So...whats for dinner?

Incomprehensible! I just want to magically think that if I hope hard enough, this will not have happened.....my thoughts and hope for all these families, that they have the enormous strength it will take to cope with such unbearable loss and trauma. They have become additional victims of our failed system to treat the mentally ill and yet generously grant guns.
When will this stop??!!
Peace, everyone..... -
This is just sickening. My breaking heart goes out to these people, so tragic and senseless.
-
How does a parent not know that their child has guns and is capable of killing them or has the desire to kill them? At what point do you call authorities to give them a heads up of what you beleive your child is capable of? Do we really bury our heads in the sand when it comes to our own children?
Prayers for those families. How will those kids ever feel safe enough to go back to school?
-
I lived very near this community when we lived in Trumbull, CT. This is so hard to even imagine. If we can't treat the mentally ill, we cannot prevent these tragedies, and that is frightening. And if we continue to make it easy to get a gun, there is nothing to prevent a lunatic from going on a shooting spree. We need a national conversation on gun control.
-
Carrie,
I do think that as parents we do want and need to believe that we have raised decent human beings which most likely leads to denial even when confronted with overwhelming evidence to the contrary....
And yes... How will those poor kids ever feel safe going to school and how will their parents ever feel safe sending them again....
The images being shown are just breaking my heart... The anguish photos of those who's children died contrasted with sheer relief of those reunited are very difficult to watch....
Just goes to show... you never know what will happen... I hope everyone hugs their loved ones tonight and lets those they care about know they are loved....
Let me start.... Even though I don't post as often here as I would like, I do read and keep up with you all that way.... I still say this is one of the friendliest threads on this site all due to the wonderful ladies here... Luv you all! -
Oops, family Room, LOL
God, I just can not understand this tragedy.
-
Deb- Know you have joined mine and Lauries club of Oops lol!
It is so heartbreaking and your are so right Seaside this is the best thread here and Love all of you.
-
I cannot bear to watch another minute of it...
I thought I'd let everyone know that Apple posted on Facebook today. I don't know for sure how she's doing but it's encouraging to see her posting somewhere.
I love this group of gals! And Seaside, it's always good to hear from you!
Bedo - we had a nice dinner at the Copper Door tonight, thank you so much. The restaurant was very busy so we sat at a "common" table in the lounge with several other people. It was fun to meet and talk to new people! DH and I had red sangria, shared a bosc pear salad with spiced nuts, and had the "bar" plate of fried chicken (one piece) and fries. It was just the right size and delicious, although next time we'll substitute one of the fries for a veggie. We didn't eat all of the fries (and don't need to eat them all) so a little broccoli or spinach would be a better option.
Funny story - yesterday my hubby had an eye appointment, I told him I was going out for a few things and he said he'd pick up what I needed. One of the errands was to stop at this huge florist shop and pick up a Christmas wreath for our front door. First, he couldn't find the florist shop - we pass it at least 6 times a week, it's huge and all decorated inside and out, and I don't quite know how he has missed it. He called me, I gave him more specific directions and I didn't hear from him until he came home...without a wreath. He said that they were all artificial and cost more than $200. WTH??? So today, I did a little Christmas shopping and decided to check it out for myself. I walked out of there with a huge, real, 16" wreath with a fabulous ribbon for $16.99. I don't think he asked for help...LOL!
-
The shootings make me both sad and angry. I own guns and am teaching DD how to shoot...she is almost at the competitive shooter level.....so, to me guns are a just 'a thing around the house' and I just can't understand what makes someone go crazy and do such things..........
-
Michelle,
Had noticed that we hadn't heard from Apple in awhile and was hoping she was doing OK.... Good to hear that she is posting to Facebook although sure miss her posts here... Lol on DH and the wreath.... Why oh why is asking for help such a tough thing for the guys? -
Michelle- Don't know why our DH can't do a simple task lol! But yet they are so great in all other areas. I'm glad Apple is at least posting some where. Hope she is doing ok.
Had a nice time out with friends place was so busy and took forever to get our food. I had fish taco's that were just OK.
Leaving tomorrow to go to Portland DH has 3 different appointments so instead of coming back the 2 hours we are just staying there until Friday, then driving to see my dad and styaing with him for 2 or 3 days so maybe back home next Sunday. We will be gone about 9 days, I will try to check in on my phone while we are gone. Hope everyone stays safe. Love and hugs to you all.
-
Debbie - safe travels and enjoy your visit with your dad.
-
I, too, was worried about Apple.
Eric -
Safe travels Deb Enjoy your Dad.
Michelle So much easier to just do it ourselves. Appreciate the offer and the half effort though.
Glad Apple is posting..miss her here though.
Christmas party tonight...no cooking maybe a big late lunch so we dont eat as many appetizers at the party.
-
Thanks for sharing that about Apple, Michelle. Her absence here is always a concern.
So do you suppose if wreaths and other elusive items came with hi-tech gadgets tucked within them, they might be easier for our DHs to find?
Apologies, Eric!
Debbie, have a safe trip and a good visit with your dad!
Carrie, enjoy your party tonight! We'll be attending one that we have enjoyed every year for decades. We see all the folks we raised kids with, many we don't now see too often, and it is so much fun to catch up on everyone's family's lives.
Last night we took a dinner cruise on Boston Harbor (don't ask why...it was free). I had salmon with cous cous, which was surprisingly good for mass dining room food.
My big news....I have logged in almost seven hours of sleep for two nights in a row. So exciting! -
Hello all - sorry I have been MIA - I had my last trip to Washington D.C. for the vaccine trial the first week of Dec., a PET scan last Monday (normal result) then had fat grafting surgery yesterday, so was trying to prepare for the holidays in between because I was not sure how I would be feeling after the surgery. Things went well and I am doing fine, but I am glad I have very little pending and can rest a little before the arrival of DS on Thursday. I need to go back and read all the pages I missed but just wanted to say hi in the meantime!
-
I don't mind that a bit. :-)

Safe travels Debbie and I hope the appts go well and your Dad is feeling good.
Michelle, "one"? Sangria? You disappoint me lol
Glad you're back Special K and that things went well
Good on the sleeping Lacey! Unfortunately, I have the opposite problem. This is one of my favorite songs

Anyone have any ideas on how to make spagetti and a regular jar of spagetti sauce taste good very easily? Anchovies? Thanks! "vegetarian" anchovies haha have a hard time feeling sorry for them
-
Oh, and I think that I want to be alone today. No other voices except the cats, and they better keep pretty quiet. I want to sleep and read and make my bad meals and watch trashy TV. I'm sorry that I'm not returning my friend's calls, but not so sorry that I won't call them until tomorrow. I think that I'll walk the deaf-blind old poodle next door to the store. I am stressing about other health issues. Maybe I'll make a fire. I hope that everyone else is doing what they want this weekend.

-
bedo - I usually add some sauteed mushrooms and onions, and extra oregano and basil to bottled spaghetti sauce to perk it up. Sounds like good comfort food for you this weekend!
-
Specialk Hope you get a nice break for the holidays. glad everything is going well. When DS gets home have him help you out.
Bedo so sorry you are worried about some health issues..nothing serious I hope. Your day sounds like heaven....just peace and quiet....with a little junk food.
Lacey Thanks I will and you also. this party is at my girlfriends house and because we never get to get dressed up, we make this a formal and everyone has to wear fancy dresses and the men in suits and ties.
-
Been an odd week. But we ate anyhow. Last night, I made a Fish Chowder. My chowder is an old-fashioned version, not those thickened restaurant ones. Render some bacon, and remove the crispy bits. Then sautee some shallots or onions with fresh thyme and a bit of salt. When the shallots are just about to brown, add the cubed potatoes until they are coated with the fat and shallots. Add some dry white wine and reduce by half. Then add fish stock. I use a quart for two people. Simmer until the potatoes are cooked. Add diced fish and about 2 tbls of cream [the real deal.] The fish should be fully cooked within 3 minutes. Don't overcook. If you have stock in the freezer, this supper takes about 40 minutes start to finish, including the mise en place.
Tonight, I am doing a project- Five cheese ravioli with roasted tomato sauce. Right now, the ricotta is "sitting". When it gets to 100º F, I will add the rennet and then begin the straining. The ravioli pasta is also resting. I recently bought a really cool spring loaded ravioli tool and I can't wait to try it. The sauce is one of the ones we froze this summer. I will serve the raviolis on sauteed garlic and spinach, and top with the sauce. The pasta dough ratio is a new one for me. I am crossing my fingers that it will be good.
Bedo, hope the health things work out in your favor.
LuvRVing, did you see the review of the Tuscan Kitchen near you? It was in the Globe. Not sure what day... I read most of this week this morning.

-
Bedo - yeah, my alcohol tolerance is pretty disappointing these days
But it was a very good Sangria, they had to make a fresh batch. I guess people think of it more of a summer drink. I remember when you couldn't get iced tea here because it was a "summer drink." But then, how do you explain any fountain drink with ice when it's below zero outside??? I hope your health issues are nothing serious and you can relax a bit. Welcome back, SpecialK!
Susan - I am with you on the chowder, I like a "milky" consistency rather than one where you can stand up your spoon. And I did read the review of the Tuscan Kitchen including their new grocery store in The Globe. I think it was last Sunday. We've been there a few times - fabulous ciabbatta bread, homemade pastas, sauces, a butcher shop and some good looking pastries. Homemade ravioli? Girl, you are ambitious!!!
I hope all you party gals have fun tonight! I am relaxing on the sofa while DH has gone out Christmas shopping. He's going to call me later and see what I want for supper. Depending on where he ends up, I may ask for Chinese.
-
The ravioli are, and were, really, really good. Here they are drying and then dressed for dinner.

Beautiful Susan!
Today was the family German themed Christmas party which was great fun. I was somewhat disappointed in the sauerbraten as I thought it was on the dry side, but the gravy was good and my sil made egg noodles (with the pasta maker that I gave her one Christmas, yet I don't have one, go figure) to go with it, which made it palatable. Most of it got eaten, so I guess it was good enough lol. Next year is Chinese, yay! I make a mean hot and sour soup!
We ate freely today, so dinner is grilled cheese and tomato soup. -
Bedo, I'll add my wishes that the health worries are, or turn out to be, minor.
Special K. Good to see your typing again. I'm glad you had an easy time and also are able to get some rest. Rest can be hard to come by this time of year!
Debbie. Have a good trip. Hopefully you too will be able to sit back and relax.
The buzzer is going off....I'm trying an experiment with sweet potatoes...I'm making them "mashed" like the normal mashed potatoes and adding some clove and cinnamon. I tasted some at work and I think that's what was in the sweet potatoes.
Edited to add... To get the texture right, I added orange juice until it "looked smooth" and then cinnamon and clove until it "tasted right". It turned out pretty well. DD said it was the first time she liked sweet potatoes.
-
Thanks for the hellos and welcome back - a little more sore today, but had a shower which was great! Trying to balance resting and being still with all those little nagging chores... My DH is a champ - he went out and did some Christmas shopping today. He actually went and bought "skinny" jeans for DD - wish I was a fly on the wall... Love him!
-
Oh Susan, you bring me back to my favorite Aunt Judy's lively house (the soul of the family)where the Italian sisters frequently made ravioli. Beautiful! Not sure why I have never attempted these...maybe because I'm not confident about working with "dough". Better get over that! Looks scrumptious....love all those layers on your final dish!
Just returned from our yearly favorite party...was particularly delightful this year catching up with everyone..lots of fun generational stories as the grandchildren come into our lives.
Prior to this party, we stopped in to our next door neighbors' where they were having a bourbon tasting party. Well, I do not drink bourbon (not straight, certainly!) so did not evaluate, but enjoyed her wonderful food, and "monitored" DH so his participation would not impair his ability to function at the next party. Worked out fine....:)
Special, so good to hear that things went well for you.... -
(((Apple))) posted this on the Brain Mets Sisters thread a couple hours ago...
"hi all.. I am really not doing very well. I can hardly stand without wobbling. i walk like a little old lady and simply wait for mylegs to work. I can't get in and out of the car without my dear husband. Everyone is doing my work for me. i love it. i need to rest rest rest. i guess is it is the brain mets mixed with radiation.. another week or two to go. wish i had better news. i quit my Sunday job.. travelling down to Baldwin, even with my chaffeur was a bit too much. i can clean the kitchen and cook, but more often than not, just wait for someone else to do it."
Sending love and hope to Apple and her family. Wishing that the radiation helps knocks the brain mets into submission.
