Pain in Right Hip Joint???
Hi girls,
I'm back after taking some "time off" the boards and am now concerned about a dull ache that has steadily gotten worse over the past couple weeks in my right hip joint. I am so trying not to go to that "dark" place and am trying to chaulk it up to getting older, but as I mentioned to another lady here, it's so freakin scary not to know whether this is something normal for me at 50, or something more insidious. And no, my onc does not do any scans, blood work etc unless there are symptoms. Geez....crazy huh?
So at this point of course I am just trying to get through the Holidays (we are going out of town the day after Xmas) and not make too much of a fuss about it, and then decide a plan of action. Would you all suggest going to see my Primary Care or should I go straight to my Oncologist?
Damn I hate this disease.
Wishing you ALL peace and comfort through Xmas and in the New Year.
Love,
Sharon

Sharon, don't panic............I had right hip pain, bad a year ago. I thought without a doubt this damn thing had gone to my hip!!! Well I like you have an Onc. that does not do scans or tumor markers, However watches me like a hawk!!! So He told me first of all its a wierd place for the cancer to go, and also its usually caused from arthritus....HE SENT ME FOR A BONE SCAN, and they are great becuse there quick and easy.........The results came back clear in my hip, but I had arthritus in my right knee!! He told me that that could actually radiate up to my hip and be the main cause..................Here is the deal, my hip pain went away after about a year, sometimes it comes back . I don't worry about it anymore.......I really think you need to take advil, maybe some xanax or something to get you through the holidays and see if it gets better................I willl be 45 in april and we don't have the luxury of just blaming it on age, However 9 times out of 10 thats what it is!!!! We are living sharon, are surviving this disease. Have faith and believe it will be ok. I just found out that my liver is fine, they were not sure, they thought it might be something............it was not!!!! You r in my prayers and thoughts I know you are fine, I just do.........Try to enjoy the holidays......this stupid disease did not come overnight and it will not end overnight.................Don't stay inside and ride out the storm !!!!! .....dance in the rain baby!!!
I love you sister and I am here with you............please pm me if you need to talk

Hi, Sharon. I don't know for sure but I know I have read that if pain can be "changed" by movement, it's probably not mets. Like if stretching or bending or extending or moving a joint lessens or increases pain, it's not likely to be mets. I wish I could say for sure, as I am having a similar problem with my shoulder joint on my mx side. My shoulder has been killing me. But mostly when I lie on that side or move my shoulder in a way it doesn't want to go.
When is your next scheduled appointment with your onc?
-
It sounds like a bone scan is good course of action. I think it most likely a result of aging, and we all feel like we have aged too quickly with the estrogren stripped from our bodies.
Do you notice any changes in the pain with the weather?
-
Tectonic, I was told never to lie on the side with the axillary noce clearance again. How long ago was the MX?
-
hi, momine, it was a little over a year ago
-
Sharon-I had pain in my shoulder for 5 weeks. It went away..I am 39 and since this has all happened I just feel like I take a longer period to heal. I will say that now that I am 3 years out I am getting a lot of aches and pain. When you take advil does it get getter?
-
I've had pain in my right hip for about two weeks now. At times, the pain radiates down to my shins. I'm not sure if it's due to some heavy boxes I picked up at work or if that's where my Arimidex pains have landed for now (they devil one area of my body for a couple of weeks and then switch). I'm approaching my 5-year cancerversary, so I'm a little paranoid right now, but I'm willing to bet that mine is the Arimidex. Are you taking an anti-hormonal? It might be that or, as someone else mentioned, a bit of arthritis. But it sounds like something a number of us get the pleasure of experiencing! I find that exercise helps diminish the pain.
-
I am agreeing with Celtic Spirit on the AI SE. I've been on Arimidex or it's generic equivalent for over four years, and hip pains are the most frequent side effect I've had. Scans have only shown arthritis there and in other joints. Heck, I knew that before I had breast cancer, but of course, I always worry when they come back that this time, they're mets.
The fact that they eventually go away let's me know I am worrying for nothing. Of course, that always happens AFTER I've seen my onc and before I make an appointment for the scan he's written the prescription for. I have a drawer full of unused, outdated scan orders, lol.
Sharon, I would take some ibuprofen through the holidays and your trip, and then see your onc in the new year. I wouldn't worry. But since he doesn't do ANY scans or blood work (at least my onc does blood work, for what it's worth), he should comply with a bone scan order to ease your mind. Most insurance companies will ok one every two years. -
Nancy - I've had the same experience...about the time I start worrying about a new ache (usually two weeks) and get ready to call my onc, the pain goes away. Often, I can attribute the pain to something I've done...lift heavy boxes, tote lots of camera equipment, start a new exercise regimen, etc. I think the arimidex...and I hate to admit this, but age, too...contribute to the severity of the pain.
Ibuprofen helps me, so as Nancy suggested, try that for now. For some reason, my aches often hurt worse at night, esp. the one in my hip/lower back. Maybe that's due to the position of my body, or perhaps the distractions of the day are gone and the pain finds a clearer signal to my brain!

I am 66 and have had arthritis in most joints for years. However, like others, if it gets worse, I go right to the dark side.
But then I try to think - did I do some different physical activity? Or, if it were not to get better in 3 weeks, I would report it to the onc. One thing I learned from a doctor friend, whenever I am going to be especially physical e.g., gardening, I take an advil or two BEFORE I do the activity. Amazing difference, as it helps prevent inflammation! -
You all are the absolute BEST! I always know my sistahs will have my back when I go to that place I shouldn't.
Unfortunately Advil, etc does not seem to help and it does hurt when I'm in bed. Activity usually doesn't seem to make it worse, so I am just going to ride it out through the holiday and as you all suggested contact my Oncologist for a bone scan in January. I haven't had one in a while and although I know I'll probably be a basket case while waiting for the results I need to know one way or the other.
I can't thank you all enough for being here for me. Hugs and love to all of you!
Sharon

Yes, I think your plan of getting a bone scan is a good one. It is better to just know. Imagine how wonderful you will feel when it comes back clear. This is hard life to live, we are always in a state of some symptom that could be mets. I'm glad you've checked back in with us, although I understand why you stayed away. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and are able to put this worry in the back of your mind until January and then I hope the pain is gone by then!!!

Thanks again girls,
And I did forget to mention, yes, I am on Tamoxifen, thanks for reminding me Day. I've been on it for over 2 1/2 years and this just started about three weeks ago, so who know? And thanks Kathleen, it's good to "see" some of my old friends again. I'll be checking in.
Love,
Sharon

Also a reminder about Arnica gel. I am planning on using on both shoulders and a host of other places following my first x-country ski of the season.
Perhaps my right hip flexor too. I had forgotton about those!
Anyway, since most of these areas weren't bothering me 24 hours ago, suspect it's from the skiing!
Merry Christmas everyone. In case any of you are suspect things like "getting older", just got a much younger dancer friend of mine some serious soaking potions.
Off to bed soon. Suspect that Santa will be slathered with Arnica gel 24 hours hence after dashing down all those chimneys. - Claire
