    Carol- My pork stuffing is just like the French Gorton, just not cooked as long.  I cook about 4 pounds or so and do about 2 diced onions and about 3 tsp of ground clove.  Put it all in a big pot and fill with water and boil it low forever, lol!  When the water is very low, almost gone I take it off let it cool and mix with a mixer and set aside to stuff the next day.  We all look forward to it.

    Your post gave me goose bumps and smiles all at the same time!  That is crazy about those lumps, and PTL that they quickly disappeared.  Besides devine intervention, what did the Onc say it was?  Where were they?  So happy for you!

    What's for dinner?

    We have prepared for organic shredded chicken tacos.

    I put 2 organic chicken breasts in the crock pot, topped with 3 cloves of garlic, 3/4 diced red bell pepper, cayenne and black pepper for spices and then poured a little Trader's Joe's chunky organic salsa on top.  Add a bit of water and let simmer in crock pot.  Then after 4 hours, will shred the chicken while it is still in the pot (just take fork and pry apart into shredded slices) and the chicken absorbs all the extra crock pot juices at that time, making for juicy chicken.

    We have organic corn taco shells, spinach in place of lettuce, light fat free organic sour cream, diced fresh jalapenos and more salsa to top it.  Served with organic black beans. I will also steam a bunch of veggies on the stove for a few minutes.  Those will be cauliflower, broccoli and zucchini.

    Yummy - and we will have leftovers for Monday night.  Monday it is hard to make a whole new meal and get in front of the TV in time to watch our favorite shows.  :)

    Debra, No one knows where the lumps went. They were on bottem of left breast.  malignant one wes on upper part of right one.  Surgeon found no trace of them at routine check in January.  First thing neurologist asked after next routine mamo was if I'd seen my surgeon and what he found.  When I said no trace he that's good.  Told me Dr M has an almost supernatural sence of touch, that my surgeon's fingers are so sensitive that he can detect and determine the size and shape of lumps so small that they can't be detected by any test available. Probably an exageration but still nice to hear!

    I'm having 8 ppl over. Bought a 15lb turkey. Not doing any baking, my aunt will bring Pumpkin Pie and Butternut Squash from their garden, I ordered an Apple Pie from an apple farm down the street. Lupien Farms.  I will make my usual 3 different types of cranberry dishes, I'll do lemon glazed sweet potatoes and Tarragon Green Beans.  My sister will bring the mashed potatoes and mixed nuts. We always make too much but everyone goes home with something.

    Laurie - I add mashed potatoes to my gorton stuffing.  And my seasoning is slightly different - I use a teaspoon of cinnamon and a half teaspoon of cloves along with a tablespoon of salt. Regional differences!

    That is so encouraging, it's so nice to see good results on a scare!  I could picture you being a basket case. That's how I was all last Christmas.  Standing in line somewhere all I could think of was this lump in my breast.  BTW, our favorite server at our favorite restaurant thought he might have prostate cancer.  He said he was a basket case because his mom left him a message on his cell phone that said "it's not good, call me", and he couldn't take a break to call her.  He is an awesome guy, and just turned 21.  As it turns out, they will keep an eye on the spot, as they do feel it is pre-cancerous, and his grandfather had prostate cancer.  He has been given a strict diet by his doctor and will do a recheck in 6 months.  I'm praying like crazy for him too.

    Ok you New Englanders, I thought gorton was more of a pate or spread. How does one make it into a stuffing? Inquiring minds want to know.

    I have never heard of Gorton, and I am true blue New Englander! I do know about Gorton the Gloucester Fisherman though. King of the fish sticks.

    Dinner tonight -- Lentil soup became lentil stew with homemade pasta. The pasta drank ALL of the liquid. Absolutely delicious. I used some aging French black lentils that keep their shape. There is enough for both of us to have a small bowl for lunch tomorrow.

    Hi everyone.



    I've been really busy the past week. Right now I'm a government employee with the US Department of Health & Human Services. Normally I work for Verizon. Basically, when I get called up, it's like a military reserve or National Guard position. My regular employer *has* to let me go and give me my regular job back when I get home. Verizon goes beyond the the minimum requirements and makes up the difference between the two salaries.



    The medical team and equipment is essentially a self contained portable hospital emergency department. I and usually one other person set up and maintain the computer networking and radio communications systems..these are used for medical records and to make sure everyone can talk to each other. Because our workload was expected to be big enough, we had two extra people in this job and a bunch of other medical people.



    As the needs change, we adapt the computer system and radio systems to meet the new needs.



    Food wise, it's been a mixture of MREs (military meals) and junk food. Tonight we were able to get food delivered from a restaurant. This was good. This thanksgiving, we're hoping to get food brought in.



    There is now laundry service. We drop it off in a mesh bag and it's washed and dried in a HUGE machine with 50 other mesh bags. 12 hours later we pick it up. We also get showers...it's kind of humorous... when we're showering, an armed federal marshal stands outside the door.....just in case..

    Nothing has happened....

    I have also not heard of gorton stuffing, but then, I've only lived in NE for 47 years!

    I make a sausage stuffing whch is very different than the one that Kelly Ripa's mother-in-law made on TV last week. I didn't see Gelman's, but I think they are all on the "Kelly and Michael" website.



    Speaking of TV show ideas, I used one from The Chew for my centerpiece last evening. I floated a candle among fresh cranberries in a low v-shaped vase......very pretty!

    I googled Gorton Pork dressing and came up with a French Canadian recipe for pork pate.  Could we have a little more explanation, just for the sake of regional education?  I had never heard of Gorton.  Joyce, is your pork dressing also "Gorton"?

    Eric- You sure have a lot going on there but it's so awesome you are helping out!

    I got a new iphone4 today DH got the 5. I have been using a verizon Lg for the last couple of years and even though I couldn't d/l apps or didn't have a good camera on it i loved it, it was user friendly. I can not figure this thing out I will keep messing with it until I decide to ask DH for help. So far not sure I even need it but on the good side I will be able to d/l pictures finally once I figure it out.

    We are suppose to have about 90mph winds tonight and tomorrow been really windy and rainy we went to safeway to go shopping tonight and there was a news crew outside and asked me and DH if we wouldn't mind being interviewed so we walked over there and they asked us what we thought of the weather, said we didn't like it windy it was pretty scarey also said we would rather be in Hawaii! I was kind of embarrassed being on tv I looked like a drowned rat lol! Watching the 10 oclock news now and havn't seen it yet maybe they will decide not to air us. LOL!

    OK, here's the story on Gorton, Gorton Stuffing, French Canadian stuffing, etc.  The seasonings vary a little by family but it's essentially the same.  I take 5 pounds of ground pork butt (yes, it seems to matter that it's pork butt rather than any old ground pork.)  I usually ask my butcher to grind it for me so I know I'm getting pork butt.  I add my onions, salt, cinnamon and cloves and cook it on low heat for about 3 or 4 hours, until it's almost smooth.  You want it to really break down into fine granules of meat.  If I am making a tortiere (meat pie) I take out about a quart, then mix it with 3 or 4 potatoes mashed up, pour it in a pie crust and bake it.  The rest of the meat can be cooked a little longer, then beat it a few minutes to make it really smooth, pour into small containers and chill.  It freezes well, so it's nice to have on toast during those chilly winter mornings.  For stuffing, I take the meat that has been cooked for about 3 hours and mix it with potatoes that have been mashed.  Stuff it in the bird - it is already well-cooked and it will smell amazing while the turkey is roasting. 

    Joyce and Laurie may weigh in on their family's recipe differences.  We eat the tortieres for breakfast on Thanksgiving and Christmas so that allows for other stuffing recipes to take a place on the table without sacrificing room.  It's a pretty "heavy" pie so we find it better to have it separately.   You can buy tortieres around here in the French Canadian markets, especially in Mancester and Nashua..

    Another way to eat pork!!! And for breakfast! I put on three pounds just reading about this dish. I suspect that I would love this dish. I seem to love all those calorie dense foods. Even though I lived in Manchester, I was working so many hours a week I don't think I went to a bakery even once. Clearly, an error in judgement.

    Mine is very similar to yours Michelle.

    I was proud of myself that despite not feeling great I went to the grocery store to do my Thanksgiving shopping.  I say WAS because as I unpacked my food I realized I forgot to buy pork!!!!  Yell

    Love my DH :)  I told him I forgot the pork and being the sweetheart he is, he offered to stop on his way home and pick it up for me.

    Making spaghetti with meatballs and will be thinking of you Michelle as I make your sauce.

    Oh my goodness...I laughed so hard reading Susan's post about Gorton the Fisherman.  He is the only one i know too!

    Ohio was amazing...so proud of my son, 23 yrs old and built a new home, soo beautiful and now all moved in with a little help from his mom and dad:) He is a design engineer, just graduating from Akron U.  We ate out a lot and he took us to some fun places in Cleveland. One restaurant had the leg lamp from the movie "the Christmas Story"  I guess it was filmed in a suburb of Cleveland. I had a monte cristo sandwich witha a raspberry-cranberry dipping sauce...to die for. My Dh complained at every place we went to about his meal  arrgh...so frustrating. Also got my fix and got to see a soccer game,   So far Akron is #1 in the country!

    Tonight is spaghetti for us too, quick and easy, as I have to unpack and get settled in.  Daughter comes home on Wed!

    Debbie  Stay safe in the winds and congrats on your movie star status!  When you make the pages of "the people in Wal-Mart"  then you have to worry. LOL

    Tonights dinner is western omelettes (with bacon instead of ham), fried potatoes with peppers and onions and sourdough toast. Call it lack of motivation.

    Michelle- That sounds so amazing I had never heard of this dish before I wont do it this TG but want to try it out some time soon.

    Laurie- What a sweet DH for going to get the pork for you hope your feeling better today too. Spaghetti  with Michelles  sauce sounds good right now!

    Carrie- Haha oh boy I know what you mean on the wal-mart pictures I hope I never make those ones. And I doubt I would make movie star status after watching us on tv DH said something like, Glad i have my cane so the wind doesn't knock me over and I was trying to say we will be getting lots of water and non perishables but stuttered on the word perishables Chuck and I kidded each other after watching it it was quite funny to us not to mention embarrasing. LOL!  Your trip to Ohio sounds like you had a great time with DS and getting him all settled, what a great mommy you are. Your DH is probably used to your good cooking and no one does it better!! ;-))

    We just got our power back on, weather was clocked at 98mph here there is flooding and trees/lines down nothing like what everyone went through with Sandy but still a mess here, quieted down for now suppose to be getting hit again with it.

    Not sure whats for dinner the plan was sandwiches since power was out but now i have to think of something.

    We had a lovely dinner of butternut squash soup with pepitas, a salad with dijon vinaigrette, and a fabulous quiche with gruyere and smoked ham.  Thanks so much, Susan - it was all just delicious.   My DH ate more than his fair share Wink And I'm thinking tomorrow's breakfast will rock!

    Laurie - I bet your DH wanted to make sure you had the pork for the stuffing.He was a good man for picking up the meat.

    Michelle, thanks for the explanation of Gorton.  As Susan commented, it does sound calorie dense.  I'm waiting to hear from Joyce on her version.  It seems more like pate than dressing.

    Debbie, I hope the winds aren't too fierce.  I love that Oregon coast.  It is magnificent.

    Laurie, I hope you are feeling much better by Thanksgiving.

    Home-made pizza tonight!  I have the crust mixed and in the refrigerator.  The recipe makes two crusts so I think I'll freeze the extra one.  Toppings will be Italian sausage and sauteed fresh mushrooms, fresh tomatoes, calamata olives and mozzarella cheese. 

    Cooked all the various greens in the refrigerator today.  Lemon-flavored olive oil, fresh garlic and pepper flakes in a skillet.  Then wilted down the greens and grated some nugmeg, added s & p.  The greens tasted bitter so I added some red pepper jelly for sweetness.  It was an improvement.  A side dish for tomorrow night's dinner, whatever that is! 

    Weighed in at WW meeting today.  Down another 1.8 lbs.  Supposed to be maintaining but I'm still in weight loss mode.  This moment I'm wearing a pair of jeans I couldn't squeeze into 6 weeks ago.  It feels good!  But some more lbs to go.

    Michelle, I am glad that you enjoyed the quiche. It sure was rich and fluffy this time! Loved spending some time with you, though I worry that I stayed too long. She wasn't lying.... such a beautiful view from her chair.

    Strangely enough, we too had quiche and a salad for dinner. I had made so much soup that I froze 3 quarts to serve as a first course at the Thanksgiving meal. I had to choose between making more soup or enjoying some tonight. I went the lazy person's route. Now I have to figure out what dishes to add to the mix for the soup.

    Laurie, you have been sick for an awfully long time. I can't imagine you are ready to feel like yourself again.

    Car, what a treat to have meals prepared in so many restaurants. Your pride in your son, and annoyance with Mr. Car is loud and clear!  :-)

    Carberry, my mom is also a Zip....class of 1940...organic chemistry.



    Dinner tonight was a Beef Stew MRE. I have to be careful of those things. This one was 2900 calories in one meal.

    OK folks - I have been up to D.C. for the last set of vaccine injections and have missed a LOT!!!  I have been reading for pages and pages, so here goes:

    deb - sorry to hear about your vertigo - my boss had a fall a few months ago and seems to have some spontaneous episodes of vertigo - I know it can be really scary - and OMG I think you actually are Little Debbie!

    turkey day side dish - I make twice baked sweet potatoes every year.  Same process as a regular potato, but I add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves to the butter and cream and mashed sweet potato, then re-stuff into the jackets and top with pecans and maple syrup, then bake to heat up.

    We just got back from the Glenview Pub with Rebekah and Nick, I had a Rueben sandwich with sweet potato fries.  Saved the other half of the sandwich and some fries for lunch tomorrow at work.

    Nick leaves in the morning to go back to Bermuda but Bex is staying until the 27th.  Thanksgiving morning she and my niece are going to run in the 5K Turkey Trot in Ayer MA.  The proceeds go to cancer research.
