A little diversion.

awwwweeeeee....the lab on the bottom left looks like my darling Athena (may she rest in peace in dog heaven).
ETA: Just added an ETA to two posts above (if that makes sense).
-
Did anyone here in any way refer to the perpetrator as a victim? I know I didn't.
Whatever drove him is part of the "why" that resonates in all our collective consciousness. We can just grab for the simplistic "evil" explanation as the simple minded will do or we can recognize that among us are damaged human beings who can and will act out their madness....and may never raise much of a red flag until its too late.....and among us are damaged individuals who would never hurt anyone but cannot function independently.
Until we humans figure out more about the brain and how it derails and whether that can be changed, heartbreaking atrocities like this will happen again and again.
ETA: off my soapbox. Need to indulge in some TV escapism from the sadness. -
Permission to rant:
Feeling absolutely hopeless about Christmas this year. I was going to do some productive "getting ready" today - er - like buy presents, for one! Then I make the mistake of visiting my mailbox and find a letter from the IRS saying I owe loads of money in taxes. Not loads. A relative pittance, actually, but I am not exactly swimming in cash at the moment. I've no idea why - my IQ on that topic is about 10. That is, they mention a reason but it makes no sense to me. So.....either I pay huge amounts of cash to a lawyer (again, the word "huge" being relative) - much more than the actual tax owed -- or I shut up and pay up.
Or I pen a sob story and hope for compassion?
Feeling very anti-government right now. I have two deadly illnesses, I do my best to pay my taxes (meaning, I used software programs that are supposed to do it all for me) and I an being busted in the kneecaps.
Write your congressman, you say? I live in the seat of government of the world's most powerful country, and my congressman --congresswoman, actually-- does not have the right to vote except in committee!
Even my normally serene psychiatrist was outraged - he gave me the kneecaps metaphor!
TYFLTMR!
(Thank You For Listening To My Rant)
-
Damn, Athena, what a time to get that kind of mail. I understand your rant. I'd be ranting, too. Is there any recourse with the software program you use? I think turbo tax offers some support. Rant all you want. Hope it all works out!
-
I'm not ready but Ray and Lilah are. These are the two contestants. Which one?

or

-
Thank you Glenna- and hope you are feeling better!
Blue - the top one. The bottom one looks a bit fossil-like to me.
-
He looks like an old soul. LOL!
-
Intermission time, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep about to get all slinky.
I vote for both. Twice the love, twice the personality, and twice the puppy house training. Ooh that last one never fun. -
I couldn't handle two of them. Lilah was easy to train and so was Virgil. Hopefully Winston (a name we're thinking of) will be as smart.
-
The fella on the bottom looks like the most interesting dog in the world.
I cannot speak or think of certain things today. -
I like the little gray one-and I think he looks most like a "Winston".
Mary
-
He does kinda pull on the heartstrings. Ultimately its Ray's decision,
-
E, so glad to "see" you. I couldn't speak either yesterday, but I did a lot of crying and cussing. I hope Obama gets something in place to prevent things like this from happening. Look at other countries and follow suit for crying out loud.
-
Wow !!! How adorable and what a hard choice. My immediate response was #2 though. Don't have a REAL reason except #2 just looked like he had a bit more character.
Jackie

Before I go to bed, I'll post the folllowing. Makes perfect sense to me.

-
Good to see you too, Blue, and all of my friends here. You're all very precious to me.
-
The one on the bottom has "poysonality" in spades, and a sense of humor.
-
Blue .. the black and white one is my favorite. I love the name Winston.
How old is the puppy now? When can you bring him home?
love ya,
Bren
-
I thought you would Bren. WE could have one as early as Wednesday. Ray likes the name Lincoln too, so its still up in the air. I'd like to wait until I see the personality to name him. Virgil was so anal that he warranted a geeky name so Virgil suited him to a T.
-
Darn, my computer decided to take a break while the photos were downloading and so I can only see the top 1/16 of each pic!
-
The bottom one for sure - he's adorable and he's looking right into the camera - and he's interesting!
-
Ok - the fossil is sweet - how about naming him Fossil? :-)
Have you seen them walk and behave - that's how I have chosen dogs in the past.
-
The gray puppy struck my fancy too. But the truth of who is meant to come home with you will come when you meet them in person.
The constant string of shootings is heartbreaking.
It's not one problem. It's always a mix of problems coming together in the most awful way. But it is foolish to deny that the easy access to guns is a big contributor to the ever increasing death toll. Young men used to have lots of fistfights in my day ... and then get over whatever it was that set them off. Now they have a gun in their pocket and shoot. You can't take back dead. This country is awash in guns and we will never be able to put that genie back in the bottle. Nobody is suggesting banning all guns. I have no problem with guns for self protection or sport. We have guns in the house too. But the NRA needs to quit rabble rousing on the issue of assault weapons that have no purpose other than killing large numbers of people quickly. Those weapons put all the power in the hands of the bad guy. They needed to be banned long ago. -
I haven't but Ray has. We were supposed to go today, but I'm having a bad day so will see how I feel later. This humid cold weather is killing me and it's an hour drive.
-
WR, I totally agree.
-
Is Lilah going along on the meet and greet?
-
For sure. She needs to agree as well. It's been a month and she's still looking for daVirg.
-
Athena, hahahahahahha Fossil sounds good!
-
Blue, for some reason, the top picture, the bottom half is grayed out. I can only see his ears and white-striped forhead. I can hardly judge, but my heart sinks thinking you will leave one behind (though I guess the remaining one has a nice situation). I like the bottom one though...those ears give him character. I suppose to young to discern personality? That would be my final deciding factor.
Athena - during chemo, I totaly forgot about my second car registration bill (it was piled with the rest of them). Months later, I was getting to the pile and it was an oh crap moment. I went to the DMV and mentioned I was late due to cancer and they waived the late fees! I was shocked, since California is so in debt. Knowing the feds (as I do), they might not be so forgiving, but you might try, to atleast, get rid of any interest or make a payment plan and mention your illness. It is worth a try.
p.s. Fossil - cute cute name
