    Hello to everyone...haven't been on in a few days...had a friend in from out of town, so we were busy running here and there.  Last night was our big Winterfest Boat Parade here in Ft. Lauderdale and we were fortunate to have an invite to a private home on the river.  It was an awesome sight as the boats were up close and personal rather than far away when we watch them on the Intracoastal Waterway.  I got lots of photos but don't know how to download them here.  This event really kicks off the holiday season here and gets everyone in the mood for Xmas.  I feel I have a little more spirit today...LOL!

    Waiting for my DS to return from his motorcycle ride so we can take him out to lunch.  I always worry when he's out riding that thing...wish it would sell...but then he would probably just buy another one!

    I had to stop watching the news...the horror of that tragedy is so depressing...when will we realize that something must be done to reign in this violence in our country.  Let's start with the violent video games and then move to assault weapons.  What purpose to these things serve...someone please tell me!  I'm willing to give up a few "freedoms" to protect our children and their future.  OK..that's my political commentary for the day.

    I think that we would have gotten into a lot of trouble together in the 70s if we knew each other. I hope that you rest up and let everyone else do the work

    I would not recommend that black bean soup I made either.  It was awful.  I want Susan's ravioli.

    I'm going to help a friend pack for her move today.  I won a raffle for a double radio flyer filled with boy toys,  (No not Boy Toys sheesh, ladies!  ) for boys under 5 at a nursing home and I'm giving it to her single daughter for  Christmas! She has 3 sons under that age.

    susan - beautiful pics of the ravioli!  Making me a little hungry - anesthetic always takes away my appetite, but that looks yummy!

    apple - yes, rest and let others do, thinking of you and sending you strength!

    carberry - DS loves to cook!  And shop!  What is up with that?  DD like to shoot and fish, and drives a truck!  Funny kids!  I am looking forward to DS coming to visit - have some fun planned and my in-laws will be in Florida too so we will have a visit with them!

    Michelle, thanks for the insight on Apple's absence.

    DH and I and another couple drove into New Orleans last night to see the lights at Celebration in the Oaks at City Park.  Some of the displays were magical.  Afterwards we had dinner at Drago's in Metairie.  Love their chargrilled oysters, which we had as an appetizer.  DH and I both had the oysters with pasta as our entre so we had our oyster fix.  The meal was delicious. 

    This same couple delivered a huge container of home-made Christmas cookies when they came to pick us up.  I started sampling the cookies when I got up this morning.  This has not been a good day on WW.

    Christmas/Birthday party at my parents house, mom turned 78.  Ham and salads, fresh fruit..just kinda grazed all afternoon.  Lots of Christmas deserts and birthday cake of course but sweets are not really my thing.  Liked the salty ham..gonna pay for that tomorrow.

    I'm starting to get mom's (she's 94) help interperting recipes.  This one was typed.  It is on onion skin paper and looks like it was down the stack of carbons and someone had a light touch on the typewriter.  The paper is falling apart and I think I got it right... I've reformatted it a bit.  If anyone would like to see what the paper looked like, PM me and I'll send along a scan.

    There is no title, nor credit for the recipe..it's on a small slip of paper.

    2 small (11 oz.) cans Mandarin oranges

    1  ?2 can crushed Pineapple  (Note, the question mark is mine.  The character before the 2 doesn't look like a 1 (small l).  It looks more like a 4, but I'm not sure what to make of that.  I suppose it might be a #2 can, which mom thinks is about 20 ounces.

    2 boxes Orange Jello

    1 six ounce can frozen orange juice

    1 box Jello Lemon Pudding

    1 Carton whipping cream.

    Drain off liquid from the fruits, add enough water to equal 3 cups, dissolve the orange jello into the liquid, heat (no need to boil), add frozen orange juice, stir until dissolved, cool then add fruit, mix.  Turn into Pyrex disk, chill until firm.  Make pudding as directed omitting eggs if called for, and use water instead of milk, cook as directed.  chill, fold into the cream whipped, Use as a top layer for the fruit.  May be served with a sprinkling of cheese and lettuce for salad or plain as dessert.

    I bet that is a #2 can... I have few recipes from my youth that call for that size. It is indeed equal to a 20 oz can (or roughly 2 1/2 cups) of crushed pineapple....

    Dinner with a friend tonight. Made a lamb stew served with roasted vegetables over polenta. Topped with gremolata to add a touch of freshness. Very nice supper.

    New Orleans is a town I must visit. I bet that the Christmas lights are beautiful.

    Michelle, thanks for the update on Apple.

    Apple, I hope you start to feel better after RADS are done, and that your strength keeps up til you are done.

    Eric, when I had something I couldn't read, I copied it much darker. Sometimes that helped. If some spots were TOO dark, try erasing the copy where there is too much toner. Sometimes that works. But you have to play with it, and I had good luck with some carbon copies from my mom and dad. Good luck.

    That ravioli looked good Susan. I am still trying to get back in the swing of things, but now am adding some more into my routine. I think I am going to do the vaccine trial SpecialK is in Baltimore. It's an hour and 40 minutes each way from home. I am at six months from tx, so it's now or never.



    Boy, New Orleans at Christmas sounds good. I bet the weather is perfect too.



    The only thing worthwhile reportingon the dinner front was a Hanukkah dinner at my in-laws. We had some cheese first, then a good salmon recipe, with some spinach and some noodle kugel, then chocolate cake and pumpkin bread. The kids had tater tots and gluten free chicken nuggets. My 7 y.o. Nephew has celiac disease. One niece made chocolate chip cookies that were gluten free with rice flour. They tasted good!



    I am also heart broken about the school shooting. I have never even held a gun, but do understand hunters wanting it, or people who go to a range and shoot pistols, or someone who knows how to handle it and wants a gun to feel safe in their house. But I don't get why anyone would have or want automatic weapons except for some kind of mass shooting. Is there any other purpose? Why are they allowed?

    Kay, your Hanukka dinner sounds very interesting.  Completely outside my experience.  You pose the question many of us are asking:  Why own assault weapons?  The answer to why one can own them in the USA is simple.  The NRA, which is so powerful that the politicians in Washington are scared to oppose the organization.  The NRA has shown its muscle by going into states and waging campaigns against candidates it opposes. 

    My bil is on facebook this morning stating that the problem in the Conn. school was not enough guns INSIDE the school to shoot the shooter!  He advocates everyone carrying guns!  I do not kid.  And he's a big NRA member and wouldn't miss a gun show.  He does keep his guns locked in a safe.  To his great dismay, IL is not a concealed carry state.  Here in LA, you can bet that a lot of the cars in the parking lot have guns inside them.  And a certain number of women have small guns in their handbags.  I do not object to hunting guns and revolvers that aren't rapid fire.  We always had guns in the house when I was a kid and dh owns several guns his uncle gave him.  The problem there is that I forget about them and occasionally we do have children in the house.

    Susan, the weather in New Orleans this time of year could range from 70's to 30's.  This year we've seen a lot of the 70's, which doesn't make me happy.  I look forward to some 50's and 60's in Dec. and Jan.  Our cold weather never lasts longer than 2 or 3 days, then back into a warming trend.  It is nice that we have blossoms in winter.  My sansanquas have been gorgeous this year.  The yellow cassias are blooming and most people plant pansies in the fall to bloom through the winter and into the spring.  The camellias are blooming.  I have all those blossoms in my yard.

    I'm home from my port surgery, but not before stopping for breakfast - I had banana stuffed french toast smothered with strawberries and whipped cream.  It's probably not what they had in mind when they told me to stick to a light diet today...LOL!  I feel fine - no nausea or any other after-effects.  And my port site feels fine (could still be numb) but I am icing it as instructed.   We had an exciting ride to the hospital as the roads were full of slushy greasy snow.  But we made it OK.  I'll be spending the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the sofa; and if I'm really lucky, I'll take a nap.  I stayed up way too late last night watching football.

    Carole - three years ago we went to New Orleans for NYE, then cruised out of NO on Jan 2.  It was in the 20's when we came back into port a week later.  I didn't think it got that cold there but that was a really cold winter everywhere.

    luvrving - glad you are home from what sounds like a smooth port-installment - and wow on the breakfast!  I am still in that period of no appetite from anesthetic, so have not been eating much.

    carole - I also live in a concealed carry state - I assume that everyone I see driving or walking around has a gun.  It is truly crazy and it does make me nervous.  I see absolutely no reason for the average, non-law enforcement, person to have an automatic weapon.  Some people say they hunt with them but until the animals start shooting back I think it is overkill - so stupid, and one of the reasons things like this happen.

    kayg - yay on the possible trial enrollment - it really was easy and I am so glad I did it.  I felt good doing something to advance the science and potentially get a personal benefit at the same time.

    Michelle, I remember that winter 3 yrs ago.  DH and I went to FL in Jan and towed our 5th wheel camper to Lakeland, where our rv friends have a hookup at their house.  We visited Epcot and nearly froze our "arses" off.  When we were ready to depart and slid the slides back into the rv, sheets of ice fell off. 

    Wonderful aroma of pot roast wafting through the house.  DH went to the supermarket, consulted with a butcher in the meat dept., bought the roast and is cooking it with veggies.  I'll cook some greens that need to be cooked and may make a salad. 

    I finished up the last of the Christmas shopping today and the REI gift card I'd ordered for a gift arrived in the mail.  Ho, ho, ho.

    Michelle....too funny about that "light" breakfast! Glad the port procedure went well, and hope it is still pain free.



    Carole, I love that your DH has such independent food shopping and cooking skills!

    My DH is getting a "bit" closer in that he is signing us both (!) up for a cooking event with the resident chef at Volante Farms in town. I guess that's a start. He is the kind of guy who embraces new things, so this could be the start of something good! :)

    Volante Farms sure has grown since I lived out in those suburbs. Cooking classes? Wow.

    Dinner tonight was a leek and potato soup with a tiny amount of sausage. I love this soup. True bistro, cold weather food. I topped with some fresh chives, and made some croutons from a stale loaf of sourdough bread. Perfect supper. My only regret is that I didn't have enough leeks to make a double batch.

    Michelle, your light breakfast sounds like the Friendly Toast. Too funny.

    Yes, Susan, you would not recognize Volante Farms. Young Dave (their oldest kid, my son's friend) and his two younger sibs have taken over the business and expanded it in many ways...and they now have a chef preparing meals for people to take out..and they've had two "dinners in the fields" events. I learned this past weekend however, that they may not do it this year since it is a money loser and a huge undertaking. :(



    I cleaned out and organized another couple of kitchen cabinets and a three shelf pantry today, more food circa 2004-2010. Makes me glad that I am now home and can keep better track of my inventory...this was really wasteful!



    Then I baked some biscotti and also made dough for mexican chocolate chip cookies, which I'll bake tomorrow. At dinner time, since DH wasn't here, I decided to try a can of soup that I found in my pantry. The date was fine, the soup was awful...so I threw it out!

    Tomorrow I'll make a nice kale sausage soup, while doing some more baking.



    I saw a nice recipe for smashed pea/ricotta crostini with mint, which I think I'll also make for the "meet the baby" gathering this coming Sunday. This will give me a chance to make my own ricotta later this week...wish me luck!

    Yesterday was a baking day. Made a fruited nut bread, English muffins and cookie doughs. Will bake the cookies on Wednesday as well as some soft rolls for a Christmas ham I'll be having. I had planned on pepper steak for dinner but DH was craving breakfast so we had eggs and sausage and a big treat of a waffle. Now it's pepper steak tonight.

    Tonight's dinner is "same song second verse"--warmed up pot roast and veggies.  Warmed up greens.

    Totally exhausting day following a night of not enough sleep. [Totally forgot my pills last night and felt like crap all day.] On my way home from my client's office, I stopped by Bob's Italian Deli. I was planning to buy some of their frozen meatballs, but "settled" for some freshly made pork sausage. Dinner was some cooked tiny little pastas mixed with the leftover ravioli cheese stuff. I simmered some simple marinara sauce, mixed that in and threw it into the oven. Browned the sausage and simmered in the remaining tomato sauce. Not a bad simple supper. I just couldn't do anything complicated tonight.

    We made tacos for supper and now we're watching A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott.  It's DH's favorite version.  Big day tomorrow - PET/CT scan and appt with the RO.    Port site seems to be healing nicely, I can remove the bandage tomorrow morning.  We'll probably grab a late lunch after my scan which will screw up suppertime.  Might be a popcorn night.
