Susan and Auntie, both your meals sound good.
Lunch yesterday was mediocre Chinese at a nice restaurant. Or the building and gardens are nice, anyway. The hot tea was delicious. The meal came piled onto a luncheon plate and wasn't hot. A LOT of fried rice. I ate about 1/4 of it.
Dinner last night was the last of the beef veggie noodle soup, very tired at this point! Glad to see it go. Also triscuits spread with butter and home-made iced tea.
Dinner tonight will be chicken sausage gumbo ladled over brown rice and a salad.
A promised front came through and it's actually cold enough to wear jeans today! Yay!

Carrie, I'm going to make the popcorn too. It sounded good and looks festive.
Carole, the gumbo sounds wonderful. I'm going to have to make some soon too.
I think dinner tonight will be grilled hamburgers and a few (very few) oven fried potatoes.
The sun is finally shining today, yay! It's been damp and gloomy the past four days. Enough already.
Tomorrow we are going to the city (St. Louis) to do some shopping and spend the night at a new casino. Maybe 12-12-12 will end up being lucky.
Is tomorrow the end of the world or is it the 21st? I forget. -

I totally broke out into laughs...for a variety of reasons!
Today is little DGS's second birthday.....the little guy who has the hairstylist (she was the person in the pic Michelle posted for me). It feels like he should be turning four with all the activity and learning he's packed into that time. His family is moving to their new home today...I guess so they will remember the date?
Last night we had baked salmon topped with sliced garlic, salad, brussels sprouts, and a side of leftover wheat pasta with broccoli rabe, butternut squash and walnuts.
Susan, are/ were you a trained chef? Your food is so authentic.....
Does anyone watch Treme? I love the chef sequences in that series. -

As it turns out, it doesn't matter which day it ends, I'll be in a casino both days with some of my most favorite friends and family. Not a bad way to go I guess lol! -

Our DS2 turned us on to Treme and we are so hooked....almost totally caught up which presents the problem of having to wait a week to see a new episode. I do not even know how far they are into season three which we just started.
Just cleared out a few cabinet shelves to see what I have for cookie baking. OMG! The age of some of the items is embarrassing...I think they are as old as the "new" kitchen cabinets. So it is good that I am now home and can pay better attention to using/moving my inventory! Very good news that there was not an "unwanted item" in any of the areas....and with such tasty items ....I had been a bit afraid to tackle that cabinet...but all is well. Off to the store to get some fresh cookie baking ingredients. -
LOL Nancy, sounds perfect to me!!! I must admit I miss being 20 minutes from a casino. My bank account, however, is very relieved

Lacey, season 3 ended 2 weeks ago. The good news is, it was renewed next year for one final season at the last minute. Rumor was that it was going to be canceled.

I have the day off tomorrow, I asked for it. I will see my financial planner and get my hair done. I want 6 months off from work in a year. I hope he can help me. I want to live in Cuenca, Ecuador. Will my job allow it? manybe.. a big maybe. Do I speak Spanish?? No. But that's why I want to go. We'll see gotta dream..
Oh, for dinner, more fish, peas and boxed mashed potatoes. Sorry, bought them when I had oral surgery and have to use them up now or never.

Thanks Bedo...I laugh everytime I see that pic cause she made the three of us wait on the curb while she picked out the perfect horse and then we had to wait till he finished eating before we could go. Tells me she is going to go back and visit him once in awhile. i guess she misses some things from home here in the country. Way to go putting your dreams into reality!
Auntienance Kinda sounds like the end of the world is a sale that you dont want to miss..lol. Hope its not tomorrow...I have too much to do!
Tonight will be open faced hot meatball subs.. they had a 2fer on pre-cooked meatballs at the store.

Strangely, at least to me, Jacques Pepin LOVES boxed potatoes and uses them freely to thicken soups. For that reason, I always have some on the shelf. They are also a perfect ingredient for making potato bread. You could also use the dried potatoes as a breading for the fish. I love fish wrapped in thin slices of potato, so why wouldn't this work?
Tonight a few chops from Lamb No 2 will find their way to the grill. The potato Dauphinois is in the oven. Will also serve a salad with a light vinagrette and goat cheese. The goat cheese is in the freezer, I will dip into the leftover egg wash and then some herbs and breadcrumbs to lightly fry before placing on the salad. Fell in love with this in France. Never make it since I hate to waste a whole egg, but I baked the rest of the brioche dough today so I have leftover egg!

Had a Rachel Ray recipe, "Ricky Chicky", which was basically a stir fry with chicken, scallions, peas (I subbed carrots, julienned) in a honey, lime, bitters sauce. It was quite tasty, and I enjoyed straying from the usual soy sauces with stir fry. Instead of rice we had quinoa, and a salad of arugula with balsamic dressing.
Lord! I just heard on MSNBC of a mass shooting in a mall in Portland Oregon. That topped the guy who shot a man in the back of his head today in Columbus Circle, NYC. It is so disturbing to turn on the news and hear about pedophiles, testosterone-laden murderers, parents abusing their babies, etc., etc. I was glad to see a piece on swimming babies, and a generous eight year old tonight....give me the soft stuff, P-L-E-A-S-E ! -
Before I retired, I rarely watched the news. It was too much like work. I was a prison warden.

I just got home, a few minutes ago....and a bit earlier than usual. I had to leave early to get my mom to the dentist for a checkup. The dentist was running later due to having to squeeze in an emergency patient. Otherwise, I'd have been home really early.
Tonight was cheese burgers.
Over the weekend, I looked in the chicken cookbook and decided to try a combination of things. I added some cornstarch to soy sauce and then marinated cubed chicken breasts in it. I cooked the chicken in a skillet. In my dutch oven, I cooked a mixture of peas, several leeks cut into strips a couple of inches long, a couple of small gloves of minced garlic, some asparagus sprouts, a small grated hot pepper and chunks of already cooked ham until the vegetables were cooked, but still slightly crisp...
Some brown rice cooked in chicken stock rounded it out. Basically, a bed of rice, and then a mixture of chicken and the vegetables. For something so simple, it was pretty good. For whatever reason, I wasn't feeling adventerous with the spices that night.
My dad was sort of a horse whisperer...except his was with race horses. He didn't go often, but when he did, he had some substantial additions to the retirement fund.
Lacey, DD helped clean out the cabinets last year around this time. She took pictures, (and showed them to her friends) of the dry and canned goods with "best by" dates before she was born (1998). The pantry was kind of empty when she got done. :-)
Bedo...this was in the mid 70s...so it's close..... After a small earthquake, some idiot put straw, some old "found on the road, dead" blown tires, sulfur, used motor oil and a lit road flare into an extinct volcano.... In the morning, when the evil smelling black plume was noticed, the National Guard was called out and the town was evacuated. The authorities were a bit peeved when it was discoverd the volcano was still extint. Despite their promises, the culprit was never caught.
Kara, some years I'm a scrooge too, although I try hard to not show it. Mostly I think it's my desire to relax a bit colliding with the 'Go, Go, Go' mentality. I say this, because my "scrooginess" is related to how busy I've been the past year...

So sad about the shooting they had in Portland at the mall. DH and I go shopping there everytime we go to Porltand and was just there about a week and a half ago. I just don't understand how people can do things like this. So sad.

Debbie - the mall shooting made the national news, so we heard about it. Why, why, why??? Such a tragedy!

It's 1:20...where is the cleaning service that was supposed to show up at 1:00? If they don't come, I'm going to cry!!!

Michelle- It is such a tragedy and just found out this morning my nephew was working in a coffee kiosk less than 40 feet away and took cover my brother called and told me he is very shaken up and deceided to move back home. Just glad he is safe.
Wonderful that you got a good onco that you trust and like who has put a good plan in place for you. I hope and pray for the carplatin to kick ass and put you in remission. Did your cleaning people show up yet? They better or else they are going to have to answer to a group of angy women/and eric here from the dinner thread.

Oh Debbie such a close call with your nephew....so scary! Glad everyone is ok. When the governors close all the mental institutions, people dont get the help and services that they need. It happened here in NY and we all lost our jobs and the people ended up out on the streets with one women killing a police officer.
Michelle I think the carboplatin is one of the milder (less side effects) drugs, so I hope it is very gentle on you but kicks the cancers butt at the same time. Love your blog with all the pics...that balloon ride looks like a blast.
Supposed to go for pizza for hump night but decided to stay in, lots going on this weekend and I am trying to kick this cold.
So tonights dinner is.....anything found in the fridge that does not have green things growing on top.

Debbie - that is scary that your nephew was working in the mall. I would have been terrified to encounter that situation! And yes, my cleaning people showed up and did an awesome job. Not sure I like their "highly perfumed" products - may have to discuss it with them. Hubby thinks it's fine but we went out for dinner tonight and I could still smell it when we walked in. I think I have a hyper-sensitive sniffer these days...lol! Three women, two hours, mission accomplished. Now I won't have to hang my head in shame when JoyceK and her DH come tomorrow night for supper. They are bringing pizza

The second casserole of chicken enchilladas and a pitiful amount of leftover beans for dinner tonight. Tomorrow is once again, treatment day [has it really been 28 days?] so no more cooking until Friday.

Michelle~enjoy your dinner with joyce and her DH, I wish I could afford a cleaning company like Merri Maids. Oh well, now that the family has been painted I did a lot of cleaning while most of the furniture was put in the other room. It gets really dusty behind the furniture that is against the wall.

Michelle- I agree don't like the strong smells that cleaning people use. I have severe asthma so can't handle that. I do wear a light perfume (Light blue) that I love but can't tolerate strong perfumes. I would def let them know next time it bothers you.
Carrie- They closed Mental institutions? Wow that is just not right. They should be held accountable when some one dies because of there bad judgements. Have fun humping! lol!

Most mental institutions were closed about 20 years ago. They were warehouses that we just awful. The plan was to open group homes and re-home. But as often happens, the first part happened, and the second part didn't. That is why the number of homeless people grew so much back then.

I feel terrible for your nephew, Debbie. Young people starting out their adult lives should have the peace of mind that their workday is not going to be marred by random lethal shootings. I agree, Carrie, that the paltry effort to fund/provide needed mental health services in this country is a disgrace....and few families and individuals avoid being impacted by those decisions.
Had dinner at a mediocre Italian restaurant with my former work colleagues for their holiday party...chicken marsala, shells, steak tips and rice pilaf...all pretty tasteless, and the server must have also thought so since he ran around scooping plates as fast as his kegs could carry him! It was great to see my co-workers tho.....and brought them my Italian pizzelle cookies and a lemon cranberry bread to enjoy at school tomorrow. I spent spent today baking....and have a few more of those days coming up.

I did enjoy the time with my daughter. I will post pics, we got a ofamily pic in. It was sad, but she was after all 90, and not totally unexpected. And, since this is real life, my daughter got engaged the next day at the Packers game. It was supposed to be on her birthday, but that was the funeral day. Life goes on.... Much love. -

Susan- Wow. come to think of it I havn't seen or heard of any place that is a home for the mentaly ill. I know that in Hawaii they have a lot of mentally ill or homeless because they were flown there from the Mainland because the weather is nice there and didn't know what else to do with them. so sad! Hope things go well tomorrow for you!
Lacey- Sorry your dinner was not that great but glad you got to see your co-workers.
