Benny, bet you will have yours on 9th. Be positive !! Hope the squits have subsided. Antibiotics can cause them can't they ?
As for the flippin potatoes, can you do the fries ( no fat ) that my girls do ? They brush the frie shapes with beaten egg then cook them on baking tray in the oven. Dip in mayo or ketchup bit more interesting maybe.
As traii says you go with the codeine if it helps. Hope things improve quickly.
Fire glowing beautifully too all fixed thanks.
Dying to hear about LGFB workshop, want to try and go on one this month xLesleyanne, you are on brave lady !! A cough on top of everything is adding insult to injury. Hope it stops soon x
Dakota, you will woop Taxol's ass, your kids must be sooo proud of their amazing Mum.Will be there too in your pocket next to upside down Traii
My next treatment on the 8th is no 4 of 8 half way !! xTraii, thrilled you have no yucky tongue and feel good. As for the peeing , at least you getting good flush through. Hope you stay well, you have given me hope for next regime about a month from now. x
Luvmy, bearcub, websister, joanne, jennie ,Bevlee, Nihahi, Carla and anyone else LOVE YOU XXXX

Websister, I am ashamed to type out what went into the carrot soup but I must 'fess up: a cup of onions, freshly ground ginger, heavy cream, among other things (like carrots). Perhaps this is why I was so sick. It sure tasted good tho'. And yes, Amoxicillin always gives me the runs. I thought with the constipating effect of the codeine it might balance itself out. Can you tell me what probiotics you take and where to get them?
Edi, glad the furnace is a go. I will try the fries! Not sure the tummy could handle ketchup but we'll see. I like to have a few fries with my ketchup. I'll let you know how the LGFB workshop goes.
-
Okay, I am being completely crude here (that's your warning) but in keeping with Edi's Ring of Fire theme, this song popped into my head (another Johnny Cash classic), altho' I've changed the words a bit. Anyone recognize the song?
I feel a poop a 'comin'
It's just around the bend
That's all that I been doing since
I don't know when
I'm stuck in bathroom prison
And time keeps draggin' on
But that poop keeps on comin'
Where's my Imodium?
Please hold your applause!!!!

-
Love the song Benny..(round of applause)..bet u wrote that while sittung on the loo...lol you are a ★
-
hahaha you guys are GREAT and let me tell you keeping a sense of humor in all of this WILL serve you well. It can honestly help get you through some of the dark times. I had THE worst constipation as you know I want to write a whole book on Cancer Constipation : ) Then after these big surgeries Aug stage 1 was 12 hours and Dec 14 was 7 hours they give you MEGA doses of narcotics which bind you up so back to constipation world....I am moving again but boy I wish Benny and I could split the difference I would take half her runs for half my constipation then between us we could both be regular : )
-
Benny - If you can handle it, yogurt is always good. I think most of the common brands have active cultures now. Hope Websister replies to you about OTC probiotics you have there. She was a great source of advice to you with her earlier post. Enjoy - if that's the right sentiment considering the reason for it - the LGFB class. You're definitely one step ahead with your cute wig. I like Edi's fries with egg wash. Bet that is somewhat how they get seasoning to stick on fries. Know my fav. ShakeNBake says dip chicken in milk. The onions might have been the clincher in soup; gas producer. Ginger maybe not so much since it is supposed to soothe nausea.
Edi - glad your gas fire is going again. Finally had a little sun today. I've just been in the window soaking it up like a lizard. I had the bundled look yesterday. Flannel shirt, sweatshirt jacket, DH fleecy jacket, beany cap and scarf inside the house (DH added the scarf). Finally got a little bit warmer. We keep house at 68 but living room end of house is much colder with poorer insulation (added on). I might have go get a little electric heater for my feet.
Benny you have posted since I started this. Can you tell I get up in between to do stuff? Love the BR ditty. Humor is great and I love to see it. Do wish as Lesleyanne says you could trade 1/2-1/2 symptoms. I can't imagine just one cough with those stitches.
Here's to better health in 2013. I have mammo on the 14th then BS appt end of the month. Don't think much going on. MO appt in December was a yawner; don't see him again until June.
-
Benny !! Need the tena lady pads ! LOVE the song, gonna print and frame it for my little loo. lol. While we are on the subject my dear sweet little Mum would say " Do farts have lumps ? Oh no I have sxxt myself !! ( she was joking I hasten to add ) Unlike her daughter she was a real lady, but could come out with some crackers and bring the house down.
By the way never mind heroin or cannabis I could be an Immodium dealer. Have so many packets of it, they rain out of the medicine cabinet whenever I open the door. If I get down to less than two packets get the shakes lol.
Almost kept the cork from new year champagne for next week after no 4.xLuvmygoats, Glad you got sun today :-) is that the big round yellow thing ? Actually not too grotty here, bit damp but flooding of our fair isle has abated for now.
Has all your treatment finished ? Hope your mamo goes well, how lovely to be seeing less and less of hospital.XLesleyanne, think maybe the squits is better than the pain of constipation. Good idea 1/2 and 1/2 with Benny x
Traii, hope today another good one for youx
DH is watching football, yawn. too lazy to go into other room and watch a dvd, although yesterday watched " it's a wonderful life " Wow what a movie, may be old but the best I have ever seen.DH got me coloured version and even though I have seen it dozens of times, cry buckets at the end everytime. That and Titanic. My great uncle was the chief baker on board and was the last man into the sea. He survived even though he was treading water for ages. If anyone watches the movie he walks behind the hero and heroine as the ship tips up, swigging from a bo.ttle of spirits. Now I know where I get it from. Cheers hic.
Almost midnight here so up the apples and pears to noddy land.
Edi x

HELLO!!!
Hope 2013 is smiling on you all so far. I'm lovin it! I have a new bald head.. I'm living with that.. but my BIG news, that I can't tell anyone else - but you girls are coooool... My 23 year old daughter is gonna have a baby!!!! I am lovin havin something so Awesome to be HAPPY about!!!
Hey... did you guys lose your eyebrows too? I put some tanning cream on my scone cos it was so white LOL! Looks much healthier - I'm missin my hair though
Please Please don't respond to that with "It'll grow back!!!" xxxHow's things Dakota? Tracey? Edi? Carlads?
Love To You All XXX and Happy New Year full of Love and Happiness XXXX
-
Congratulations, Bevlee - what exciting news for you!
I did lose my eyebrows but it can depend on the type of chemo you receive and duration
Benny - I use the HealthBalance Multi-Strain Probiotic - I get mine at Costco. It seems to do the trick for me but there are some people who say you have to have the ones that require refrigeration (expensive and not sure it's necessary). Greek yogurt would do dual purpose for you (no fruit, just honey yogurt) - if there is active culture it would help supply probiotics and it would supply more protein than regular yogurt.
Re: soup ingredients - gasp!!!!!
- sounds like you were craving some flavor - the reason spices, even ginger, are not so good with mucositis is that is causes little ulcerations in the mucous lining. Bland is best.
You also may just have a career beyond social work with songs like that up your sleeve.
Have to run, my son has a hockey game in less than an hour at an arena across the city.
Take care everyone. -
Quick clarification - the spices don't cause the ulcerations, but they irritate the already inflamed tissue
-
Edi-
U crack me up!!! Thanks for making my night!!!
Bevlee-
Congrats!!! How exciting!!!
Web sister-
U are such a great source of information !!!
Luvmy goats , Traii, Lesley , Benny
Everyone hope all is well. I will update after #5 tomorrow!!! Fingers crossed its goes well!!! -
HI Guys, Sounds like everyone is rolling along pretty well today! Despite that fact that I have now somehow managed to also screw up my GOOD shoulder, and my capsular contracture is really raising hell lately, I finally managed to take my hyper cold sensitive nose out for a lovely 2 hour snowshoe with a good, good friend. Like Benny's time with Diamond, being outside in the mountains is something I need, make that NEED to stay sane. So wonderful to be out again, and I just had to brag about it as I knew you all would understand. Lesley - I had you in my backpack!
Benny - I totally understand the reluctance to get dependent on meds, but your reason for taking pain meds won't last forever, and if you allow the blood level of the drug to fall too low, you might be getting breakthrough pain, which makes the next dose less effective, and that cycle is not one you want to be on.
Websister - I don't think I have read one "downer" message from you. All your posts are so supportive of everyone else, hope you treat yourself just as well!
-
Websister, have fun at your sons hockey game.....
Lol Edi, anyone sees my little 'stash' of goodies, Dexo , Anti Nauseas, pain relief just to mention a few and I don't use dexo anymore amd the anti nauseas I haven't opened and each time I go they keep giving me more....lol. You are a hoot.....x
Bevlee, congrats on soon to be Nana , at least it does give you something to look forward to after all of this crap
I didnt loose my eyebrows, they have thinned (glad I had full eyebrows).....eyelashes still there, never had thick ones but can wear mascara still and curl my lashes....still have hair on my head but still gotta wear my wig as I look much like a baby with hair spiking everywhere.....even thought I had a spider on me when i was running up the house yesterday.....damn hair felt like a spider....lol boy did I sh&^ myself......
-
Bevlee, what amazing and wonderful news !! now is the start of the most magical time of your life. you will hurtle through all this treatment as you have to get well for the years of fun and joy ahead with precious little one.
As for the no hair , just all part of this and we are all in same boat at the moment. Eyebrows still here and eyelashes ,but if you do lose eyebrows there is some good info on youtube on how to draw them back with a really natural look.
My GD calls be baldy nana and informed me yesterday that my hair will be brown when it comes back as she could see little brown hairs growing through. :-)xwebsister, you are lovely, hope hockey game went well. I used to be the goalie in hockey, needless to say we lost every game lol x
Traii, about tea time where you are I think ? hope you had a good day. Spiders omg ! believe they are massive and dangerous in Aus. x
Nihahi, two hour snowshoe good for you ! Bet Lesley loved being in your backpack too x
Benny, nihahi is right if you need the meds take them. Do not suffer more than you have to. You owe it to yourself to make this as painless as possible. Hope today ok for you x
Dakota, thinking of you x
DH back at work today after 8 days off. I have a cake to design and make and lots of tidying up to do. Hope you all are well and happy.
Edi x
-
Ohhhh Nihahi you almost made me cry thanks for packing me along!!!! You are a goddess.
Bevlee, great attitude!! Congrats on the grandbaby. I would find it AMAZING if any woman who has EVER lost her hair to chemo would tell you it will grow back. Go read my earlier posts, I was ready to walk around with a razor and zip a bald strip in every person's thoughtless head that said that and then when they are all mad I would just say, "Why so upset you JUST told me it will grow back!!!"
I did lose all my eyebrows and lashes. If you lose your lashes find some glasses fast, especially if it is windy. Things fly DIRECTLY in your eye without lashes - just dust and small particles but it is irritating. You don't realize what a genius design your lashes are until you don't have them. It was horrid for me because I live where it is windy and dusty, we have tumbleweeds. I do not wear glasses normally, but definitely needed them until they grew back.
Hang in there you are all doing terrific. I know it may not feel like it.
Lesley

Nihahi is right... Websister, you are Awesome!
-
Hi,
Just a quick note to check in.. Off to get my hair cut.. I think it will be easier for me if I cut it short before it starts to fall out.. I will post later..
Love you all,
Carla
-
Hi girls,
I'm back from South Africa, and want to wish all of you a very happy new year. May 2013 be filled with good things, much love and fun. Have not read all the posts, but will catch up. Benny, that funny song makes me think you are doing way better than when I left a month ago - you go, girl!
-
Hi gang! It's plus 8 here in Calgary so must get out while I can to see the giant plush toy and show her the new warrior saddle pad. The LGFB workshop was good last night. Came home with a box of goodies. I layered myself up good last night before bed: cuticle cream, wrinkle cream, deep therapy hand cream, eye brightener cream, lip repair cream plus a new sleep cap. Benny had a double-take when i crawled into bed covered in cream!
Luvmygoats, not usre if my system can handle yogurt yet. I had cereal and a rice cake with honey this morning and I am in agony right now. Might take a codeine or the day will be lost to pain. You and I have similar fashion styles. I am wearing my neon blue fleece Buddweiser pants, orange torn T-shirt, maroon fleece jacket, pink beany cap and of course my cowboy boot slippers. I sure hope no one comes to the door.
Edi! That's so exciting about your Titanic connection! That is one of my favourite movies ever. I will watch for him next time I see it.
Bevlee, congratulations on the upcoming grandbaby! Planning for that will definitely keep you busy and happy. I have only had two chemos but so far have all my eyebrows, eyelashes and hair everywhere else. Only lost some hair on my head and not even all of that.
Websister, thank you for the probiotic info. I will try the yogurt (introduce it very slowly) and if that doesn't work will just buy probiotics and see if I can handle that. I'm in alot of pain this morning and still suffering from the carrot soup ordeal.

Nihahi, yes, I can completely relate to the importance of getting your fix, whatever it is. Mine = horse, fresh air; yours = mountains, fresh air. So very important. I'm hopefully heading out there again today as temp is good. With regard to Websister.... yes, you are correct. She is a stellar human being, the salt of the earth. I am so glad I met her and that she is a part of our group.
Carla, hope your trip to the salon isn't too stressful today.
-
@Bevlee....WOW. Now I understand why Austrailia is known for it's sunshine. Nothing is gonna stop that awesome smile of yours! Congrats on the Grandma thing too!
-
Hey there,
The mountain magic has done the trick! I now have a date for first appt with surgeon to consult on reconstruction. YEAH!
-
Benny re: mucositis here is a definition, I think it helps to understand what is happening to the mucous membranes in the digestive tract -
'Chemotherapy-induced mucositis is the inflammation of your mucous membranes, which are tissues that line your digestive system – all the way from your mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum to your anus. Mucositis is caused when chemotherapy attacks and kills the rapidly-dividing cells in your mucous membranes. This condition feels like sunburn (or heartburn) on your mucous tissues, and often leads to sores in your mouth or on your tongue. It is a common side effect of chemotherapy for breast cancer.'
This means that things that might be scratchy on the lining of the digestive tract like a rice cake or cereal is probably not the best. Here are the recommendations from the site I got this information from -
'Drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Purified or deionized water can reduce irritation, if you are feeling very raw.
Drink sports drinks with electrolytes (Gatorade, Poweraid) to stay hydrated.
Cut down on or avoid caffeine and alcohol (these dry your tissues).
Eat soft comfort foods: ice cream, popsicles, milkshakes, smoothies, pudding, yogurt, gelatin, mashed potatoes, bananas, and applesauce (not spiced).
Avoid food and drink that irritate tissues: citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, spicy or salty foods. Forget about hot peppers, curry, salsa, and raw ginger and onions, until you feel better.
Avoid all forms of tobacco and nicotine, because these irritate raw tissues (such as mouth sores) and delay healing.
Avoid foods and liquids that contain a lot of sugar.
Use lip balm (not mentholated) for dry lips, and avoid breathing through your mouth.
If you wear dentures, use them only for meals, to let your gums rest, and to reduce irritation.
Use a soft toothbrush and floss gently, to avoid irritating your gums.'
Let us know what how the saddle pad worked, glad you are able to get out today, I'm sitting waiting for my Herceptin infusion, quiet here today
-
Ok haircut is done! So it won't be as bad when I buzz it. It looks like Meg Ryans in the movie Top Gun. Kinda the messy look..
Websister, so glad you had time with your Mom.. Love her up! I miss my mom so much.. Also, everything you just posted about Mucositis is exactly what the Oncologist NP told me yesterday, almost word for word.. She said take a pro-biotic.. and she gave me MuGard for oral Mucositis. It is prescription only, so if my insurance doesn't cover it they will give me a sample size at each treatment. Also a little more information that I hadn't heard before was to take Alpha Lipoic Acid 200 mg daily and it is supposed to help with the Neulasta injection, as well as regular Claritin which we knew about. You could have a new profession after all of this is over.. I love all your knowledge.
Benny, like I said she told me to take a probiotic which I do already, and also the yogurt with pro-biotic Activia up to 3 times a day.. we will all get you through this.. I love the new saddle pad.. so glad you decided to get it..
Bevlee, Congratulation's! Becoming a Grandma was the best thing ever! I love my grand-daughter so much there is nothing like it! The love you will feel is something I can't explain. Your heart will melt. Let me tell you when I found out I was going to be a grandma I wasn't to happy, it was my second oldest daughter and she was 21 I just thought she was too young. She sure proved me wrong!! She and her husband are the best parents, and Rachael is my little "Sunshine".. I am so happy for you!! Love your new picture. Good idea about the self-tanner.. I just might have to do the same thing..
Leslsey, constipation is one of my fears about Chemo. I do think that Taxotere causes diarrhea, but I know the other meds cause constipation.. So I am stocking up on fiber and prunes... I know lot's of water..
Liefie, welcome back!
Traii, it sounds like your new treatment is going well!!
Dakota, Edi, Luvmygoats, Bearcub, Jennie, Nihahi, hope you all are good..
Love out to everyone!
Carla

Websister, thank you so much for finding that. I did look online but only found sites that address oral mucositis, which is not what I have (well, I did have the mouth sores but they're gone). But I do feel like I have a sunburn going on inside my chest and it's been like that since December 24. It should be starting to heal by now but it doesn't feel like it. I have been eating mashed potatoes and applesauce but it gets tiring after awhile. The cereal is usually mush by the time I swallow it so that's why I didn't think it would be damaging. I'm trying gluten free corn pasta tonight to see if that goes down okay. That article contradicts itself a wee bit when it says avoid sugery things but recommends ice cream and pudding. I can't handle the Gatorade because of the citric acid content (ouch). I don't drink coffee or alcohol so am following it pretty good. It needs to start healing tho' as I am sick of the pain and the diet.
I did get out to see Di today but was too weak to do anything. I couldn't even lift the saddle on her, so I put my new saddle pad in my cabinet and came home. Tomorrow I meet with the radiologist but Saturday will hopefully be stronger.
-
Carla, sounds like you are back in "fighter" mode. Good for you.
Benny, I'm sure you are frustrated with your "healing and fatigue", but you have to remember two things. First, "timelines" are just a guideline, everyone is different. Second, every time you overdo/overchallenge yourself, either on what you eat or how much energy you "use", you will set yourself back a bit. It's kind of like a bad cut - if you keep irritating it, it will take longer to heal. I'm not trying to be a "downer", but if you are expecting to be able to count on the "should be by now" theory, you have to be better at following the rules. There, done with the "big sister" lecture. (((((((((X)))))))))
-
Id you cannot do gatorade et al you can use pedialyte less acidic less sugar but gives you the electrolytes
-
Nihahi, ROFL!! I hear ya! I am very bad at following the rules.
I will try to pace myself better.Lesleyanne, I am heading over to Superstore right now to see if they carry pedialyte. Thanks

-
Benny - Get anything you tolerate that sounds even remotely good to eat. Packaged puddings (there is a rice pudding in a big tub ?Kosy Shack?), malted milk powder into warm milk, just anything. I know, money is, could be a problem but not talking anything extreme. I agree I can't do Gatorade and must admit I fed my DD Pedialyte but never tasted it. It might be a little salty. Might be able to dilute with water/apple juice. The cheaper apple juices to me are more watery and less tart. Good you at least got to visit the big plush toy.
-
My dentist told me once to drink club soda ... That helps to with electrolytes ...and you can get low sodium (in Canada for sure).
-
Well, the pharmacist said pedialyte has citric acid too and suggested I avoid it
I picked up some applesauce and am having that now. Just about passed out in Superstore when I stood up from a kneeling position. I also picked up some applejuice and will dilute that. And I do have a club soda here so will try that too. Thanks for the support, my warrior sisters ♥The pain is bad tonight so I broke down and took a codeine tab. Maybe I can get the supper dishes done now.
