Love the cartoon, Rosemary!
Count me as officially jealous, too, about the recent meet-ups! So glad when girlfriends get to spend time together, and the fact that such strong bonds are made from cyberspace is amazing!
Glenna, I've never been to Chincoteague, but it's been on my list ever since reading Marguerite Henry's books as a horse-crazy pre-teen. My family may be having a gathering this year on the Outer Banks. We may have to pass over Oakracoke (sp?) in favor of Chincoteague!
Warm, dry, and windy here in the Rockies. I don't think I've ever waited this late to put on my snow tires. I feel like I'm asking for trouble...
-
The drought has eased a bit. We were in an exceptional drought this summer. It eased to extreme drought, and now we are only in severe drought. The PBS series on the Dust Bowl has been hard to watch. 10 years of drought is a terrifying thought.
-
I'm agreeable to a gathering on Chincoteague or at my house in Vermont. We can sleep 9 if we sleep double, use the cot and the couch, more if I set up air mattresses. But I've also always wanted to see Chincoteague - also was horse crazy when young. Still really like horses, would love to get back to riding and someday have one of my own.
Didn't go back to the hospital again last night, but the nurse said that Millie was doing better. We're going in a bit with another milkshake. Again, thanks to everybody for good wishes.

Morning All,
Was a cold 34 degrees when I got up this morning. brrrr. Going to walk the dogs and work on the leaves soon.
Glenna ... It sounds like a heavenly place. I've always wanted to visit there.
Alexandria ... Keeping your MIL in my thoughts. Your DH too .. he sounds pretty stressed right now.
Blue, Sandy, Enjoyful and Linda ... so glad you had a wonderful time with each other.
Chaplain .. That's so great that you got to meet Linda's family!
I applied for another HR position. I hope something pans out. I've been out of the business for many years, so it might be tough getting hired.
hugs,
Bren

AnneW - don't you know you are suppose to wait for the first blizzard to put on your snow tires!! Our snow level looks to be 8000' or even higher. My ideal is no lower than 4000'! Taken last night from backyard (with very slow Iphone):

Lindasa - Bravo TV now runs a series based on the guys who operate Cheezburger.com
I watched one just to check it out. They're a bunch of 30 somethings with offbeat humor. The owner loves cats.....more than just about anything.
Maybe we could all win the Casting for Recovery lottery and come to my little town. They use it as one of their destinations. http://castingforrecovery.org/wordpress/home/

I'm not sure if this is a qualified post, but if not....
Former Komen exec. who pushed to defund Planned Parenthood weighing Senate bid
Karen Handel, the former Susan G. Komen for the Cure executive who spearheaded the group’s effort to cut all funding to Planned Parenthood, is weighing whether or not to run for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, according to the Weekly Standard.
A former aide to Handel who worked on her failed 2010 gubernatorial bid told the magazine that she was considering challenging Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) to a primary contest in 2014. Kay Godwin, a co-chair of Georgia Conservatives in Action, said she was hearing similar noise about a possible primary challenge, according to the Standard.
Handel fell 2,500 votes shy of winning the Republican gubernatorial primary in 2010, losing a runoff to then-Rep. Nathan Deal, who went on to win the general election. That primary drew wide national attention from party heavyweights, with prominent names like Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee backing Deal, and Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney endorsing Handel.

Heavy day today with moving lots of things around -- heavy dressers, and a couple desks. Never know when the change it around bug is going to rear its head, but daughter is coming the first week of December so I need to "make a difference" in the place. I will have plenty of time for regrets tomorrow. My back is already talking a bit......some good stretching is in order before bed and when I get up in the morning.
Otherwise a gorgeous Sunday. Had the dogs all out jumping in some of the leaf piles --- they are like little kids burrowing under the leaves and hiding from each other. Makes for something to look forward to amid all the work our 70 or so trees cause. Love the shade in summer.

Going in late to work today, as hubby has to take me (our car broke down, so we've only one vehicle at the moment). Unfortunately, he had athsma so bad last night that he got very little sleep. So I'm letting him sleep, and he'll take me to the last morning train (a little after 0800 PST). In the meantime I'm catching up here and doing a couple loads of laundry.
Jackie - hope your back is OK. Mine doesn't like it AT ALL when I start moving around heavy stuff. Take an anti-inflammatory and rest if it's mad at you. A nice sit in a hot tub feels good, too.....

I am game for whatever the majority votes for. But we should have a thread meeting, no?
-
Enjoyful on her way home - left at 9 this morning (a day late but I loved the extra time with her) - had such a good weekend even though we didn't get to see Lassie (hope you're resting and healing) - going to get my tree from storage today (my friend's basement) - won't get decorated right away but at least I can take my time doing it.
Another reunion is a great idea but it needs to be near a major city where there are buses, trains, planes because lots of us don't drive and airfares can be prohibitive as well - we need options IMHO.
-
Sandy .. glad you had a great time with Enjoyful. If everyone wants to meet up in Niagara on the Lake again next summer, I'm game for that. We had a great time last summer when we got together up there. Those of us down here, flew into Buffalo and then drove across the border. Rosemary and Linda drove to Niagara from the Detroit area.
For me ... I just need plenty of notice so I can save for the trip ... wherever it may be.
Hope all have a great day.
hugs,
Bren

I vote for easily accessible for someone coming from Seattle.

And I'm with Bren on the advance notice in order to have time to save up for trip.

Gives a whole new meaning to "Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps".
Empty, yellow, hollow eyes
no glimmer of hope, no shimmer of pride
what once was human has slowly diedtattered and torn,
weathered and worn,
leered at and jeered and generally scornedseeking comfort, warmth, shelter and food
but some people when asked are frightfully rude
the same tired response, get a job dudebut how they ask, with no address, no phone
I don't have a place that I can call home
its easy to say from so high up on your throne
but I'm begging you please give this poor dog a boneI was once like you, worked hard for the man
but the plant was shut down, was one of the first to get canned
told that the ceos had spent our pension plan
I was out of work with no leg on which to standI scrimped and I scraped,
the ends I tried to make,
but debt was something I could not escapethe collectors kept knocking,
what little I had left, I was soon hawking
soon all I had was this one holy stockingso how can you look at me like I was so wrong
or what if all this was caused by a bomb?
because I had stayed in Iraq for too longor what if I was beaten by my boyfriend, so strong and so proud
because I had played my music too loud
for so long I had done what only he would allow
I may be broke and homeless, but I'm away from him nowwhat if it was a fire or an investment gone bad?
must I still pay for the luck that I had?
a few kind words, a nod or a smile
could actually bring my hope up a whileso if you don't have some change, you can still make some
you'd be surprised at what you can gain from
helping a fellow man; it can be superior
from getting your kicks by making someone feel inferiorso its up to you when you walk down a street
how to interact with the people you meet
whether you decide to be rude or be sweet
always remember what you sow you shall reap -
Bren:
I like the idea of Niagara on the Lake but it is difficult to get to - Niagara Falls is a better idea because that is where all the hotels are (and the casinos if anyone is interested) - we could stay at the Falls and perhaps take a bus of some sort to NOTL and I agree we should plan now for a summer get together because saving for it is something I have to do as well.
-
Blue, I love the poem, It speaks volumes and volumes. I think there is a quote that says something to the effect of being kind to everyone you meet as everyone has something they are dealing with though they may never say it, or outwardly act defeated and beat down.....it is there. Kindness costs nothing and enlarges the heart and soul of the person being kind.
Feeling fine for all I did yesterday, but I'm going to take it easy for the rest of the week. I have dh do a bit more of this sort of thing, but he is 6 yrs. older than me, so that is not so great either. I think we coming to the time when we are going to have to look for the odd person/youngster who'd like to make a bit of pocket change for a couple hours. Grateful to be feeling ok.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.

I would selfishly vote for Las Vegas, only because airfares are so cheap getting there, though I don't really fly (so I could drive if I wanted to) nor do I like that place, but lol, it's my way of saying, there would be very few places I could get to within my parameters! Niagra sounds wonderful and interesting, though.
-
I agree that something accessible by various forms of transport would be great. For example, if folks are concerned about parking in a city there are options to park in the suburbs and take a train.
Man, I so wish my den could accommodate us all! I would LOVE to host.
I would offer my sister's humungous house in Potomac (the 'burbs) but it is NOT transportation friendly. Or my mother's humungous apartment.....but it is abroad. :-)
Lunch at the Lincoln Memorial?
Or at the Rockefeller Plaza?
Or the Baltimore Zoo (which is better than the DC one)?
Or at Faneuil Hall - haven't been to Boston in ages, and we can get more Canadian sisters involved, perhaps....
-
Boston! YEAH!
-
My house in VT. is about an hour from Burlington, VT - and there is an airport there. I'm game for anything, though, that the thread wants to do.
Blue. love the poem.
-
Kam, is that Mt. Shasta? I've always wanted to go there. Never made it up that far north when I lived on the Central Coast!
-
Niagara Falls sounds great to me!
-
Lassie, ouch! I hope your shoulder heals quickly.
Due to another health condition it's difficult for me to travel so I'll just sit back and listen to the negotiations.
I just read something that I hope will draw our Otter in:
November 26, 2012More than 15,000 otters in Illinois are pilfering fish from fishermen and disrupting the local ecosystem. To deal with it, the state is allowing an otter trapping season for the first time in 87 years, starting this month. Bob Bluett, a biologist from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, joins Steve Inskeep to talk about the otter inundation.
-
Chincoteague is NOT near any major airports. Baltimore is closest and about 2 1/2 hours from chincoteague.
-
Just popping in to say Enjoyful just called to let me know she has crossed the border and is enroute back home. She isn't starting rads today -- and yes, she did call them and tell them. She will start tomorrow and let us know.
Happy to go anywhere people decide ... I will be retired so it will be easier to manage logistics.
L -
It would be good if we could spare people the expense of having to rent a car - so something that is near an airport and accessible by public transportation.
