How true
You can spend less money by looking for bargains and getting a good deal on something. We do send money to some ... budget is tight for them, that's what they need and I just can't see wasting $$$ on something they may not even want when I know they can use the cash. Being able to pay the electric bill can be a great gift if that is what they decide to do with it. We always add a card or two for dinner out and a couple of small surprises too though.I've had fun with the grandkids in FL this year. Rather than a big gift we sent 4 packages of smaller stuff during the month to be opened upon receipt. They have enjoyed it according to step-daughter. And I have gotten hooked on Ty Beanie Boos.
Now for my daughter who lives here close it's easy. I can find a zillion things for her.
Athena ... I see some phone calls in your future to sort out who goes with what

Too funny....the adorable pic. of Spike. and all the suggestions re: his thoughts. I can't think of a thing. His tolerance knows no bounds, but then he is captive.
Also enjoyed First Family pics and others with it. What a gorgeous family and I loved Michele's dress.
For X-mas this yr. I got exactly what I wanted. Daughter and her hubby relocated here to our little hideout in the woods by the lake and I don't need anything else. I have been overflowing since they got here. SIL has been working ( oil-fields ) since day 8 of their arrival. Daughter hasn't found work yet....but thank goodness with one working a world full of pressure is already off. Daughter is a Pet Stylist ( fancy term for groomer ) though she is very, very good. Has done it for 20 yrs. so has an ace if nothing in a different field turns up.
Hope you all had a gorgeous day.....snowing here. Wow !!!!

What a wonderful gift you received this year, Jackie! And great that your SIL found work so quickly.
-
Jackie, priceless.

Hey folks -- It's December 21 in almost half the world now. Do you suppose that half is still there?????!!!!!
Can't believe that 33 schools in Michigan were closed today because of widespread fears about the end of the world. Hmmmmmm

Jackie -- So good to hear about your bestest Christmas present.
-
I saw someone posting from New Zealand, on BCO, a few minutes ago....all is well there.
Jackie - how wonderful...your early xmas present.
Wendell updates?
-
Guess I was asleep at the wheel......I had no idea the world was ending. Must have been preoccupied with work and buying groceries, filling my gas tank for $2.98 a gallon and other odds and ends. Methinks I'd better start paying attention here. I'd hate to be the last one to know.

SusieQ,
Are you still there? The rest of the world is waiting to hear!!
-
Hmm. Should I stay up until midnight since tomorrow the world ends? Yawn. Nope.
-
Turns out the end of the world was only for Boehner.
-
We're going to a Christmas party tomorrow night. I asked my friend if she thought the world was going to end at the beginning of the day or at the end. She said, "With all the cooking and cleaning I'm doing for this party, it better be the end of the day!"

I'm starting to wish I had been more open about the mental health issues over the years. There is such a stigma, as someone said, and I just worked so hard to make our family appear normal. Our friends, church, scouts, all knew the background and worked with us as best they could to help the kids. I really don't know how i could've made it without my pastor. Their birth father was killed in a bar fight when they were our foster children, then the mom starved their baby sister to death and ended up in jail. Someone mentioned stress as a cause of BC. I've often wondered about that. It was in 1987 when I got it the first time and we had been dealing with these parents and the courts sending them back to the parents, then back to us, for several years by then. The father treated the children as his PROPERTY and was not going to allow the state to take his children away from him. Oh, and did I mention the father was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic and on disability. I can't imagine what would've happened to the children had the father not died. He would not have let them go peacefully. Once mom was in jail for murdering the baby sister, she agreed to sign them over to us. Now, can you see why I made excuses for them and enabled them .... They had been through so much by the time they were 5 and 6 years old! The children did have some very good psychologists over the years but it was more difficult to find good psychiatrists. They definitely want to throw meds at the problem. Also Roy was on a SIDS monitor as an infant. Had surgery for a Peloric stenosis when he was 3 months and was a code blue. He had to sleep right next to our bed so I could pick him up and get his breathing started again everytime the alarm went off. That went on for a year. Oh, how we love them when they are so needy. So, stress .... cancer, I have definitely wondered about a link. Amazing how many of us share some of the same stressors. Hmmmm ....
I loved the autocorrects. It is so good to belly laugh!! -
I only wish it were the end of the line for Boehn Head.
-
Cherry, another good belly laugh! Thanks, I needed that. Now, I must go to sleep. Only 2 hours sleep last night and tomorrow is a busy day!! Damn that decadron!
-
Glenna ... you should be very proud of what you have done for those kids. It may not always turn out perfectly but they would have had no chance at all without you. You are my newest hero.
Read this today and got a chuckle out of it ... some snippets. I like the Maya.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/19/maya-apocalypse-2012-maya_n_2330961.html?icid=maing-grid7|maing10|dl17|sec1_lnk2&pLid=248237
"I've come here to ask some actual Maya people about the so-called apocalypse said to be prophesied by Coba's Stela 1, a chunk of elaborately carved limestone much scrutinized by day-trippers down from Cancun."
"December 21, it should be noted, is the end of every Maya calendar year"
"The only person I find willing to engage with the prophecy is Jeremias Kulaak Paal, who works as a waiter in Bahia Principe. Jeremias slips a memory card into his Nokia phone and shows me a video explicating the prophecy and its connection to nearby Coba. He says he was curious after seeing reference to the apocalypse on the Internet and went to see the stone. After that he had some questions for his 109-year-old grandfather.
"My grandfather told me that there will be a change after the new year," says Jeremias, who has just grown out of his teens. "He says that there will be more peace and prosperity going forward, so I think we should look forward to it."
This cheerful perspective actually lines up neatly with what archeologists and anthropologists say about the significance of this new year.
"The world isn't going to end, but it might get better," concludes Jeremias.
He's friendly and plainly enjoys trying out the English words he's learned on the job. I ask him if he'll go into Coba and celebrate with the tourists. He shakes his head.
"We're going to get beers and have a party in town," he says. "Nothing big."
-
We're still here - but we still have 6.5 hours to go before the day is over

-
The only thing the prediction is right on is the death of Boehner, as our bartender points out, the death of the Reagan Revolution, and hopefully the death of the Tea Party. What shocking lack of statesmanship.
-
Checking in, Suzie. Still there?
-
Yes, proof of life, please? Suzie, Jezza and Alyson....
-
My brother in Melbourne, Australia says the world there is extant not extinct.. Enjoy the shortest day, longest night, first day of winter in the north. Longest day, shortest night and first day of summer in the antipodes.
-
Happy Winter Solstice, everyone! Except Suzie and Allyson -- Happy Summer Solstice to you both!
-
Sigh of relief, although if the world does end today, that means I don't have to clean the kitchen.
-
That thought had occurred to me too ;-)
-
All the kids will be home this weekend and the snow is softly falling. So, my vote is for the world to NOT end.
Off to work I go.
-
Lindasa, regarding school closings in Michigan. My daughter's a teacher and still has school today but she was getting tons of texts and emails that people were worried that wackos might do something today. The emails and texts were asking the teachers to please try to calm any parents they might encounter. My grandkids go to school in a different district and still had school today. Everything seemed fine when I dropped them off. Also it's snowing so some of the rural districts might be closed or delayed due to that, although last I checked we're only supposed to get a couple of inches in this area.
-
What Athena said about the death of Boehner, Tea Party et.al'. Hard to believe the government all going home yesterday -- poof. Politics, isn't it a glorious thing????
Dusting of snow here after the 40 mile winds of yesterday. Feels like the season at least though it is due to warm up fairly quickly. Ok with me. I don't mind the snow, I more mind the really puny ones. I'm moderate, and don't want to overdo anything.......but a couple good snows during the winter just make me happy. Especially back here in the woods where we don't get salt which soon turns everything an unattractive shade of gray.....along with a need to go though the car wash to get it all off your car. Ah....the joys.
I hope you all have a fantastuc day.

Did anyone happen to hear Rep. Tim Huelskamp on Morning Joe this morning? I think it was the end of the world for him too.
-
Now, see y'all (no offense intended to Southerners), the problem is that we have made schools gun-free! See? [Watching the NRA press conference.]
-
I'm beginning to think this End-of-the-World thing only applies to certain individuals, not the whole world. Uh, watching the NRA press conference too.
-
I didn't think I could dislike the NRA more than I already did. I was wrong.
