cp418...big thanks for that. I felt pretty certain what I heard this afternoon was "different" from the tweet. If I were a bit more computer literate I could have looked it up before I jumped on here, but it just made me angry.
Like Kam says -- he was not officially endorsing Pres. Obama with his remarks but making statements germane to the situation that was at hand. Obviously, since there are a huge pile of miss-steps, lies, exaggerations, withheld information and other problems associated with a candidate that 'came with maybe just a bit too much baggage' right from the start perhaps the perception was bad, but you are right Kam.....when Romney loses, the mildest innuendo is going to take on gigantic proportions. I as well add my second to your questions. Mitt the Magician, how did you do it???

Joe Biden is on Hardball now -- very interesting. Joe is always interesting, anyway!
And Nate Silver's 538 was even better today. The wrench in the works, of course, may be voter suppression. Upwards of 6 hours people stood in line to vote in Florida today ... Ohio lines are long and the criminal Secretary of State Husted is doing his level best to disenfranchise minorities and rig the voting machines. I can only hope the FBI is closing in on him soon. He needs to spend a long time in a small cell with a big bad roommate with lots of time on his hands.

Preferably one who has a relative who was harrassed trying to vote! Oh, the beauty of justice.

Hahahaha!

People say our healthcare insurance is going to go up because of Obamacare. Really? I just checked my 2013 premiums. Well they're right, they're going up 72 cents a month over 2012! Checked the benefits and now $250 for one admittance to hospital inpatient, and instead of a % for outpatient, that is now $250 too. In 2012 it was $350 and the outpatient was always more than $350 (I can attest to that given 4 surgeries last year, 2 outpatient).
This is one of the plans the Exchange will emulate. This is what happens when you have a large pool...prices are held down as negotiating power goes up!

Nate is a good weatherwane. I'm cooling the grape juice for the celebration.

Robme staff refuse to let frostbitten children leave PA rally! Can't allow those crowds to look smaller by the exit of a few tortured children and their families.

I've never seen so much consternation over Nate. Been following him since 2004, too.
They say the first sign of a defeated campaign is to complain about the polls. I guess if you are science-deficient, that becomes even easier to do.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I'll be doing colonoscopy prep on election night.

A twofer Mary, (if Romney gets elected). Wait, if we get rid of Romney election nite, maybe that's the real twofer.

This is a disturbing headline at Huffingtonpost.com

Kam...another instance of scare mongering and more than likely lies based on suppositions.Just those who don't want Pres. Obama in office, They were so between a rock and a hard place in 2008 they could not fight it. Different story now. They would like a re-write I suppose. How easy it has been, even without the House's help, to take the "goodies" that came and not complain too loudly at all. Every perception of wrong will get magnified in some way. Baby W disgusted me in every way, but I said little to anyone --- probably the worst ever was saying I felt he was harming the American people. History proves him to be one of our worst Presidents' ever. Were Romney ( though thank God he won't ) get into office I have no doubt he would share the dubious honor with Bush. I never hear these Regressive people say how wonderful they feel that they are in a country where they can freely express their views, and be and do the things they so casually condone -- like gross lies, out of context reporting, total miss-representations. Where they can be so terribly dis-respectful to the office of the President of America. They at times, seem just as out of it as Romney. Un-grateful with a strange sense of entitlement. Hope they are never right smack dab in the middle of a storm.

If it appears that Romney is winning, I may not have to take the prep medications.
Why is it, when you can't have something, it's what you want the most? I want popcorn! Big no-no for the next few days.

Mary - the radio is an underestimated but great form of coverage.
Bartender - what are the specials for tonight?
Reading more about Romney's tax returns. Am a total dufus on the topic so don't understand much.
Except that, IMO, he used the Mormon church to launder money - to "clean" it of taxability.
Romney is a welfare king.

How wonderful...in a land like we have you steal from everyone.

Oh Mary - you got me to chuckle on that one, but I don't think the momentum is currently with Robme.

I'm so proud of those Floridians who are staying in line to vote - persevering despite their Nazi governor. We'll never forget Katharine Harris...never!

Mary, It goes fast. The prep time that is. And what a relief to get through.

A spot-on column from conservative Michael Smerconish on the constant drumbeat of lies and smears against the President. He gets it, and is disgusted:

Hi, ladies . . . just catching up. It's been a crazy weekend, trying to do hurricane relief work as well as campaign volunteering. (Hello, Virginia? Anyone home? Yes, I know you're sick of getting these phone calls, but the end is in sight!) Wasn't able to do any hands-on relief work, but for a good reason: when we got to the church that's serving as a hub for donations and volunteers, there was a line of people around the block waiting to get in and get their volunteer assignments. A lot of them were runners who'd been in town for the NYC marathon. Really, really glad they canceled the race (the church in question is right on the course, and would have been cut off for most of Sunday morning if they'd run the damn thing) and that most of the runners who'd traveled long distances to be here were very gracious about the cancellation.
So, anyhow, we just dropped off a bunch of heavy-duty work gloves and will go back to volunteer during the week. (We'd heard from someone who'd been out in the Rockaways that people are stymied in cleaning up their own streets because they don't have basic equipment, like gloves and brooms . . . everything was destroyed in the flooding.)
The other really inspiring thing, besides the way runners self-organized to help, is the work of the Occupy Wall Street folks. Here's a great article on the situation in Red Hook (one of the hard-hit neighborhoods): http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2012/11/occupy-leads-relief-in-powerless-red-hook.html
The situation for people in the high-rise housing complexes is just awful. (I keep thinking, upwards of 5,000 people live in the Red Hook houses, you know at least some are women going through breast cancer treatment. Can you imagine being stuck on the tenth floor, in the dark, no elevator, no water, no heat, no phone??)

HL, thanks for the Smerconish link. I wish those that regard themselves as thoughtful conservatives would read that piece. If they gave it a fair read they might see themselves in the descriptions.
Linda, inspiring an so sad. I'm glad that Occupy exists. The talents they developed caring for a large group of people are just what's needed now. I'm sure that they need funds too. Do you have any information on how somebody could donate?
-
HL...I also very much enjoyed your link and felt it an un-biased description. It is something that every reader could find things to be in agreement with for the most part. I think one of the major issues in the "elections" and very much in this one....is the amt. of time that had to be spent defending against the lies. Mindful here that third parties had to step in because the people who worked for their companies were fearful for their jobs. This just should never be what-so-ever. If you must resort to behaviors like that, perhaps you should not be a candidate. Both sides have some of these issues, but at this point and so late....making people think they were"losing" their livelihood was a dire mistake.
Linda, it is sad what this storm wrought and I am so hoping that the coming 'storm' does not do more than be a terrible in-convenience and certainly that it does not manage to slow down efforts at getting help and care and the restoration of power and services for those in need.

R_R, here's a link to the "Occupy Sandy" fundraising page:
https://www.wepay.com/donations/occupy-sandy-cleanup-volunteers
In general, the immediate needs are being met through in-kind donations. However, there'll be a continuing need for help in rebuilding the devastated communities . . . my reading of the request for $$ is that monetary donations will be channeled into those longer-term efforts. (Still worthwhile, but wanted to be clear.)
The neighborhood organization in Red Hook that Occupy is working with is the Red Hook Initiative -- very grassroots, led by people from the community, and involved in a number of different kinds of projects that will continue after the power comes back on and the immediate clean-up is finished. Here's a link to them: http://rhicenter.org/
And here's another link that really captures the scene and spirit at St. Jacobi church yesterday:
Thank you all!!
(Edited to add . . . the preference for in-kind donations is Occupy's approach, as a small, on-the-ground, all-volunteer group responding to very immediate needs. Larger groups like the Red Cross much prefer monetary donations, which they're set up to process without the logistical hassles of sorting, packing, and delivering. Just wanted to be clear; I think both approaches are valuable, and didn't want to appear to be saying that there was no need for cash donations to meet immediate needs, because that's obviously not true.)

Another very good piece from the Atlantic about the disgraceful voter suppression tactics by Republican elected officials in Ohio and Florida, including the appalling spectacle of voters in Florida forced to wait in lines for as long as 8 hours to cast their ballots.
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2012/11/no-one-in-america-should-have-to-wait-7-hours-to-vote/264506/
You cannot explain this away as anything OTHER than voter suppression and racism. NO-ONE can justify forcing citizens to wait in line for 8 hours to vote.
Pull quote: "In America in 2012, poor people and elderly people and students should not have to wait seven hours to vote. They should not be restricted in this fashion by elected officials who justify the hardships they impart upon black voters by calling those voters "lazy." By allowing this ugliness to endure, year after year, election after election, we don't just subvert our own democracy. We preclude ourselves from turning to the world and proclaiming that we respect the value of a single vote and the dignity of a single voter. We don't practice what we preach."
L -
HL -- And now with the internet so ubiquitous, information about U.S. voting irregularities, including suppression efforts etc., are spreading around the world. It's giving "American exceptionalism" a whole new meaning.

I still say it's ludicrous to tie federal and state elections all together on one day, and to have what appears to be the states in charge of regulations concerning federal elections, including deciding congressional district boundaries. This election is making that clearer and clearer.
-
Linda (lewing) - I read in the NYT about the awful situation in the public housing tenaments. Everyone is so scared to be without water and electricity in high crime areas. But there are also stories of heroism and sacrifice, as the strong help the weak. Public housing was my biggest fear - it's also the place where disease due to disrupted sanitation is greatest.
HL - I think the conservative conventional wisdom that you can win by suppressing the vote and lying about your opponent has finally reached its natural death. You could do that for a round or two, but not forever, and it's Mitt's turn to pay the price that Bush-Rove should have paid in 2000. The wheels of poetic justice grind slowly but they grind hard.
-
Sadly, Athena, I don't think voter suppression and intimidation is dead yet. I think it is alive and kicking in this election, and will undoubtedly change the results in a significant number of precincts. I don't think it will change the results of the election overall, but I do think it will skew results in certain states and almost assuredly in some cities. I am afraid it may discourage some voters from voting the future (and the rethugs who are perpetrating this would like nothing better). I am also not optimistic about the chances that the FBI, DOJ's Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorneys offices will investigate these crimes as thoroughly and promptly as is necessary. There are some people who really, really need to be in jail.
