Irene,
Here's the Jan the racelady story...it's long......
This was my e-mail to Jan that started everything:Quote:
Jan,
Can you tell me if the on the Detroit Komen Race website more maps and parking details are going to be posted? I'm coming in from Chicago and without a map listing available parking I'm going to be completely lost as I've never been to Detroit before.
Thanks
Bob & Mary
This is Jan's reply e-mail to me:Quote:
Bob & Mary - how wonderful you're coming in from Chicago! Are you meeting up with family here?
I'm attaching some links that should help with maps.
http://www.karmanos.org/detroitraceforthecure/maps.html
The first map isn't applicable to you. The rest may be of help to you. They show the event map, some parking around Comerica Park, and the race route. (you may have already found this on the race website.)
http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/det/ballpark/directions.jsp
This link is from the Tigers website, with directions to Comerica Park from various directions. This should help you get there!
http://www.detroitlions.com/photos/FordFieldParking_06.pdf
This link shows you parking around Ford Field and Comerica Park. The lots immediately surrounding the ball park are being used for the event - Purple Lots 1,2 and 3, and Blue Lot 6 right next to Comerica Park (maybe more, but I don't thing so). But, you can see there are many surrounding the area - if you choose an Olympia parking lot you will get a decent discount that day, a courtesy to the Race. Another choice is to use the People Mover and park away from the event. You can park near Cobo Hall or the Renaissance Center and use the People Mover. You'll be able to get off at a couple of People Mover exits and walk over to Comerica Park (Red Exits G & H).
http://detroitfestival.com/06/
This is the site for the Detroit Festival of the Arts, happening that same day. You probably received a brochure about it in your packet you received (you did receive packets, didn't you?) We are partnering with the festival and there will be a shuttle running all day from their site near Wayne State Unviersity/Detroit Institute of Arts down to our site and back. Another option is to park near the festival, take the shuttle down, and then shuttle back to the festival in the afternoon. This is a wonderful event, well worth staying for the afternoon! There should be signs posted for the shuttle stop, or you can ask anyone near the Festival parking where it is.
And lastly -
I'm also attaching a parking pass for the day below.. It's for volunteers, but I think coming from Chicago constitutes serious volunteering! Really, you are welcome to use the pass - as Team Chair I'm able to pass these out to those I think need them! The only hitch is you have to park before 7:00am. Just print it out and bring with you! This should be Lions/Tigers Garage on the map.
Please try and find me - I know, no problem in a crowd of 25,000+! Seriously, you probably can find me around the Team Meet Lot or the Team T-Shirt Competition. You can see where those are on the Event Map. I would love to meet you!
Jan
Teams
My e-mail reply to Jan:Quote:
Jan,
Thank you so much for the parking pass. That is a HUGE weight off my mind for sure.
No, no family in MI. Funny story on why I'm traveling all the way to Detroit for this race. I met some breast cancer survivors from MI on line on the website breastcancer.org. Nancy, one of my cybersisters from the breastcancer.org put a Team together (breastcancer.org Cybersisters and Friends) for the Detroit Race. I thought this was a good chance to met Nancy & some of my other breast cancer survivor cybersisters.
I can't thank you enough for the parking pass.
I'll see if I can find you on Saturday........
Thank you.......
Mary
Jan's reply:Quote:
Mary/Nancy - I met Nancy!! She and a friend came to our Early Bird Team Packet Pack Up day and helped pack up all the teams (about 375 teams!) and took her team stuff with her that day. How great you're getting together at the Race!
I love this story - do you think you and the rest would be interested in doing a story for us? We are always looking for nice ones that the media will pick up on. I'd like to pitch it - can't say if they will use it or not.
Can't wait to meet you all now!
Jan
I guess Jan though it was interesting that a group of women once strangers who met on line formed a Team and one nut was even coming from Chicago to Detroit to meet and walk with women she's never met. It is interesting how this Team was formed it just shows you how BC can bring people together.
kats -
My DH suggested flags on our heads. I THINK he was talking about Stars & Stripes, but......anyway, it's a thought. Maybe it'll light a spark.
-
Hmmm flags - my ideas have been kinda 'girly'. I saw ninja swords that were cute. Only a buck each. You know, we are warriors and all...
Kats - I guess I cut out alot of details! Thanks for posting. She said she would be at the Teem meet lot? I sure hope the survivor cafe is ok! Someone bop me if you think it will be a problem!
Ann - you haven't checked-in in a while. All set to meet us? Did you arrange for the trolley also?
Any clues on where to go to lunch or what to do afterwards? We usually go to the Coney Island but that will never hold all of us. That walk is going to make us HUNGRY! 3Bears, hear anything about Greek Town? It would be nice to get reservations. -
ok..........i'm sorry but i can't put a flag on my head.......i'm just way tooooooo self conscious........i'll tie it to my arm or leg but i would prefer not to draw any attention to my head lol! (or my belly for that matter).........i'll go for lunch wherever you guys like..........i'll eat anything!!!!!!
-
i hope that is not offensive as i am the "canuck minority" lol!..........i just don't really dig having ANY attention drawn to me myself and i lately..........it's a big, huge step for me to even come out for this walk!! i hope i've not upset anyone, and i'll agree to "whatever" in the end.........i "have issues" lol!!!!!!!!!
-
Ladies-heres a few suggestions for lunch in Greektown
Pizza popalis,Fishbones,Hella's,Olympia,The Old trapper's
We could also just go to Greektown, and see what strikes us. Most of the restaurants there are pretty good. What has everyone decided to wear?
Michelle -
even though i'm not a "pink" girl i'll wear the pink shirt... although my head would be a dead giveaway!........other than that i'm tying my "lucky BC quarter" to my shoe and away i go.............hubby and i used to go to "trappers" all the time..........sad to say i didn't even realize it was gone!! i'll eat anything, anywhere so just let me know ok?
-
Nancy - Congrats on the good mammo!
Here's a link for Kim Adams. She does health stuff on Channel 4..used to do weather. There's a link to email her on the page. http://www.clickondetroit.com/health/1832875/detail.html
I couldn't find an email address for Lila Lazarus on the Fox web site.
Um, I'm with shel38 on the head stuff. I have flashbacks whenever I try putting anything on my head. I'm sure that'll fade with time.....Although I could probably do one of those hats with the beer cans and a straw.
Fishbones is awesome.......a little pricey, but awesome. And it's right near the casino. Bonus!
Kats - did you tell her that we also had a Canadian coming? Shel...maybe you could get a parking pass too.
Eeeewwww I have June bugs hitting my window..... -
Hey all...I will order the tye dye bandanas (they are cheap)...and we can wear them wearever...heads, on hats, on arms, legs, etc. And then we can wear the the lucky coins, and I will bring the smiley stickers. And don't forget you sunglasses! Hey...if we win anything it will be nice to look a bit different...and it might also be a good way for us to find each other. I don't want to stand out either...but what the hay?
-
i'd like that a lot!..........i have june bugs everywhere here by the way!.........fishbones rocks as well! g'night girls.........i'm up to 950.00 bucks! yay!
-
O/t For some reason there has been an explosion of June bugs this yr. Im terrified of them, and everytime I take my new puppy out at nite I swear they chase me. Anyways- when we were kids my dad used to tape them to bottle rockets and zoom, zoom, zoom up to the moon. Isnt that terrible?lol.
-
i absolutely hate the sound they make when they hit the windows on the lake side.........they just freak me out, like bees but "grosser" that's not terrible.......they're bugs lol!
-
Hi, girls... Only 5 more days until race day. Yahooo! Did anyone see Melissa Ethridge on Entertainment Tonight this weekend? She stated that she recently did a show in Texas. Sheryl Crow was orignally scheduled to appear...but she asked Melissa to fill in for her. In honor of Melissa, Sheryl and bc survivors, the majority of the concert goers wore pink. Melissa said it was truely touching to see waves and waves of pink throughout the entire stadium. So cool!
Also, Melissa said she will be beginning her concert tour June 17...so I'm wondering if she will be too busy to appear on race day? I guess we will soon find out!
Sincerely, Tonya -
Were you guys up all night? Oh yeah, its only 6:30 a.m. now! Ok No bandanas on our heads if that is what you want. I have to admit that gives me chemo flashbacks well find a place for them though, they sound great! Thanks Chris for getting them and the stickers.
Ha ha Irene I like the beer can hat w/straw. That would be unique. You will have to see the pink flamingo hats. There is a big team that wears them but, they really look hot.
I havent seen ANY junebugs yet! For some warped reason I find the bottle rockets with june bugs very funny. Theyre crusty go to the moon and just bounce back, right?
You should see 3Bears little dog (pretty please post some pics). It is adorable. If you havent seen Kats picture of her shaved cat, you HAVE got to see that. I meant to ask you why you shaved her but I see you explained it in a post. I laugh every time I see that.
Tonya I missed ME on ET. I think she will not be in the area for the one day but she WILL be in MI for the 3 day. I dont know the date of that. Maybe Sheryl Crow will be around though? Tonya you better find us so we can meet you!
Shel is a fundraising Queen! I think she will get some kind of prize for that since she is up in the top numbers. I think she should be hired by Komen or maybe bc.org? Either she has a knack for this or many friends.
Ok lets say the press is there. Do you want to remain anonymous? NotMe, are you a fast runner? You could be in pictures for probably being the only survivor runner. I saw very few runners last year and no survivors. You might have to make a mask out of the bandana. Put it over your face like a cowboy? Or cut eye holes and make a burka.
Anyone see fancys web page? Those horses are awesome!
It looks like Fishbones has some votes. Are any of these walking distance? Ill go with the crowd since I havent been to Greektown in years. Should we make reservations and are they open for lunch? The race is done about 10:30 a.m.
Thanks for the link Irene. Ill check it out and let everyone know what Im doing.
I hope I didnt miss anything. I have to seriously work today but Ill be back to check in!
Counting down -
When we moved into our house a few years ago, the previous owners apparently had left the garage and the shed/garage (separate bldg) that I use as my workshop open at night with the light on. It was June. They both had HUNDREDS of dead June bugs on the floor. It was sooooo gross. Gotta love those shop vacs. There is also a large light over the garage that came on automatically at night. The day we moved in our last load was after dark and there were June bugs all over the garage. Needless to say, we left the last load in the truck since there was no way I was walking past them. That light was disabled within days.
3bears - you're brave to walk outside at night this time of year.
Not Me - Thanks for taking care of the bandanas.
Which thread has the shaved cat photo?
Where are the horse photos? -

Just thought I'd post the above if anyone wants to do this. Sure sounds like us.
This is kat's cat!
Kay will have to post her website, I cannot find it right now!
I sent Racelady Jan and Kim email this morning. I had Jan blocked. My face is red - I'm sorry! I don't know how it happened. -
Nancy- Aren't you supposed to be working?
Thanks for the photo - how funny! I think I'll show it to my cats to try to keep them in line. -
Good idea Irene. I'll have to show my cat the picture so she doesn't feel so all alone being hairless. My hubby took her to school today for his kids to see. I told her she was going on a field trip. Shhh don't let her know that last year they got a kick out of her but said... "look at her butt!" Poor thing doesn't have hair to cover up her little bits of anatomy. At least she's not a male.
Yeah - I'm working - really!
Kats has this brillant idea about a sticker picture. I think we should take it offline to email though. Let me know what you think and I'll see if I can make them up.
(I might not get to them for a while though - this work stuff you know). -
Yea...I'm working too! We are open for lunch wherever, but will have to head out thereafter as we have to pick up our trailer around 2:30 and it is in Roseville. Not to sorry about us running fast...we are just running to finsh the race...thats all. Wishing all a great day!
-
oh god i'm cracking up......."volunteers should be warm and fuzzy" type people............i'm off the hook lol!
-
Shel38 - That's exactly what I thought when I saw the warm and fuzzy line! How funny.
Poor little kitty with the hairless butt.
The stickers are fine with me. -
Ok - maybe not "warm and fuzzy" but they can't ask for cynical with a morbid sense of humor. We don't want to scare all the newbies away! Of course, it doesn't take long to pick up this sense of humor from what I can see.
The stickers are really nice. Thanks Kats!
Shel is going to test the lip plumper stuff and tell us what it's like. Kimmytoo already has nice thick lips in her picture! Didn't you say you didn't have lips either Irene? I don't think I've seen shel's lips yet. Sorry about jumping around post topics if you haven't read that yet.
Are we walking to Greektown?
Do any of you who are coming early want to meet somewhere outside of Detroit? I know we are all scattered but I'm starting to get paranoid about going into Detroit alone. Fancy, you mentioned the meeting near one of the major highways. Do you still want to do that? Do you know where there is a park-n-ride stop?
My friends will not be staying for lunch with us and they are coming later so, I'm on my own. Booohooo! -
ok but here's the problem..........i had that cynical twisted sarcastic sense of humour "pre BC"!!!!!!!!!!!
I SHOW YA'LL MY LIPS ON SATURDAY LOL!
i have an idea so i'm goin shoppin.............i'm thinking water bottle (or beer bottle) cooler thingies for all............might not be pink but i'll see what i can find! if they're not pink then maybe i'll doctor them up a bit with ribbons or some other BC type paraphenalia (that i usually avoid like the plague!)
i'll let ya'll know by sundown! -
We're thinking of staying at the Double Tree on Southfield Fwy (as soon as I make the reservations that is)....anyone traveling into Detroit that way? We could stay somewhere else if anyone was interested in meeting up before the race.
We've got that free parking pass if anyone wants to take the chance and drive into Detroit with the 'Out of Staters' that have to be at the race before 7am to use the parking pass......pretty tempting HUH?? NOT!!
kats -
kats - I may take you up on this and maybe follow you in to Detroit? I'll talk to you soon offline.
Ok - I may have a celebrity for the Crazy Jacket....
I noticed that Jo Serrapere will be at the pre-expo on June 9th. This is what the web site says about her. "Singer-songwriter who has appeared on WDET and "Prairie Home Companion." Cool, hip, & inspirational music in the Survivor Room! Don't miss! To learn more: http://www.joserrapere.com/"
This is an email message I just received from Jo and the Willie Dunns.Quote:
Hi Nancy,
I'm not exactly sure where we are going to be on the 9th. Our bass players "friends down the block" organized it. And right now our bass player is the one who knows the location. I believe that it's a small private fund raiser for the Karmanos Cancer Center designed to co-ordinate in time with the Race for the cure pre-expo, but is not officialy part of it. So I don't think it's even near all the official stuff.
We are doing this private thing from 3 to 6, so that means we'll probabnly be tied up from at least 2 untill approx. 7:30 with the unpacking, setting up, tearing down and repacking of all the the gear.
We're all from the Detroit so for us this is a short drive to the performance. If you could let us know where you'll be at say 7 to 8, and after 8 as well, I'll ask Jo if she thinks we'll be able to meet you there on time and she and I would be glad to come over. If you have a cell phone you may want to leave the # with me in case we would have to cancell at the last minute (if we are able to arrange something)
Oh, by the way...the only reason we would cancell at the last minute is because...Jo's pregnant!!!..and she get's easily tired.
I hope we're able to work something out. I know the Jo would love to, and so would I (having recently lost a father to cancer). My mother also has had a few bouts with the disease as well but she just keeps on whipping it!!!
I hope we're able to connect. Feel free to call me, I usually let the answering machine pick up just so I don't end up talking to too many salesfolk. If I'm there I'll pickup, if not I'll get back to you ASAP.
Be well,
John
********** (phone number removed by me)
So, what do you think? The pre-expo is in Southfield. Anyone want to go with me if this works out? -
Hey, guys, we're #21 right now, out of ALL the groups! Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I saw that too......
Here's a special
to shel38 for her fundraising that really put us up there. -
i ain't done yet ha ha! thanks, it was easy because my mom is still a nurse where i used to work and they gave 550 dollars alone.........the reast was friends and family!
-
Wow you guys, you are really moving along!
Thanks for all of us! -
Guess What, I just got a reply from Kim Adams. I followed Irene's link and dropped her a line about the crazy jacket and our group at the race. This is her reply!
Quote:
Hi Nancy,
Of course I would be honored to wear the jacket. I am live in front of Comerica Park for the 8am show. I could possibly wear it on the air with permission. And/or we can do a photo. I am hosting the closing ceremony so I shouldnt be hard to find. I look forward to meeting you!
My best,
Kim
Below is The web page that Irene gave us again. Now, live??? I'm not going anywhere near a live camera! Honestly, I make enough of a doofus of myself without having all of channel 4 seeing me.
