Just started last night. My toes are spasming so bad, my toes are all deformed looking. Tried stretching the opposite way, it's not working. Any other ideas? The pain is excrusiating!

I know this sounds rediculous, but my Mother swore by putting either a cork placemat, or some wine bottle corks at the bottom of her bed.  She used to suffer from terrible cramps, but after doing this she swore they reduced to almost nothing.

GmaFoley, I get bad foot and leg cramps at night and chalk it up to tamoxifen.  Only thing I've found to help is the bar of soap trick.  You unwrap a fresh bar of soap and put it under the bottom sheet where your legs will be.

Here's the original 2005 article from The People's Pharmacy and a 2012 update.

    http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2005/12/07/soap-under-the/

    http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2012/07/22/why-does-soap-soothe-nighttime-leg-cramps/

Sounds wacky and no one seems to know why it works, it just does.  Good luck!

    * bananas

    * tonic water (with or without the gin)

    *  a bar of soap under the sheet (sounds crazy like Ariom's cork, but people swear by the soap too)

    * trace the 'ABCs' with your foot in the air

I get them too.  I have the bar of soap under the mattress.  Maybe that reduced them?  I eat a banana a day.  I try to avoid some shoes with poor arch support since that seems to guarantee a foot cramp.

I have found that if jumping out of bed and then walking it off doesn't work then I've acutally used a cold pack.  The cold seems to really help when it's a bad one.

    Increase your intake of magnesium.

Low sodium V-8 juice for potassium and magnesium supplements worked for me.  I know how painful the foot cramps can be.  Hope this helps.  Good thoughts to you.

I have the same thing from the Feraston (anti hormonal) I am taking. I eat a banana a day and take magnesium.

I am going to try the bar of soap!!! Anything to help.

Inserts in the shoes can help too. When you are at Walmart, look for the Dr. Scholl machine. You stand of it, and it tells you which insert to buy based on it's readings. I have found those inserts very helpful (make sure you have good, supported shoes also).

I've been cursed with leg & feet cramps since I was a teenager. Became worse on Tamoxifen. I was leaping out of bed several times a night because standing & walking them out is the only thing that help. Recently I started taking Turmeric, hoping it would reduce some other aches & pains of mine. Well....it made my arthritic hand stop throbbing & my leg cramps have mysteriously disappearred. I can go a week or more without one. Just thowing this out there. Really not much of a supplement taker or believer.

Thanks for all your input! Coraleliz, So me - Jumping out of bed several times a night and soon as I lay down again I have to jump up again... Try doing that attached to a CPAP LOL - It would make a great funniest video I'm sure, just not for me.. I did up my water, last night wasn't as bad... I checked all my supplements and I have all the magnesium, potassium I should need. Doc said if it is still there Monday, he wants to see me.. I am also eating tumeric on everything.. so we shall see what happens.

Again, you all came to my rescue in time of need.. THANK YOU !!!!!Laughing

Edit: I have tried all the AIs  - doc took me off all of them each time tried. Now, the doc wants me to try the Tamox, its sitting on my headboard.. Want to give it a fair chance, but with all the other stuff I'm dealing with, I wouldn't know, so ONC said to get other stuff straightened out first.  It has almost been 2 years - not sure I should hold off too much longer to try.. Not sure what I should do.

GmaFoley - I have no idea if this would help you or not, but I do remember seeing it as a recent post here on BCO:

Cyborg, sorry the bar of soap trick didn't work completely for you.  Sometimes it fails me too and I end up getting out of bed to walk it off.  But that only happens every once in a great while.  Pls let us know how the cork works.

I think placing the corks at the foot of the bed might really help if you drink the wine first!!! Wink

Thick warm bed socks help me immediately.  I always wear them in the winter and sometimes in the summer if the air con is on and my feet are cold. I was told that the circulation to feet and toes is compromised hence the muscle cramps. I have terrible cramps in the ankles and toes and sometimes the calf as well.

If it is really bad then quinnine tablets help within 10 minutes. I have suffered from cramps since pregnant with my first child.  The doc at the time told me to take Valium to relax the muscles.....of course I did not and found other ways not involving medication.

In the winter I use an electric blanket and what a joy to get into a warm bed, joints and muscles are soothed immediately.  I never suffer from cramps whilst using the electric blanket......and I still wear my bed socks.

Please be careful with quinine tablets.  They were taken off the market in the U.S. about 4-5 years ago due to SE involving cardiac/heart issues.

Oh thanks Julianna I had not heard of that SE. Have not taken many over the years but for sure will not take anymore. I think they used to treat Malaria with quinine.

I found some homeopathic leg cramp pills. They seem to be helping.

First tamoxifen--and now arimidex--gives me horrible leg cramps. Taking potassium capsules has worked wonders.

Gma-What's in those leg cramp pills?

Another thing that's helped me in the past is wearing compression socks(the kind made for runners). I'd wear them around the house but take them off to sleep,

Don't know why, but I have found that eating a dill pickle (or taking a few swallows of the brine) almost immediately eases my foot cramps. I typically get them late at night and they wake me up...so off I go to the fridge! It doesn't take much and is usually immediate relief. Hope you get relief soon as foot cramps are awful!

I am about ready to try anything. Pickle Juice? Yep! That's next. Also, I stopped gluten as of today.

Ysa and Cyborg, I have done some research on that subject, mainly asking around.. it is the vinegar in the dill pickle juice.. I was told by my chiropractor that one tbsp of vinegar a day will help with almost anything including the digestion.  Not sure why but it is an old cure for about everything.

The bar of soap trick worked for me.  Makes no sense to me whatsoever, but I can't argue with the results!  Cool

Tried socks, magnesium and put a bar of soap in the bed and last night was the first night in months I did not have severe calf cramps.  One little bit on getting out of bed and that was it!  Relief!!!
