What are you doing for fun??

Happy birthday, RangerMom!!
-
Caryn,
I agree - being a grandparent is the best. My baby became a father 7 months ago and it is amazing to see one's child become responsible for another life. I notice that not having to do the tough stuff, I can pay attention to the details of Josephine's development from week to week. What fun!
Fun is also spending time playing Mah Jong with good friends, having visits from family living far away, going to tea ceremony classes, having a juicy grass fed beef hamburger with home made fries, seeing a great movie, listening to beautiful music (check out Ablaye Cissoko/Volker Goetze -

-
Jill,
I can't believe you're a Mah Jong player! My mother had a weekly game with a group of women and it's a great childhood memory. My future SIL plays with his aunt and some of her friends and I keep saying I'm going to learn. If I close my eyes I can hear the sounds of the tiles clicking as I drifted off to sleep on the nights my mom's friends played at our house. The best treat was getting to eat the leftover cake and pastries from Saperstein's Bakery the next day. When people would ask me what Mah Jong was, I'd laugh and say it's a game played by Chinese men (my dad owned a business near Manhattan's Chinatown) and Jewish women. Not entirely untrue, but since future SIL plays it, I can include Jewish men.
Spent last night with older dd and granddaughter. She is 9 months old and gets to be more fun everyday. She is trying to wave hello, do high fives and give kisses. I just can't get enough of her!

Caryn,
Ah, I have the same memories from childhood in the Bronx, drifting off to sleep listening to the clicking of the tiles and the women calling out their cracks, bams, and dots. Bridge mix (chocolate covered nuts?) in the house always signaled a game that evening. When I started playing we sometimes recruited our sons when we needed extra players. They liked it. too.

Holiday Fun Update:
Our usual Christmas Eve dinner with old friends and their children and grandchildren was even better this year when the youngest among us contributed to the preparation and fun just as much as the adults. After a completely vegetarian Mexican meal, we did a new (for us) sort of gift exchange of one gift per person, accompanying those gifts with carefully crafted personalized poems, songs and the like. The new approach was not only easier on budgets, but it provided grand entertainment after dinner and was a smashing success.
The traditional Christmas Day dinner at our place with old friends and their now-grown children and SOs was a feast of many Mediterranean dishes, topped off with a cake from a Salvadoran bakery. My best friend brought English-style "poppers" with jokes, printed music sheets and little whistles inside. Her husband played conductor and called the various numbers of our whistles as we tootled our way through many Christmas carols. We laughed our heads off. Our conductor's serious determination and frustration with our squeaky noises/delayed reactions were pee-your-pants funny.
Every New Year's Day, we have an Open House with 80+ guests. It is an insane amount of work, but a multi-decade tradition that must be upheld. Speaking of which, I'd best stop typing and start cleaning.

Jill,
Did we discuss the Bronx connection already? Forgive my memory, or lack of it, if we have. I grew up in the Pelham Pkwy area and went to school, through high school there. For college, I ventured out to Queens
Caryn -
Caryn,
Not a memory problem - we haven't discuss it. I grew up near University Ave. and 179th St - west Bronx. Went to Bx Science and then to SUNY Stony Brook.
Jill -
Ah, I went to Columbus H.S.and then Queens College. Were you near the Grand Concourse?
Caryn -
Ranger mom, Hope your meal is extrordinary. Make sure you eat too much. Dessert too!
-
Happy Birthday, Tina and RangerMom.
Happy Grandparent's fun to most.
Happy here to be past Xmas, sorry its a downer way deep in my family genetic code.
Happy Whooping Cranes in Decatur Al today, 9 this year migrating with 1000 Sandhill Cranes. What a feast.
Speaking of feast: Real Italian food at Francesco's Italian Restaurant in Decatur.
As evidenced by Spumoni cheesecake. (Well, usually it's ice cream but Spumoni is a rare find.) -
Will be baby-sitting gs New Years Eve. Havnt seen him since Christmas but dd says hes been a handful this week.Maybe he will pass on some much-needed energy?! Hope so. Really have missed him.
-
Tina, spoke to the ducks for you! Actually, was awakened by their incessant quack quack quacking yesterday but they've been fairly quiet today. Took a nice walk on the beach Friday. The weather was war ish and no wind. The weather the rest of the week has been very cold. Hoping for a walk on the beach tomorrow if it's mild enough! Sounds like your Christmas was hilarious!!
K-lo, That spumoni cheesecake looks to die for! Yum! -
My son's flight back to NY got cancelled yesterday and I now have 2 more bonus days with him. That's fun!
I hope the new year brings you all joy, peace, and NED, or at least stable boy. As one of my beloved teachers said - you are the sun and everything else is the weather. Here's to a year without storms.
Caryn,I lived about a mile? west of the Grand Concourse and often went to the Paradise movie theatre near Fordham Rd.
-
Jill,
My graduation from JHS 135 was held at the Paradise theater. I remember shopping at Alexander's and getting candied orange peels at Krums. I was even born on the Concourse at Lebanon Hospital. Happy New Year to you and all my bco sisters.
Caryn -
Hi All - I had a super fantastic birthday yesterday. Couldn't have asked for more! Tonight for fun, I'm making a scratch spice cake with kahula glaze! Going to sit by the fireplace with a cup of joe, cake and watch the twliight zone marathon till the ball drops. God Bless you all dear "sisters." Let's believe 2013 will bring miracles to us that we can live our best life ever.
-
First of all, happy New Year to all my wonderful stage IV sisters. Who ever knew that such a wonderful group existed in the face of such awful circumstances? We took my granddaughter for her first swim at the Palo Alto JCC ( younger dd works there in aquatics). They have a beautiful, warm indoor pool and of course she looked adorable in her little swimsuit. Just got back to my house and will be packing to spend the night with that sweet little baby so her mom and dad can go out for New Year's Eve. May 2013 bring you all peace, happiness and stable health.
Caryn -
Happy New Year everyone! May 2013 bring you only wonderful things!
New Year's fun for us - Up to Memphis for the noon showing of The Hobbit, then on to The Peabody Lounge for the duck march and a Fuzzy Duck (ok, and an Old Fashion and maybe a sip or two of hubby's Jack Daniels Flight), then dinner at Texas de Brazil. Lots of fun! Starting the year off right.
-
Oh my gosh....dinner at Texs Brazil would be a good start.
I've been having fun fixing up my new little cottage. Couldn't get all my furniture in there which was stressing me. Told myself are you nuts being stressed over furniture? Sometimes I need a crazy pill.
A bit tired from all the activities so lying by an open window and feeling the sunshine on my face.. California is awsome. I'm dragging my daughter back to the cottage to help me in about a half hour. Hoping to go out for gelato too. a fun Sunday!
-
Sounds lovely, Soleil. You must be in southern CA because it's cold and damp here in Northern CA. Enjoy!
Caryn -
We celebrated our oldest dog's 12th birthday this weekend. She's an English Bulldog and has been through everything with us. We celebrated by taking her to the dog beach park near our house and then hubby and I split a banana with her (she loves bananas, you'd think she's a monkey).
-
So much sadness this week with passing of 3 beautiful souls. But one thing to remember is how well those three lived their lives. Tillycat took that trip last summer, I loved reading about it.
Apple brought joy to each day with simple things, always posting of beauty and art and her family. She was so filled with spirt .
Kita was amazing; making chemo hats for anonymous Christmas presents, going to the ball with her husband, taking her little girl out whenever she could
I feel like we should all try hard to live each day with joy and love like they did. That is our best tribute to them and to ourselves

Going to San Diego with my hubby in 2 weeks!! He's gone there for a business meeting every year and has always wanted me to go with him, but it never worked out b/c we ever could figure out what to do with the kiddos. Now that I'm stage IV, we have no problem pulling our son out of school for a couple of days so he can come with. He will be my wingman hanging out on the beach while DH is in meetings. Can't wait!!
-
Jill - is that you busting a move? You go girl. Funny video! Love it!
Marymoir - how cool is that? So glad you and your boy are getting to go! Sounds like a fantastic opportunity! Enjoy!
-
Well, today Ive got my house all to myself... yipee! dh is currently flipping a house, which I was also supposed to be working on, but ended up not going because there was sheetrock dust everywhere. Even with my lung mets not showing up on scans this time, I decided against it. Did not even think about it before we started cause they had never bothered me. So anyway gives me time to putter around my house, which is fine with me. Went to see Gangster Squad yesterday. It was o.k but pretty violent. I thought it would be better than it was. Dh slept through half of it but swore he didnt. Then slept through football last night too. Poor baby is pooped. Went shopping for dd this morning, her room mate moved out with out letting her know she was going and took alot of Rachels things with her, curtains, kitchen supplies etc...good ridance to her and it gave me an excuse to go shopping a little bit, which was fun.Young girls sure can be vindictive sometimes.

Decorating this teeny place has been fun. It started out like a dingy brown cabin....so, please keep that in mind. Im going to get back at it tomorrow, took a little break but here are a few pictures
-
So cute, Soleil! BTW, I love What a Wonderful World. There is a lavishly illustrated children's book with the song lyrics that I adore. It was one of my first gifts to my granddaughter.
Caryn -
Looks like you got it lightened up, bright, charming, and cozy, Soleil
-
Kathy,
Flowers love the sun and you clearly love flowers. Your place is looking bright and cheery. It reflects your sunny soul!
