were yummy for a treat.  Food Network has a recipe that I kinda followed but I think I used a bit more than the 6 TBS of vodka they called for.

Laurie - hope your DH makes it in b4 the storm.  I know you heat with wood, yes. That's the one thing I worry about getting snowed/iced in is power. My DH works 45 minutes from us so I am the weather worrier as I don't want to be here alone.  He has hotels close by at least to take shelter.  Congrats on the new camper.  We tent camped when I was a child and loved it even though I don't know how my parents' backs survived sleeping bags.

Nancy - Congrats on the negative mammo results.

Carole - I would love to have your bread starter recipe, too.

Weather Channel has named the winter storm Nemo.

    Michelle,

I don't think you could have timed your departure any better if you had planned to avoid the storm!! Enjoy your trip and let those Docs spend your time away figuring out the next plan of attack and you focus on just having a nice relaxing time away with Rick! Safe travels and be sure to soak up enough to bring back for all of us here in The Great White North! Looks like we're going to get pounded!

    Luvmygoats,

Thanks for the martini recipe! It sounds good. I don't think I've ever had a martini of any kind but all the new flavored ones may make me try one! In fact, if we're going to be snowed in, a martini or two may not be a bad idea...lol!

I saw that they have started naming Winter Storms. I wonder when that started?!

To all in the path of this winter storm, stay safe!!!

    Michelle,

I hope that your trip is a total blast! I don't know how you managed to plan it so very perfectly. The snows are coming and you will be long gone. I will have to contact my Friday client and hope hope hope that they don't want me onsite that day. Surely whatever it is can wait for Monday.

Seaside - I think the naming of winter storms just started this year. I think it is a marketing strategy by the Weather Channel.

Ha ha! Very scary!!!  Do they really sound like that when they are demanding???

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d8ZDSyFS2g

Does anyone have any ideas for stocking up for the "blizzard of 78"  that is supposedly coming?

I'm making soup and have cheese and fruit and milk, but cannot think of anything that would be good if the electricity goes out

I hope the name of the storm is not Susan

I may get some pineapple, peppers, onions and things to make in the fireplace if that happens.  Then there's always the "Hobo meal" we made in girlscouts all wrapped up in aluminum foil. !

    Hope everyone stays safe.

Michelle have fun on your trip!

Nancy Yippee on your mammo results.

Debbie I am still thinking of you

For dinner tonight, Cheese frajitas, very easy, saute onions and peppers in a pan, then  put in frajitas wraps, add cheese before closing and put back in pan  until it melts and then add sour cream or salsa on top.

Oh just checked the weather forecast for Philly and it looks like it will be 40 here on Friday and we will just get rain. Hope that's correct!

Michelle, have a wonderful time on your trip! I am sorry the carboplatin didn't work. I hope the gemzar and abraxane do the trick! #%}#%}# cancer!

Had a salad and veggies for dinner tonight. Think I'll have a bowl of cereal later. DD had chicken soup. Yesterday had spaghetti and meatballs. Lacey, you are out of my league! I have no idea what an amuse bouche is. I would like to try it though!

    Luvmygoats,

Lol, you're probably right on the weather channel hype! Storms like this one are what they live for! Here's hoping none of us wind up with Jim Cantore in our town! That would be when you know you are REALLY in for it!

Thats funny, I wondered what was up with naming the storm?

Bedo- Tough call on stocking up.  We have the wood stove and have always been able to cook on top of it if need be, soup grilled cheese etc.  I am going to try to think of some ideas for you.

Lacey- The super slide is a 12 foot portion of the camper that slides out 3 1/2 feet to increase the living space with in the camper.  So instead of a narrow path you have a good spcae to walk around in.  I still can't believe we did it!

Had the left over shells for dinner.  Boys were asleep early because I had them skip nap to give me a long day- but an early bed time.  Enjoying the quiet.

Bedo - I have one or two that are noisy loud but that commercial might be a little exaggerated.  Knew someone on a goat group once that culled hers for being loud.  They do have individual voices and I can usually recognize the one calling.  And one or two are really quiet most of the time, unless I am late feeding them in the morning.

And they DO love Doritos or anything salty like chips.  Have a picture of one with a Dorito bag stuck on her/his head.  They get all the bags crumbs around here.

Seaside - yes, you would know you were a goner if you see Jim Cantore.  He's on the Weather Channel right now but so excited he can't keep tomorrow and Friday straight.  And no, they named the storm Nemo.  How cute! Oh and they've cancelled the regular programming for storm alert.  I just learned what I need to carry in my car and toilet paper was one of them.  That's not something I would want to run out of.  Milk and bread seem to be the favored storm items.  Peanut butter/jelly.  Make sure you have a water supply if you rely on power to pump it.  I would want something like canned stew stuff that I could heat in fireplace or over a grill.  Those premade tuna salads with crackers or tuna in general.

Dinner tonight will be catch what you can. Just not in the mood to cook. But I do have everything I think to make Carole's potato leek soup. Now to get crackin' on it tomorrow.  We actually have winter coming back on Tuesday with highs in the 40s and Accuweather is calling for snow???.  I don't think so.

Had not heard they were naming the storms....it's not enough to recall the year they happened?! I agree it is probably a marketing method. That's what our media culture does!

I'm feeling a little badly that I have ignored DH's casual requests to head south for a couple weeks. I just have no motivation to plan, pack etc., and worry that wherever I go, I will end up with more allergies...such an annoying curse!

Kay...I am not at all out of your league...just been to a few restaurants which feature that first bite ( a "pleasurable mouthful" may be the translation...others may know it more accurately than I) of something delightful to get your taste buds/appetite going. It is presented as the first bit of food before the meal. I have never had it in the form of tiny bit of soup before....and not so sure I'm crazy about that idea....but we'll see.I look forward to making this menu with the woman with whom I'm sharing the duties. She has lived in many other countries, so her soup idea is clearly more refined than my tastes!

Another idea brought up by our friend whose house we were at for the Super Bowl (ahem....mid winter party in Boston!;) is to have our own Big Night dinner. We still need to find one or two other couples who have a cooking member.....every time I think of other friends to include, I realize that they don't cook....disqualifying factor...collaborative effort since there is a lot to cook.

    Stay safe everyone....

    Lacey,

Thanks to your post after your 'Big Night' dinner I did some googling to find out what you were talking about and it looked so interesting! No restaurant around here (that I know of) offers anything like that. Soooooo DH and I did our own this past Saturday. We made our own pizzas and streamed the movie (which we had not seen before) through Amazon Prime. Our pizzas were no Timpano, for sure, but it was a really good movie and a nice night!

I think that would be a really great idea for a memorable party/dinner!

You & DH have a marvelous time on your vaca.  The "C" word will be buried under all that snow, another 4 letter word I hate.  I told DH to get the snow blower ready, it may even need gas, I will probably be snowblowing myself, DH has severe advanced arthritis in his hip and will need a replacement soon, he is in a lot of pain, I don't think he will be able to operate the machine.  Oh well, I hope it is nice and fluffy and easy to shovel and snowblower, maybe I can use my leaf blower, lol.

    It's an old clunker.

Seaside, isn't that a great movie! My DH has always loved it...and several years ago we also played it while making some special Italian dishes. We did an antipasto and then small plates of several kinds of pasta dishes with our friends who have since accompanied us to La Morra twice for the serious version. The owners of this small restaurant in Brookline Village, lived and trained as chefs in Piedmonte, (sp?) Italy, and started the Big Night movie/dinner a few years ago. I think they also do a La Dolce Vita movie/dinner.

I love what you and DH did :) ......definitely more manageable and I love homemade pizza!! We recently ordered Amazon Prime, so I hope we can access some interesting shows/movies as well as ebooks.

    Lacey,

If you are new to Amazon Prime be prepared to be spoiled and unwilling to go back to not having Prime... Between the 2 day free shipping (especially nice at Christmas time and college textbook ordering time) and the free streaming videos (hello seasons 1 and 2 of Downton Abbey) and book lending, I've been a happy camper!

For those that have a student in the household with a valid studentname.edu email, check out Amazon Student. You can get most of the perks offered through a regular Prime account for half price for up to 4 years! You can choose via your Amazon account settings whether to just keep it for the year or to automatically auto-renew and charge your credit card.

I signed up originally on a free trial but have gotten so much use out of it that, thus far, it is totally worth the charge!

Seaside, I was a bit put off by amount of the Prime charge, but we are doing the free trial, and will probably roll it into the regular membership. We use Amazon so much, and it will be nice not to have to always feel the need to pad a small order to get the 25 dollar free shipping. Wish we had gotten it before paying for seasons one and two so we could catch up on Downton. The local library was taking forever and we wanted to catch up quickly. Finished four weeks ago....then this week the library notified us that the DVD was in. ;/

Maybe while we are snowed in this weekend we can explore the Prime offerings. I can definitely see how it would be really valuable to your family! Maybe we should rent a college student. :)

Oh Seaside, Jim Cantore is headed your way. Not sure exactly what spot he's off to, but WeatherChannel sending I think 4 people.  Some people put on music, I put on WeatherChannel.  Just seeing that no school in Boston tomorrow.

Hope everyone is getting their shopping/stocking up done.  Stay warm everyone.  At least it will be the weekend.  You can commiserate with me when its 110 in August.

Hope Michelle got off safely this am.

Not sure what is for dinner.  Found recipe for coconut couscous and might make that with something dug out from freezer even though I have no green onions for it.  DH would not know the difference.  I used to keep frozen chives.  Do they still make those?

DH comes home tonight, yay!!  I was going to try a new recipe for a crock pot chicken and dumplings tonight but spent too much time running errands.  So I am going to make a chicken pot pie instead.  I got to the grocery store nice and early this morning and it wasn't crowded at all.  I hate to say it, but I hope we do get two feet of snow.  DH would love to ride his snowmobile and so would the boys.  Plus we could make a wicked cool fort!

    Waving back to you Susan!

If your daughter does not have interest in the prime membership for herself, you can sign up through your Amazon account and give her .edu e-mail. The only time that e-mail is used is in the very beginning they send an e-mail to that address to verify that it is indeed a working address. You then click something in the e-mail and that's the extent of it.

After initial sign-up, emails, etc go to whatever e-mail you have listed on your account settings and not the .edu one unless that's what you want.

DD just hits me up to order for her if she needs to!

This is from the Amazon site and says things a little more clearly than I did...

"To sign up, visit the Amazon Student sign-up page. Once you submit the sign-up form, you'll receive an e-mail at your .edu e-mail address to confirm the address is valid; click the verification link in that e-mail to complete the sign-up process.

If your .edu e-mail address isn't listed on your Amazon.com account, that's OK. The only e-mail we'll send to your .edu e-mail address is the verification e-mail. After that, other Amazon Student e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address listed on your Amazon.com account."

    Hope this helps!

    Luvmygoats,

I SAW that about Jim Cantore this morning when I was also watching over coffee this AM! lol. I'm in upstate NY and we are looking at 6-10" at this point. Not nearly what the Massachusetts and New Hampshire girls are looking at!

    Laurie,

Good thinking getting out early to go to the store. I share a car with my son and he's in class until 4:30 today so I will need to go when he gets home. I bet it's going to be a zoo by then. :(

    Lacey,

While on the free trial some of the Prime Benefits such as the video streaming and Kindle lending library aren't included. They only kick in if you choose to go to the paid student membership. When I signed up I figured I'd try it for a year and see how much (or not) I would use it... Used it tons and just renewed for another year in January! EDITED to add: OK just so I can confuse things a bit more....lol.. streaming and Kindle lending library ARE available during the free trial period for the regular Amazon Prime accounts just, not the Student ones....

Well ladies, the TV has started blaring out the Winter Storm Warnings so it looks like this is for real! Stay safe and warm!
